EDITORS NOTE

Spring breathes new life into the world around us…

H

“If you can imagine it, you can achieve it; if you can dream it, you can become it.” – William Arthur Ward

appy April Lavish readers! We are so excited to release this issue as we are wrapping up the first year Lavish has been in circulation. So many things to be thankful for and so many changes over this past year! The magazine has truly evolved and I could not be more blessed with the current team I have surrounded myself with to partner and publish this beautiful product. I could not do this without the help and support of my staff and clients, and for that I am truly thankful! One of my favorite quotes I have referred to frequently over this past year comes from Doe Zantamata: “You can’t do it all today, but you can do it. Big goals can only be reached with patience, persistence and actions in their direction a little more every single day.”   Springtime seems to give you that natural push by just looking outside! The beautiful weather, smiling faces and bright colors are just the right amount of motivation to get you moving again! This issue is no different when it comes to motivation. April is our Home and Design issue where we feature fabulous insight and photos on gorgeous kitchen and bath remodels; which may push you enough to get started on that renovation you have been putting off! Our Simply Stunning Kitchen’s and Bath’s feature is full of valuable information from top local professionals to help navigate you in the right direction.    We also have our design expert Sherrie Swass on hand once again with her tips for accessorizing your space. This is in my opinion the hardest part of putting a room together! Sherrie is here to help put the finishing touches on any design. This also includes home staging…With the markets constantly changing, we also have real estate expert Debbie Ambroff to help guide us as we look into the process of putting our house up for sale. Know someone getting married or expecting a baby? Chances are you do! According to local professionals, Sweet Cakes by Rebecca and Honey Paperie, this is the busiest time of year for all things showers! We have their insight on how to make the special day more personable and memorable with incredible ideas and displays with our April Showers feature.    Also making an appearance is our Course Classics article for all you golfers, Allure Salon & Spa for those wanting a fresh new look, and our spread on the delicious Land Ocean restaurant in Folsom – yum! Thank you all again for your support and loyal readership! See you in May!

LAVISH on LOCALS LOL

ALLURE salon & spa BY KELLY SODERLUND | PHOTOS DAN HOOD

Hot on the stilettoed heels of Co-Producing Sacramento Fashion Week (SACFW), we sat down with Missy O’Daniel, the owner of Allure Salon and Spa (in addition to mother, product educator, and oh, yeah; she styles our models for LL photo shoots, too) to figure out how this seriously busy woman manages to do it all.    Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, O’Daniel grew up in Sacramento. Raised by a single mother who taught her daughter a strong work ethic, O’Daniel went to beauty school while still in high school, attending regular classes in the morning and beauty school in the afternoon.

LAVISH ON LOCALS expanded three times its original size, becoming Allure Salon and Spa, and featuring 10 hair stations, 2 mani/ pedi stations, 3 treatment rooms, and a tanning bed. O’Daniel then opened another salon, Allure Above, with 7 stations and treatment room. After owning Allure Salon and Spa for 12 years and Allure Above for 5 years, O’Daniel decided to buy into a building to build her dream salon. In its 16th Street location now for the past 5 years, Allure has had its doors open for a grand total of 17 years.   “I am inspired to be the best I can be in every aspect of my life,” says O’Daniel. “Success and reward does not come without gratitude and hard work. I never forget where I came from, who has helped me along the way, and I am proud to share my knowledge with others as I continue to grow as a person and as a hairstylist.” This year, as a result of her hard-work and reputation, O’Daniel was asked by Sacramento Fashion Week Producer, Duane Ram, if she would accept, alongside event stylist Karri Grant, as CoProducer. She said yes. “SACFW is a huge commitment,” says O’Daniel. “I do it for several reasons: I love fashion; fashion dictates the beauty industry; I get to step away from creating beautiful hair and get to do really avant-garde hair, which is very exciting; I bring the community of hairstylists and makeup artists from all over the Sacramento region together to unite in a collaboration of us working, sharing, and learning

from each other; and I am giving back to the community doing something I love.”   In addition to collaborating with the designers to create a cohesive look for hair and makeup that also compliments their designs, SACFW provides O’Daniel with an opportunity to create avant-garde hair for select designers. It also allows her to show other hairdressers how to do this type of work. “I have to say I am so busy putting all the elements of the show together it all becomes a blur,” says O’Daniel. Hence, her deep appreciation of social media: “It allows us to experience the show all over again through photographs. This is my favorite part. I love to see all our hard work captured forever.”   “This week-long production is all put on by volunteers. We do not get paid. We do it for our love and passion for the fashion industry and the community. We do not want to be compared to any other major city or country that puts on a fashion week. We are proud to be a part of Sacramento helping each other put on the best and most prestigious fashion show Sacramento has to offer.”

While working part-time at a salon and attending Sacramento City College, O’Daniel’s boss at the time told her that she was really talented and should take some time off from school to see if she could make a career out of being a hairstylist.   O’Daniel opened her first salon, Allure Hair Design, when she was only 24. “I had no idea how I was going to run it,” says O’Daniel. “I just knew how I wasn’t going to.” Drawing upon her lifelong motto of ‘treat people how you want to be treated, O’Daniel worked by herself in a 2-chair salon for 6 months before she finally hired someone. After being in business for just a year and a half, she received Sacramento News & Review’s “Best Hairstylist” award, catapulting her career. The salon

MAKE MORE MONEY SELLING YOUR HOME BY KELLY SODERLUND

LOL

Each month we ask LL’s resident real estate guru, Debi Ambroff, to weigh off on local housing market trends. Here’s what she had to tell us.   Amid an improving housing market nationwide, the Sacramento area led the nation in year-over-year percentage median sales price growth at the close of 2013 and the beginning of 2014. Even still, says real estate guru Debi Ambroff, if you have been contemplating selling your home recently it’s imperative that you do your homework first in order to maximize your home’s selling potential. “It’s important that you investigate market conditions to learn the best time to sell,” stated Ambroff.

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | APRIL 2014

21

LOL

LAVISH ON LOCALS

“A local realtor who works in your area will know the market the best, as areas can differ. It’s imperative that you get at least two opinions; even better— three.” Selling your home is a process, Ambroff continues. “Not only are there key steps in preparing your home, which will impact the amount of money you make, but in the choosing of an agent to sell your home, which is crucial to the success of the transaction. It is truly a business partnership between the seller and the realtor.” This relationship can last as long as six months, or possibly even longer given market conditions.   Like any relationship, Ambroff says the more chemistry and communication that exists between partners, the better. Potential buyers should seek an agent that is experienced, accountable, and 22

