Giving Review 2019
Enhancing a vibrant community, one gift at a time The Laurel Lake Foundation’s 25th Anniversary year saw a mix of exciting projects, continued benevolence and new leadership. In April, Board member Tony Fitzgerald was appointed as the new Chair of The Laurel Lake Foundation Board of Directors. He took over leadership from long-time Chair Sr. Maryann Golonka. She will continue to lend her expertise as a member of the Board and Chair of the Grants Disbursement Committee.
Since 1994
With this new leadership in place, The Laurel Lake Foundation is proud to share some of the important accomplishments from 2019. We have been privileged to witness the success of projects and programs devoted to wellness services, lifestyle enhancement, campus beautification, spiritual growth and so much more. As you leaf through these pages, you will see how your gifts helped to spark new ideas and propel exciting programs forward. Read about how the Lighting the Way Hospice Grief Seminar series is bringing light into the lives of those who have lost a loved one. Meet a resident who dreamed about once again going to the ballet.
Tony Fitzgerald Chair, Foundation Board of Directors
Our campus is filled with the spirit of generosity. Those who have gone before us, left a lasting legacy through the Foundation for future residents, and those who are here now, are picking up right where the others left off. The vibrancy of our community reflects the deep commitment that our residents, their families and our staff have to live their best lives possible. The work of the Foundation is now more important than ever. While the COVID-19 pandemic did not occur in 2019, at the time of this writing the current situation is overwhelming for long-term care facilities. With news of COVID-19 updated daily, and sometimes hourly, the Foundation is more thankful than ever for the solid support of our generous donors. Working together, we are committed to making sure our residents are safe.
David Oster Chief Executive Officer, Laurel Lake
Please take a moment to consider how you can help the Foundation step up and make a difference at Laurel Lake today. It is our steadfast dedication to the Laurel Lake residents, their families and the staff that drives the Foundation forward. We are extremely optimistic about the future. There is more work to be done, and with your help and support, we will be ready.

Board Chair focuses on giving back The Laurel Lake Foundation Board Chair Tony Fitzgerald had first-hand knowledge of The Laurel Lake Foundation before he even joined the board. That was thanks to his parents. Joe and Katie Fitzgerald moved to Laurel Lake from Strongsville in 1999. They had researched residential living facilities all over Cleveland before they decided on the Hudson continuing care community. Joe, a retired eye doctor, was especially fond of Susan Busko, programming and activities manager. “Susan got him started using the treadmill. Dad always came down at 3:30 p.m. to the Fitness Center to avoid the lines in the morning,” Tony remembers. While Tony was aware of The Laurel Lake Foundation while his parents were residents – Joe and Katie made a legacy gift to the Foundation – it was actually Susan Busko who suggested Tony as a Board candidate years later. “Laurel Lake was very good to my parents,” Tony says. “This was a way for me to give back. I can’t explain how important that is. I saw firsthand the care Laurel Lake gave in all different areas.” Since joining the Board in 2017, Tony works hard to support the efforts of the Foundation. He uses a heart as an example to describe how the Foundation works. He explains that the operational side of Laurel Lake makes sure the dayto-day affairs are taken care of, while the medical side of Laurel Lake focuses on the health and well-
being of the residents. “The Foundation is the heart of the organization,” he says. “It focuses on giving back and taking care of all the other needs.” It is committed to providing a better quality of life and better well-being for the residents, Tony says, whether that is through exercise equipment, hospice, staff training, dementia care or equipment to keep campus running smoothly. He adds that the Foundation offers structure for the generosity of the donors. “When you go through a grant process, it insures the perpetuity of the gift beyond just the donation,” he says. “This means that Continued on Page 7
COVID-19 Pandemic Touches Our Lives While publishing this, we are in the midst of one of the greatest crises our country has ever seen. The Laurel Lake Foundation is concerned about our residents and their family members and friends. We trust the measures in place on our campus will help to keep all of us as safe as possible. As we navigate these unfamiliar roads together, we are more thankful than ever for the support of our generous donors. You are making a difference, especially now! A few years ago, the Activities Department received a grant through the Foundation to purchase iPads to use for enrichment activities in our Assisted Living and Skilled Care Center. Today, those iPads are serving as a lifeline for residents
separated from their family members. With your help, our residents can still keep in touch with beloved friends and family. Also, over the years, the Foundation has been instrumental in creating beautiful vistas and walking paths throughout our campus. Today those walking paths allow residents a little freedom in the beautiful outdoors at a time when the world is mostly on hold. Please know that the Foundation continues to focus on the health and well-being of our residents, staff and their families, even during these new times of uncertainty. By working together, we can emerge from this pandemic stronger than ever.

