Spring is in the Air...

“If you can imagine it, you can achieve it; if you can dream it, you can become it.” – William Arthur Ward
hhh yes, by far my favorite time of the year! I love waking up each morning to birds chirping and the sight of flowers in bloom. Although we have been blessed with a very “spring-like” winter compared to the majority of our country, I look forward to a few more showers to bring the hillsides green again and perhaps a little more snow in our mountains to get in one last ski trip! I am so excited for March, as this kicks off our monthly production schedule! Yes, you will now be able to find a new Lavish every month at one of our 400 pick-up locations for your reading pleasure! In this issue, we searched out the best of the best restaurants who feature Asian cuisine. Disclaimer: our Fortune and Flavor story will leave you hungry! So please take a copy of Lavish with you to one of the 5 restaurants and enjoy a taste from the Orient. Another great thing about springtime is the excuse to freshen up your wardrobe! Time to put away all the sweaters and winter gear and visit one of our fabulous boutiques for today’s top spring trends. To give you a sneak peak, our Spring at Sunset fashion spread has some great ideas on how to brighten up your closet! From a pop of color with accessories to a gorgeous shade of blue in just about anything, this springtime is about having fun with accents to adorn a few staple pieces. The backdrop to this shoot could not have been more picturesque, as we were atop the grand Citizen’s Hotel in downtown Sacramento… at sunset… with an incredible view of our capital city. Stunning! Also featured in this issue is an incredible travel destination to Vancouver B.C. Our travel editor went on an unforgettable trip and has brought back some invaluable tips and recommendations when touring this fascinating city. A little closer to home, we also spotlighted Aimee Wendell with 2Chic Events and Design to help plan that unforgettable party and Ella Dining Room and Bar in Sacramento for yet another meal to remember! Thank you again for your loyal readership and I hope you all enjoy! Happy Spring and see you in April!

Aimee Wendell just wants to make people happy. What makes her happy? When a bride walks into a room and her eyes well up with tears of joy, realizing that Wendell was able to make the wedding of her dreams better than she herself could have imagined.

LAVISH ON LOCALS After working for Intel for five years, Wendell decided that it was time to start her own creative business in order to get back to what she loved. She put a six-month action plan into place and 2Chic Events & Design was born. Four years later, Wendell decided to turn her collection of event decor that she had been gathering into an event decor rental business. In January of last year, they opened The Find studio in Midtown Sacramento as a place where brides and those planning events can come in and see all of the beautiful decor that they have available in person. Since opening 2Chic Events & Design, Wendell has been a featured Planner/Designer on WeTV’s Platinum Weddings in 2009, and has been voted #1 Wedding Planner in Sacramento on KCRA-3's A-List
Simply chic... Fabulously unique “Throughout the wedding planning process Aimee was always at least five steps ahead of me, but I never really knew because she would strategically bring up information so I wouldn’t get overwhelmed or distracted. I thought this was genius!! It is so easy to get overwhelmed while planning a wedding, but Aimee always kept me at ease,” said Kelsey, a former client. Wendell, owner of 2Chic Events & Design, an awardwinning boutique wedding and events planning company in Sacramento, moved to the Folsom area about 12 years ago, when her husband’s job relocated them from Los 16
Angeles. “I immediately fell in love with the community and the beauty of the city. It definitely felt like home to me the first time I visited. Although, I do have to admit that moving here from the Los Angeles area wasn’t an easy transition for this creative girl!” Wendell began her 16 years of event planning experience while working for a non-profit organization in Los Angeles, planning events for Disney, Warner Bros., Imax and several other large firms in the entertainment industry. From there, I went to work directly for Warner Bros. Studios, working in Creative Advertising. After planning events for studios, theme parks and prop houses, she knew after the move to Sacramento that finding work in the creative industry would be difficult.
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | MARCH 2014
in 2010 and 2011. She’s often called on to provide professional advice via news interviews and segments, and has also been a sponsor of some of Sacramento’s biggest events. “I think I’ve really accomplished my goals of filling a niche in the Sacramento area and becoming involved in the community. It’s been a lot of fun, and I really feel like I’m doing something different that our area needed.” It seems that the brides that hire Wendell aren’t the only ones with fairytale endings.

with Debi THE NEW LUXURY HOMES BY KELLY SODERLUND
LOL
With the closing of 2013 and the robust initial activity of 2014 comes strong momentum in the local Luxury Home Market. This is very exciting news, as sales rose over 17% the last quarter of 2013, based on homes sold over $750,000 with the average median now reaching just over $900,000. We have come a long way since the down turn of 2008 and the flat markets that followed. The Greater Sacramento area saw a phenomenal improvement in 2013 within this market, not only in price point, but also with “days on the market”, and with most sellers actually selling at a higher percentage of their asking price as well-- some even with multiple offers. We anticipate exceeding this momentum for the balance of 2014. Granite Bay lead the last quarter of 2013 in the area with the most sales closed at 35; Sacramento had 34; and El Dorado Hills followed with 33. The average time on the market was 80 days. LAVISH ON LOCALS
So what is a luxury homebuyer really looking for in a home that is $750,000 or more? Well, it’s definitely different than in years previous. Our local real estate guru, Debi Ambroff explains why: “Several years ago, I was a part of a research group. A local builder hired a marketing company to do research, discovering what buyers wanted in a new home. I loved the idea and was eager to participate. They chose a half dozen top producing local agents; we met in a conference room at the Serrano Country Club. The conference table was filled with home décor magazines and poster boards, around which we conducted a round table discussion. The meeting was videotaped and later shared with the builder. We were each asked to create a collage with the pictures from the magazines and depict what we believed buyers desired in a new 24