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | APRIL 2014

is skilled in the art of both communication and negotiation. “When selling your house, marketing is the key to a successful transaction. It’s important that agents not only share marketing sales data with a seller, but more importantly, their personal marketing plan.” Sellers should seek out an agent that is able to provide their client’s home with the maximum exposure. “Marketing is a numbers game, and the more exposure a listing is given, the sooner it will attract a buyer,” says Ambroff. “There are only two reasons that your property will not sell in a normal market; either you are under-marketed, or over-priced.”    And not only is the agent that a buyer chooses list with of the utmost import— correspondingly, so is the company an agent chooses to work for. “Look for a company that has international

exposure and long-term brand recognition,” advises Ambroff. “These companies offer more resources for marketing, and are the most soughtout by corporate relocation buyers. Your realtor’s job is to get you the most money for your home— in the least amount of time, and with the least amount of inconvenience for the seller.” A good realtor will strategize and position a home’s pricing so that it will be a good value amongst the competing inventory while still securing the highest value possible. Square footage may be a benchmark for appraisal, but yet not every home is the same. Even tract model homes that are the same square footage can vary due to upgrades, amenities, location, and parcel size, which all invariably play into the ultimate list price. Ambroff points out that buyers often purchase on emotion;

they want to “love where they live.” And why shouldn’t they? It’s often the biggest purchase one makes in their entire lifetime. Sellers can optimize a house’s price point, according to Ambroff, by creating an emotionally appealing atmosphere within the home. “From the moment a potential buyer walks up to your door they have already formulated an opinion of your home— which is why it’s imperative you foster an impact at the door,” states Ambroff. “Make sure your entrance is polished, get a stylish new door mat, polish your hardware, and have colorful potted plants at the entry.”    Deep cleaning and de-cluttering the interior of your home is even more critical. Pack your family photos and memorabilia for the new home—

the buyer needs to visualize themselves living there (*see editor’s note on home staging, below). “Clutter will invariable eat away at your equity if not removed,” says Ambroff. “Create emotionally appealing spaces both inside and outside by making sure the lights are on, soft music is playing, and any exterior water features are in workingorder for each and every one of your showings.” Remember, cautioned Ambroff, the way that you live in your home is not how you sell your home, nor is it how you will optimize its final selling point. Ultimately, your home should have that staged or model home ambience, highlighting warm spaces that can’t but leave potential buyers with an impression of home.

Sherrie Swass details the differences between decorating a staged a home versus one in which actual living occurs in this month’s edition of “Sherrie Swass: The Art of Accessorizing”.

AUTISM

AWARENESS BY KIMBERLY HORG

A developmental disability, affecting the ability to communicate and interact with others, is known to most as autism. Although it affects people differently, there is no known single cause of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Increased awareness and funding is needed to help the growing number of families who are touched by it. The seventh annual World Autism Awareness Day is April 2, 2014. People in every community around the world hold fundraising and awareness-raising events. Autism Speaks is the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization founded in February 2005 by Suzanne and Bob Wright, the grandparents of a child with autism. It is committed to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism by increasing awareness and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families.

Each April 2, Autism Speaks celebrates Light It Up Blue to help raise awareness about autism. Many iconic landmarks, hotels, sporting venues, concert halls, museums, bridges and retail stores are among the hundreds of thousands of homes and communities that will change white bulbs to blue and wear blue clothes. “Light it Up Blue, our springtime awareness campaign is in full swing. So far over 11,000 people have agreed to Light it Up Blue and help spread autism awareness,” said Heather Jackson, Northern California Autism Speaks Senior Coordinator, Field Development.    After lighting it up people can visit www.lightitupblue. org to share the blue glow or make a donation. Another way is to donate $10 to Autism Speaks by texting "autism" to 25383. Charges will appear on a wireless bill or be deducted from a phone’s prepaid balance. People must

be 18 years or older to participate. Another way to raise awareness is to gear up and put on walking shoes for the Walk Now for Autism Speaks on September 21, 2014 at Raley Field in Sacramento. This event has been held in more than 100 cities across North America to raise money and awareness. For more information visit www. walknowforautismpseaks.org/sacramento. “Making the world aware of autism is an important step in improving the lives of those affected by ASD,” Jackson said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a report in 2012 that concluded that the prevalence of autism is on the rise; one in every 88 births in the United States and almost 1 in 54 boys have autism.

Q&A

With Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Terry J. Zimmerman, M.D., F.A.C.S

Q:

WHAT CAUSES STRETCH MARKS? A: Stretch marks primarily

occur during two phases of our life. The first is during puberty, and for some, the second is during pregnancy. Stretch marks are primarily due to elevated hormonal levels during these two times in life. High estrogen levels loosen the bonds of collagen which makes up our ligaments in the pelvis (so one can successfully deliver their child), and also loosens the bonds of collagen in the skin. When tension is placed on the skin during excessive growth spurts and during pregnancy, the skin is essentially tearing from the weakened collagen bonds, resulting in stretch marks.

Q: Q:

CAN STRETCH MARKS BE PREVENTED? A: One can try to keep the skin well hydrated

and moisturized during growth spurts and pregnancy, which may be of some help. But, it also depends on the characteristics of one’s skin and genetic properties.

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO REMOVE STRETCH MARKS? A: There are many skin creams advertised

to remove or reduce stretch marks. Price is not an indication of effectiveness. There is not a topical cream available that can repair the underlying collagen damage and remove stretch marks.

Q:

CAN LASERS REMOVE STRETCH MARKS? A: Some lasers, which are effective on blood

vessels (vascular lesions), may help remove some redness from a stretch mark, if present. On a shoulder, or thigh, some lasers can tighten the underlying collagen and lessen the stretch mark, but not without considerable discomfort. In general, lasers offer minimal benefit at treating stretch marks.

26

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | APRIL 2014

Q:

WHAT CAN BE DONE FOR LOOSE SKIN AND STRETCH MARKS FOLLOWING MASSIVE WEIGHT LOSS? A: Following massive weight loss, much of the elasticity is also lost from the tissue. The stretched and loose skin is usually best treated with some type of corrective reshaping and tightening surgical procedure.

Q:

WHAT ABOUT ABDOMINAL STRETCH MARKS FROM PREGNANCY? A: The most effective treatment for excessive abdominal

(tummy) stretch marks following pregnancy is removal. The skin has lost its elasticity and tone so that liposuction is usually not the proper solution. A ‘Tummy Tuck’ (abdominoplasty) is a surgery designed to remove the loose abdominal skin and stretch marks, while tightening the underlying abdominal muscles and flattening the abdomen.

April Showers BY KIMBERLY HORG

May Flowers

April showers, may flowers. The weather might not be cooperating but April baby, bridal and lingerie showers are still in full bloom. The showers are a precursor for what is to come and wedding season steadily approaching. Whether it is preparing for a wedding, a baby boy, a baby girl or a gender reveal party to surprise guests with a pink tutu cake or a co-ed jungle themed shower for mom and dad, getting the right invitations, decorations and the perfect cake; can make a lasting impression for years to come.

