Giving Review 2020
Witnessing life-changing moments, one gift at a time
Since 1994
It is hard to believe that a full year has passed since COVID-19 emerged. The pandemic has challenged us all in ways we never imagined. With our 2020 Vision, The Laurel Lake Foundation saw its mission more clearly than ever. The Foundation was challenged to make sure our Projects and Programs fit the immediate needs of our community. As you leaf through these pages, you will see how your gifts helped to bring families together and create a support system as we were introduced to new concepts like social distancing and face masks. As you may know, several iPads were funded through a grant from the Foundation last year specifically to provide enrichment for those in skilled nursing. When residents were unable to leave campus due to COVID-19 restrictions, those iPads were repurposed into a means to communicate and visit with family members near and far. Many other Foundation projects, like the paved walking paths throughout campus, became vitally important to those staying close to home.
Tony Fitzgerald Chair, Foundation Board of Directors
Even with these programs in place, the Foundation Board of Directors was still concerned. We knew that residents were isolated from family and friends and we wanted to do more. We reached out personally to check in on residents. During dozens of phone calls, residents shared with us how they were managing day to day through the pandemic. As the year progressed, we were privileged to witness how Foundation Projects and Programs dedicated to wellness, lifestyle enhancement, campus beautification and spiritual growth were making an impact every day. All gifts, from the largest to the smallest, help to make a difference. It is this positive energy and acts of generosity that propel us forward through the COVID-19 pandemic.
David Oster Chief Executive Officer, Laurel Lake
As we emerge and look forward to life after COVID-19, The Laurel Lake Foundation is more determined than ever to help provide the best life possible for every resident. It is our steadfast dedication to the Laurel Lake residents, their families and the staff that will drive us forward. We are so grateful for you, who make this community a tremendous place to live and work, and we thank you for your support.

Stories of Sharing FOUNDATION GRANT CHANGES LIVES When The Laurel Lake Foundation awarded a grant for purchasing iPads for the Activities Department, no one had any idea the extraordinary impact those handheld computers would have on the community. The original plan for iPads was to further engage residents in Crown Center Skilled Nursing through brain games, art and even YouTube videos. And that is still very much the plan. However, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the iPads quickly became lifelines. They connected residents with family and friends who could not visit. With six iPads working overtime, staff members spent this past year FaceTiming, Skyping and Zooming with friendly faces across the country, and even sometimes outside the country. The iPads also helped to connect Independent Living residents with a spouse living in our Crown Center Skilled Nursing. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, they could not visit each other in person. “Family is important whether one remembers seeing them or not,” says Volunteer Coordinator Kathy Marged. “The smiles that come on the residents’ faces are priceless. In the moment, even those with dementia are smiling, engaged and happy.” When resident Jack Prentice’s nephew passed away suddenly, the iPads took on yet another vital role. Because of the pandemic, his nephew’s friends created a virtual Memorial Service. Not only was Programming/Fitness/Activities Manager Susan Busko able to show the service live on the iPad for Jack, she also helped Jack’s friends at Laurel Lake view the service. Jack was happy to be able to see the service. His nephew Brett Borger, from the Columbus area, also came to Laurel Lake to watch with him. “I was glad that I was able to visit Jack for David’s service,” Brett said. “We had one iPad hooked up to the TV and a second iPad that Jack held to watch. We enjoyed watching the service virtually and hearing so many people say such nice things about David. Jack said several times that he didn’t realize that David had so many connections and so many people that loved him. I think there were about 200 people on the Zoom call.” Jack’s Laurel Lake friend Pat Ludwig also was able to watch the service “It was beautiful,” Pat said. “It was such a tribute from so many friends.” Pat, who regularly Zooms with her daughters each week said that technology is amazing.
I know it is difficult on the residents to be isolated from their families. Since we can’t be there, it is nice to be able connect through a video call once in a while. Jack is always glad to see the family. It makes him smile. – Brett Borger, Jack Prentice’s nephew
Giving Societies ACKNOWLEDGING CONTINUED SUPPORT The Laurel Lake Foundation’s 26th Annual Recognition Dinner, honoring the members of its distinguished donor Programs and inducting the newest members of the Living Legacy Society and Laurel Benefactors, was temporarily postponed. Social and Emotional Support LIGHTING THE WAY WORKSHOPS Chaplain Jon Dodson wanted to make sure Laurel Lake residents received all of the social and emotional support they needed, especially after the COVID-19 precautions were enacted on campus. Through a grant from the Foundation, he was able to expand his “Lighting the Way” seminar and workshop Program to include not just grief support, but also support for mental well-being. “I listened to what the residents needed and wanted,” Chaplain Jon said. “National data shows the troublesome direct effects of isolation on the elderly and we’ve seen signs of that here. I’m hopeful that these upcoming sessions can offer our residents a healthy path forward.” The first new session, “Finding a Way Through This Time of Pandemic and Eldering: An Exploration of Change, Grit, Grief, and Resilience,” featured Author
and Certified Poetic Therapist John Fox. Due to the pandemic, he led a discussion on Zoom, speaking of the change and grief we are experiencing, and how grit and resilience are possible. Using poetry, participants in the follow-up sessions expressed their own feelings and grit, finding a way through this difficult time.
“
The original Lighting the Way Workshop series was piloted in 2017 through a grant from The Laurel Lake Foundation. That grief support seminar series, presented by Laurel Lake Hospice, reached out to the more than 100 residents who have experienced grief due to the loss of a spouse or child over the past four years.
I’m hopeful that these upcoming sessions can offer our residents a healthy path forward. – Chaplain Jon Dodson

