BI DESIGN

Studio BY ALYSSA SEVERIN

PHOTO: MATTY FRAN

BI Design Studio in El Dorado Hills isn’t just a home for pretty things (although it definitely is that, too). It’s the culmination of several love-stories woven together and years of hard-work and passion colliding under one roof.    Owners Craig and Alex Badolian, who met, fell in love, and got married while at the Florence Design Academy in Florence Italy, understand that what they do is so much more than remodeling, so much more than designing—it’s who they are. Craig couldn’t have escaped the world of design if he tried—his father is the founder of Carpeteria, exposing Craig to everything from flooring to business to bookkeeping before he could even drive a car. LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014

17

LAVISH ON LOCALS

Alex grew up in Italy, had a degree in Fine Arts, and was pursuing graphic design by the time Craig came around. “Our first date was to the largest stone and tile show in the world—in Verona, Italy!” Alex recalled. “When we go to shows and trade shows now, I realize the amount of respect [Craig’s father] has. In this industry, everyone has been trained by him or worked with him,” Alex said.    Serving as a showroom and fullservice business, BI Design takes every part of your remodeling fantasy and turns it into reality. Craig’s background, along with his studies in architecture and interior design, create a really unique experience for the future client. “Our showroom is specialized in flooring and kitchen/bath remodels. There’s handcrafted tiles, custom hardwood floors, area rugs, window coverings, even vacuums and appliances,” Craig said. “Our product line is what amazes me; we have the kind of materials that are only found in the most exclusive design studios in the world, like Beverly Hills and New York.”    As a kid, Craig didn’t dream about getting a new bike for Christmas. Instead, his young imaginative mind dreamt up one-of-a-kind flooring products. And now, he’s been able to design those unique, hardwood floors and share them with his customers. “Flooring just runs through my veins. I’d imagine these things and now.... now I have them. It’s so cool!” Craig said. Heavily focused on the designside of remodeling, rather than just the technical-side, the BI studio zeros-in on the smallest of details because they know it makes a world of difference. “When I met Craig, he’d talk about

what we were going to do with our showroom. He had a feeling they would go aggressively towards design, and this was 10 years ago. Now, this couldn’t be more true. We wanted to offer our clients this experience—every single thing they’re getting should be beautiful,” Alex said. And no pun intended, Craig added, “We definitely roll out the red carpet for our customers!” The way the Badolians accomplish this is simple: they offer maximum service for maximum results. Craig stays in communication with the general contractors, specifying everything from flooring to backsplash to color to reflective ceiling plans, all the way down to knobs on counter doors and toilet-paper holders. “We specify absolutely everything that goes into the project. Absolutely everything. It’s a long process, but once we’re there, we execute quite a bit of it ourselves,” Craig said.    When BI Design Studio opened in 2009, right at the height of the economy crash, Craig believes this extreme attention to detail is what got them through. “Everyone thought we were crazy, even my Dad,” Craig said. Alex joined, saying, “Even our clients! Even the customers who already knew us thought we were crazy.”    Despite all odds, however, BI Design claimed their territory and made their mark. They’ve expanded their space every year for the last four years, starting from 1,500 sq. feet and now resting and 5,000 sq. feet. “Being fullservice makes us appealing, but it also holds us accountable. We can’t do it all, but we certainly have enjoyed that part of the business,” Craig said. More than anything, BI Design Studio loves seeing their clients’ reach ultimate satisfaction. “It’s rewarding watching them get what they truly wanted, watching the ideas on their wish-lists get check-marked,” Alex said.    Both Craig and Alex know construction can be challenging and messy, and sometimes the smallest of things can bring heartache. But because their passion is so intricately wound up in who they are, they consequently know that having too much passion is a much better problem than not having enough. “When things get hard, we remember that our clients are our friends. And

18

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014

that’s amazing,” Alex said. “We love this community. We’ve made so many relationships, and it’s just been awesome,” Craig said. Concluding, Alex remarked, “The people just care a lot. As a foreigner, I’ve always admired the dedication that Americans have. El Dorado Hills is no exception...people truly, truly care about their community. We are so proud to be here,” she said.

As we launch into the New Year, one thing is certain: 2014 will be an interesting year for the U.S. real estate industry. The California Association of Realtors predicts that sales will bounce back this year as housing prices continue to grow. The increase in home prices will, in turn, encourage more homeowners to put their home on the market. The housing supply will grow and gradually climb back from under 3 months supply of inventory to about 4 months. 5.4 percent more households moved in 2013 than the year before, and 54 percent people in the Western U.S. say they are more comfortable purchasing a house today than any other time in the past 5 years. This is higher than any other region in the U.S.

LAVISH ON LOCALS

So, why are people moving? “My experience is they want a newer and better home, more energy efficiency, a better neighborhood or an easier commute,” says local real estate guru Debi Ambroff. The good news for 2014 is that there should be far less competition for homebuyers from investors/ investment firms. “The investors tend to swoop in when markets bottom out and then withdraw as prices rise, especially in cities or areas like ours where prices have been rising steadily.” Investors want a good return on their money and it becomes 26

more of a challenge as the prices move up. House flipping has declined substantially over the last year, as well. This will make it much more attractive for buyers entering into the market for the first time, as there is more inventory to choose from. Although the mortgage trend for 2014 is upward over 5%, it will not halt the buyers from entering the market in desirable locations like El Dorado County and its surrounding areas.    Buyers are in search of a new lifestyle, a fresh new look and ambiance in housing, but want