28

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | APRIL 2014

The first step in planning a party is picking the invitations. Honey Paperie in Lincoln is a boutique party studio that specializes in papery and party decorations for these occasions. Owner Stephanie Cooley has been creating invitations, papery and party decor since 2003. The first step in planning is to define the venue, guest list and theme. “The guest list is key,” she said. “Knowing how many guests sets the stage for every other decision made for the party.”    Cooley says after the list is made she chats about theme, color palette and papery wish lists. Popular shower themes right now are nautical showers, both for girls and boys. Fairies, butterflies, polka dots and stripes are big for baby

girls. Nautical themes for boys are really trendy this year as well. Cooley’s favorite shower to plan last year was for her niece. “I created a strawberry themed event. Cherry reds, lime greens and white. All the food had a berry element. It was super-cute and not a detail was missed,” she said.    She created papery and decor for the shower, bunting, custom table cloth, draping, polka dot balloons, soda labels, paper straws with flags, invitation, food signage, oversize paper flowers and desserts from her favorite bakery; Sweet Cakes by Rebecca. Co-Owner, Designer and Decorator of Sweet Cakes by Rebecca, Rebecca Salinas, says the strawberry themed or Clementine themed (for babies named Clementine),

rock star baby and thing and thing 2 for twins are a couple creative ones that stand out in her mind. “A very popular theme for girls and boys and for co-ed baby showers is jungle themes,” Salinas said.   She has seen an increase in gender reveal parties. These showers are usually smaller than others and take place a couple of months prior to the baby shower. She has done cakes that reveal the gender with the color of the cake, by either coloring a white cake pink 30

bridal shower and the baby shower uses more neutral colors. Gender unknown showers use a lot of classic baby themes including baby feet. For girl showers she does a lot of ruffles, bows and polka dots whereas for baby boys the “little man” theme is popular with bow ties and mustaches.   When she designs cakes for bridal showers she makes “I do” themes with engagement ring motifs. The color palette tends to be soft pinks, neutrals and silver. She has only worked with one client on a lingerie shower to create

or use strawberry cake for a girl and for boys we color the white cake a light blue. The decoration on the outside of the cake is usually pink and blue and the most popular theme for these parties are “ties or tutus”    “Pink for girls and blue for boys is still the most popular color. But we are seeing these colors paired with colors such as a gray, tan, navy, gold and black for a more current and modern look,” Salinas said. Coed showers use less flowers for the

decorated corset sugar cookies for her event. Cooley says although lingerie parties are not as popular she has seen a return to lingerie themed bridal showers in a “cutesy” or sophisticated theme. She has also seen a decrease in couple or co-ed showers over the last two years. She agrees with Salinas when it comes to pink and blue. “I would say typical gender specific color schemes always come into play,” Cooley said.   Most of Cooley’s clients have a specific theme in mind before coming in. Her clients usually plan a couple

months ahead of the shower because invitations should go out four to six weeks ahead of time. Salinas suggests contacting her three to four weeks prior to the event to secure the date and start the planning process. “I recommend starting the planning process early to avoid stress and last minute rush decisions,” Salinas said.   Although April and May are the busiest months for showers, Sweet Cakes starts making a large amount of baby shower cakes and desserts in February through April. Bridal showers are most popular in April and May but take place all summer because weddings in the area are popular in the late summer and early fall. “We create cakes for any theme that our customers can come up with and we have done countless shower cakes,” she said.   She tries to help customers decide if cake will be served to all of guests or if someone wants a smaller cake with cupcakes or a variety of desserts for the guests. Then the flavors and design enters the conversation. Its most popular cake flavor is chocolate and the favorite cupcake flavor is chocolate chip cookie dough. It’ no wonder because it is a vanilla cupcake with chocolate chip cookie dough baked at the bottom and chocolate chips baked on top swirled with vanilla frosting and garnished with a mini chocolate chip cookie. As for desserts, mini cheesecakes are the crowd pleaser. Salinas has been creating specialty cakes for almost 20 years. She opened Sweet Cakes opened in 2008. Each year she tries to develop new ideas, techniques and flavors for our customers.    “The cake is a centerpiece on a dessert table, the topper of a cupcake tower and it is always a focal point of a party. It enhances the theme and really is a decorative element for the party,” she said.    Sweet Cakes is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday by appointment only. To check out more of its cake designs visit www. sweetcakes.biz. “This is a time to celebrate and be in the moment with family and friends,” Cooley said.   Paperie is located at 436 Lincoln Boulevard, No. 104. It is closed Sunday and Monday. Visit to check out www. honeypaperie.com for more shower themes and designs.

ART OF ACCESSORIZING THE

Finally, after months (or maybe years!) of research, planning and endless shopping, you have successfully completed the task of finding the perfect “foundation” pieces for your home: sofas, sectionals, coffee tables, end tables, and maybe even the perfect corner book shelf. You’ve got all the stuff, but where do you go from there? Sherrie Swass of Swass Interior Design offers up her advice on the art of filling your space— guaranteeing that you don’t find yourself sitting in the middle of a room, frustratedly muttering, Oh, go stuff it.

Swass’ design practice has gone through several metamorphoses over the past 30 plus years. One of these stages was designing and decorating (known as staging) model homes for builders and developers during the 1990’s. “I made a concerted effort of visiting many model home subdivisions in northern and southern California. Although the styles differed in different places of California, the overall objective was the same. As a business person, I needed to keep both my builder’s needs and the financial bottom-line as a top priority, and as a design professional I needed to know who was moving into these homes.” Swass asked herself, what was the profile of these families? “I wanted my model homes to look like someone lived there. My goal was to really figure out who these families were.” Swass discovered that accessorizing the homes became instrumental in attracting the right demographics.    Swass says designing your own home is much the same. You create a plan, purchase the basic furniture that suits your needs, and fill in the spaces. Sounds easy enough, but filling in the spaces is probably the most difficult, yet most rewarding, aspect of creating your own space. While staging is a fabulous idea when preparing to sell your house, psychologically it should be approached, and produce results, opposite to the desired outcome when designing the home that you live in. Staging is about making your home an environment that anyone could image themselves in. You want your home to look balanced and cozy, while removing all personal effects, so that a potential buyer may visualize their own accessories within that space.    Regardless of whether you’re staging a house for the market or designing the home in which you actually live, the proper placement of accessories will make your home come alive. Using the right combinations of texture, patterns, and color will energize any area of the room. Additionally, Swass says that her training in feng shui has enabled her to understand the importance of proper placement and its effect on the tone, mood, and energy within a room. “If your placement is not intact, your entire room will not feel “right,” says Swass. “In consultations with clients the word feeling comes up several times. Once a client describes the desired feeling within a room, it allows us to then fill in the blanks with the right accessories. Unless you go through this process you will simply be buying stuff.” A single well-chosen item can create a dramatic change in the overall look & feel of a room. This could be an oversized mirror or a show-stopping piece of art. Large, oversized items create a focal point that demands attention so that you are able to fill in the room’s other accessories with small groupings that have memories attached to them— such as collectibles from vacations or gifts received from friends.   ‘While it is fine to use personal items to accessorize, a few “show stoppers” are necessary to demand attention and rest the eye so that the space feels grounded,” says Swass. “Our eyes want to move around the space and feel connected. A combination of oversized and small accessories will create the balance our mind craves.” Remem-

TIPS CREATE A FOCAL POINT.

This could be a fireplace, an art object, or even a window that displays a stunning view. Add Throw Pillows to Sofas. Prints or solids should be determined based on the feel of the room. ADD WINDOW COVERINGS IN AN ACCENT COLOR.

This will connect color to the accessories within the room. STORE ITEMS SMARTLY.

Use small decorative boxes or a basket to store items such as TV remotes or magazines. PERSONALIZE IT.

Add personal touches to room, such as a sculpture bought on a trip, family photos, and even trophies. PHOTOS.

