Giving Review 2018
Celebrating 1994-2019
Years
Strengthening our community, one gift at a time The Laurel Lake Foundation kept a steady eye on its mission in 2018. We are humbled by the generosity of you, our donors, who have helped us to accomplish great things. Because of you, we helped to provide peace and comfort to residents and their families who faced the emotional challenge of making difficult end-of-life decisions through Laurel Lake Hospice.
Sister Maryann Golonka, HM Chair, Foundation Board of Directors
Because of you, the mysterious world of dementia became a little clearer for caregivers striving to help residents living with cognitive impairment to navigate that often confusing road through the Virtual Dementia Training program. Because of you, staff members challenged themselves academically and deepened their professional knowledge, making their world and ultimately that of our residents a little brighter through the Staff Education Program. Because of you, living in a skilled nursing facility need not mean the end of hopes or dreams. Just ask those residents who added new adventures to their lives last year through the Second Wind Dreams program. With a plethora of projects and programs constantly underway, some developed over a decade ago, we recognized the importance of being guided by our past. The Laurel Lake Foundation’s legacy of enriching Laurel Lake was forged by the many individuals who came before us. With over two decades of philanthropic support from forward-caring residents and families, staff members and board directors, today The Laurel Lake Foundation continues to play an important role in making Laurel Lake Northeast Ohio’s premier active retirement community. We are dutifully using that past support as a springboard for inspiration in our future plans. Moving forward, we will continue to help ensure that our residents, their families and staff can live their best lives. We enthusiastically look ahead to our 25th anniversary in 2019 and are excited to explore the possibilities of what can be done as we all continue to work together. Thank you for your energy, vision and commitment in perpetuating the good works of The Laurel Lake Foundation.

TOWN CENTER
Grand Opening!
On March 14, Laurel Lake residents, staff, donors, volunteers and Hudson city leaders gathered to formally dedicate the gorgeous new $7.3 million Town Center. The impressive new amenities, 30,000 square feet of renovations and new construction, are the truest expression of Laurel Lake’s commitment to resident and employee wellness.
Funded in part by $1.3 million in gifts to The Laurel Lake Foundation’s Town Center Renovation Capital Campaign, the project includes the new Fitness & Aquatic Center, Salon, Bistro and Colony Shop, the Dr. William G. and Rosemary R. Ansley Therapy Center, the Virginia Talley Williams Artisans Studio, the Mike and Mae Collins Art Gallery, and other public spaces. “We are grateful to our generous donors for this project, a true blessing for our community,” said Laurel Lake CEO David Oster. “These new facilities are helping the people we serve, of all ages and physical abilities, to lead better lives.”
24TH ANNUAL
Recognition Dinner
Honored were (from left) Louise Sandercock, Judy Watkins, Ed Mailey, Margaret Ewart, and Blake Rawson. Cathy Bellman and Sally Musser, the daughter and niece of Dr. James Hewlett, were pleased to be on hand as he was honored posthumously.
INSPIRED BY THOSE WHO SHARE OUR VISION The Laurel Lake Foundation’s 24th Annual Recognition Dinner took place on September 12, honoring the members of its distinguished donor programs and inducting the newest members of the Living Legacy Society and Laurel Benefactors. The Laurel Benefactors welcomed six new members: David* and Margaret Ewart, Ed Mailey, Louise Sandercock, and Nick Koelkebeck and Katherine Wolfe*. Joining the Living Legacy Society were Judy Watkins, Dr. James Hewlett* and Dr. William and Rosemary* Ansley. Members of these societies help lead and inspire others through their consistent, dedicated support of projects and programs funded by The Laurel Lake Foundation. Blake Rawson, a Foundation board member since 2016, was presented with the Joseph M. Lawler Leadership Award. The award acknowledges those who go above and beyond in demonstrating leadership and service to support the goals and mission of the Foundation. Whether he is leading a “Money Matters” workshop, assisting with Foundation Board matters or advising the Laurel Lake Investment Committee, Blake puts his all into everything he does. “I get up every morning with the goal of making a positive difference in someone’s life,” Blake says. “That’s what I love about Money Matters and working with the Foundation. I feel I’ve made a big difference.” * Posthumously