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014

to keep more of their hard earned money for retirement. “The local climate is now perfect for moving in a new direction, says Ambroff. “We have new custom lots with construction financing available, new custom home starts in all of our custom home communities and production homebuilders in Master Planned communities that have attractive incentives to offer new homebuyers.”   According to Ambroff, Blackstone Master Planned Community is one of those who have

done it right. Sprawled over 350 acres located just off Latrobe Road in El Dorado Hills; it is a leader in the solar programs selling energy efficient housing. There you will find leading homebuilders Lennar, Standard Pacific, and Meritage. The community has an array of amenities that include a pool, spa, clubhouse, fitness center and a new elementary school nearing completion, plus it’s just a short drive to Town Center, and Hwy 50 as well.    As 2014 comes into full swing, watch for even

more exciting real estate happenings to gain momentum in the Sacramento area. The California Association of Relators projects home sales to reach 430,300 units in California this year, and rise 3.2 percent next year to reach 444,000 units. The median price of a California home will also increase, according to the forecast: 28 percent this year over last year to $408,600, and then another 6 percent in 2014 to $432,800. Cheers!

LOVE BLOOD for

BY LACY EDNEY

It’s a new year, and I’m sure you have made a few New Years Resolutions like going to the gym, learning a new language or losing the holiday weight, but what if I could offer you something with instant gratification? Need an instant lift or a meaningful way to get involved and make a difference? What better way to start a new year, than to donate blood? You are helping others by giving of yourself in a real and tangible way. During the holidays, it’s easy to get caught up in the festivities, but now that January, national blood donor month, has set in, it’s a great time to plan ahead and help our community make provisions for the year ahead.   Blood donation is relevant and very needed. According to the Red Cross, every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. By donating blood you are enlivening others and helping them to start the New Year right. More than 41,000 blood donations are needed every day, and the Red Cross provides for 40% of the blood needed in America.    Donating is an easy way to contribute that makes your feel great. It’s a natural self-esteem boost, plus you can enjoy free refreshments. Blood is something that you have enough to share with people who really appreciate it. A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood. Your donation could be one of the pints that they desperately need. You could be someone’s hero!    Donate blood today! The Red Cross in the Sacramento area has recently gained the privilege of facilitating blood donation in the area with the help of their subsidiary Delta Blood Bank. A donation of one pint only takes about 8-10 minutes. Delta Blood Bank (also know as Marshall Community Blood Center) has two perma-

28

nent locations. One is located in Cameron Park (open Fridays 11:00am5:00pm) and the other in Placerville (open Thursdays 11:00am-5:00pm.)   Have your company host a blood drive to make this opportunity more accessible to your community. Hosting a blood drive is a proactive method to energize and care for the community by providing a convenient way for others to give back. Be the change you wish to see in the world! All you have to do is offer a suitable location, help recruit donors, publicize the drive and schedule appointments; the Red Cross will take care of the rest! To make an appointment to donate blood or host a blood drive, call Susanne Brown directly at (209) 932-8145 or call 1-800244-6794 ext 301. So why not take a few minutes to make a difference today? Your quick contribution could have an incredible effect on someones life.

LOL

Q&A

With Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Terry J. Zimmerman, M.D., F.A.C.S

Q:

Q:

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE WHAT IS THE OF FAT CELLS IN OUR BEST TYPE OF BODY? LIPOSUCTION?

A: Think of fat cells primarily as storage areas to hold the excess calories we consume in our diet that are not used during exercising and normal activities. We all have fat cells, but carry them differently according to our genetic make-up. Some carry more fat cells in their thighs, or others in their abdomen, etc.

Q:

IS LIPOSUCTION SAFE? A: When performed properly, by a qualified

plastic surgeon, liposuction can be very safe and effective to remove unwanted fat from areas of accumulation, which then alters the distribution of fat in the body and ‘sculpts’ the physique in a more desirable shape.

Q:

DOESN’T THE FAT COME RIGHT BACK AFTER LIPOSUCTION?

A: The excess fat cells are removed permanently following liposuction. If one maintains a good diet with adequate exercise the ‘fat’ does not come back. If one however gains weight and consumes more calories than the body needs, the body will look for available fat cells in which to store the unused calories. Not all of the fat cells are removed from an area after liposuction so one will see some re-occurrence of the ‘fat’ in that area, but will also notice increased gain in areas that were not treated where fat cells still exist.

30

A: There are many types of liposuction being offered today (Tumescent Liposuction, Ultrasonic Liposuction, Power Assisted Liposuction, Water Jet Liposuction, Laser Liposuction, etc.). If there was one best technique all surgeons would all be using it. They are all effective, and are various ways of loosening and removing fat cells. Some techniques may be more effective than others in certain areas of the body, and most surgeons will use a technique that they find give them a good and consistant result.

Q:

WHAT TYPE OF COMPLICATIONS CAN OCCUR WITH LIPOSUCTION? A:

Liposuction, while often portrayed as minor surgery, can have some very serious and permanent consequences and should only be performed by qualified surgeons well trained in the technique and the anatomy, and in certified operating facilities. Bowel perforations, lethal infections, death of the overlying skin, permanent scars and disfigurement, excessive blood loss, and anesthetic deaths have all occurred following liposuction. A patient must do their homework and research their surgeon first, especially if the procedure is being performed in a private office or clinic. Do not be misled by excessive advertising or unrealistic claims.