These photos, shot in Swass’ design studio, show the same sofa accessorized in several different ways. Notice how the color, texture, and design plays differently on the same gray contemporary sofa. The sofa is neutral, and can therefore adapt to three different looks. In common, however, is the balance of color, texture and placement. Surprisingly, placement was the biggest challenge for Swass’ design team in prepping for the shoot.

ber, your home is a reflection of your personality. Rooms that are lived in contain lasting memories, unlike rooms that are staged for resale. Know the difference.    “My personal slogan for years has been, ‘Balanced interiors do not cost more. They just feel better,” Swass cautions. “Don’t buy accessories just to fill in space. I personally have had some accessories for over 30 years. They are part of me and have memories attached to them.” In other words, they’re not just stuff. FOR MORE INFORMATION:

Stone Wood Designs

BY KELLY SODERLUND

Hardworking professionals Tami and Allen Pierce of Davis have a passion for design, and so when faced with an outdated master bath in their new home, they knew it needed to be remodeled. And so, after doing some research, the couple turned to

Janice Stone Thomas of the award-winning Sacramento-based StoneWood Design, Inc. to manifest their dream of creating their own spa sanctuary right in their master suite.

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | APRIL 2014

41

Tami, a busy veterinary doctor and professor, has an intense love of great design, consuming countless books on the subject and devoutly following programs such as “Divine Bathrooms with Candice Olson” and “Top 10 Designer Bathrooms.” Her husband Allen, who travels around the world for work, garnered inspiration from his sojourns at hotels that offered luxuriously relaxing bath retreats with modern lines. Communicating through marked pages in design books, and by sharing photos of the bathroom in their favorite lodge in Carmel, California, Tami and Allen expressed what they found pleasing and important for the new bathroom- they wanted a an oasis of calm. The couple employed evocative phrases to describe the feel they wished to evoke: contemporary; Asian elements; simple, evoking a calm serenity; dark wood and glass tiles. The bath space they dreamed of would have a shower large enough for two, as well as a separate bathtub for relaxing and soaking while reading. Additionally, they asked for organized storage and pet friendly surfaces— and the entire plan needed to stay within the existing building envelope.   Stone Thomas says this is exactly the type of project that she gets excited about— one that allows her to do what she does best: design. The company that she founded, StoneWood Design, has been designing consistently award-winning interiors throughout the Sacramento-area and northern California for over 20 years. Featured in

publications such as Sunset Magazine, Bon Appetit and House Beautiful, to date StoneWood Design has completed over 600 jobs, ranging in from new construction projects to complete home overhauls.   To achieve the results the Pierces’ desired feel, Stone Thomas suggested shapes and door openings that gave a that little extra space: a sliding door with textured glass panel over water closet, shaped wall in the shower, and locker-like storage cabinets for each partner. To enhance the feeling of serenity in the room, Stone Thomas and Alia Richards, a senior designer at Stone-Wood Design, Inc., created a ceiling treatment with a barrel-shaped vault, highlighted by indirect trough lighting.    Nar of Nar Fine Carpentry, Inc. was selected as the contractor. With over 25 years of building experience with challenging and innovative design projects, Nar’s credentials include NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry). The couple had a high regard for design, trusted their professionals, and had high standards for finishes. It paid off: not only did the Pierces’ remodel win 1st Place in the Medium/Large Bathroom category of the 2014

National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) CA Capital Chapter Design Competition (StoneWood Design took both 2nd and 3rd Place as well, for other projects), it also won 2nd Place in NKBA’s National Design Competition, and had the further distinction of winning HGTV’s “People’s Pick” after garnering the most repins on Pinterest.

KNOW WHAT YOU WANT

If you’ve been contemplating a remodel of your kitchen, or like the Pierces, your bath, you’re not alone. The two rooms that most increase a home’s value, kitchens and baths were the most popular rooms for remodeling projects last year, according to the 2013 National Association of Realtors Profile of Buyers’ Home Features Preferences. Indeed, Stone Thomas says that by the time her clients sit down with her, most have already researched the internet, taken notes from HGTV, or like the Pierces, created style-books of designs they had admired or hoped to replicate. Regardless of how complete a client’s vision, Stone Thomas walks them through a questionnaire to solidify the plan, asking, what do you like

most about your kitchen/ bath now? What’s your lifestyle; how do you live and entertain? How do you want the room to feel? Does an owner want double-ovens, or are they determined to have framed cabinets and inlayed appliances? Are you remodeling to increase the sale-potential of your home, or because you want to stay in it forever?   The point is, most owners aren’t aware of the minute details of a remodel that are necessary to increase the functional and aesthetic value of their home — or for that matter, even what they actually want. Additionally, Stone Thomas says that remodeling to put your house on the market differs greatly than extending its shelf-life for your family. Kerrie Kelly, of Kerrie Kelly Design Lab in Sacramento, adds that many of her clients think they are “contemporary”, when the aesthetic they are describing is really transitional or warm modern.

The 2014 Best of Houzz winner for both design and customer satisfaction, Kelly says, “Whereas traditional and modern schemes may introduce a few opposing elements in their designs, transitional style strikes the perfect balance between the two with simple lines, neutral color scheme, and use of light and warmth.” Stone Thomas agrees, saying that in terms of style, Old World Tuscan and French Country are out. “Everyone is going more modern and simple, with clean lines.”

KEEP FUNCTION TOP PRIORITY.

Lighting can single handily make or break the mood of a space, including your bath and kitchen. With Stone Thomas’ bath remodel for the Pierces, indirect lighting was key to capturing an oasis-like feel. For the kitchen, Kelly says, “You want family and guests to feel comfortable, but

you also want to keep the area light enough so that everyone can see each other and the tasks they may be working on.” She suggests layering different types of lighting on dimmers via LED can lighting, under-cabinet lights and pendants to ensure that you always have enough light— and can turn it down if you choose.    Prewiring a kitchen for sound is another important function commonly overlooked, says Kelly. Doing this one thing while your home is being renovated will save you cost and the hassle of opening up walls once you have moved back in. “Speakers and tablets can come in later, however, you will be thrilled to know you will have the luxury of surround sound, a great playlist and all of your recipes come weeknight dinner time or special soiree.” Both Kelly and Stone Thomas stress the importances of being aware of your home’s major traffic flows and go-around areas. Stone Thomas suggests creating “zones” in the kitchen, such as prep and clean-up, to ensure that no one is stepping on each other’s toes. Nothing sees more traffic in the kitchen, however, than the sink. “A great sink is a kitchen essential,” says Kelly. Consider stainless steel versions that let you leverage day to day activ-

ity without scratching (Kohler has just launched a new model). With certain versions, built-in drain boards and cutting boards can conceal the sink when it’s not in use.    Want your island to be the hub of your home? Kelly says it should be planned carefully, leaving enough space behind it for guests to pull out stools without hitting a wall around 36” to 60”. Also, give yourself wide enough work aisles 42” to 48”--so your family members don’t bump on either end. Cap the island ends with appliances you are likely to use, such as ice-makers and microwave drawers, so they’re easier to reach without interrupting your cooking flow. Lastly, plan a comfortable countertop overhang of 15” for counter or bar heights.   Countertops are another style issue that has changed due to clients’ demands for functionality. Granite, once so popular, is being replaced with quartz, which is slightly cheaper and more durable, with cleaner lines. Kelly recommends Silestone and Dekton solid surfaces from Cosentino, which allow both beauty and function to prevail in the kitchen— cut, move pots and pans from oven to countertop, without a worry. If you enjoy entertaining with wine, a wine refrigerator is a valuable addition to your island. Kelly suggests selecting one with enough capacity for your storage and serving needs. If you vary your collection between red and white wines, you might want to consider a dual zone model to accommodate the refrigeration needs of both.   Kelly also suggests owners should consider installing two dishwashers to make clean-up a breeze. Dishwashers can be rotated for use, or you may try standard dishwasher with a back-up of a dishwasher drawer for smaller runs. If the layout allows, combining your kitchen, dining and living areas is a simple way to maximize seating room

