Working on design projects that tackle social issues, for example sedentary lifestyles, has always interested me. I think it is more important to address social problems than to design a new shiny coffee machine. How people respond to their environments and how design can improve the quality of their lives intrigues me, as it gives me an insight into different people’s perspectives and the challenges they face. I believe technology will have an ever greater influence on how we live our lives. However, we need to ensure that technology is there to improve the users’ experience if necessary, not to replace it.
I am a committed and enthusiastic team player, whether it’s working with clients or chasing down a frisbee. I know how to work well in a team and communicate effectively, I am always looking for new challenges and opportunities to develop my understanding of the world around me.

FLOWBOARD
Sedentary behaviour, especially within offices, is linked to a variety of health problems.
What did I learn?
How to manage a project on a longer time scale, and the importance of engaging users in testing.
FLOWBOARD
What is the issue?
Sedentary behaviour is now more prevalent than ever, especially in offices. This is linked to a variety of health problems, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancers and poor mental health. Prolonged periods of inactivity can slow down the metabolism and affect the way the body controls sugar levels.
“Sedentary living has become the norm, we’ve created environments where we are expected to sit and stare.”

FLOWBOARD
What are the benefits?
Flowboard makes use of NEAT activity (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) –small movements such as swinging the legs or tapping the feet. This constant movement boosts the metabolism and increases insulin production and blood circulation. This activity also stimulates the brain, producing dopamine and endorphines. These are both happy drugs, which as a result increases wellbeing at work.
Engages your core muscles, which helps you to have better posture
Helps to stretch your lower legs, reducing the risk of cramp
The movement generated increases blood flow, reducing the risk of blood clots
These small, subconscious movements help to increase your metabolsim and insulin production
FLOWBOARD
It’s easy to set up too
Slide the first side of the bungee cord through the back slot.
Loop the cord round the outside of the two end table legs.
Then secure the end of the bungee cord in the front slot. Repeat previous steps
Slot the webbing into the side slots, suspending the board from the ground.
Slide the sides of webbing up and down to adjust the height
FLOWBOARD
You can connect with existing IoT eccosystems
Press the buttons on the cells to activate
If you currently use a wearable, sync your app with the cells from your board
Place the cells back into the board
Throughout the day the cells track your amount of movement
The cells total up the amount of movement in the office
Together the office works towards different goals
FLOWBOARD
What movements can I do?
Flowboard is set up to allow users to complete a variety of movements to suit their needs. The most simple movement is rolling the boards back forwards whilst its rested on the floor. This eases users into using the product. The other movememnts are variations of swinging movements, either moving your feet at the same time, or alternatively.
Flow forwards
With your feet placed on the board, gently swing them both forwards and backwards
One step at a time
Swing your feet forwards and backwards alternately, as if you were walking
With your feet placed towards the ends of the board, swing your feet in the shape of an infinity 8
Rock all day
Rolling the board back and forwards lightly stretch your legs and help blood

PENDUL
A switch between your work and home
With the increase in employers in the UK offering at least one form of flexible working, there is now a distinct increase in the number of people working from home. Pendul represents the mental shift between working from home and enjoying leisure time.

PENDUL
What are the benefits?
Pendul has three settings. When resting in the neutral position the light is inactive. Pushing down on the side with the closed lattice work turns on the light used for work. The work light has an open lattice, producing more light to allow the user to complete their tasks, without having to strain their eyes when reading printed documents or working at a computer. Pushing down on the side with the open lattice work turns on the light used for leisure. This produces a much softer, calming light.

PENDUL
How is it made?
Inside the light there are two circuits, both of which are activated by a tilt switch. The side that is used for work has two LEDs on its circuit. Combined with an open lattice work cover, it releases more light. In comparison, the leisure side of the light has a closed lattice work pattern with only one LED, so the light released is more ambient. There is a thin fabric cover on the inside of the light which defuses the harshness of light.

CHEMOTHERAPY
Work together to provide an alternative method to deliver chemotherapy to patients in North Yorkshire.
What did I learn?
The importance of professionalism when working with a client and speaking and listening to your target market.
CHEMOTHERAPY
What is the issue?
Providing healthcare in remote areas in the UK can require alternative methods of delivery. We worked together with NHS Yorkshire to provide a different way for chemotherapy patients to receive their treatment. The two hospitals that can deliver treatment are in York and Scarborough, a one hour drive through the Yorksire countryside. This poses some challenges for patients, making traveling to and receiving treatment an even more traumatic event.
Limited parking spaces Dispersed population Unreliable weather conditions Long journey times Travel sickness

CHEMOTHERAPY
The solution: Car share
Patient made aware of the service at their first appointment
Starts to contact others in their local area through the SMS service
The patient then follows the car share route they have established with other patients
Helps to reduce the external stress of getting to the hospital
CHEMOTHERAPY
The solution: Remote treatment
After receiving their schedule for the day, the nurses follow the directions to the patients house
When the team is close to the patients house, the app notifies the patient
The team follows a safety checklist throughout the treatment process. This is fed back to the central hub
If the team are behind schedule a new car can be dispatched from the hub
CHEMOTHERAPY
The solution is continious low level movement
The second side of the app is for the nurses who travel and deliver the treatment. North Yorkshire is split up into five areas in which a fleet of cars work, traveling to patient’s homes to deliver treatment. The app includes their schedule, directions and checklists for each stage of the process. There is also a facility to update the HUB on
HEALTHY HABITS
Empower people who live with long term lifestyle-related health conditions to take a greater role in managing their own care. What did I learn?
I learnt much more about my design process and how to transfer my research into an idea.
HEALTHY HABITS
What is the issue?
People with long-term lifestyle-related health conditions feel more empowered when they play a greater role in managing their care.

Healthy Habits helps recently-diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients to manage their condition. Healthy habits is comprised of a diary and card set for those who have type 2 diabetes. Writing about their feelings can help people with these conditions overcome emotional upsets and feel
HEALTHY HABITS
What are the benefits?
The first section allows users to monitor the five factors that influence type 2 diabetes: activity, diet, sleep, stress and blood glucose levels. Users can then work out what areas require more attention, and create goals and targets accordingly.
The next stage then allows them to create their goals to develop new habits that will enable them to manage their diabetes and feel more empowered. The diary is broken down into days and weeks, so users can take small steps to begin with
Monitor your lifestyle to workout what area your diabetes effects the most
Create goals and develop lifestyle habits to help work on that specific area
Pass on knowledge to empower yourself and others
HEALTHY HABITS
What is included?
Over two weeks you monitor your lifestyle in five areas: sleep, stress, diet, activity and blood glucose levels
Diary part 1
Here you set goals and start to create habits to reach them. With blank months you can start your journey at any point