Resolution BY KELLY SODERLUND

REVOL

UTION The end of the holiday festivities and the start of a new year always seem to trigger the desire to (finally) get back in shape. Fitness fads gain traction, then like all trends to do, inevitably lose their ability to keep your interest quicker than you can lose the weight. Hot fitness trends for 2014 include high-intensity interval training -- think CrossFit and P90X -- and body-weight training, such as push-ups, pull-ups and planks. In addition, yoga is expected to get even bigger, and those looking to shed pounds are often turning to physician-assisted weight loss to accomplish their goals. The American College of Sports Medicine recently released its survey of the Top 20 global fitness trends destined to be huge next year. But you won’t find spinning,

kickboxing, barefoot running, or stabilityball workouts on the list. The survey included more than 3,815 fitness professionals around the globe who were asked to pick their predictions for 2014 fitness trends. The findings show high-intensity interval training -- which involves working out as hard as you can for a short burst of time, followed by a short, less-intense period -- is destined to be all the rage next year. To ensure that our fitness knowledge stays in tip-top shape, we asked several local fitness professionals-whose area of expertise will be trending in 2014 -- why those looking to shape up in the New Year should choose their discipline. Here’s what we discovered:

yoga

EXPERT: KIM VANACORE Radiant Yoga | RadiantYogaEDH.com WHY WILL YOGA BE HUGE IN 2014? I don’t feel yoga is a trend at all. It is more of a lifestyle. I do see certain types of yoga becoming more popular. For example, more of our students are requesting Yin [a form in which practitioners passively hold poses for an extended time] because it’s the perfect balance to Power Vinyasa. Yin really gets into the deep connective tissues and increases flexibility. LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014

47

WHY SHOULD THOSE LOOKING TO CRAFT A NEW BODY IN THE NEW YEAR CHOOSE YOUR STUDIO? While most heated yoga studios use forced air to heat their rooms, Radiant Yoga uses FAR infrared heat, which provides a detoxifying form of heat, which expels toxins and burns calories. FAR infrared heat promotes a stronger immune system, better cardiovascular health, and speeds up the healing process in soft tissue injuries. As a beauty treatment, the penetrating heat of FAR infrared heat therapy reduces the appearance of crow’s feet, fine lines, and wrinkles. HOW CAN PEOPLE AVOID NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION BURNOUT? Set realistic goals and do what you enjoy so it’s not a chore. I really love practicing yoga so I’m always consistent. Yoga also encourages you to take care of yourself by listening to your body. If I allow myself adequate rest I never get burned out.

personal training EXPERT: DAVID YOUNG Transform Fitness Roseville TransformFitnessRoseville.com

48

CAN YOU PROVIDE A FEW SAMPLE POSES THAT YOU FEEL ARE THE MOST EFFECTIVE? Warrior poses are great for leg strength; plank is excellent for core; and Chaturanga’s (low push-ups) support upper body strength. WHY SHOULD READERS CHOOSE RADIANT YOGA? Yoga is good for everyone for many different reasons. Yoga is not only an excellent form of fitness and detoxification, but it also connects our mind, body and spirit. I feel this is the reason people keep coming back. It’s truly transformational. You just simply have to try our studio and you’ll be hooked. ANY SPECIALS OR SPECIAL PROGRAMS GEARED TOWARDS THE NEW YEAR? Yes, we are offering a weeklong Group Detox Program with Stacy Whittingham from 1/12 - 1/19. It will be a transformational week of cleansing designed to promote wellness and awakening of mind/body/spirit.

WHAT TRENDS DO YOU ANTICIPATE YOUR CLIENTS REQUESTING IN THE NEW YEAR? Some fitness trends that will be big for the New Year are CrossFit workouts and H.I.I.T (High Intensity Interval) Training. Both can be effective in one’s efforts to reach their fitness and body fat loss goals, but for the average individual who hasn’t been working out consistently at a high level, they can be too rigorous which can potentially increase the risk of injury. Lately people want to feel like they are getting “tortured to the point of exhaustion!” One client said, “I want you to kill me!” This can be irresponsible. I feel that for the vast majority of the population, a high intensity program shouldn’t be considered until an appropriate introduction to exercise is taught and proper conditioning regarding muscle/ body control is shown. Clients need to be assessed verbally and physically before a trainer should be able to put them on any workout plan.

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014

WHAT SETS TRANSFORM FITNESS APART FROM OTHER PERSONAL TRAINERS? What makes us unique is taking the goals of our clients to heart, truly giving them every tool they need to be successful in their journey, and holding them accountable once they have those tools. The 3600 sq. ft. private training studio provides a non-crowded and unintimidating atmosphere.

We have also been voted Best Personal Trainers for 2012 and 2013 on KCRA’s A-List and are highly rated on Yelp. HOW CAN PEOPLE AVOID NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION BURNOUT? I would recommend NOT making one! Commit to changing for good, regardless of any event or deadline. To achieve serious results and a true lifestyle change, your goals can’t depend on the

start of the year. You have to be truly ready to make the necessary changes with food planning, exercise, being accountable, resisting outside temptation and saboteurs, etc. Most people will not be in your corner to help you succeed. CAN YOU PROVIDE A FEW SAMPLE MOVES THAT YOU FEEL ARE THE MOST EFFECTIVE? Everybody seems to be fascinated with squats lately, but I feel that

for building and shaping the rear end, lunges do wonders. Clients should first position themselves in a split stance, slightly leaning forward from the upper body to reduce potential stress in the lower back. Then tighten the butt on the side of the lead leg and try to maintain tightness as you lower your body toward the ground. To ensure that the knees are safe, push through the heel of the affected foot. Pushing through the toes typically puts a great deal of stress in the knee and

on the front thigh. A Med Ball/ Dumbell Woodchop is an effective exercise for reducing the love handles and to increase balance and overall body control. Take a slightly split stance starting with the ball or dumbbell at the hip on one side of the body. In a fairly quick manner, with the arms extended, swing the ball or dumbbell diagonally upward across your body. The med ball or dumbbell should be slowly lowered back down to starting position. You should be concentrating mentally

on pulling with your midsection and not with your arms. ANY SPECIALS OR SPECIAL PROGRAMS GEARED TOWARDS THE NEW YEAR? Transform Fitness Personal Training is offering FREE one-onone consultations for the New Year!