in one space. However, she warns, you should be careful to avoid “barrier” furniture between the two areas, so the entire space feels more connected. In the bath, Stone Thomas suggests locker systems for towels, bathrobes and slippers. Again, how you want the room to function for your lifestyle is key. Double showers? Steam shower? Private toilets? Double sinks? Double or stand-alone vanities? Closet-walk through? Warmed tile? There are a million time and space saving options. It all depends on how your family functions on a daily basis and what will make your life just that much easier.

DIY IT.

If a complete overhaul like the Pierces’ eludes your budget ceiling, Dustin Smith of Smith Development & Construction Co., says there are still a few tried-and-true tips that will add value to these spaces. “Given all the time we spend in the kitchen and bath, we ought to make these spaces a main focus of our homes. While the sky’s the limit, you don’t have to be a Saudi prince to do so.”    If the kitchen is a bit dated, Smith suggests first considering adding a back splash or replacing a tired color scheme with newer updated coloring.

Given the small size of this space within a kitchen, adding or replacing backsplash tiling here is surprisingly simple and will give you a great bang for your buck. Replacing the faucet and sink is a given when updating a kitchen and a task that, again, is much easier than one might think. For those more adventuresome, Smith next suggests cabinetry updates. “Adding new hardware is as easy as it gets in order to change things up, and resurfacing cabinets, rather than replacing, makes or a great DIY project that will make a world of difference in the look and feel of this space.”    If the budget allows, flooring is the final touch. Here, says Smith, think anything besides vinyl and you can’t go wrong. These days there are a multitude of tiling and laminates choices, and the newer plank tiling that is an especially great substitute for traditional wooden flooring. In the bathroom, Smith claims a new coat of paint goes a long way, as does the addition of crown molding or baseboards. “While many shy away from these as a DIY projects, moldings or boards can be miter-cut at almost any local big box retailer,” says Smith. “Just remember measure twice, cut once.” The size of this room makes this a fairly simple, but elegant addition.    The new hardware is easy enough to try a simple

stand-alone vanity, or mix it up using a wall-mounted or table top vessel sink for a more modern look. Like in the kitchen, stresses Smith, flooring in the bath should again be accomplished with anything besides vinyl; stick with tile or laminates. Smith concludes, “DIY in these two rooms will make a huge difference in your homes look and feel, along with bringing you a great sense of accomplishment no matter how far you take it.”

DON’T get started on construction without buying most of your materials, especially fixtures. Know the lead time; a good contractor should help, but it needs to be all lined up.

DON’T remodel a kitchen during the winter. It’s easier to BBQ when it’s nice outside. DO stay in close communication with your contractor, so that you are well-informed and are comfortable with them being in the house for an extended period of time. DON’T get too anxious; manage your expectations ahead of time.

rse ssics    California has some of the most beautiful scenic areas in the world, some of which are designated as golf courses. A handful are in the foothills and surrounding communities, which offer the elegance of the nationally acclaimed golf clubs sprawled along the coast and mountain ranges of the golden state. The Ridge Golf Course & Events Center in Auburn, Granite Bay Golf Club in Granite Bay and Rancho Murieta Country Club in Rancho Murieta are all a local choices, packed with all the amenities a golfer can expect from high end golf course frequented by celebrities.

GRANITE BAY GOLF CLUB is thought of a modern classic, also designed by Jones Jr. and Kyle Phillips. The Club has received numerous awards for its course design, greens and clubhouse. With its signature hole located at number16, the course is a par 71 and slope rating on Granite Tees is 134, it is another popular choice in the area. For dining options it has Tilly’s and a more formal restaurant, Mackenzie and The Cobble Cafe, located outside the golf shop (located at the first and 10th tees) also offers snacks. Because it is a private club, public play is limited Mondays only. The cost varies with season. It has event room available for special events and can be booked by calling (916)791-7578. It is located at 9600 Golf Club Drive in Granite Bay.

NEARBY IS RANCHO MURIETA COUNTRY CLUB. Although it is private, golfers do not need to be a resident of Rancho Murieta to become a member. Non members need to be a guest of a member, a member of another country club or a guest of a charity golf tournament. The slope rating for the north course is 130 from the golf tees and 129 on the south. Both courses are a par 72 and were built in the 1970s. “We are a unique club because we cater to all ages. We have generations of families here,” Adrienne Grevious, Membership & Events Coordinator, said. She says because it has two championship quality courses, members have access to two courses for the price of one. Its reciprocal rate is $95 to $105. For more information call (916) 354-3421. 50

THE RIDGE is only one out of three golf courses in Northern California to host an LPGA Tour Golf tournament (in 2004 and 2005). It was built in 1999 and is open all year long. It usually gets around 40,000 rounds a year. “We are considered the best conditioned course in the foothills,” Jerry J. Rogers, The Ridge tournament and marketing director, said.   It has 18 holes and the course is a Par 71. Slope rating (level of difficulty for the course) varies from back tees (gold); slope is 73.0, rating is 140. White tees slope is 68.7 and the rating is 130. According to Rogers, the overall experience people get there is what makes it worthwhile. “You play amidst 100 year old oaks trees and not around any residential homes. Our customers often comment on the amazing panoramic views of the natural landscape,” he said. Course designer Robert Trent Jones Jr. says every hole is a signature hole on the course. Each hole is unique in its own way. The green fee ranges from $30 to $65. The Ridge Bar & Grill is open every day. The Ridge is also an event center, hosting golf tournaments, weddings, private, corporate and holiday parties.    It was voted best of the best golf course in the foothills and best of the best wedding facility by the Auburn Journal. The Ridge is located at 2020 Golf Course Road in Auburn. Guests can book up to two weeks in advance. To book a tee time, call (530) 888-7888.

