Auditorium Games for our Special Adults
What can we learn from rainbows? Dr. Larry Newquist, from the University of the Cumberlands, will discuss and demonstrate how we’ve used the rainbow to acquire information about the composition, temperature, and much more about stars. This is an Explore Space event.
The library’s auditorium will be filled with fun sports activities geared toward our special adult patrons. Cornhole games, bowling, and basketball are just a few of the exciting things that will be taking place. Participants’ caretakers need to be present. Ages 16 and older.
Mah Jongg
Calligraphy Basics Workshop
Similar to the Western game rummy, Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation. Experienced players, see if the tiles fall your way during a fun evening of play. If you’ve never played, please contact us before attending.
Want to learn how to write with an artistic flair? Experienced calligrapher, Elise Mandel, will instruct participants as she goes over the basics of calligraphy, including design, spacing, and more during this hands-on workshop.

Bite Size Learning: Gallbladder
Are you curious? Follow the Mars Rover Curiosity to learn more about the red planet. Dr. Ray Hosker, retired director of the NOAA Atmospheric Turbulence and Diffusion Division and a member of the Mars Science Laboratory launch safety review team, as he discusses the engineering and science behind this amazing undertaking. This is an Explore Space Event.
Bite Size Learning is an educational, free lunch series brought to you by Saint Joseph London KentuckyOne Health. Dr. Don Morring from KentuckyOne Surgical Associates, will discuss understanding the gallbladder, its functions, anatomy, and conditions.

Murder by the Book
Thursday, May 17th • 6-7pm Location: Kentucky Room NO REGISTRATION This month’s adventure is Thicker Than Water by Michael McDonnell. Dermot O’Hara is a police officer in a small Irish town who is assigned to investigate a U.S. Senator’s murder. As the investigation proceeds, he discovers that not everyone is who they appear to be.
NOTICE: The library will be closed in observance of Memorial day on May 27th and 28th. On Thursday, May 10th the library will not be open until 1pm for staff in-service training.
Ladies for Liberty Concert Thursday, May 17th • 6-7pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION
Let’s celebrate America! Ladies for Liberty is a singing troupe dedicated to performing the Andrews Sisters style of music through their own renditions of vocals, costumes, hairstyles, and the patriotism reminiscent of the 1940s. The music of that era reflects the spirit of those people. You can feel it in the lyrics and melodies they created. The Andrew Sisters in particular, brought a spark of relief and joy, which helped to lighten the load for the American soldier as well as the folks back home.
Writers’ Ink

If you’re interested in improving your writing skills and finding other writers to share ideas and techniques with, the library writers’ group is perfect for you. Associate Professor Amanda Morris from Somerset Community College will facilitate the session.
Paper Craft: Dogs and Cats Thursday, May 24th • 1-2pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION REQUIRED
We’ll celebrate National Pet Month by creating a dog or cat from recycled books. All materials to create the paper animals will be provided. Participants may want to bring an 8 ½” x 11” frame for display.
Strawberry Jam Workshop Thursday, May 31st • 6-7pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION REQUIRED
It’s strawberry time again, so if you love strawberries this is a class you don’t want to miss! Teressa Gibbs will take you through the jam making process from start to finish. Participants will receive a sample to take home.
OUTREACH SERVICES
Do you know someone with mobility or transportation issues who would enjoy a library delivery or bookmobile stop? Send them our way! After a simple application process, we’ll work them into our routes as soon as possible and they’ll enjoy getting fresh library materials every two weeks from our bookmobile staff. Homeschool Hangouts: Wooden Frames
Relax after school with your friends at the library! This program is all about beads! We’ll have perler beads, pony beads, and decorative beads for crafting.
It’s the end of the school year, and we’re celebrating by customizing wooden picture frames!

We’ll also have Star Wars coloring sheets and paper crafts! Doors will open at 4:30pm for activities, and the movie will start at 5pm! This is an Explore Space event.

Teen and Tween Rocketry Workshop
Whether you’re tech-savvy or just starting to learn about coding, this club is for you! We’ll be continuing an eight-part course that incorporates story-telling with coding!
Design and build an aerodynamic food transportation device that could deliver a payload of nutritious food to disaster victims with 4-H! You’ll have so much fun, you won’t even know you’re learning engineering concepts, math skills, nutrition, and helping to solve global issues. You must be ages 9-18 to participate in this program. This is an Explore Space event.

Summertime means a lot of fun outdoor, so let’s be safe while we’re having fun! An officer from the London Police Department will be here to give a summer safety talk. They’ll discuss how to be safe at the park, pool, vacation spots, and our homes.

ON DISPLAY Explore Space: Our Solar System and Beyond March 21st - May 18th Visitors will answer the age-old questions: Where did we come from, and are we alone? The exhibition will teach audiences about our universe, including how stars and planetary systems form and the role that gravity plays in our universe. Explore Space, a traveling exhibition for libraries, is part of the STAR Library Education Network (STAR_Net) led by the National Center for Interactive Learning at the Space Science Institute. Exhibit partners include the American Library Association, the Lunar and Planetary Institute, and Afterschool Alliance. Explore Space is supported through a grant from the National Science Foundation.
Flag Puzzles and Stamps May 21st - June 15th This exhibit is all about what happens when the passion for two hobbies intersect. Explore an amazing collection of flag puzzles, and flag stamps that have been collected over the years by London resident John Radecki. Mr. Radecki has preserved all of the puzzles he has put together so they can be enjoyed for many years to come.