SCIFIT FITNESS EQUIPMENT
Staying Active!
The Laurel Lake Foundation is committed to taking care of the whole mind, body and spirit of each resident which made it an easy decision to support adding new fitness equipment to the Laurel Lake Fitness Center. Manufactured by Scifit, the new equipment includes two steppers, a recumbent bike and a lateral stability trainer. The lateral stability trainer helps to strengthen hips and knees, which in turn help to prevent falls. Each of the new additions is extremely user friendly and includes the same display panels, hydraulic adjustments for seat height, and a seat that spins all the way around making it easier to get on and off. Programming/Activity/Fitness Manager Susan Busko calls the lateral stability trainer “The Beast.” “It strengthens the hip flexor, the knee and the ligaments supporting the knee,” she says. “It keeps you upright and helps to prevent falls. It is the reason you can lift your leg over bathtubs, curbs and into SUVs.” Resident Paul Long, and frequent Fitness Center visitor, was also happy to see the new equipment. Using the new Scifit recumbent bike twice a day, Paul gets in 4,000 steps each time he visits the Fitness Center. “I try to get in 10,000 steps a day,” he says. And the new equipment helps to make this goal a reality. Continued from page 3

Second Wind Dreams THE BEAUTY OF A GOOD DREAM
The ballet has always held a special place in Greenwood resident Maxine Shiffman’s heart. It probably has a lot to do with her roots in New York City. Thanks to Second Wind Dreams, Maxine was able to enjoy a performance of “Coppelia” at Playhouse Square. With The Laurel Lake Foundation’s steady support, and meaningful collaboration between staff, family members and a volunteer committee, the desires of residents who otherwise are unable to carry out their own wishes due to cognitive or physical challenges, are fulfilled through the Second Wind Dreams program. A national program, Second Wind Dreams helped residents achieve many dreams in 2019. “Second Wind Dreams is a wonderful program,” Maxine says. “It allows you to do something you otherwise can’t do by yourself.” Maxine also has witnessed other dreams unfolding while living at Laurel Lake. One of her favorites involved a former resident who was not able to graduate from his beloved University of Notre Dame because of World War II. In celebration of his 90th birthday,
Money Matters
staff members wore their gowns and presented him with an honorary degree in a graduation ceremony just for him. “There wasn’t a dry eye in the room,” Maxine says. Individual personalities shine through when inspired residents find their second wind. The Foundation is committed to making sure these dreams continue to brighten the days of Laurel Lake residents. Even those who are unable to leave campus are treated to spa-like pampering during several “Comfort Days” planned each year.
Introduced in Fall 2017 and sponsored by The Laurel Lake Foundation, a series of Money Matters workshops is helping residents better understand and address timely financial topics and concerns that could impact their financial well-being. These “How to” programs have covered everything from Smartphone Security and Identity Theft to Managing Intergenerational Wealth. Blake Rawson, CFP, CIMA, leads the discussions and is happy that the Money Matter workshops allow him to achieve one of his goals. “I wake up every morning with one goal in mind and that is to have a positive impact on someone’s life,” he says. “Money Matters really allows me to do that.” He also thinks that the workshops are extremely valuable. “The workshops are an educational process that keeps people up-to-date on the current rules, rights and timing,” he says. “It seems like every time I turn around there is a tax law change or a state law change.” Resident Jeff Maruna has attended several of the workshops and finds the information he receives very valuable. “I liked some of the insight on computer safety and cell phone safety,” he says. “The seminar on Transferring Wealth helped to reconfirm what I already had in place.”

Stories of Sharing TOM AND JANET DANIEL PLANNING AHEAD Tom and Janet Daniel are just two examples of the generous spirits living at Laurel Lake today. Their story, which actually begins long before they moved to Laurel Lake, is filled with adventure, compassion and a love of life. Since moving to Laurel Lake, Tom and Janet have enjoyed attending Keys to a Sharp Mind Distance Learning programs over the years, and continue to be strong supporters of Laurel Lake and The Laurel Lake Foundation. Each January, the Daniels put together a gifting budget for the year. They include some of the causes that remain near and dear to them, including the Foundation. For Janet, the Staff Education Program is high on her list of priorities. Tom is also cognizant of what it takes to keep the Laurel Lake campus up and running. He knows as the community continues to age, maintenance will play a bigger and bigger role. Thanks to forward-thinking supporters of The Laurel Lake Foundation, like Tom and Janet, Laurel Lake Retirement Community will continue to flourish long into the future.
BETTY WETTERAU A LASTING TRIBUTE In the Westwood Atrium Courtyard, a garden bench stands at the ready to provide respite for those heading out on an adventure or for those returning home after one. But it is so much more than just a bench. It is a tribute to a life well-lived. It commemorates the life of long-time resident Betty Wetterau. Her daughter Margaret Watts Hunter says the bench is in just the right spot. “I so vividly remember mom sitting out there waiting for me to pick her up,” she says. “It’s the perfect location and a wonderful way to remember our mother.” Her sister Susan agrees. Today, Margaret and Susan continue to support the Foundation through the Honorarium Program. “We are so grateful for all Laurel Lake did to enhance mom’s quality of life during the 17 years she lived there,” Susan says.
LYNDA GRIEVES Joseph M. Lawler Leadership Award Lynda Grieves has long supported The Laurel Lake Foundation. She, and her husband Bill, first visited the Foundation offices before they even moved in. And once they moved onto campus in 2012, Lynda dedicated herself to volunteerism. She joined a handful of committees, like the Green Team, Garden and Grounds, and Marketing. She also chaired the Dining Committee. When Lynda was elected for a two-year term as president of Resident Council in 2015, she became a strong advocate for the Foundation. She was committed to further developing the long-standing relationship between the Laurel Lake Resident Association and The Laurel Lake Foundation. Recognizing her numerous years of service, Lynda was presented with the Joseph M. Lawler Leadership Award at the Foundation’s 2019 Annual Recognition Dinner. The award acknowledges those who go above and beyond in demonstrating leadership and service to support the goals and mission of the Foundation. Lynda is keeping an eye on the future of Laurel Lake. Her unwavering support of The Laurel Lake Foundation will continue to impact the quality of life for everyone at Laurel Lake now, and long into the future.