Spyglass Hill Golf Course.    All courses at Pebble Beach Resorts are opened throughout the year and are public facilities. Tee times at all courses can be made more than six months in advance, but it does require a two-night minimum stay at one of its hotel properties to play Pebble Beach Golf Links. The cost per round is $495. Golf Links was

built in 1919. Designed by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant, the course is along the coastline, providing wideopen vistas, cliff side fairways and sloping greens. It has been the site of golf’s most prestigious tournaments including the annual AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, and five U.S. Open Championships including the 2010 U.S. Open. “We are excited and honored to welcome back the U.S. Open to Pebble Beach for the sixth time in 2019! Every golfer deserves to play ‘Pebble’ at least once in his or her life,” Ryan Pierce Pebble Beach Company Public Relations and Marketing Manager, said.    Golf Links is America’s number one public golf course, as rated by Golf Digest. The slope rating is 145 from the Blue tees. The signature holes are 7, 8, 9, 10, 17 and 18. “Combine a dramatic coastline and mystical forest with a rich history of world-class accommodations, warm hospitality, expert service and grand recreation. Perhaps nowhere else on the planet does this combination come together quite like Pebble Beach,” Pierce said. He says players sense the presence of golf’s biggest legends; recounting some of the greatest moments in golf history. Visit www.pebblebeach.com for more general information on Pebble Beach Resorts. Spyglass Hill Golf Course is themed from Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel, Treasure Island, created by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1966. It features two distinctly different kinds of terrain that influence the way the holes play. The first five holes are through sandy dunes. The following 13 holes are cut through pines with elevated greens and strategically placed bunkers and lakes.   According to Pierce, Spyglass Hill Golf Course is

rated one of the toughest courses in the world from the Championship tees, boasting a course rating of 75.5 and a slope rating of 147. The PGA TOUR consistently lists Spyglass Hill’s holes 6, 8 and 16 among the toughest. The slope rating at Spyglass Hill Golf Course is 144 from the Blue tees. The signature holes are 1, 4 and 8. The cost per round is $370. If traveling to southern California, the Malibu Golf Club is located in a serene setting away from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. “With some of the most diverse scenery found anywhere, this course is a truly a golfer’s paradise,” Malibu Golf Club Director of Sales and Marketing, Beth Pearcey Neal, said. The course was designed by William F. Bell in 1977. It has a course rating of 72.5, slope rating of 132 and there are 6,740 yards of golf on this par-72 course. Neal says the unique terrain of the course means that the direction of the wind can change from one hole to the next. As a result, golfers may need to modify strategies in order to maintain par. The majority of the 18 holes are constructed so that the fairways are below the tee and the greens are situated above the fairways. “You’ll need to add two strokes to your scorecard if you hit above the hole,” she said.    Although it doesn’t have a driving range, it does have a netted area where people can practice, in addition to a chipping green and putting green. The grounds can be compared to other private golf courses but it is open to the public and does not require a membership in order to play. People need to book two weeks in advance for a tee time. Santa

barbara BY DON AND ANN JACKSON

The Quintessential Beach City! Santa Barbara has long been known as The American Riviera, and for good reasons. In our eyes, no other U.S city delivers such a dramatic seaside setting reminding us so much of the European Riviera and especially Spain’s Mediterranean coast. The spectacular mountain and ocean landscapes are awe inspiring, and the ever-present Spanish influences provide visitors a setting unparalleled in this country. This is one of those rare cities where most folks who live there are ecstatic to call it home, and many of us who visit wish we could move there. City envy prevails! So what else is there about Santa Barbara that has turned us and other vacationers into lifelong devotees? Well, read on!

SANTA BARBARA

What

TO DO:

What

TO SEE:

Any city with such a fantastic harbor, pristine beaches and extraordinary seashore lends itself to all the water sports and activities you might expect. Sailing, kayaking, surfing, ocean swims, standup paddle surfing, deep sea fishing and any type of boating await. The Discovery Channel proclaimed that the Santa Barbara channel is some of the best year-round whale watching sites on the planet, and on our recent trip, we saw plenty of grey whales cavorting on their way north. www.condorexpress.com. Beach walks and biking or strolls along the picturesque Cabrillo Boulevard pathways are always pleasant. Hiking trails in the nearby mountains can be physically exhilarating and provide unparalleled views of the city, coastline and offshore islands. Wine lovers should head for the Urban Wine Trail, where a number of local wineries have tasting rooms within a few blocks of each other and near the beachfront. www.urbanwinetrailsb.com. Our personal favorite: Santa Barbara Winery. www.sbwinery.com.

One of the first places visitors should go is the county courthouse’s tower for wonderful vistas of the city. There isn’t a courthouse anywhere in California that compares to this imposing Spanish-Moorish architectural gem. And be sure to take an enlightening complimentary tour of the building itself, and then drive by during evening hours to view the magnificent night-lit splendor. www.santabarbaracourthouse.org. Must-visits include: Mission Santa Barbara with its distinctive twin bell towers- the universally proclaimed Queen of California Missions has been beautifully maintained; Santa Barbara Zoo- large enough to display some magnificent animal enclosures but small enough to explore in a day or less, especially with young children; Botanic Garden- 78 acres of native California fauna that invites exploration. Other recommended options, depending on interest, include: the highly regarded Museum of Art downtown and the Maritime Museum at the harbor; enticing yesteryear tours of Casa del Herrero and Lotusland, two notable estates and gardens in the upscale Montecito residential enclave (also noted for many celebrity estates); family friendly Ty Warner Sea Center on Stearn’s Wharf; and historic El Presidio State Park downtown.

Whether on land or sea, Land Ocean Restaurant (LO) in Folsom offers the best of both worlds; fresh fish, hand cuts steaks in an atmosphere suitable for any crowd.    LO New American Grill is the second restaurant Folsom residents Mark and Karoline Platt opened (in May of 2011). The Platts are also the owners of Sienna Restaurant in El Dorado Hills, which opened in February 2010. The couple has 35 years experience in the restaurant industry as well as in hospitality so meeting customer needs comes natural to these restaurant owners.

LAND OCEAN Guests can contact the front desk for reservations. For the restaurant, reservations are welcomed but it takes walk-ins as well. “We are proud of our restaurants and have an amazing team of employees who are dedicated to us and their performance. This carries over to the service we extend to our customers and the food that we serve,” Platt said.   It is open for lunch or dinner on Monday and Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday doors open 11:30 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. and on Sunday the hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. It also offers weekend brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. as well as happy hour, Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m.

The new American cuisine fits well in the inviting and casual setting equipped with all booth seating. The comfortable booths with rich wood tables wrap around the restaurant with amber lighting to set the mood. It circles the glowing bar in the middle, fully equipped with a wall of candles and lighted wine cabinets that make it shine from below while copper globes float above the bar, highlighting the premium liquor selection. “Warm and inviting, with a sexy, swanky vibe but not snobbish,” Karoline Platt said. “It’s a special place in this suburban community.”    According to Platt, it is upscale casual. Customers feel comfortable dressed up as well as in casual attire. This environment is enhanced by its diverse menu; people can come in for steak and lobster or just a sandwich or salad. It uses fresh produce on its separate lunch and dinner menus prepared by Executive Chef Brian Butler. The number one selling entrée is its macadamia nut

crusted sea bass, followed by its Land Ocean filet and lobster and the signature beef tenderloin wellingtons on its appetizer menu.    The chef’s pick is the American Kobe flatiron steak. The flatiron steak is charbroiled at 1800 degrees to the proper temperature and sliced per order. The fingerling potatoes and broccolini are sautéed in house made herb butter (thyme, oregano and garlic). It is then plated together and topped with a house made jalapeno, cilantro butter. “Our culinary team has crafted a menu evoking the taste of the American palate featuring hand cut steaks, a wood fired rotisserie and fresh seafood,” Karoline said. Platt says the new American steakhouse is a place for great food with a comfortable atmosphere at a reasonable price point. Because it likes to stay in tune with its customers’ requests, it started the fitness special at Sienna and carried it over to LO. It was created to offer guests a low calorie option for those wanting to eat healthier. It changes weekly and is always 450 calories or less.   Gluten Free was also added to its menus to stay ahead of the game when it comes to dietary needs. And children are always welcome at LO. The kid’s menu has little ones top picks including a root beer float. For the older kids, the shining bar holds an extensive wine list consisting of approximately 60 wines, mostly from the Napa and Amador region. It signature drink is the Jalapeno Martini or the Special K Martini (named after Platt), a pomegranate martini with orange infused vodka.    For private parties, the glass encased Onyx Room is available to accommodate eight to 12 guests.

