Giving Review 2021

Unwavering support in the best and worst of times Since 1994

In the aftermath of 2020’s shocking headlines reinforcing that the world was in the midst of a pandemic, 2021 brought about the reality of learning how to live with COVID-19. We began to understand the meaning of Long COVID, The Great Resignation and Supply Chain Disruption. We experienced the effects of staffing shortages, challenges in sustaining programming and keeping our actual (or virtual) doors open for residents and families. Through all of this The Laurel Lake Foundation remained steadfast in its mission and did what it was established to do … provide funding for the ongoing and enriching needs of the campus as well as urgent and unexpected needs, while preparing for the watershed moments of the future.

Tony Fitzgerald Chair, Foundation Board of Directors

Although projects and programs were limited in 2021, The Laurel Lake Foundation was called upon to help. We answered with funding for two new projects, while continuing to fund the ongoing programs that were able to be carried out amidst difficult COVID-19 restrictions. Dedicated to Dementia, a train-the-trainer pilot program enabled two staff members to receive certification from the National Council of Dementia Practitioners. And the EasyStand StrapStand helped our therapists give therapeutic support to those who cannot stand on their own.

David Oster CEO, Laurel Lake

As we begin to consider what a post-pandemic world will look like for nonprofit CCRCs, the concept of turning toward new measures of success is formidable, yet offers great opportunity to leverage change to our advantage. We will follow the lead of those forward-thinking donors who pledged their support for the past two decades. It is this positive energy and continued generosity that will propel us beyond the COVID-19 pandemic and into the future. Thank you for your commitment to perpetuate the good works of The Laurel Lake Foundation.

Alisa Getzinger Director, The Laurel Lake Foundation

Training Programs ON-THE-JOB SKILLS

The STNA recruitment and training program is key to providing top notch, dedicated staff members for Crown Center Skilled Nursing. While the program launched in 2020 when a Staff Educator joined Laurel Lake and a new classroom was created, Covid-19 quickly put the brakes on the program. We are happy to report that the STNA Training Program is up and running with new recruits currently enrolled. The class is three weeks long and includes two weeks of classroom education followed by one week of practical experience working on the floor with residents. Once the training is complete, those in the training program will take the State of Ohio written and skill test before becoming full members of the Laurel Lake team. Part of the STNA Training grant through the

Foundation also funds a Medication Aide program and Basic Life Support training. The goal of the Medication Aide program is to educate STNAs and help them meet the requirements needed to dispense medications. This is important as it will allow nurses, who now have to dispense medications, to focus on other areas of patient care. The Basic Life Support training will offer CPR and First Aide training to all staff members at Laurel Lake.

Get to know the Board

Dr. Jennifer Stanley recently joined the Board. An Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Akron, she also serves as the Director of the Institute for Life-Span Development & Gerontology at the university. Dr. Stanley is looking forward to working with the team “toward a noble goal of improving the well-being of residents at Laurel Lake.”

PAT LUDWIG THANKFUL FOR THE LAUREL LAKE FOUNDATION

Laurel Lake Resident Pat Ludwig with her daughters Karen Yourd and Kimberly Parker.

Pat Ludwig had a built-in network of friends when she moved to Laurel Lake almost 22 years ago from South Euclid. Quite a few members of her church, Forest Hills Presbyterian Church in Cleveland Heights, had already moved to campus. Pat says moving to Laurel Lake was the best thing she could have done. “It was a gift to my daughters so they didn’t need to worry about me,” she says. “I love the friendships I have made over the years.”

“As an Executive Director of a Hospital Foundation in California, I know how important legacy giving can be to support the current and future needs of Laurel Lake,” Kimberly says. “Over the years it’s been wonderful to see the changes and improvements at Laurel Lake that have been touched by the generosity of residents, their families and the community.”

Her daughters Karen Yourd and Kimberly Parker, both out of state, rest easier knowing that Pat is in a safe community with so many opportunities for socializing and extra care right on campus.

“I like to honor my mom at Christmas and to show my appreciation for the compassionate and caring employees of Laurel Lake,” she says. “I have been at mom’s and experienced many interactions with employees including maintenance people, housekeepers, dining services, health services, front desk and activities coordinators as well as health care workers. They all have a heart for the residents.”

Karen has regularly supported the Tribute Tree campaign.

Pat has always tried to stay active over the years. She plays Chair Volleyball, worked in the Colony Shop and served as the president of Resident Council. She was a part of several committees like Marketing, Dining and Wellness, Pat acknowledges that the Foundation has and still sings in the Laurel Lake Chorale. done so much for Laurel Lake. “They have contributed to so many things, more than I can Also, she and her daughters have been steady name,” she says. “It is a very important part of supporters of The Laurel Lake Foundation. the community here and Laurel Lake wouldn’t be Her daughters are happy that the Foundation the same without it.” enriches life at Laurel Lake.

Fireside Chats STAYING CONNECTED

The Laurel Lake Foundation began offering a new program for residents on their in-house iPads, known on campus as Catie. Fashioned after the historic Fireside Chats from Franklin Delano Roosevelt that gave an update on what was happening in the world, this video series – also called Fireside Chats – features Foundation Board of Directors Chair Tony Fitzgerald. Each episode takes a look at Foundation projects and programs, addresses Frequently Asked Questions, and often shares a picture of Tony’s newest grandson. “The Laurel Lake Foundation is most thankful for our generous donors,” Tony says. “It is an honor to talk about the projects and programs that have been accomplished, and are being planned for the future, because of the generosity of our donors.”