cross-fit EXPERT: JEFF PRESCOTT El Dorado Hills | CrossFit ElDoradoHillsCrossFit.com

WHY IS CROSSFIT GOING TO TAKE OVER THE FITNESS WORLD IN 2014? There are always a bunch of new fitness trends that come and go each year. CrossFit is only growing. Obviously I’m biased, but we are made to be moving, so whatever gets you motivated to get a sweat going is only going to make you a healthier person. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE CROSSFIT TO READERS? The list of movements we do in CrossFit is very extensive: to sum it up we do a mixture of Olympic Weight lifting, Running, Rowing, Jumping, and many other gymnastics moves. WHY SHOULD SOMEONE TRY CROSSFIT AT YOUR GYM? CrossFit is an amazing way to get really fit really fast. We practice movements that emulate real life activities, but at a faster pace with or without weight. We program all of the workouts and there is always a certified coach watching you and making sure that you are doing all of the movements correctly. You will rarely, if ever do the same workout twice, this way your body doesn’t adapt, and you will be constantly getting results. It’s not surprising for someone to lose 10-15 lbs. just in their free 30-day trial. HOW CAN PEOPLE AVOID NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION BURNOUT? New Years burnout can be avoided by finding a friend or a group of friends that you enjoy working out with and that will keep you accountable. Also variety in your workouts will help keep you from getting bored. Setting small milestones to attain goals is always a great way to start! ANY SPECIALS OR SPECIAL PROGRAMS GEARED TOWARDS THE NEW YEAR? As always the first month is free at El Dorado Hills CrossFit, this gives everyone a great chance to see if CrossFit is a good fit for them. We don’t want a bunch of members that don’t work out, we want as many members to come in a day as we can, it just adds to the vibe. LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014

Winter BY KELLY SODERLUND

WINDOWLAND WINDOW COVERINGS… SO LITTLE TIME, SO MANY CHOICES.

Whether you’re moving into a new home or giving an older home a face-lift, important decisions have to be made on selecting
new window coverings. However, there’s catch-22 when selecting window coverings: most window covering sales people are not interior designers, and
most designers have limited knowledge of window coverings. With the help of Sherrie Swass of Swass Interior Design, we’ve compiled a list of ideas to be aware of before you take the big step:

54

LOOK AT WHERE YOUR WINDOWS ARE PLACED

Do the windows expose a beautiful
back yard… or do you view a 3’x12’ dog run? If you look out onto a beautiful back yard, you
want your window coverings to enhance your view by making your eyes look out
beyond the window. Therefore whatever the window covering is, it needs to be functional yet
also muted in such a way that it does not attract attention. If your back yard is a
dog run you might select something colorful so your eyes stay within the confines of the
given room.

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014

BE AWARE OF WALL SPACE

Is there plenty of wall space on all sides of the windows to stack back the window
coverings so your windows will be totally exposed when the coverings are fully opened? This can definitely alter your decision-making.

for hard and soft window coverings. Window covering professionals can give you the information on all products. There are charts and
formulas for all products with concern to stacking. This is also an extreme issue with newer
homes that seem to have wallto-wall windows.

CONSIDER CEILING HEIGHT

SELECTION OF WINDOW COVERINGS

How much room is available above the window to mount a head rail if it is considered
an OB installation (outside
window installation)? How much room do you have to install an IB installation (inside window installation)? Both installations have issues. A knowledgeable window-covering specialist will discuss pros and cons concerning
your particular needs. This isn’t a “one right way” design situation.

HARD VS. SOFT

Do you know the difference between hard and soft window coverings? If not, make sure you set aside some time to research.

BE SURE TO STACK UP

Do you understand the stacking concept? Stacking applies to and concerns both horizontal and vertical window coverings. Stacking is also pertinent

The selection of window coverings can, unfortunately, be extremely confusing. There is a practical side to the
products, such as sun control and privacy, and an aesthetic side, which is the designer side. “There is a fine line between what looks the best versus what is practical. Since I am a professional designer
with over 25 years of window covering experience I struggle with these issues on a daily basis. Bottom line: you will live in the home. You need to know the pros and cons of all products and how they affect your everyday
living,” says Swass.   Unless you start planning your home furnishing selection months in advance, most people
do not give their window covering selection too much thought. “My recommendation to most
homeowners is to plan ahead on all phases of selection. Ask for professional advice,” recommends Swass. Most
design professionals offer a paid by hour consultation. Swass Interior

Design offers a two-hour consultation
that creates a design plan that can be used for years, without an obligation to purchase
product.    If you do not have time to do your
homework prior to selection, Swass suggests installing temporary paper shades in your windows until you
have the time to make good buying decisions. “I know this is not an attractive thought but
I continuously walk into homes that have made poor window covering decisions. Sometimes
the poor decision can be saved by adding to the existing window covering treatment and
other times it is just too late.” One example of a poor decision, according to Swass, is the ever-popular shutter. While shutters look great from the outside, from a designer’s point
of view installed shutters are very flat and cold looking on the interior in most circumstances. Get to know the difference and where to place them. Once shutters are installed it becomes
very difficult to add any soft treatment to create ambiance in the room if you open your
shutters on a regular basis.    There is also a real emphasis on garden living these days. Most people find it relaxing and
necessary to totally expose the windows so that the natural environment comes into the home
and becomes part of the interior. Frank Lloyd Wright discovered this years ago. We no longer have to
drive excess miles to enjoy what some of us share in our front or back yards.