AMOUR PRIVÉ

Chosen as the exclusive red wine of the 56th Grammys, Amour Privé celebrates life with each sip.

Provocative, passionate, luxurious… just a few of the words that have been used to describe Amour Privé handcrafted ultra-premium Bordeaux styled Napa wines. A boutique winery with limited reserve wines, Amour Privé offers three unique blend wines from Napa grown grapes, which have received local and national acclaim. Nestled in the Sierra Foothills near Napa Valley, offbeat boutique winery Amour Privé has been producing a few hundred cases of their handcrafted wines since 2008. The winery was started as a result of many trips abroad to France among other countries. Amour Privé wanted to bring some of the passion for wine and winemaking to this region from Bordeaux, thus resulting in the creation of their proprietary blends. Each bottle they create is cossetted- from fruit inception, through meticulous fermentation and crush, to reposing in French oak barrels for at least two years. Their annual productions quantities are small and their finished product yields a consistent world class wine.    Hand crafting a personal luxury wine experience, Amour Privé’s story is as scrupulous as their unrivaled wine. Winemaker Matt Wozniak aspired to create a suite of world class, premium red wines, thus he enrolled in UC Davis’ world class Winemaker’s Certification program in 2007. A former CEO, world traveler, entrepreneur, fixed wing and helicopter 62

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | APRIL 2014

pilot, aircraft mechanic, private investigator, Mt. Everest Expedition Team member, Wozniak dove into his newest pursuit. Committed to the pursuit of perfection and never shying away from a challenge, Wozniak created a boutique winery on his property nuzzled in the Sierra Foothills. Building many of the facilities components himself, the winery includes a barrel storage cave, gravity fed sorting and destemming tools, extended maceration and settling tanks, corking and bottle filling stations. Wozniak soon came to realize that due to climate challenges and soil constraints, world class fruit was not going to come out of the Sierra Foothills. Excellence would not escape Wozniak. He concluded he would lease vineyards in Napa Valley. Hand-harvested cold fruit is delivered from Napa to the winery overnight. Hand harvesting the grapes eliminates fruit bruising and maximizes its flavor, though it laborious work and very costly. Wozniak says, “It is Napa’s world-class quality and reputation rather than its size that has earned its top position. As with France and its Grand Cru regions, Napa has distinct microclimates within its boundaries, 23 to be precise. The variation in each of these microclimates produces profound and unique variations in each grape this is where the magic lives and where we find the story of Amour Privé.”    Amour Privé’s prize wines are their Hommage Rive

Gauche a “left bank’ Cabernet Sauvignon dominant Bordeaux style blend, Hommage Rive Droite- a “right bank” Merlot dominant Bordeaux style blend, and Cuvee Noire- a proprietary Bordeaux style blend. Their philosophy of excellence combined with firstrate training to produce unmatched, premiere wine is proving evident in their rave reviews by their chic followers and hard-hitting critics alike. It’s no wonder they were selected as the elite red wine of this year’s Grammy awards, and poured a pre-party event honoring Neil Young earlier this year- an esteemed claim few can boast. Find Amour Privé at one of their many scheduled tasting events, or in fine restaurants, bed & breakfasts, country clubs, and events and private parties. Seek out Amour Privé for a truly exquisite, unique wine that is delicately created and custom crafted, and you will indubitably enjoy a wine experience nothing short of brilliant.

WINE PICKS | LODI

C A L L O DI W INES

THIS MONTH'S PICK FROM LOCAL LODI WINERIES.

JEREMY WINE CO. BY HEATHER REAGAN

Situated just steps away from the famous Lodi Arch, Jeremy Wine Co. boasts robust red wines.    The Jeremy Wine Company style is more intuitive than analytical. Jeremy Wine Company winery is located just inside of the Lodi city limits in an industrial section of town, and owned by Jeremy and Choral Trettavik. Their journey to winemaking has been a circuitous one. A Lodi native, Jeremy Trettavik began his stint in the wine industry working for Sebastiani’s in Sonoma County. From there, he shifted to Gnekow Family Winery and worked in sales and marketing for the small family winery. In 2003, he married his now wife Choral and opened a design company to etch wine bottles, which eventually evolved into designing wine labels. Unfortunately, or fortunately for Jeremy and Choral, that endeavor didn’t last. Looking for a venture they could control every aspect of the business themselves, they discovered winemaking- an inevitable fate Choral explains, “When I married Jeremy,

I realized to love Jeremy meant to love wine as well.” The eager couple recalled that their favorite memories were those which were centered around a bountiful table of delicious food and superb wine shared with friends and loved ones. So, they set out to achieve their dream of making their own wine, and whoa la, Jeremy Wine Company was born. “It’s kind of incredible that we’re doing the same work people have done for thousands of years,” says Jeremy with pride. On most days and evenings from September-November you can find Jeremy and Choral punching down, pressing and crushing. “We’re getting our hands dirty and tasting the wines all the way, doing what we love- making great wine.”    The couple focuses on creating small production artisan wines that are handcrafted with passion and determination. They feature red blends and varietals, including Zinfandel, Barbera, Sangiovese, Temperanillo, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Their newest release is a delectable Chocolate Port, a sweet, yet very complex dessert wine. The Jeremy Wine Co. unique ‘J’ label tells the story of Jeremy’s 40,000 hours in the wine industry. Their tasting room is located downtown Lodi on Pine Street and is rich with history and individuality. The building dates from the early 1900’s and boasts bright, open windows and original wood floors The distinctive tasting bar complete with a brass footrest dates back to the mid 1800’s and was housed in a small saloon in Wyoming. It’s a cozy and comfortable space which pays homage to its owners. You can find Jeremy and Choral, and their adored dog Ladybug in the tasting room connecting with their customers, sharing their wine… living their dream.

WINE TOURS & TASTINGS

The Lodi winemaking industry has enjoyed tremendous expansion in the last decade. The land devoted to vineyards has increased from 46,000 acres in 1996 to nearly 100,000 today. Now the region produces more fine wine than Napa and Sonoma combined! The Lodi appellation is proudly blowing away the mists of anonymity that have shrouded local wines, allowing them to bask in the sunshine of worldwide recognition. We invite you to take a short ride and discover Lodi Wine Country for yourself.