SECOND WIND DREAMS DARE TO DREAM BIG After more than a year of Covid-19 restrictions, the Second Wind Dreams Program, providing resident enrichment for 17 years, is active again and fulfilling the dreams of residents in Crown Center Skilled Care and Greenwood Assisted Living. Greenwood resident Carolyn Kelly was thrilled to venture off campus and enjoy the Asian Lantern Festival at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo this summer along with five other Crown Center and Greenwood residents. “I absolutely loved it,” Carolyn said. “It was really terrific to get out and see something like that! The Laurel Lake staff members who made it possible were amazing during the entire evening and I never would have been able to go otherwise.”

Seasons of Giving GIFTS FROM THE HEART CAMPAIGN

CELEBRATING BENEVOLENCE

The Laurel Lake Foundation was extra excited to kick off its 2021 Gifts from the Heart campaign in person after more than a year of virtual events. The Kick Off Celebration also had the honor of being the first major event to take place in the newly refurbished Community Room. The traditional heart display blossomed in the Laurel Lake Commons and a new display was created for Greenwood Assisted Living where names and occasions were added frequently. Also new this year, each resident in Crown Center Skilled Nursing was recognized with a special heart outside their door, like the one pictured at right. Since the program began, the Foundation has received close to 2,000 Gifts from the Heart which truly make an impact on life at Laurel Lake.

TRIBUTE TREE

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

The Laurel Lake Foundation celebrated its 20th Annual Tribute Tree Celebration in December. The Foundation Board of Directors kicked off the celebration by explaining how the Foundation, with the support of its donors, is dedicated to helping residents as they transition through the aging process. Festive trees sprouted up in the Laurel Lake Commons and Greenwood Assisted Living. This year, snowflake decorations and a special wish were hung up outside each Crown Center residence. Tribute Tree ornaments were made possible by the more than 200 gifts to the Foundation in 2021. Since the Foundation was established in 1994, more than $15 million in gifts have been donated. Of that figure, more than $1 million have come from 20 years of Tribute Tree campaigns.

Helping Hands GRANT FUNDS THERAPY EQUIPMENT

The EasyStand StrapStand offers huge benefits for the Laurel Lake Therapy Team. Purchased through a grant from the Foundation, the standing frame is a positioning device designed to support those who cannot stand on their own. Therapy Department Manager Stephanie Howard pointed out that the patient receives numerous benefits by standing without the assistance of a caregiver. Benefits include moving from a sitting position to a standing position and working to increase standing stamina.

lower extremities and core muscles. These muscles are not typically used while sitting or lying down. Once the patient has worked up to longer periods of standing, they can then transition to the parallel bars for the next step of rehabilitation.

Other significant benefits include improving self-confidence, self-esteem, self-image and the overall quality of life.

This standing frame not only helps a patient to stand up, but it also reduces the risk of injury to the assisting therapists.

While a resident is working to increase their stamina, therapists can work to strengthen the

Stephanie says they have seen great outcomes by using the EasyStand StrapStand.

STAFF EDUCATION BUILDING A FUTURE

Staff members enrolled in the Staff Education program accept their certificates With the generous help of donors, the Foundation’s Staff Education Program has been providing assistance for tuition and books to qualifying employees since 2007. Some employees, like our Director of HR & Assisted Living Lisa Mitchell, pictured at right, participate in the program throughout their entire college education. The field of

study or training is unlimited and participants have majored in everything from nursing and business to fashion and education. As these participants work toward reaching their full career training and academic potential, our residents benefit from their achievements in the way of better quality of care.

LIGHTING THE WAY WORKSHOPS

I’m hopeful that these upcoming sessions can offer our residents a healthy path forward. – Chaplain Jon Dodson

The Lighting the Way Seminar and Workshop Series offers a little extra support to Laurel Lake residents. After seeing the emotional toll the pandemic brought, Chaplain Jon Dodson wanted to make sure that everyone receives the social and emotional support they need. In 2017, a Foundation grant launched the workshops which initially focused on providing support for residents and family expanded after Covid-19 hit. It now includes new sessions members affected by terminal addressing mental health support and the emotional wellillness or the death of a loved being of residents. one. The scope of the series was

DEDICATED TO DEMENTIA A NEW SUPPORT SYSTEM The new Foundation-funded pilot program, Dedicated to Dementia, begins with training by the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners and recently, two Laurel Lake staff members, Michelle Beier, of Social Services, and Staff Educator Karen Viland, earned their Certified Alzheimer Disease Dementia Care Trainer Certification. They can now take what they’ve learned and share that with the rest of the staff. This new interdisciplinary approach to dementia takes into account the whole person

– their background, culture, education and likes or dislikes. By focusing on each person in this manner, it creates a greater understanding of the world our residents with dementia live in and helps to preserve their dignity while providing care and services.

Over the past decade, The Laurel Lake Foundation has granted an annual average of $460,000 in support of campus projects and programs.

Did you know?

In addition to providing resident support, The Laurel Lake Foundation also helps staff members in times of crisis. The Employee Emergency Program was established in 2008 by The Laurel Lake Foundation to assist employees in times of significant personal hardship. If an employee is facing a temporary and unanticipated urgent financial catastrophe like an acute illness or house fire, the Employee Emergency Program can provide monetary support to help ease the financial strain. The program has been especially relevant during the Covid-19 pandemic. Due to the generosity of donors, employees can have peace of mind that help is available when life throws its unanticipated curve balls.

The following special campus programs, services and amenities were all made possible through The Laurel Lake Foundation and its generous, caring donors.