Stories of Sharing LOUISE SANDERCOCK PAYS IT FORWARD Louise Sandercock is grateful for the life she has led, and is now on a mission to pay her good fortune forward. Thanks to Tom, her son and “financial guy,” Louise’s bank now automatically sends a check to the nonprofit organizations she strongly believes in, like The Laurel Lake Foundation. This makes it easy for Louise to be supportive while staying organized. As a dedicated ambassador for the Foundation, many of Louise’s activities revolve around Foundation-funded projects. She joined the Laurel Lake Chorale and enjoys musical programs featuring the Kawai Concert Grand Piano and restored 1927 Steinway Grand Piano, both made possible through the Foundation. Louise looks forward to the Brown Bag Lecture series and has even tried her hand at creative writing over the years.
DR. JAMES HEWLETT LEAVES A LASTING LEGACY Bone marrow transplant pioneer Dr. James Hewlett has been a caregiver all of his life. He continued to think of others when he planned for part of his life’s bounty to be gifted as a bequest to The Laurel Lake Foundation. His daughters Cathy Bellman and Susie Moore realized, after he passed away, that their father financially supported the places that supported him and helped him face difficult times. Because of Dr. Hewlett’s forward thinking and careful planning, his bequest will help to support Laurel Lake long into the future and he can continue to take care of the people and programs that meant so much to him, just as he always did in life. Dr. Hewlett performed the first successful bone marrow transplant at the Cleveland Clinic in 1976.

Stories of Sharing PHYLLIS DILLMAN BELIEVES IN TEAMWORK Phyllis Dillman has an extremely practical outlook on life. About two years ago during a Resident Association meeting, Phyllis learned that it was possible to support The Laurel Lake Foundation by including a donation with her monthly service fees. Each month she includes a donation to the Foundation when she pays her bill. It is a simple way to give, she says, adding that the deducted contributions will add up to more money than she would otherwise be able to give for the Foundation’s semi-annual campaigns.
DR. VICTOR & ROBERTA DEMARCO PLAN FOR THE FUTURE Victor and Roberta DeMarco have a take-charge attitude toward life. Whether they are planning an adventure down the Amazon River or getting their finances in order, the DeMarcos definitely like to have a plan in place. Recently, while attending one of The Laurel Lake Foundation-sponsored Money Matters workshops, they learned that it was possible to use their RMDs to arrange a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) with The Laurel Lake Foundation. With a little planning and research, charitable gift annuities may open up a world of possibilities for the DeMarcos. Because of the benefits of a CGA, the DeMarcos can support the good works of The Laurel Lake Foundation at the same time that they set off on another adventure.

ENRICHING PROGRAMS The beauty of our donors is in how they reach beyond their own needs to make a difference in the lives of others. Their gifts provide vital services and programs for Laurel Lake neighbors and friends, just when they are needed most.
Hospice Care
Laurel Lake
Hosp ce made possible in part by The Laurel Lake Foundation
Grief Support
With support from a remarkable team of volunteers, 33 residents and their families have experienced firsthand the incredible strength and comforting peace that Laurel Lake Hospice delivers. Arriving on campus in 2017, the mission of the hospice program is to provide compassionate care and hope while respecting the choices of patients and their families during their end-of-life journey. This program, seeded and supported by The Laurel Lake Foundation, offers residents the reassurance of knowing that if they need it, quality hospice care can be administered right on campus by staff members who are familiar to them. Key to the program’s success is the growing team of trained hospice volunteers who offer the gifts of comfort and presence to patients and their families.
Life is finite; this we cannot change or control. What we can control is how we respond to grief and loss in our lives. Funded by The Laurel Lake Foundation and presented by Laurel Lake Hospice, six “Lighting the Way: Life after Loss” Grief Workshops were offered in 2018 to help residents, family members and friends better understand grief and find the practical insights, coping skills and community support they need during times of loss. For the full story, watch your mailbox or visit LaurelLakeFoundation.org.
LIFE ENRICHING PROGRAMS
Second Wind Dreams
With The Laurel Lake Foundation’s steady support, and meaningful collaboration between staff, family members and a volunteer committee, the desires of residents who otherwise are unable to carry out their own wishes due to cognitive or physical challenges, are fulfilled through the Second Wind Dreams program. A national program, Second Wind Dreams helped residents achieve many dreams in 2018, from attending performances at Blossom Music Center or Playhouse Square to enjoying a meal at a favorite restaurant. Those who were unable to leave campus were treated to spa-like pampering during several “Comfort Days.”
Learning How to Give
It’s never too early to start learning about the importance of philanthropy, and 8th graders at Seton Catholic School in Hudson have a special way to do that. Thanks to the Foundation’s Seniors and Youth: Partners in Philanthropy (SAYPIP) program, students work right alongside Laurel Lake residents in a real-life exercise to form a grant-making board. Working together, the board distributes funds to local charities while learning about the nonprofit grant-making process and honing their leadership and fund-management skills through teamwork, all while building relationships with their grant-making partners. Laurel Lake resident Mary Jo Keshock thoroughly enjoys working with the students and feels the opportunity through The Laurel Lake Foundation gives them real-world experience. “You could see as they became comfortable with us, they would ask more and more questions. That’s when the friendships developed,” she said. The Seniors and Youth Partners in Philanthropy program, established in 2007, is a collaborative effort between the Burton D. Morgan Foundation, Seton Catholic School and The Laurel Lake Foundation.
Money Matters
Introduced in Fall 2017 and sponsored by The Laurel Lake Foundation, a new series of “Money Matters” workshops is helping residents better understand and address timely financial topics and concerns that could impact their financial well-being. These “How To” programs have covered everything from Identity Theft and Smartphone Security to Tax Code Changes and Financial Planning. Blake Rawson, CFP®, CIMA®, leads these discussions in the Laurel Lake Community Room. Contact the Foundation at 330-655-1424 for information on upcoming workshops.