home. It was certainly a different concept, but then again, who would know better than real estate agents what buyers really wanted in a new home? There were pictures of courtyards, outdoor kitchens, Mediterranean décor, wine cellars, stone, Venetian plaster, volume ceilings, rich woods, lots of arches, lots of iron- the list goes on. Not long after that session, a community was created by this builder, filled with the amenities we agents had shared at that conference table. It was very exciting to see it evolve, and this charmingly timeless community still remains to be one of the most desirable in our area. Today the trend in luxury housing has somewhat changed. Many homeowners are prepared to give up San Francisco to get the amenities they desire, but footage needs to be functional, providing
spaces that work for and with the family needs. Today’s homes may be homes of extended families with baby boomers caring for aging parents and adult children staying at home longer due to a sluggish job market. The new luxury home is, in some cases, a luxury compound with multiple dwellings. Additionally, many luxury homebuyers desire more than one home, buying smaller San Francisco residences and purchasing homes in other areas they can enjoy part-time. As far as amenities, there are still things that have held their rank in terms of importance. At the top of the list is the latest in home audio and video, as well as being energy efficient with solar. They want additional parking and garages too. Architectural lines tend to be clean and simple-- a more modern feel, and with much more focus on outdoor spaces. With the current drought concerns, they
want landscaping with drought and deer resistant plants, less lawn and more ground covers, and more interesting concrete patios- less to care for, as everyone seems to struggle with a busier lifestyle. Today’s luxury market buyer still desires the “whole package”, with an exterior as upscale and attractive as the interior. Pools still are desirable, although not as large. The empty nester would rather have the ambiance of a space to entertain around a water feature, fire pit, outdoor kitchen, flat screen TV to watch sports, and in some cases, bocce ball courts as well. The home kitchen still seems to be a priority, especially for “foodies”. The upscale stainless steel appliance package is a must, along with double ovens and two dishwashers. The built-in coffee maker remains on top on the wish list, but the huge walk-in wine cellars are being replaced
with smaller wine storage/chillers. The surprising return is white wood painted cabinetry, but granite countertops are still a mainstay, although other stone alternatives have joined them, and glass tiles to enhance the backsplash. All the new, attractive easy-care wide plank wood flooring is replacing carpet through most of the home today. Fireplaces are more interesting: instead of cast stone hearths, you will find contemporary boxes mounted on walls with unique flames, and floating hearths set against a ledger stone floor to the ceiling wall. Upscale baths feature floating vanities with under-cabinet lighting and a master bedroom closet showcase as the ultimate boutique. Lastly, man’s best friend (the family dog) has his needs, too. Some buyers are even requiring the family dog to have his own space. A doggie condo option, creating an exterior space accessible from
the house, featuring misters, shades, and automatic feeders may just be the next builder option. Watch for it.”

NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH BY ALYSSA SEVERIN
Although nutrition should be celebrated every month, March is the month where people, country-wide, take a step back to change, reassess, or encourage what they eat and why they eat it. Sponsored by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, National Nutrition Month is “designed to focus attention on the importance of making informed food choices” as well as creating long-term habits to enforce those choices. This year’s theme is “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right,” which simply reminds us that healthy food shouldn’t be something we force upon ourselves—it should be something 26
we learn to embrace; something we begin looking forward to. Farm-to-fork—a now-household term throughout the greater Sacramento region—has influenced people’s food decisions not only on a personal, familial level, but also on a broader, educational level. Restaurants pride themselves on their local and organic produce. Schools incorporate more fruits and vegetables than previous years. It seems that food, suddenly, is mattering to many people on many levels, and that influence is making its mark. One way this can be seen in our community is through larger organi-
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | MARCH 2014
zations’ efforts to provide healthy, nutrient-dense foods to those who don’t have access to it. Sacramento Food Bank, for example, provides familiesin-need with an emergency 5-day supply of groceries, 3 times a week. And as their website states: “In an effort to better move families toward selfsufficiency, grocery items such as fresh vegetables and fruit, grains and dairy are distributed instead of hot meals.” In addition, they aim to treat their recipients with dignity and respect by allowing the families to obtain their items in a farmers’ market setup rather than a simple drop-off. The Food Bank sources their produce anywhere from local grocery stores to organic farms to community donations, which allows for an astounding 22,000 individuals to receive fresh food every month. Aside from just receiving the food, families also get the opportunity to connect with where the items came from, how to prepare them, and what benefits they offer. Health and nutrition resources are available, as well as recipes, and we all know it wouldn’t be a true farmers’ market without samples, so plenty of those are offered as well. Best of all, the entirety of the Food Bank’s services cost absolutely nothing for those receiving them.
National Nutrition Month shouldn’t end when March is over. If the thought of nutrition and healthy choices raise your blood pressure rather than lower it, this month should be the time you begin learning that “enjoying the tastes of eating right” can be a really beautiful (and life-changing) thing. Being involved is also a great form of accountability, so if volunteering at a place like Sacramento Food Bank will help you learn more about nutrition, do it. The minimum age for volunteers is 10-years-old, so families who are aiming for lifestyle changes can even do it together.

Q&A
With Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Terry J. Zimmerman, M.D., F.A.C.S
Q:
HOW SHOULD ONE PROCEED IF THEY ARE CONSIDERING PLASTIC SURGERY? A: It is vitally important to first ‘do
your homework’. You don’t go to a plumber to repair your car, and thus you shouldn’t ask a pediatrician to perform your plastic surgery. www.plasticsurgery.org will give you a listing of Board certified plastic surgeons in your area, and www.mbc.ca.gov accesses the Medical Board of California’s data bank to give you background information on your surgeon. www.plasticsurgeonsofsacramento. com lists contact information for local Plastic Surgeons.
Q:
AT WHAT AGE CAN BREAST AUGMENTATION PROCEDURE BE CONSIDERED? A: It is generally accepted that one should
be at least 18 years of age before having a breast augmentation procedure to allow the breast to fully develop on its own and for the maturity of the patient.
Q:
SHOULD A BREAST IMPLANT BE PLACED ABOVE OR BENEATH THE CHEST WALL MUSCLE? A: Originally implants were placed above
the muscle, however today the vast majority of implants are placed below the muscle for a more natural appearance and lower chance of firm scarring around the implant. Some exceptions include extreme Bodybuilders, and patients with borderline droopy breasts.
28
Q:
WHAT ARE ‘GUMMY BEAR’ IMPLANTS? A: The term ‘Gummy Bear’ is not an
official medical term. The consistency of the silicone used in breast implants has changed over the years. The silicone in early implants had the consistency of honey (thick & runny). Today’s silicone implants are more similar to the consistency of jello, and are referred to as ‘high cohesive gel’ implants. There is yet another choice of implants with a firmer silicone known as ‘form stable’ implants. Consult your plastic surgeon for which implant would be most appropriate for your anatomy.
Q:
WHICH ARE BETTER, SILICONE OR SALINE IMPLANTS? A: They are both good safe implants and
each have their own positives, negatives, and indications. Silicone implants may have a more natural feel and potentially less chance of detection in a slender small breasted patient. In a larger breasted or fuller bodied patient, that is not necessarily the case. A full discussion should be had at the time of consultation.
Q:
WHAT BRAND OF IMPLANT IS THE BEST? A: While there used to be over twenty
manufacturers of breast implants, today there are primarily three manufacturers available in the US. Sientra manufactures only silicone implants, while Mentor and Allergan manufacture booth saline and silicone implants. All three companies are very reputable, with subtle differences between brands. Your plastic Surgeon will be able to explain their preference.