The Sutcliffe Tranquility Courtyard, located just outside the doors of Crown Center, was made possible through a lasting estate gift to The Laurel Lake Foundation? Former residents Allen and Doris Sutcliffe moved to Laurel Lake in 1992 and enjoyed everything offered on campus. They were excited to leave a gift knowing that it would enrich the lives of future generations at Laurel Lake as much as their lives were enriched by others. Today the beautiful Sutcliffe Tranquility Courtyard provides the opportunity for residents receiving care in Crown Center, those most often unable to venture outside on campus, to experience the simple joys of nature in a safe and calming outdoor sanctuary.

Ramp Lounge Revitalization THE HEART OF CROWN CENTER
The Ramp Lounge Revitalization was the focus of the Foundation’s 2018 Tribute Tree Campaign. Today, it is exciting to see residents using this revitalized space, the heart of Crown Center. The new and improved space includes easy-toclean, well-padded chairs for durability and greater comfort. Wheelchair-friendly tables take on multiple uses. Other improvements include aestheticallypleasing healthcare-rated glass windows, hard wearing, shock absorbing flooring, plus stain and scrub resistant paint. The Ramp Lounge is so much more than just brick and mortar. When experiencing a transition to Crown Center, it’s comforting for residents to know that many familiar programs offered in Independent Living are modified to meet skilled-care needs and are offered in the Ramp Lounge. The room

itself elicits feelings of a safe harbor for those with dementia. While some residents may not recognize the activity that they are participating in, those with cognitive impairments know they are in a safe, familiar place with people who care about them. While small group activities have taken place in the Ramp Lounge during Covid-19, the Activities Team is eagerly looking forward to the day when the space once again hosts more than 50 different activities a week.
It’s so important to get out of your room and think about something other than your condition. Ramp Lounge programs bring you into another world and allow your thoughts to move outside of yourself.

GIFTS FROM THE HEART CAMPAIGN
CELEBRATING BENEVOLENCE
Sponsored by
Each spring, the Foundation’s annual Gifts from the Heart campaign supports renewal by helping to bring life-enriching projects, programs and services to Laurel Lake. COVID-19 presented a unique challenge and the Foundation moved to an all virtual platform for the Kick-off Celebration with a fun Front Porch party theme. Residents sat in their doorways for a socially-distanced celebration with their neighbors. Bright green hearts, honoring loved ones and special occasions, quickly filled the display hanging across from the Front Desk. With its 2020 Vision in mind, the Foundation also spent 20 days looking at 20 Projects and Programs that are impacting life at Laurel Lake every day. With a fun twist, the Foundation’s heart mascot highlighted each of those areas.
TRIBUTE TREE CAMPAIGN
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
During the holidays, The Laurel Lake Foundation expresses gratitude for life, loved ones and a better and brighter tomorrow through the Tribute Tree Program. Prompted by COVID-19, the Foundation set up three trees – one in the Laurel Lake Commons, one in Greenwood Assisted Living and one in Crown Center Skilled Nursing. This made it easy for residents to see the snowflake tributes that were made for their own loved ones, friends and special occasions. In 2020, more than 200 snowflake tribute ornaments were added to the beautiful trees. Tribute Tree ornaments were made possible by the more than 200 gifts to the Foundation. Since the Foundation was established in 1994, more than $15 million in gifts have been donated. Of that figure, more than $1 million have come from 19 years of Tribute Tree campaigns.