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014

Perhaps the most important factor to remember is the size and placement of your windows. This is especially true in the back of the home where most of the actual entertaining takes place. Many homes have several sized windows in the same room. “I try to make the windows look the same size. If there is a sliding glass
door and a short window side by side, I will make both window coverings extend to the floor. Again, this is an interior design solution to a poorly designed area. Your window coverings
usually create a background for your entire room setting,” says Swass.    When looking for ideas, often people will look at magazines or the Internet. “Remember,” cautions Swass, “they
are selling window coverings, not necessarily good design. It is not their job to determine
what is best for you as an overall look and how it connects to your home.” It is not good design to install a vertical product and a horizontal product side by side, yet one
sees it all the time by window covering manufacturers because it is a practical
and an easy concept to sell.    In most new home plans, a combination of hard and soft window coverings suits most situations very well. Swass personally promotes a window covering product that very few people
know about: woven wooden draperies, which stacks back to small spaces, is available in several wood styles and

choose from, looks finished by itself and best of all, are very affordable.    There is a lot of thought process that goes into choosing the right window
coverings for your home (probably more than you imagined!). Most people do not replace window coverings on a regular basis, so it’s essential to make a sound buying decision. In the end, the result just depends on how much energy you choose to spend on
your home furnishing decisions and how connected you are to your space. Remember, balanced interiors do not cost more-- they just feel better.

Oahu Vibrant Soul of Hawaii

The Hawaiian Islands continue to be at the top of many folk’s wish list for a vacation and each island offers totally unique and different reasons to visit.

60

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014

Oahu, the most populous island, provides a very inimitable diversity not found on the other islands and is often referred to as “The Gathering Place”. For years we’ve recommended visiting Oahu first before heading off to other islands. It may not end up being your favorite island but when considering the breadth of things you can do and see it truly stands alone. No other island provides visitors such contrasting settings that should provide something to pique the interest of everyone in your vacationing party. Consider these: a modern cosmopolitan big city like Honolulu poles apart from nearby quaint fishing towns; a dynamic activity filled beach area like Waikiki in sharp dissimilarity to many other quiet secluded beaches around the island; the diverse fusion of eastern and western cultures; the native Hawaiian traditions surviving comfortably with our American heritage; and the ultimate contrast- bountiful natural pristine beauty within minutes of tragic memory filled World War ll sites.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO: Naturally on all the islands there are many similar things to see and do, such as a multitude of water activities, golf courses, botanical gardens, air and boat adventures to name a few. But for this article we want to concentrate on those things that are really unique to Oahu. Let’s start with touring Iolani Palace, the largest, most ornate and one of only two legitimate royal palaces on American soil. (The other much smaller palace, Hulihee, is on the Big Island). The original Hawaiian monarchs were considered royalty by all reigning sovereigns of the world and were invited to most other nation’s regal gatherings throughout the globe for many years until the monarchy ended; www.iolanipalace.com. Attend a free weekly concert by the incredible Royal Hawaiian Band on the grounds of the palace, weather permitting. This great band has been playing concerts

continuously since 1836, is America’s oldest concert band and only fulltime municipal band in the U.S. The concert we attended was first rate and they performed over 350 concerts last year alone. www.rhbmusic.com Tour many of the sites at Kualoa Ranch, once the residence of kings, on the northeast shore. Jurassic Park, Lost and other famous movies and television shows were filmed there. www. kualoa.com. Visiting Pearl Harbor and the ghostly U.S.S. Arizona memorial is a must. But maybe equally important is to tour the U.S.S. Missouri, the battleship where the peace treaty with Japan was signed to end World War II. Even after three visits over the years, both remain amazingly nostalgic experiences for us as veterans! www.pearlharboroahu.

The Aulani Resort & Spa, just north of Waikiki in Ko Olina, is a family utopia with the everlasting Disney touches of adventure and magic with one of Hawaii’s most spectacular pool layouts. Although basically a timeshare property, the resort still offers special packages and accommodation options for nonowners that just may lead you to eventually consider joining the Disney Vacation Club. www.resorts.disney. go.com/Aulani More Recommended Dining Options: The Chief’s Luau, rated number one by Trip Advisor, and this accolade is not surprising. Their pre-show positive interaction with attendees (especially kids), the show itself, friendly service, quality Hawaiian food presentations and Sea Life Park setting all add up to a winner. www.chiefsluau.com; Looking for a local’s fave? Dine under the dome at Bistro 33 El Dorado Hills BY HEATHER REAGAN

Located in the majestic dome in the El Dorado Hills Town Center, Bistro 33 El Dorado Hills captures the charm that its sister restaurants before it have brought to their respective locations. This cozy eatery is a distinctive experience typical of the El Dorado style and ambiance. Simulating a traditional downtown feel where people gather, work, stroll along broad sidewalks, shop, and dine, The Town Center is perched on an east hill where Bistro 33’s patio faces the amphitheater and lake, and as aforementioned, located under a dome. Bistro 33’s style is trendy and hip with warm hues, natural wood, and intricate detail in stair rails and lighting tresses. Lined with stylish booths, the atmosphere is bright, lively, and modern delivering ample seating- both indoors and outdoors.