You’ve
Earned It: BY KELLY SODERLUND
DECADENT BEAUTY SPLURGES
After the indulgent festivities of the New Year have fizzled out, the start of a new year is usually the time we punish ourselves with Spartan resolutions, convincing ourselves that we need to “fix” various attributes of who we are. Yet this way of thinking is seriously unhealthy and can do serious damage to your self-esteem. Instead,
this New Year try congratulating yourself for successfully making it through another 12 months. Ditch the punishing mindset, and reward yourself by splurging on decadent beauty products, treatments and trends that will leave you feeling like a million bucks. Make an investment in yourself after all, you’ve earned it.
SKIN
Everyone knows diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but few know they may also be a wrinkle’s worst enemy: there has been mounting evidence for the anti-aging results generated from the precious gemstone. Forever Flawless Diamond Infused Skin Care, with a new store in the Roseville Galleria Westfield Mall, is a combination of scientific professional skin care and high-end skin care for personal use. Each product of the line contains micronized, natural, and genuine diamond powder as an exfoliating agent. Within a few applications wrinkles and fine lines diminish and other skin concerns such as age spots, acne, stretch marks etc. are significantly improved. In medical spas, while fillers and other injectables aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, Dr. Terry Zimmerman of the Zimmerman Center in Folsom says, “Trending right now are some of the nonsurgical ways of stimulating and regenerating collagen to tighten the skin, shrink pores, smooth wrinkles, and repair sun damage.” One of these options is the Fractora, which offers the most advanced fractional resurfacing by adding radio frequency. This non-ablative treatment provides a controlled wave-length to deliver a uniformed and safe dermal heating that significantly aids in skin tightening, acne scars and skin tone that one does not receive with a traditional lasers. The Rejuvapen (advanced micro-needling) offers collagen stimulation through pro-fractional resurfacing. This advanced micro-needling unlike traditional rollers, creates uniformed vertical perforations to the epidermis and lower part of dermis creates a shift in its natural repair mechanism causing the instant stimulation of collagen and elastin which in turn, results in a tighter, smoother texture and tone in addition to decreasing pore size and acne scars. “In my opinion, these are the most advanced treatments available today for tissue repair and turning back the clock on extrinsic damage,” says Zimmerman Center esthetician Katherine Evers. “Both treatments stimulate collagen and elasticity in the dermis while also significantly improving texture, color and tone of the epidermis.”

Julianne Chaffin, an esthetician and owner of the new Core Essentials Organic Skin Care in Folsom, says Oxygen Facials will continue to be popular in green skin treatments. “Most of them infuse enzymes and plant stem cells into the skin to repair lines and wrinkles, as well as lightening pigmentation.” Fans claim the gas will reboot your face for a fresher, brighter, dewy complexion. Forever Flawless Snake Venom Correcting Cream. The key ingredient in this extraordinary cream is an advanced peptide, which mimics the activity of Waglerin 1, a polypeptide found in the venom of the Temple Viper, a snake of the remote jungles of Borneo. Like Botulinum Toxin, the amino acids in this synthetic version of the Temple Viper venom block nerve signals that tell your facial muscles to contract, which prevents wrinkles from forming. ($799 at Forever Flawless in the Roseville Galleria) Zimmerman Center Treatments. Cost for the Fractora usually ranges from $750$3,500 depending on size of area and depth of treatment, however the center is offering a Spring Special of 3 treatments ($1,500 facial area). For the Rejuvapen, cost ranges usually range from $350-$400, depending on area and size. MAKEUP
Makeup is interesting and dynamic this year with a return to health and sportiness. READ: it’s all about skin. So while there are pops of color, natural glowing skin is this year’s standout. Brows, too, are natural yet structured this year— you need a groomed brow with minimalistic makeup to avoid looking sloppy. And if you anticipated the start of a new year and the onset of spring to usher in pretty pinks, you thought wrong. A fresh face paired with an orange lip is the new color du jour. Pastel instead finds its way to eye shadow, along with an ethereal dusting of white. The key to using the new color is to keep the rest of the face minimalistic. That includes the smoky eye, which, although nothing new, has more of an inky, smudged feel sans the heavy eye shadow. SPLURGE WORTHY:
Billion Dollar Brows Take Back Your Brows Kit, which contains everything you need to create the perfect, natural shape to frame your face including the Brow Buddy, a patented tool will show you where to start, arch and end your brows with precision and ease; the Universal Brow Pencil, which provides natural for all hair colors and skin tones; specially coated, stainless steel slanted tweezers guaranteed to grab every hair; and scissors, perfect for trimming those pesky brow hairs. ($45 at billiondollarbrows.com).
Mirabella Colour Sheers in Pixie ($22) is a sheer, bold orange, making it an accessible option to try out the tangerine trend. If you still feel a little daunted, Adagio for Hair also offers makeover classes with Mirabella cosmetics. Adagioforhair.com.
NAILS
Plaid patterns didn’t just dominate the runways of Saint Laurent Celine, and Milly— they made their way to nail art as well. But the tartan trend doesn’t just have to be for the grunge girl; there are also ladylike ways to wear the check pattern. Just don’t go too crazy, as the loud nail art that was all the rage of 2013 has been slightly muted: think white nails with minimalistic embellishments; metallic hues; stripes and other geometric patterns; Easter palette shades; moon manis; and fun, playful nail art. The latest pedicure treatments boast singleuse paraffin dips and natural ingredients, such as lemon and sea salt, to exfoliate the excess skin that tends to accumulate on feet.