LIFE ENRICHING PROGRAMS
Walking in Their Shoes
Made possible through The Laurel Lake Foundation, the Virtual Dementia Tour training program provides a window into the world of dementia. Employees first take a survey asking them to rate their knowledge of dementia. Next, they don several pieces of equipment, including iPods, head phones and special glasses, that mimic the physical and cognitive challenges residents with dementia face every day. Once all the equipment is in place, the employees are asked to complete a series of everyday tasks within a time limit. When finished, they take an exit survey and find out how well they functioned with the added layer of challenges. Since the program arrived at Laurel Lake in 2017, 138 team members—nurses, dietary aides, housekeepers, maintenance personnel, therapists and Front Desk staff—have taken the training. And because of that training, they have a better understanding and are better able to care for those suffering from dementia throughout the Laurel Lake campus. In 2019, the program also will be offered to independent residents and family members who have a loved one dealing with dementia.

Building Careers
With help from The Laurel Lake Foundation’s Staff Education Program, employee Shelby Fisher is attending college debt-free. For the past five years, Shelby has received financial assistance from the Foundation for tuition and books. She is one of 11 Laurel Lake employees who participated in the program in 2018. Working 32 hours a week for Dining Services and in the Colony Shop, plus carrying a fulltime course load at the University of Akron, does not leave Shelby much free time. “The Staff Education Program has helped me immensely,” she says, as she reaches toward her goal of working as a registered dietitian at a hospital or nursing home after graduation. Today, Shelby serves as an ambassador for the Foundation’s Staff Education Program. “I’m always telling my co-workers about it. You simply need to apply and follow through with the requirements. Also you are invited to the Foundation’s annual dinner and I really enjoy talking with the residents.” For the full story, watch your mailbox or visit LaurelLakeFoundation.org.
Seasons of Giving GIFTS FROM THE HEART CAMPAIGN HELPS KEEP OUR CAMPUS BEAUTIFUL
Each Spring, the Foundation’s annual Gifts from the Heart campaign supports renewal by helping to bring life-enriching projects, programs and services to Laurel Lake. The focus for 2018 was to help bring a Cushman Truckster Utility Vehicle to campus to ease the workload for our Maintenance Department. The workhorse Truckster is doing just that and can be seen regularly all over campus in any type of weather. This small but mighty vehicle helps enhance the outdoor beauty and safety of Laurel Lake. Since the program began in 1998, the Foundation has received over 1,600 Gifts from the Heart. These gifts have helped to maintain our community’s first-rate reputation and legacy of excellence in retirement living and resident care.
TRIBUTE TREE CAMPAIGN FOCUSES ON REVITALIZATION During the holidays, the Foundation’s annual Tribute Tree giving campaign helps maintain Laurel Lake’s legacy of excellence in vital ways. In 2018, the campaign focused on renovating the Ramp Lounge in Crown Center. The Ramp Lounge is truly the most “lived in” room at Laurel Lake, hosting more life-enriching daily activities than any other place on campus. Close to 50 programs are held weekly in this cozy space. From exercise programs and cognitive fitness to art and music therapy, the Lounge is an essential part of life at Laurel Lake. Work on the revitalization project is scheduled to begin in 2019. Since its inception in 2001, the Tribute Tree has inspired close to 3,000 gifts and has raised over $1 million in funding to enrich the lives of residents, their families and staff. The Laurel Lake Foundation is deeply grateful for the generosity of all of our donors and volunteers.