We’re strict about what we want.” Not allowing any deviation from his recipes can sometimes detour young chefs looking to make a name for themselves. Offering instead, hands on mentoring and tutorship, a far more valuable trade-off.    Bistro 33 El Dorado Hills utilizes the freshest produce, meats, and cheeses from the nearby farms in the California region to come up with delectable dishes. Additionally, guests can select from some of the best wines Washington and Oregon offer as well as a respectable selection of California favorites. Their modest service and innovative Pacific Northwest inspired food philosophy has cultivated a loyal following of neighborhood diners and bar-goers. The Haines brothers feel strongly that creating the right environment is essential in delivering a successful dining experience.   Signature food favorites include Criss Cut Fries with Gorgonzola Relish Cream and Blistered Shishiot Peppers with Olive Oil and Sea Salt from their Small Plate Menu. The Skuna Bay Salmon is a Vancouver Island Craft Raised salmon with a succulent presentation de jour. Of course, menu staples include famous burgers and Panini’s; and perhaps, their most enticing menu is their Happy Hour Menu, available Monday through Friday from 3-6pm, offering $4 eats and some praiseworthy beers, wines and cocktails from $4-$8. Go for Happy Hour, stay for critically acclaimed cuisine and service. Bistro 33 also boasts a Banquet and Event Center that is an ingeniously designed space for weddings, meetings, and special events. Bistro 33 El Dorado Hills is a destination dining gem for everyone.

The bar area is classy and casual. Cool fire pits, a gorgeous lake, a beautiful fountain, and 130 year old olive trees provide an enchanting dining backdrop. Bistro 33 El Dorado Hills opened in 2007, and is a Standing Room Only Inc. restaurant modeled after the same great cuisine and trendy design as their other locations, which include 33rd Street Bistro in East Sacramento, Bistro 33 in Davis, City Hall Tavern in Davis, Riverside Clubhouse in Old Land Park, and Suzie Burger in Midtown Sacramento. As proprietors, brothers Fred ( Executive Chef & President) & Matt Haines (General Manager & Vice President) tell the story, SRO Inc. got its name after they opened 33rd Street Bistro in 1996 and received a flawless review which headlined that the bistro had “Standing Room Only” because it was an instant hit with customers. From there, Standing Room Only Inc. Family of Fine Restaurants was born with the concept of approachable food in comfortable settings.   After spending many years in the Seattle and Portland areas, Executive Chef Fred Haines returned to his native home Sacramento where he opened the 33rd Street Bistro in 1995. To Haines, it seemed peculiar that there 68

weren’t many restaurants in the Sacramento area capitalizing on the Pacific Northwest Region’s delightful ingredients and first-rate wine. “It was a natural way to carve out a niche with bold flavors and interesting flavor combinations other than typical California food,” said Haines. This departure from usual California cuisine earned 33rd Street Bistro thirteen different awards within their first year, and opened the door for successful expansion. With this appreciation of Washington and Oregon foods, Haines has put together menus for all of his locations featuring fresh ingredients, kind portions, and vibrant presentations that capture the wholesome flavors of the Pacific Northwest. Chef Haines is not new to the culinary scene. One of the hardest working chefs in this region, Haines never stops training to become a better chef. He has worked with the French Laundry’s Thomas Keller, Chef Mark Miller, Chef Katharine Bandel of Chez Panisse, Chef Jon Lovie Pardon of Napa Restaurant Las Vegas and Chef Daniel Boulud of Daniel’s in New York. Today, Chef Haines has earned the reputation of one of this area’s premier chefs. The status isn’t something that Chef Haines takes lightly for his family of fine restaurants.

WINE PICKS | SIERRA FOOTHILLS

C A L F O O TH ILL WIN E S THIS MONTH'S PICK FROM LOCAL SIERRA FOOTHILL WINERIES.

TERRA D' ORO WINERY

Translated as “Land of Gold,” Terra d’Oro Winery collects its mother lode in the form of flawless grapes.

Established in 1970, and formerly known as Montevina Winery, Terra d’Oro was Amador County’s first post-prohibition winery. Today, Terra d’ Oro is Amador county’s largest and most modern winery. Zinfandel is their true passion, which is what they do best. They released their first wines in 1973 under the Montevina label, which quickly earned a reputation for crafting robust, full-flavored red winesZinfandel and Barbera in particular. Today Terra d’ Oro winery produces self-proclaimed “uncommonly delicious Zinfandel”, Barbera, Sangiovese, Syrah, Pinot Grigio, and Moscato. They farm over 400 acres of estate vines including several historic, old-vine vineyards.   Amador County has been the home to superior Zinfandel for over a century. Zinfandel came to Amador County via wagons of Italian immigrants during the California Gold Rush. The Mother Lode (Mother Lode is most famously the name given to the long alignment of hard-rock gold deposits stretching northwest to southeast in the Sierra Nevada of California.) was rich with gold and crawling with eager pioneers. After the boom, Amador’s population numbers collapsed and many of Amador’s Zinfandel vineyards were replaced with prune and walnut orchards. There was enough demand for Zinfandel that some of the original vineyards remain today.   In addition to producing top-notch Zinfandels, Terra d’Oro finds it difficult to ignore its Italian roots, mainly because 70