HAIR
Donna Huston, founder of Adagio for Hair in El Dorado Hills and president of Beautimark Productions, says that leading the way in hair color trends now are complete color changes. “A ‘just change it’ attitude allows women to feel that they’ve stepped into a new season.” Adagio for Hair also offers free consultations to find the color best suited for complexion, preventing any hair color remorse. 2014 will also continue to see popularity among hair treatments such as Deep Conditioning, Brazilian Blowouts and Keratin Smoothing Treatments, which Huston says is required to tame unruly hair so stylish looks can be worn. Huston predicts popular looks that will carry over into the New Year include Old Hollywood deep-side parts, braids (romantic Renaissance an milkmaid braids, crown braids— from messy and folksy to regal) and effortless waves (from natural grunge to perfectly polished), created with wands rather than with curling irons or straighteners. Hair accessories such as headbands, cuffs for low, ornate ponytails, gold sparkling barrettes and folksy headbands, flowers, hippie headbands, leather embellished headbands, and gold-lined parts are trending as well. Adagio recommends Kerastatse Mousse Bouffant ($36) and Lift Vertige ($36) for soft fullness and waves. Both available at Adagio for Hair, 4356 Town Center Blvd, El Dorado Hills, California 95762. Thai Paradise 2770 E. BIDWELL ST., FOLSOM
Aptly named, you can find a variety of ethnic Thai dishes in a new, beautifully appointed dining room. The restaurant offers a varied menu, including appetizers, soups, salads, entrees, grills, curries, noodle and rice dishes, and authentic Thai desserts. What differentiates Thai food from other Asian dishes are its balanced flavors. Spices and sauces made from lemon grass, cilantro, curry, galangal and kaffir leaf enhances a food’s natural flavor. For some spice, the chef recommends the Spicy Noodles- pan fried rice noodles with green beans, onions, snow peas, and red bell peppers mixed with jalapeno, tomatoes, sprouts and basil tossed in a garlic chili sauce. The Spicy asparagus also kicks it up a notch. Fresh cut asparagus with onions, jalapeno, red bell pepper, and basil are mixed together, pan fried, and served over white or brown rice. If you are a curry fan, the Yellow Curry is a must. Coconut Milk curry is mixed with potatoes onion, and carrots simmered and served with white or brown rice. Thai Paradise precisely chooses their spices to produce flavors that tantalize your taste buds with every bite.

Celebrate the flavor of The Orient in Northern California
Asian cuisine is defined by carefully balanced flavors and time-tested techniques that call for maximal preparation before minimal cooking. The cuisine is rich and colorful, with aromatic flavor, and excellent taste. For many years, Asian food preparation has paid attention to aesthetic appearance, and with these characteristics, it is not only tasty but also a work of art for people to appreciate. Although many Asian cultures share the tradition of gathering the family or clan together to socialize or celebrate over a big meal, the various cultures of Asia and Japan each developed their own ethnic cuisine through the interaction of history, environment, and culture. The success of a modern Asian restaurant is
more than a balance of flavors. It’s a matter of appealing to customers who may not be familiar with the menu while paying homage to the history and tradition of the cuisine. Then, there’s sushi… The history of sushi is very long, and the interesting thing about it is that the sushi has evolved through time. At the present, the tradition of sushi has spread worldwide, and is now a fusion style sushi, or American style in many places. Fusion or American style sushi is more of a new versatile attitude towards sushi. Decisions, decisions… There are so many Asian and Japanese restaurants, and sushi hangouts to choose from, so we have taste tested our way through some of the hot, local locales.

Bringing the Outside In: HOW TO DE-STRESS
YOUR
HOME 54
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | MARCH 2014
HOW TO | SHERRIE SWASS
The start of a new year is often a time to reflect on one’s experiences of the past 12 months. During stressful periods of life, one’s home should serve as a peaceful sanctuary that fosters feelings of hope and happiness. Whether you live in a sprawling estate or a cramped apartment, it’s necessary to open up your immediate living surroundings to calm your senses and free up your mind. Additionally, bringing nature into your home can actually reduce stress. We asked Sherrie Swass, of Swass Interior Design, to offer her tips on the best ways to de-stress your interior by bringing the exterior world back indoors. Everyone needs a special place to relax in his or her home. When redecorating your home, consider places that encourage relaxation. For a great many, this usually means a place outdoors-- especially when one has a beautiful view of a forest of trees, an ocean, lake, or a river, which promotes a sense of unity with nature. However, Swass says that same feeling can be re-created by simply adding a water feature to a redesign in your yard. Yet the ability to bring that outdoor sense of space and tranquility to the inside of one’s
house is often where missteps occur in design. “The point I am trying to make is to connect your front or back yard view with the interior of your home. You will feel much more relaxed when the connection is not separated by harsh color contrasts or overly decorated window coverings. The transition between the two areas should be soft and engaging,” says Swass. Essentially, she says it’s the same concept that recognizes the mind/ body connection in relation to health issues. There needs to be a sense of unity. Where should one begin when desirous of creating a balanced, natural environment in their home? Swass suggests designing at least one room in your home that compliments and connects to the outside of your home, using nature as the inspiration. In most cases, this would be the family room or great room. The design will flow gracefully within the confines of both areas, keeping the overall feeling and appearance harmonious. “I continuously use the word “feeling” in my design because that is where it starts. I ask “you” how you want your home to “feel”. Then I begin to start the design process, which includes color scheme,

furnishings and accessories, which contribute to the entire total feel and look of your home,” says Swass. You shouldn’t buy furnishings until you really discuss how the room will work for you. Unfortunately, most people don’t realize how their purchases can make or break the feeling of their home. Most people spend a lot of time in their homes these days be aware of how it is affecting your health. Again, the more that you are connected to nature, the more relaxed you will feel. And, by feeling more relaxed, you will enjoy better health, wealth and creativity.
SHERRIE’S TIPS: PLANTS. Plants are a great way to make any room peaceful. Better yet, place trees in your most visible corners to round out those visible hard edges that pop out when you enter a room. While we all love real trees and plants, quality, keep in mind that natural-looking silk trees are much better looking than dead ones. In rooms such as bathrooms, kitchens and bedrooms, add real plants, which are smaller and much easier to care for. They also add a living element to your environment. Cut flowers also add so much to a room. A little zest of color can totally transform the feel in a space. DE-CLUTTER YOUR SPACE. Clutter is the enemy of calm. Sometimes we feel totally overwhelmed with all our… stuff. “I have been there,” says Swass. “That is also one of my attractions to feng shui. A quick tip for eliminating clutter: spend just a few minutes each day controlling your clutter. Keep, throw out and ‘relocate’”. Throw out the unnecessary pile and relocate items to their proper places in the house. LET THE LIGHT IN. Sunlight is nature’s aspirin it impacts your physical and mental health in a very positive way. Pull those shades up or back off the window. Mirrors can also be used to brighten up a room if you are lacking natural lighting due to lack of windows. Try it the energy change in a room is incredible. This also is a feng shui tip for relaxation. DIM LIGHTING. Since light boosts energy, it is reasonable to understand that turning down the lighting at the end of the day helps the transition to wind down and prepare you for sleep. REMINDERS OF MEMORIES. Remember that amazing vacay you had in Hawaii with your friends? Reliving good memories gives you a relaxed and happy outlook. Use framed photos to surround yourself with people, places and events that make you happy. Chances are, these are same things that make you feel loved reliving joyful memories is like giving yourself a hug everyday. 56