BUILDING A FUTURE
Lisa Mitchell, Director of Human Resources and Assisted Living has worked at Laurel Lake since June 2005. She has long been associated with the Staff Education Program and was extremely excited to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Walsh University. “The Staff Education Program was instrumental in helping me to accomplish my goals. I never thought I would go to college. In fact, I am the only one in my family who did and I am very proud that I was able to accomplish this.” Sponsored by The Laurel Lake Foundation, the Staff Education Program provides financial assistance to employees for college classes and books. It was definitely not easy. Lisa worked all day and then drove directly to class either in Medina, Akron or Canton, returning home after 10 p.m. Lisa worked as the Director of Human

recommend the Staff Education Program to anyone looking to advance their education,” she says. “It has opened doors for me that I never dreamed of. I am very excited to see what the future holds.”
MAKING SMART DECISIONS
Sponsored by The Laurel Lake Foundation, Money Matters workshops have been helping residents better understand and address timely financial topics and concerns that could impact their financial well-being since 2017. These “How to” programs have covered everything from Smartphone Security and Travel Safety tips to Managing Intergenerational Wealth and Identity Theft. Blake Rawson, CFP, CIMA, Vice Chair of The Laurel Lake Foundation Board of Directors, leads the discussions. He was happy to be able to continue the series despite the pandemic. Working to adapt to a virtual format, Blake recorded several sessions that were loaded onto the CATIE iPads. These new sessions became Money Matters Moments, shorter episodes packed full of relevant information. “These valuable workshops are an educational process that keeps people up-to-date on the current rules, rights and timing of changes in the financial world,” he says.

The Laurel Lake Foundation is looking forward to the day when residents, staff and family members can once again enjoy a Second Wind Dream or gain a better understanding of dementia through the Virtual Dementia Tour Program. There are dozens of Projects and Programs, funded by the Foundation, that we encourage you to explore, experience and enjoy once the restrictions have been lifted. Thank you all for your support over the years, especially during 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
KATHY AND GAIL PAVICK GIVING BACK Kathy and Gail Pavick’s story is quite different from most people. Natives of Warren, Ohio, Gail is the youngest of Kathy and Bob Pavick’s three girls. At age 21, she was set to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and her next step was graduate school at Michigan State to study sports medicine. Those plans changed in an instant when her car was hit head-on by a tractor trailer truck as she drove home from her internship her senior year of college. With amazing support from her family, especially her mom, plus years of surgeries, therapy and rehab, Gail not only survived the accident, but has thrived. After Bob passed away in 2015, Kathy began to worry in earnest about the next step in life. When the Pavicks found out that Laurel Lake does allow adult children with special needs to live
in the community with their parents, it was life-changing. And that is the main reason they chose to support The Laurel Lake Foundation. “The idea that Laurel Lake accepted Gail and that the two of us could be together, I will always be grateful,” Kathy says. “It was a big relief and I’m truly thankful.” She and Gail are steady supporters of Foundation Projects and programs. Kathy is especially impressed by the Staff Education program and the Employee Emergency Fund. “The Foundation offers a lot to the employees and that is super,” Kathy says. “The more the employees learn by advancing their education, the better it is for us, the residents.”
A Helping Hand Did you know that gifts to The Laurel Lake Foundation are used to make a difference in the lives of Laurel Lake employees as well as residents? The Employee Emergency Program was established in 2008 by The Laurel Lake Foundation to assist employees in times of significant personal crisis. If an employee is facing a temporary and unanticipated urgent financial hardship like an acute illness or house fire, the Employee Emergency Program can provide monetary support to help ease the financial strain. The program is especially relevant during this global pandemic when life is even more unpredictable. Due to the generosity of donors, employees can have peace of mind that help is available when burdened with such difficulties.