Italian varietals make such food-friendly wines. The climate, elevation, and rich, rocky soil allows traditional Italian varietals to not simply thrive here, but actually achieve true greatness. Many early Italian settlers recognized this and widely planted vineyards with the grapes that they knew best. Terra d’Oro is fortunate that two of Italy’s most revered red winesTuscany’s Sangiovese, and Piedmonte’s Barbera thrive in the rocky, iron-rich soils of Amador County. These grapes develop into lush, well-balanced wines appropriate for aging or immediate consumption. The Amador County Rosé, made from Nebbiolo grapes, presents a wonderful, off-dry style preferred by Europeans for centuries. Terra d’Oro also calls on judiciously selected vineyards throughout California for its Moscato, and focuses on Santa Barbara for its Pinot Grigio, resulting in crisp, vibrant, easy-drinking white wines.    Chris Leamy, Terra d’ Oro’s winemaker has been with the winery since 2000 when he joined the team as an Assistant Winemaker to Jeff Meyers. Chris is deeply committed to and passionate about Amador County as a premier California growing region. He brings unique skill and unwavering commitment to his role. Chris confesses that he “spends his free time looking for a hobby that is half as much fun as his job.” Jeff Meyers is now Terra d’ Oro’s Vice President and General Manager overseeing all aspects of the winery, including winemaking, viticulture,

retail, and visitor operations. Jeff has an unprecedented talent for producing Amador County wines that showcase the region’s robust fruit in an understated, approachable style. Meyers’ ultimate goal is to make rich, full-flavored reds ready to be enjoyed now, but still able to age and develop gracefully in the cellar for up to ten years. Terra d’Oro winery utilizes sustainable farming practices and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in most of their vineyards. For over three decades, Terra d’Oro has been a pioneer in the development of superior Zinfandel with Meyers at the helm.

Terra d’Oro wines are distributed nationally, and sold direct through the tasting room, a wine club, and online sales. They indisputably craft wines that are rich, full of character and intensity that perfectly captures the essence of this “Land of Gold.”

C A L L O DI W INES BERGHOLD WINERY

With wine at the center, Berghold Estate Winery offers a unique experience for visitors. BY HEATHER REAGAN

Loosely translated, the Austrian rooted name Berghold means “vineyard worker”. One could argue then that winegrape growing and winemaking was an inescapable fate for the Berghold Family, who has been growing grapes in Lodi since 1986.    A newer winery on the scene in Lodi, Berghold’s roots run deep. Their passion for history- namely American Victorian antiques and art- have put them on the map as a Northern California Winery destination. Joe and Kay Berghold are collectors at heart. Purchasing and storing antiques from the American Victorian period (18601900) for more than twenty years, the Bergholds had a specific aspiration in mind: to build an architecturally unique winery and tasting room representative of the era in the pieces of their collectionand the same era of beginning of Lodi wine history. In 2005, their dream became a reality when Joe and Kay opened their tasting room; a Northern California peak ended barn designed with Victorian antique architectural features throughout.    The main entrance to the winery showcases a duo of ten foot carved cherry doors originally belonging to a Victorian mansion in Philadelphia. The more than sixty solid wood cabriole corbels that adorn the roofline are quite grand- as in actual antique Victorian grand piano legs. The two bars in the winery- a 72

twenty-six foot carved Mahogany Eastlake bar, and a twenty-six foot Louis XIV Oak bar are massive traditional pieces. Accompanying these historic beauties are endless antiques and statues. A thirteen foot handmade gilded tower clock with gnomes keeping track of the hours by beating their drums in unison escorts a 1918 Charles Stieff concert grand piano in the center of the tasting room. Blanketing these treasures is a resplendent 1890 Chandelier from New York’s Paramount theatre. Three colossal cupolas, which appear as small buildings in their own right, sit on the crest of the winery.   The winery and the vintage collection within are concealed by 85 acres of vineyard; Syrah, Viognier, Cabernet, Merlot and Zinfandel grapes used to produce the single vineyard estate wines bearing the Berghold Vineyards label. Oh yeah, they grow grapes and make wine- award winning wine at that! Miles Berghold is the son of Joe and Kay and the winemaker at Berghold. Annually, Berghold produces only 5,000 cases of barrel aged wines. Among these fine wines, are the “Footstomp” Zinfandel, and 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, and Viognier wines. Blends of Cabernet Sauvignon/ Syrah and Cabernet Franc/Syrah are also Berghold trademarks. The grapes are handpicked and the wines are handcrafted yielding terroir driven, artisan wines. “When nature

allows,” Berghold also crafts unique estate ports and late harvest Botrytis Viognier under the “Stogie Club” label. Although they produce only 5,000 cases a year, the Berghold’s grow enough grapes for 30,000 cases of wine. They sell the surplus of their grapes to Napa and Sonoma wineries, and to wineries in Iowa and Wisconsin.   Today, Berghold Estate Winery is a family affair offering the perfect blend of fine wine and American Victorian antiques and art. As easy as it is to get caught up in the backdrop, the true focus is wine. The Bergholds are passionate about their wine. The majority of their wine is sold through the winery in their tasting room, or through their sizeable wine club. Joe Berghold wants to remain a small, boutique winery, familyrun, making hand-crafted premium wines. “This is a labor of love,” he says “Hopefully, we are building a legacy here.”