SWASS SAYS, WHILE DISCUSSING HER OWN HOME: I have always been aware of the positive influence of “nature” in the home. Several years ago, I was introduced to the meaning of feng shui. It suddenly dawned on me that this theory had been around for thousands of years. Frank Lloyd Wright died over 50 years ago, but designed homes that are timeless. His designs, from “open-plan living” to “bringing the outside in”, can be seen in our homes today. We purchased our home 15 years ago. At that time, the home was 20 years old and the design statement included the huge rock fireplaces that were placed as the focal points in the room. Most people would have remodeled and removed the dated look, but being sensitive to the original bones of the home, I realized that the fireplace in the great room connected to the large Tahoe rocks that surrounded the kidney-shaped pool in front of the home. Since glass windows separated the entire wall between the great room and outdoor patio/ pool area, it was essential to keep that connection. (See Actual Photos) By the way, this would never pass code today. Long story short, I have always been challenged by this room. All the furnishings needed to be oversized because the large rock fireplace set the

scale for all the furnishings in the room. The sofas are larger than twin size beds. We kept purchasing larger and larger televisions because the fireplace dwarfed every furnishing we brought in the home. The silk bird of paradise plants had to be raised in height by using large rustic baskets to give them proper stature since they are placed in close proximity to the fireplace.

We are all capable of making our own homes the sanctuary we need to unwind in at the end of the day, and yet most people don’t actually know how to create it. HAVE A Spring is the perfect time to fall in love with Northern California. With an abundance of outdoor and indoor activities in our backyard, you can create a day of adventure or design a weekend retreat. Pack up the kids, grab your best gal pals, or sweet talk your sweetheart and hit the road and explore this great land.
THROW A DISC. The sport of disc golf evolved as an offshoot of the many games spawned by the Frisbee® craze. The game started with people using Frisbees and aiming at targets made up of trees, trash cans, light poles, pipes, and whatever else was handy. Disc Golf players use golf discs and aim for a Disc Pole Hole, a pole extending up from the ground with chains and a basket where the disc lands. The object of the game is to complete each hole in the fewest number of throws, starting from a tee area and finishing at the Disc Pole Hole. You can find DG courses in Rocklin- ‘The Rockling DGC’, and in Sacramento at ‘John Mackey Park’. GO FLOAT. Rafting the American River can be as easy as lounging on a raft. Or, for more thrills, kick it up a notch and explore the rugged canyons by white water rafting. There are many outfitters to choose from for a wet and wild ride, or a smooth cruise. Contact whitewaterconnection.com to start your voyage. DAY AT THE MUSEUM. From Science, to cars, to railroads, to Indians, to art, the Sacramento and surrounding area are rich with museums. Spend a day at the ’Crocker Art Museum’, ‘The Discovery Museum Science & Space Center’, ‘The State Indian Museum’, ‘ The California State Museum’, ‘ The Aerospace Museum’, the’ Sacramento Children’s Museum’, or the ‘Roseville Telephone Museum’ to name just a few. RIDE A HORSE. Strap on your boots and have a city slicker adventure. Surrounding Sacramento are countless horse farms and equestrian centers for all ages, skill levels, and styles. Try the ‘Los Lagos Equestrian Inc.’ in Granite Bay and ‘Granite Bay Equestrian Center’ in Roseville, or check out Northern California’s premiere equestrian center in Rancho Murieta, ‘The Murieta Equestrian center.’ WINE TASTE. BRITISH
COLUMBIA: AN INVIGORATING VACATION CHOICE BY DON AND ANN JACKSON