SEASON DELIGHT

SEASON DELIGHT

BY EMILY VERBECK

ARTICHOKE   As an aphrodisiac, diuretic, and breath freshener, artichokes are quickly becoming our seasonal delight for April. The artichoke is the bud of a beautiful Mediterranean flower that has been used for centuries for a wide variety of health purposes. While at first glance it’s prickly appearance doesn’t always spark an appetite with all the powerful healing attributes, we’re confident your mouth will be watering in no time at all. Because artichokes have been found to be a strong source of vitamin K, C, folate, tons of antioxidants and fiber, all of which have been proven to increase weight loss and energy. They

66

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | APRIL 2014

just might be the most rewarding veggie you find at this month’s farmer’s markets. For those of you looking to shed some pounds or spice up your love life, adding in artichokes to your diet could have those positive effects you’ve been looking for. Due to the sturdy exterior, cooking an artichoke may be tough for the cooking novice. The best way to get to the edible parts is to trim the spikes and tougher leaves before cooking or consuming. For optimal health benefits try recipes that include baking and steaming to ensure you get the most out of this delicious, green super food.

ARTICHOKES WITH

ROASTED

GARLIC-WINE DIP INGREDIENTS

2 whole garlic heads 4 medium artichokes (about 3 1/2 pounds) 1/2 cup dry white wine 1 cup organic vegetable broth (such as Swanson Certified Organic) 1 tablespoon butter 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt Chopped fresh parsley (optional) PREPARATION 1. Preheat oven to 400°. 2. Remove white papery

skin from garlic heads (do not peel or separate the cloves). Wrap each head separately in foil. Bake at 400° for 45 minutes; cool 10 minutes. Separate cloves; squeeze to extract garlic pulp. Discard skins. 3. Cut off stems of artichokes, and remove bottom leaves. Trim about 1/2 inch from tops of artichokes. Place artichokes, stem ends down, in a large Dutch oven filled two-thirds with water; bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 45 minutes or until a leaf near the center of each artichoke pulls out easily. Remove artichokes from pan. 4. Combine half of garlic pulp and wine in a small saucepan; bring to a boil. Cook 2 minutes. Add broth; cook until reduced to 1/2 cup (about 8 minutes). Remove from heat; stir in butter and salt. Pour mixture into a blender; add remaining half of garlic pulp. Remove center piece of blender lid (to allow steam to escape); secure blender lid on blender. Place a clean towel over opening in blender lid (to avoid splatters). Blend until smooth. Sprinkle dip with parsley, if desired. Serve dip with warm artichokes.

PAPPARDELLE WITH

LEMON, BABY

ARTICHOKES AND

ASPARAGUS

INGREDIENTS

12 ounces uncooked pappardelle (wide ribbon pasta) • 2 1/4 cups cold water, divided 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice (about 2 lemons) • 24 baby artichokes (about 2 pounds) 3 tablespoons extravirgin olive oil, divided 1 pound asparagus, trimmed and cut diagonally into (1-inch) pieces 2 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley • 1 tablespoon grated lemon rind 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1 1/4 cups (5 ounces) grated fresh Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese PREPARATION

Cook pasta according to package directions, omitting salt and fat. Drain pasta, reserving 1/2 cup cooking liquid. Set pasta aside; keep warm. Combine 2 cups water and juice in a medium bowl. Working with 1 artichoke at a time, cut off stem to within 1/4-inch from the base; peel stem. Remove bottom leaves and tough outer leaves, leaving tender heart and bottom; trim about 1 inch from top of artichoke. Cut each artichoke in half lengthwise. Place artichoke halves in lemon water. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain artichokes well; pat dry. Add artichokes to pan. Cover and cook 8 minutes, stirring occasionally; uncover. Increase heat to medium-high; cook 2 minutes or until artichokes are golden, stirring frequently. Place artichokes in a large bowl. Place pan over medium heat; add remaining 1/4 cup water and asparagus to pan. Cover and cook 5 minutes or until crisp-tender. Add asparagus, parsley, and rind to artichokes; toss well. Add pasta, reserved cooking liquid, the remaining 2 tablespoons oil, thyme, salt, and pepper to artichoke mixture; toss well. Place 2 cups pasta mixture into each of 6 shallow bowls; top each serving with about 3 tablespoons cheese. Photo: Randy Mayor; Styling: Melanie J. With classic Beatles jamming in the background and the whirr of an espresso machine, anyone looking for a great family oriented and cozy breakfast and lunch spot will not be disappointed.   Owner and Chef, Gary always dreamt of opening his own restaurant after a long career working as a chef for both the Monarchs and the Sacramento Kings. When him and his wife found The Black Rooster, they took a chance and never looked back. Included in his eclectic menu is a wide range of café lunch favorites, BBQ recipes, southern Cajun food, and not to mention to-die-for gelato from the Bay Area’s Café Classico. On Mondays you can expect an amazing soup of red beans and rice alongside a variety of other specials.   As a culinary connoisseur, Gary takes great pride in his entire restaurant and recommends everything The Black Rooster has to offer. Between shopping local farmers markets and experimenting with complex flavors, you can count on the Black Rooster to satisfy any appetite. And as for the future, you can expect to see more BBQ and more comfort food. Sounds like heaven.

FINAL THOUGHT SHOWER SOURS

SHOWERSours BY EMILY VERBECK

BRIDAL SHOWERS AND BABY SHOWERS

Here comes new life, new commitments, and endless registries for lucky brides and mothers to be. Whether you are welcoming a new addition to your family or you’re about to tie the knot, you’re bound to be planning or attending a Bridal or Baby shower in the months to come. Between picking the right gifts and getting the games right, everyone has their role to play in the shuffle of April showers. It all just takes a bit of inspiration and a whole lot of patience.

MOTHER OF THE BRIDE

While your daughter is likely bursting at the seams with last minute details, you have received the honor of planning a bridal shower. While you may think it’s a cinch, appeasing your little diva while keeping the family happy is feat to be admired. Remember to temper family obligations with friendship expectations, and don’t skimp on the party activities. Nothing is worse for a stressed bride than awkward silence and female relatives judging her Crate and Barrel wish list.

MOTHER OF THE GROOM

While the MOB is busy with getting the details right for her bride-to-be, the Mother of the Groom may feel a bit overlooked. Rather than assuming that as MOG you’ll be left out in the cold, proper etiquette is to always offer a helping hand, even if you’re less than please with son’s marital choice. Push back the disapproval and feelings of being an outsider and opt for chipping in however you can. Also, don’t forget to smile; there will be pictures.

72

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | APRIL 2014

BRIDESMAIDS

While being asked to be a bridesmaid is an honor many women love, don’t forget that it’s also a duty to the happy couple. Never assume you are along for the ride. As a bridesmaid it is your wedding job to plan anything and everything necessary. No bride wants to throw her own Bridal Shower. So from now until the day your friend enters matrimonial bliss, pull up your big girl panties and plan your heart out. Also, keep in mind you need not ever distract from the bride. Yes, it is still a faux pas to wear white if the bride is as well, even at a shower.

GRANDMA-TO-BE

In any given baby shower, there are generally two grandmas to be. While it may be ever so tempting to begin quarreling over which grandma gets to do what, remember that the stress of welcoming this bundle of joy should be diminished, not encouraged by your presence. You have the rest of your lives to judge how your children raise their children.

CO-ED

Rumor has that gendered Bridal and Baby showers are a thing of the past. Whether this be true or not, in the face of a bridal shower, try not to invite anyone whom the bride would not like seeing her open unmentionables. While this endeavor is generally one for the females of any family, there is no rule of etiquette that the father to be and male relatives must be excluded.