SEASON DELIGHT

SEASON DELIGHT

BY EMILY VERBECK

CRANBERRIES From chocolates and pastries to juice, the cranberry is an essential part to helping your body and taste buds survive even the harshest of winters. Perfect for breads, candies, and even a well-known holiday favorite for sauce, the pleasantly tangy taste of cranberries is an excellent addition to just about any flavor pallet. While you may be acquainted with cranberry sauce for your holiday feasts, the benefits and enjoyment of cranberries are things we prefer not to limit to the Thanksgiving and Christmas

months. The cranberry has a wide array of health benefits you may want to enjoy this flu-season. Low in calories and high in valuable components like potassium, Vitamin C and antioxidants, these powerful berries have been known to possess both anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer benefits. Because they include protection for vital organs like the kidneys, heart, and bladder, cranberries restorative effects are also offered in supplemental form. In fact, many studies indicate preventative qualities for the

seasonal cold. Its no wonder that the tart taste of cranberries is our preferred flavor this month. To seize these benefits, put the usual fruits aside and incorporate more cranberries into your cooking this season with a recipe for a delightful, and nutritious, winter treat. Sources:

PEAR AND FIELD GREEN SALAD WITH POMEGRANATE VINAIGRETTE PREP TIME:

20 minutes

INGREDIENTS

1/3 cup olive oil, 1/3 cup pomegranate juice 1 tablespoon sugar, 1 teaspoon McCormick® Cinnamon, Ground 1 teaspoon McCormick® Ginger, Ground 1/8 teaspoon Sea Salt from McCormick® Sea Salt Grinder 1 package (6 ounces) field greens, 2 ripe pears, cored and thinly sliced 1/3 cup dried cranberries, 1/3 cup toasted walnut pieces COOK TIME: 0

Your guests will be raving about this festive salad which features two favorites — pears and cranberries. It’s drizzled with a flavorful, antioxidant-rich Pomegranate Vinaigrette. PREPARATION

For the Vinaigrette, mix all ingredients in small bowl with wire whisk until well blended. Just before serving, toss greens with pears, cranberries, walnuts and blue cheese in large bowl. (Or divide among individual serving plates.) Drizzle with Pomegranate Vinaigrette. Toss lightly to serve. Recipe courtesy of McCormick®, Foodchannel.com.

CRANBERRY ORANGE SCONES INGREDIENTS

4 cups plus 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup sugar, plus additional for sprinkling 2 tablespoons baking powder 2 teaspoons kosher salt 1 tablespoon grated orange zest 3/4 pound cold unsalted butter, diced 4 extra-large eggs, lightly beaten 1 cup cold heavy cream 1 cup dried cranberries 1 egg beaten with 2 tablespoons water or milk, for egg wash 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar, plus 2 tablespoons 4 teaspoons freshly squeezed orange juice DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, mix 4 cups of flour, 1/4 cup sugar, the baking powder, salt and orange zest. Add the cold butter and mix at the lowest speed until the butter is the size of peas. Combine the eggs and heavy cream and, with the mixer on low speed, slowly pour into the flour and butter mixture. Mix until just blended. The dough will look lumpy! Combine the dried cranberries and 1/4 cup of flour, add to the dough, and mix on low speed until blended. Dump the dough onto a well-floured surface and knead it into a ball. Flour your hands and a rolling pin and roll the dough 3/4-inch thick. You should see small bits of butter in the dough. Keep moving the dough on the floured board so it doesn’t stick. Flour a 3-inch round plain or fluted cutter and cut circles of dough. Place the scones on a baking pan lined with parchment paper. Collect the scraps neatly, roll them out, and cut more circles. Brush the tops of the scones with egg wash, sprinkle with sugar, and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the tops are browned and the insides are fully baked. The scones will be firm to the touch. Allow the scones to cool for 15 minutes and then whisk together the confectioners’ sugar and orange juice, and drizzle over the scones. Recipe Courtesy Ina Garten, Foodnetwork.com

FINAL THOUGHT NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS

TIPS TO KEEPING YOUR

New Years RESOLUTIONS BY EMILY VERBECK

It’s the beginning of a brand new year, which means gallant attempts at self-improvement in the form of New Years Resolutions. Whether you are determined to ditch that bad habit, reinvent your wardrobe, or shed a few pounds, buying a gym membership and a pair of new sneakers isn’t the same as stepping up to the treadmill day after day to make your resolution a reality. To help you kick the bucket of self-indulgence, there is no shortage of tips and tricks to make the changes stick. SPLURGE OR PURGE Relying on your willpower after a long day in the office is no way to start off a New Years diet. If you’re looking to drop inches before bikini season, avoiding sugar simply won’t make the cut. In addition to ditching the sugar, clear your cupboards, overcome that carbloaded-chocolaty enemy and purge your home before the cravings hit and you start this New Year with a splurge. START THE SEASON WITH REASON “Be reasonable” is never a phrase that is pleasant to hear but this age old advice will save you from the pitfalls of resolution failure. If you’re determined to pick up a new hobby don’t expect to be perfect from the get go. With unfair expectations, you’re more likely to give up than discover a hidden talent.

80

BREAK IT DOWN And I don’t mean dancing, unless of course your resolution involves hip-hop lessons and a rap album, in which case carry on. Instead, give yourself manageable goals with rewards. Simply planning five days at a time will safeguard you from being overwhelmed. TAKE ACTION WITH DISTRACTIONS If it’s cravings you’re fighting then nothing works like a good old fashion distraction. Who ever said procrastination was bad? Take a time out and refocus your brain. From breaking habits to conquering your sugar addiction, a switch in scenery or a bit of entertainment is an excellent way to forget all about it. FORGET ABOUT PERFECT You want perfect? Well stop it. Weather your inner perfectionista with your optimista and take some time to enjoy the small achievements. “I lost five pounds” is a lot more encouraging than “I am still twenty pounds away from my goal.” It’s all about perspective. IS RESOLUTION YOUR SOLUTION? If the stress of making New Years Resolutions outweighs the benefits, then ditch them, sit back, pour yourself a glass of wine, and just enjoy yourself the way you are. Who needs resolutions anyways?