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | MARCH 2014
Beautiful Victoria and Vancouver have long been on our bucket list for an extended stay and a few months ago we fulfilled that dream. We’ve been to both cities for brief cruise stops but never fully explored the regions. Our gaffe! A few folks suggested we should also consider checking out Richmond’s culinary scene, the nearby revitalized fishing town of Steveston and Whistler’s famous resort area. All recommendations proved spot on. There was so much to do if you follow our lead you should find yourself returning from a wonderful vacation very invigorated, full of memories and pleasantly tired.
Richmond & Steveston
Both these towns provided our most positive surprises. We began our stay within minutes of our airplane’s touchdown by checking into the highly publicized Fairmont Hotel in Richmond’s Vancouver International Airport. And that’s right: IN the airport not near the airport. Internationally recognized by many as the finest airport hotel in North America we can’t imagine a more deluxe airport hotel anywhere. Located in the main terminal and practically next to the control tower this newer hotel is the perfect place to hang out on arrival and before departures. Soundproof rooms, amazing staff, fine dining choices, gold floor option and close proximity to Vancouver by rail or taxi are major plusses. www.fairmont.com; Another lodging possibility to consider: River Rock Resort features tastefully decorated rooms/suites, a 1000 seat show theater offering name entertainment and a beautiful casino (Bonus: B.C. casinos are totally smoke free). Room prices at Richmond hotels
are usually lower than Vancouver hotels and often Richmond’s tourism office offers complimentary tickets to many of the top Vancouver attractions with three night stays. Richmond is also known for the town’s large Asian community, eclectic dining scene and night markets. One of our most fun and unusual culinary experiences in eons was a dim sum breakfast at Vivacity Restaurant, packed every morning with dim sum aficionados. We understand this tradition is very popular at Chinese restaurants all over town. www.vivacityrestaurant.com. While in Richmond head out to Steveston, once one of Canada’s most active fishing and cannery towns and now-sans canneries-a charming seaside destination. Strolling town and touring the historic museum-like Gulf of Georgia Cannery are musts. Our meal at Blue Canoe Waterfront Restaurant was the surprising culinary luncheon highlight of our entire trip and we understand why locals often give it their votes as a local favorite. We recommend heading out to Victoria next. Located quite a few miles away on Vancouver Island, it’s a much further journey than to the city of Vancouver so it’s better to end your vacation in Vancouver closer to the airport. A seaplane
service or a less expensive combination Pacific Coach Line bus from the airport directly to the B.C terminal and then their ferry to Victoria and return are options. We chose the bus/ferry combo and found the entire trip very enjoyableespecially the amazing island vistas, sea life viewing and the stunning waterways. Find a comfortable seat with good viewing and be sure to keep an eye out for sea life. www.bcferries.com; www.pacificcoach.com. We hunkered down at the stately Fairmont Empress Hotel our first two nights and the ultimate highlight of our Empress stay was experiencing their 95 year tradition of “Afternoon Tea” in their majestically restored Tea Lobby. dining scene. www.fairmont.com . For our last two nights we moved over to the stunning Magnolia Hotel and Spa. This newer property has received numerous accolades as one of Canada’s finest luxury hotels and deservedly so. Their accommodations, buffet breakfasts and staff were exceptional. www.magnoliahotel.com. Exploring Victoria is a relatively easy task as it’s a very walkable downtown and we encourage readers to do just that and include the following: tour the beautiful British Columbia Parliament complex and the exquisite Victorian era Craigdarroch Castle, an 1890’s mansion. Both offer tours and the tower at the castle offers the best views of Victoria. www.thecastle. ca, www.leg.bc.ca; for history buffs a visit to the Royal B. C. Museum is a must. www.royalbcmuseum.bc.ca; stroll the bustling walkways along the inner harbor,
fisherman’s wharf and Chinatown, Canada’s oldest; if you aren’t up to walking the city try taking a Hippo Tour splashing into the inner harbor for a brief cruise as well as a land route that will get you to all the highlights on the “bus that floats”. www.victoriahippotours.com; and for the ultimate highlight in Victoria take the CVS Shuttle bus (www.cvscruisevictoria. com) to Butchart Gardens, one of the most famous botanical gardens in the world and the colorful vistas we encountered were well beyond our expectations. This National Historic Site estate, formerly a worked-out quarry, provides 55 acres of truly spectacular viewing. www. butchartgardens.com; Into whale watching? With over 80 resident Orca killer whales sticking around throughout the year plus numerous other whale species and other marine mammal visitors this is one of the best whale watching locations in the world. Our out-to-sea trek on 5 Star’s high speed expedition catamaran was a very positive adventure with a profusion of whale sightings. www.5starwhales.com For everything Victoria, visit their informative website: www.tourismvictoria.com.
Vancouver
After our stay in Victoria we retraced our steps back to the ferry terminal once again utilizing Pacific Coach Lines and taking a B.C. Ferry to make the journey back to Vancouver. We stayed at three different hotels to experience different Vancouver locations and hotel types during our stay. For the first two nights we hung out at the very nice Coast Coal Harbour Hotel in the waterfront area and the following two at The Burrard, a very avant-garde property. Coal Harbour’s roof top deck with lap pool and hot tub, health club, signature restaurant, Preston’s and views of the harbor from our room were cool focal points. www.coasthotels.com. The reasonably priced and extremely hip Burrard
offered something we’d never seen at a hotel: unlimited free phone calls to anywhere in North America. Now that’s a great perk! Other high spots included free cruiser bikes and passes to the nearby Steve Nash Fitness center. www. theburrard.com. Our last three nights were at the Empire Landmark Hotel, holding claim as the tallest hotel in downtown and featuring moderate rates, unbelievable views from most all rooms and the superb top floor Cloud Nine revolving restaurant. Our dinner there was one of the three best meals we had in Vancouver and the city’s nightlight views added a wonderful romantic flair. www.empirelandmarkhotel.com. Another favorite dining experience was at the very chic and hip Pourhouse, located in the funky Gas Lamp district. This local and tourist favorite is so popular be sure to make reservations in advance. www.pourhousevancouver.com. Our most casual, yet noteworthy, dining stop was at giovane, an Italian inspired deli-bakerywinebar-market-café-shop all rolled into one delightful culinary happening in the stunning Fairmont Pacific Rim. www.fairmont.com. Quite surprisingly downtown Vancouver was very walkable, much like the smaller Victoria, so here’s our recommended “do not miss seeing and doing” list: first and foremost head off to the Vancouver Lookout for beautiful city views

One closing thought: We strongly recommend at least a two week vacation stay in western B.C. and although we were there two full weeks, a few extra days in Whistler to do more exploring of those beautiful environs would have been perfect. HEATHER ZAMARRIPA EXECUTIVE CHEF
36 HANDLES 1010 White Rock Rd. El Dorado Hills.
916-941-3606
I would say what I love most about being a Chef is the fast pace of the industry. I love the hustle and bustle of a crowded restaurant on a busy Friday night, there›s nothing better. It’s also really cool to work at a job where your product is always in demand! I think my best quality as it relates to being a Chef is probably my approachability. I›m not one of those people who runs around shouting at my staff, I feel people will work harder for you if they can relate to you and see you lead by example. Respect is something to be earned, not expected, and I think the more I show my staff that we can work hard and still have fun, the happier and more productive they will be. The inspiration for the menu at 36 Handles was definitely traditional pub fare, taking some old favorites like cottage pie and fish & chips and paying them proper homage. We wanted to show that you can make something delicious by using quality ingredients and proper cooking techniques, and that «pub food» doesn›t necessarily mean heavy, greasy food. We have a good variety of dishes, and I think that is what sets us apart from many other pubs/gastro pubs in the area. LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | MARCH 2014

BRIAN BUTLER
EXECUTIVE CHEF
LAND OCEAN RESTAURANT 2720 E Bidwell Street Folsom, (916) 984-0786 Executive Chef Brian Butler of Land Ocean Restaurant in Folsom was born in Wyoming and raised in the Central Coast of California just south of Pismo Beach. He is married to wife Katie and together have three children; Tyler, Jaxon and Wyatt. Brian attended The Art Institute of California Sacramento in 2009 and found his home at Land Ocean when the restaurant first opened its doors in 2011. Brian always enjoyed cooking and creating in the kitchen. After he and his wife planned and catered his sister’s wedding, Brian found himself in culinary school three months later. Brian’s style in the kitchen is described as eclectic. He is always creating something new and goes with the notion of whatever feels right at the time. He feels it is essential to implement simplicity when creating his menu; dishes that are easy to execute and enjoyable for all diners. Chef Brain replies with, “If you can’t replicate a dish, there is no reason to keep it on a menu!” Chef Brian recommends the Kobe Flat Iron Steak, one of the signature dishes of Land Ocean. When at home with friends and family, Chef Brian loves creating a Tri-Tip, Santa Maria style prepared in an oak pit barbeque with salt, pepper, garlic and served with salsa. His love for culinary arts and preparing a great meal has launched his career and allows diners to enjoy his incredible creations.