Virtual Dementia Training Resident Alan Peterson recently participated in the Virtual Dementia Tour training which provides a window into the world of Dementia. As part of the program, he took a survey asking him to rate his knowledge of dementia, put on several pieces of equipment, including an iPod, head phones and special glasses, that mimic the physical and cognitive challenges residents with dementia face every day, and then was asked to complete a series of everyday tasks within a time limit. “I was very discombobulated,” he says.
Grief Support Grief can be overwhelming and the Lighting the Way Hospice Grief Seminar series has been offering a safe, solid support system right on Laurel Lake’s campus for the past three years. “When you’re grieving, it is important to know that you’re not alone,” says Chaplain Jon Dodson. He adds that the grief seminar series also helps to dispel myths like the proper time frame for grief and rules for grieving. “There is no end date for our grief and no rules about how to grieve,” he says. The program was piloted in 2017 through a grant from The Laurel Lake Foundation. The seminar series, presented by Laurel Lake Hospice, reaches out to the more than 85 residents who have experienced grief due to the loss of a spouse or child over the past three years. Six “Lighting the Way: Life after Loss Grief Seminars” were offered in 2019 to help residents, family
“With the darkness, the lights flashing and the noises, it was very confusing.” Following the training program, Alan says he better understands why a person with dementia can be easily confused. Made possible through The Laurel Lake Foundation, VDT arrived at Laurel Lake in 2017. Since then, close to 150 staff and family members have taken the training. And because of that training, they have a better understanding and are better able to care for those dealing with dementia throughout the Laurel Lake campus.
members and friends better understand their grief and to offer practical insights, coping skills and the community support they need during times of loss. Popular programs for 2019 were “Poetry and Grief ” and “the Longest Night Lunch” near the holidays. “In December, we see the shortest daylight hours. Grief can feel like night,” Chaplain Jon says. “What helps is to keep the

It was an eye-opening experience. The program definitely helps people better understand those with dementia. I’m very glad I participated.

light shining in our life.” The “Lighting the Way” seminar series is now entering its third year with an even more comprehensive schedule. A total of 12 sessions are planned for 2020 – six specifically on grief and six on end-of-life issues. “Everyone grieves uniquely,” Chaplain Jon says, “Grief support and education can definitely help with that healing process.”
I would definitely recommend the Lighting the Way: Life after Loss Grief workshops to others. They haven’t changed my feelings of grief, but being able to talk about my grief is what’s very helpful. – Dick Haas

Seasons of Giving GIFTS FROM THE HEART CAMPAIGN CONTINUING THE MISSION
Each spring, the Foundation’s annual Gifts from the Heart campaign supports renewal by helping to bring life-enriching projects, programs and services to Laurel Lake. In 2019, bright blue hearts, honoring loved ones and special occasions, quickly filled the display hanging across from the Front Desk. Since the program began, the Foundation has received more than 1,900 Gifts from the Heart. Our donors have provided vital funding for life-enriching programs like Virtual Dementia Tour which makes sure that Laurel Lake residents facing cognitive decline receive the best care possible. Added training like this for staff can make all the difference in the world.
TRIBUTE TREE CAMPAIGN
CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF BENEVOLENCE
During the holidays, The Laurel Lake Foundation expresses gratitude for life, loved ones and a better and brighter tomorrow through the Tribute Tree program. In 2019, more than 250 snowflake tribute ornaments were added to the beautiful tree in the Laurel Lake Commons throughout the season. These special ornaments recognized loved ones, staff members, programs and exciting landmark occasions like a 90th birthday. Tribute Tree ornaments were made possible by the more than 187 gifts to the Foundation. In 2019, we also kicked off the Ramp Lounge Revitalization project that was funded through the 2018 Tribute Tree Campaign. The Ramp Lounge in Crown Center Skilled Care is truly the most “lived in” room at Laurel Lake, hosting more life-enriching daily activities than any other place on campus. Close to 50 programs are held weekly in this cozy space. The project is expected to be finished in mid-2020 and will further enhance the high level of care and compassion offered to residents in Crown Center. The 2019 Tribute Tree Kick-Off Celebration was sponsored by