RAVIN PATEL
EXECUTIVE CHEF
ELLA DINING ROOM & BAR 1131 K Street (at 12th Street) Sacramento, CA 95814
916.443.3772
www.elladiningroomandbar.com Chef Ravin Patel has been with Ella Dining Room and Bar since 2009; he transitioned from a culinary career in New York to be closer to home and to raise his own family in Sacramento. Ravin’s passion and respect for food started at a very young age, when he spent countless afternoons and early weekend mornings helping his father and grandmother grow small quantities of vegetables and fruits in their backyard. In his early teens Ravin began working along side his father at their Sacramento deli and grocery store
preparing food and managing the deli counter. Chef Patel began his professional career by attending UC Davis and graduated with a B.S. in Managerial Economics, which landed him a job as a stockbroker. However, he found passion and interest in this field lacking, and after some soul searching he realized food and restaurants were his true calling. He attended French Culinary Institute in New York City to learn classic French techniques, baking, and kitchen skills. An externship at one of New York’s iconic restaurants, Montrachet, truly opened his eyes to fine dining. After the externship Ravin worked at Ian’s in the Upper East Side under Chef Ian Russo for over a year. After the restaurant was sold, Chef Ravin began working at the Michelin Star and multiple James Beard Award-winning restaurant The Modern. Under the guidance of Chef Gabriel Kreuther, Ravin spent 3 years developing and perfecting cooking techniques, management skills, and consulting for area restaurants due to his financial background and managerial capabilities. Chef Patel’s family originally hails from the Western Indian state of Gujarat, which is about 150 miles north of Mumbai. His culinary heritage is
distinctive from the traditional Northern cuisine and its curries that many think of as Indian food. The character of the Gujarati food is vegetarian-based and does not rely on sauces as heavily as Americans are used to with Indian food. Over the years Chef Patel has been able to bring his own fresh cooking perspective and unique approach to Ella. Not only was Ravin influenced by his family’s gardens and his father’s store growing up, but he also praises his mother as his main culinary influence. She cooked three meals for the whole family every day while also working full time, and Chef Patel says food was the central facet for everything his family did growing up. Whether for holidays or family gatherings, food was always the center of importance. At Ella Dining Room and Bar, Chef Patel has been an unwavering presence of talent, leadership and professionalism since day one. His personal background of culinary influences combined with his knowledge of classic techniques and dishes in addition to his managerial skills make him an unmatched and unique force in the Sacramento restaurant world. We are lucky to have him at Ella.

A destination embodying the spirit of northern Italy,
AVIO
VINEYARDS & WINERY is a place that draws you in, and makes it hard to leave.
With a tasting room in the midst of the vineyards far from the road, Avio Vineyards & Winery recreates that great Italian farmstead experience of driving through the vineyards on a journey of discovery. This Amador County wine estate is certainly reminiscent of a traditional Tuscan farmstead; an Italian style Piazza complete with a country courtyard, gorgeous gardens, a lion head fountain, and inviting pathways. The tasting bar is rustic and alluring, and the barrel room sits behind a pair of beautifully paned doors. The massive solid redwood tasting room doors are made from wood salvaged from the Pioneer drinking water tank. The stucco walls in the tasting room, which was converted from an old barn, are 10 inches thick, and the windows are authentic in style and size to those of an Italian farmhouse. Owners Stefano and Lisa Watson’s goal is to make wine in the traditional Italian style. They use old world processes passed down from generation to generation, and do it all by hand. Farming low yields and allowing grapes to show their unique character, they believe that that little manipulation is the best technique. Like their winemaking family in Avio, Italy, the Watson’s continue the tradition of producing classic wines. The Watson’s feel that wine is meant to be enjoyed with friends and family, and 74

their wines embody tradition, pride, and family. Avio has 30 acres of vineyards, broken down into five blocks and lovingly named after their Italian family and friends, which are planted to Zinfandel, Pinot Grigio, Sangiovese, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Aglianico, Orange Muscat, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. The winery sells everything but the best of their Zinfandel crop, which they keep for themselves, to a major Napa winery known for its Zinfandel wines. Avio takes pride in not producing aggressive, overpowering wines, but rather varietals that are smooth, well balanced, and food friendly. Avio practices sustainable farming and employs some rather rare farmhands to help with the process. As a supporter of animal rescue, and an active participant with A-PAL Humane Society, the estate is home to at least 60 rescued animals. Each animal has a job to do. The cats control vineyard pests. The hens lay eggs, which are used in the process of clarifying their Pinot Grigio. The llamas, goats and sheep keep the open pasturelands cleared. Amid the Avio estate, is The Carriage Room- an upscale western style overnight lodging abode. With full access to the 77 acre estate, guests can enjoy a private tasting room, outdoor kitchen, and balcony, which boasts picturesque views of the Pino Grigio
Vineyard and endless palm trees. The meticulously maintained grove of trees and rose bushes is home to happy couples as they exchange their wedding vows within the vineyards. The Watson’s bestow upon every visitor an afternoon in Italy with great family hospitality and even better wines. They have created an atmosphere in which they share their love of the land, and their guiding philosophy of “per l’amore di familglia”- for the love of family.

THIS MONTH'S PICK FROM LOCAL LODI WINERIES.
Discover a novel experience in
MCCAY CELLARS “Wine is supposed to be fun, not pretentious,” Mike McCay of McCay Cellars has said. And anyone who visits the McCay Cellars tasting room will feel anything but pretentious. Pulling from what the region has to offer, Mike McCay has crafted his tasting room much like he crafts his wines- with pride and passion. The ceilings are adorned with parachute silks as a tribute to the nearby skydiving Parachute Center. Shipping pallets used to house and transport fruit have been used to make the bar and most of the furniture. The fruit bins throughout pay homage to the prominent produce industry in this region, and have been used to create a wall on the far side of the tasting room. Graffiti art garnishes this warehouse turned tasting room leaving a lasting impression visitors aren’t soon to forget; a PHOTO: LODIWINE.COM novelty among tasting rooms. Like its tasting room, McCay Cellars is all about presence and character of its wines. A relative new comer on the Lodi wine scene, in contrast to most of the multigenerational farmers, Mike McCay has been farming in Lodi for only 35 years. Arriving on the scene in the 1980s, he planted a vineyard and started making wine in 1994. He launched his McCay Cellars label in 2007. His vision has always been to make a Zinfandel with a sense of presence and character that expresses the trueness of the vineyard. McCay describes his wine making approach is “Hands On, Hands Off.” He dedicates his attention to the vineyardshands on, and steps away from the winery- hands off. He explains, “I look for certain and unique flavor profiles out of particular vineyards.” For McCay, “It’s 76

all about the terroir in the vineyard with the ultimate goal to create the perfect balance between the vine and the fruit.” Presently, he works with seven different Zinfandel Vineyards scattered across Lodi from west to east, all with their own unique microclimates and individual characteristics. McCay possesses an assiduous work ethic overseeing all aspects of winemaking, from growing to bottling, and produces his wines in an Old World style. His grapes are handpicked, and an electric basket press is used in the crushing process. The basket press is one of the oldest designs for a grapecrushing device. Setting out to just make wine that he liked, McCay has wine enthusiasts everywhere praising his label; and rightfully so. His 2007 Jupiter Zinfandel was named one of the top 100 wines of 2010 by the San Francisco Chronicle, and his Truluck’s 2007 Zinfandel received a double-gold medal during the 2011 San Francisco Wine Competition. Many of his award-winning wines are carried
in upscale restaurants, and found in 14 states. More important than accolades, McCay revels in the simple pleasure of watching his guests enjoy his hand-crafted creations. The McCay Cellars family of wines currently includes Zinfandel, Carignan, Cab Franc, Grenache, Rose Petit Syrah, a red blend and a Rhone white blend. A small boutique family owned winery; McCay Cellars takes great pride in producing California’s best wines. Mike McCay once longed to create an atmosphere that would make people forget the outside world as soon as they step in. Mission Accomplished… and then some.

ASPARAGUS SPEARS PREP: 15
min / Cook: 20 min | YIELD: 4 servings | LEVEL: Easy
INGREDIENTS
1 pound medium asparagus (about 20 spears) 2 egg whites • Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper 1 tablespoon mayonnaise • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs 1/2 cup grated Parmesan • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning 1 teaspoon paprika • Extra-virgin olive oil DIRECTIONS
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Prepare the asparagus by trimming off the tough woody stem. Set up a breading station by whipping the egg whites and mayonnaise together (the mayonnaise helps the whites stick to the asparagus). Sprinkle with some salt and pepper. In a separate, dish add the panko, Parmesan, Italian seasoning and paprika. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and mix. Dip each asparagus spear in the egg wash and then coat evenly in the seasoned panko breadcrumbs. Place the spears on a wire rack over a baking sheet and lightly drizzle with some olive oil (this will help them crisp up). Bake until golden and crispy, 15 to 17 minutes. Serve immediately.

CAPITOL MALL SUNDAY, MARCH 9
THREE STAGES AT FOLSOM MONDAY, MARCH 10 AND TUESDAY, MARCH 11
Bringing the 5th Annual Sacramento Beer Week to a close, Capitol Beer Fest on March 9 is the celebration of local breweries, craft beers, and the people who love each. Every Sacramento brewery will be represented, as well as the 12+ food trucks who make their rounds throughout Sacramento’s streets. Additionally, 100% of the proceeds benefit the Runnin’ for Rhett Youth Fitness Program. Go online at sacramentobeerfest.com for more information or capitolbeerfest.com to purchase tickets. The event begins at 1p.m. and goes until 5p.m.
S A V E the D A T E S
Aquila Theater Production presents Fahrenheit 451, a modern retelling of Ray Bradbury’s “visionary parable of a society gone awry.” An endlessly discussed and debated novel of the twentieth century, it highlights themes of censorship, problems of technology on society, and the various ways knowledge is gained. Aquila Theater is known for “creating innovative productions of great works of literature,” and the New York Times verifies that Fahrenheit 451 won’t disappoint. There are two showings, each at 7:30p.m., on March 10 and 11. Tickets are $21-45, and students with an ID pay $12. Go online at harriscenter.net or call (916) 608-6888 for more information.

FINAL THOUGHT SPRING CLEANING
Spring
CLEANING BY EMILY VERBECK
CONQUERING THE CLOSET If you’re anything like me, closets are a clever guise for wastelands of unwanted and unnecessary items. Be it the sweater sets some distant relative sent in all the wrong sizes or boxes of extra things you just couldn’t bear to part with, if your closet is overpopulated and under organized, clearing the clutter is probably right at the top of your spring-cleaning wish list. If you’re prone to spring-cleaning blues, take your time cleaning your closets even if you just deal with one skeleton at a time. Start from the top and work your way down for maximum efficiency. For you fashionistas unwilling to part with last season’s favorites, invest in some vacuum seal bags before this spring’s new fashion results in a closet catastrophe. DUST BUNNY EXTERMINATION Over the winter season and holidays, you may have experienced the familial shaming as relatives with wandering eyes whisked their hands over your unseen, yet still dust covered, surfaces. Starting by cleaning your ventilation and air ducts can be the best way to execute dust bunnies before Easter, and more interfering houseguests arrive. Studies show clean ducts can reduce allergies and seasonal colds. RUG WRECKS Though we don’t tattle for grimy messes left behind by children, animals, and the occasional fallen glass of wine, your rugs just may spill the beans. To give your home a truly fresh, spring clean feel, enlist the help of some heavy-duty steam cleaners. If you can’t pay for the pros, local home improvement stores offer affordable carpet cleaning rentals to help destroy the evidence of left behind untidiness. In fact, yearly cleanings can greatly increase the lifespan of upholstery and carpeting. PAMPERING THE POWDER ROOM From left behind toothbrushes to unidentified soapy objects, the biggest mistake spring cleaners will make is forgetting to deep clean their powder rooms. Making sure the room where you clean yourself is, well, clean may just help improve your health and appearance for the months to come. A great homemade disinfecting solution can be made of 1 part white distilled vinegar, 1 part hydrogen peroxide, and 3 parts water. For those whose commode calamities need an extra oomph, bleach away. Just be sure to use gloves as removing layers of skin is a health risk and not a viable component of spring-cleaning.

SHELF-ISH BOOKKEEPING With magazine subscriptions and an addiction to the next best book, your shelves are likely over packed, unorganized, and non-navigable. To weather spring-cleaning, it may be time to digitize your literary drama. An excess of books can be a main cause of dust in your home, so switching to an easier to manage e-reader can help reduce your fifty shades of clutter. Look for nearby secondhand bookstores to donate anything you haven’t read in over a year. If you’re not going to use it, it’s time to tell forgotten books that while it was great, you’re just not that into them, anymore. Trust us, it’s what’s best for both of you.
Happy Cleaning!
