MONKEY SHASTA SMITH

Shasta Smith, a fiery redhead and a self proclaimed spitfire, owns up to her nickname and the name of her company, The Vintage Monkey.   “I am an unconventional designer of interior and exterior architectural spaces and a spicy lover of motorcycles,” she said. Bound by no rules, Smith creates custom signature statement pieces for clients including commercial, residential, hospitality, educational and consulting. The name of her brand came from an old nickname a friend used to call her. “It quickly became the brand and identity which I’m known for.” Shasta Smith is also the star and host of Red Hot Design, a reality show about design. “Television is a complicated beast, if you are not 100 percent passionate about what you do, you will fail,” she explained. “There is very little sleep LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | MARCH 2015

Such as world famous rock stars like David Bowie and fashion designer, Alexander McQueen and style icon, Daphne Guinness. “I admire creating and teaching my clients that function is first and foremost, but style is an interpretation that makes projects noteworthy,” she stated. Originally from San Francisco, Smith moved to Sacramento when she was 8 years old, and while she adores Northern California, the allergies that come with it are quite inconvenient for her. In fact, she jokes about always having tissues by her side.    Smith has been riding motorcycles since she was a teen, but only began designing and restoring bikes around seven years ago. Unable to ride due to a “non-motorcycle” injury, she found the best way she could be around bikes was to design modifications

and very little time to spend with loved ones while filming.” Not shy of the cameras, she spent the better part of 2014 filming for the show. And for her, the best part was being able to display her motorcycle designs in the background of her studio. The TV show is featured on fyi network, and can be viewed at fyi.tv. Clips of the show can also be viewed on her website at thevintagemonkey.com.   For Smith, designing is in her blood, as she is a third generation designer. Her grandmother studied architecture under Frank Lloyd Wright and her mother is an interior designer in Southern California. “As a child I preached that I would never do what my mom did for a

and restore them in her shop. Right now, she has seven. Her favorite? “A 1972 CB175 converted into a cafe racer,” she said. “It’s a pint size spit fire, just like me.” Smith has a passion for her work and giving her clients what they want. She claims one of the funniest aspects to her job is when clients wish to only see the finished product. “It’s pretty funny to hear the large amounts of joyous profanity that flies out of their mouths when they see the finished product,” she joked. Her fun and approachable demeanor has made her a fan favorite, drawing several jokes from her clients.”My favorite client comment to date is ‘well if the room is any indication of what Shasta wears, it will be done in black leather.’” “And for the record, I’ve never designed an all-black leather room,” she added.

TIPS FOR PREPARING TO BUILD TIPS FOR SELLING A NEW CUSTOM HOME YOUR HOME BY DEBI AMBROFF BY DEBI AMBROFF

This first quarter of 2015 is everything we hoped for! Seller's are preparing their homes for market, the inventory levels are still low and the buyers are out in droves looking for the home of their dreams.   In the Bay Area, the Seller's typically order a home and pest inspection up front, but here locally that trend has not caught on yet. Being a proactive Seller and ordering upfront is money well spent. Where many transactions fall apart are in the negotiations of repairs. How you live in your home is typically not how you sell you home and many home owners live in their homes for years with deferred

LOL

maintenance....appliances not functioning properly, a water heaters that leaks, windows that have failed seals, fences that are worn and the list goes on and on. Yet they want top dollar from their home because the home down the street that was the same model sold at a premium, but that home was immaculate, model perfect and true "Pride of Ownership." Buyers formulate an opinion of your home from the moment their realtor's car pulls to the curb and if you have taken steps to prepare your home in advance, you will be guaranteed a much smoother transaction and in turn put more dollars in your pocket.   When interviewing a home inspector, ask the inspector what type of report format he or she provides. There are many styles of reports used by property inspectors, including the checklist, computer generated inspection programs, and the narrative style. There are excellent inspectors in our area and many of them have been or still are licensed general contractors, therefore knowledgeable about local building code too. Some reports are delivered on site and some may take a few days to receive. All reporting systems have pros and cons. I feel the best are those that are also accompanied with photos for the homeowner or the new buyer to see and understand the issue. The most important issue with an inspection report is the descriptions given for each item or component. A report that indicates the condition as "Good", LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | MARCH 2015

23

"Fair" or "Poor" without a detailed explanation, is vague and can be easily misinterpreted. An example of a vague condition would be: Kitchen Sink: Condition Good, Fair, or Poor. None of these descriptions gives the homeowner or the buyer an idea of what is wrong. Does the sink have a cosmetic problem? Does the home have a plumbing problem? A good report should supply you with descriptive information on the condition of the site and home. An example of a descriptive condition is: "Kitchen sink: Condition - Minor wear, heavy wear, damaged, rust stains, or chips in enamel finish. Recommend sealing sink at counter top."    As you can see, this narrative description includes a recommendation for repair. Narrative reports without recommendations for repairing deficient items may be difficult to comprehend should your knowledge of construction be limited. Take the time and become familiar with the report. Should the report have a legend, key, symbols or icons, read and understand them thoroughly. There may be a legend for a "safety issue", or "correction is recommended", or "further evaluation" is needed. The more information provided, the easier to understand the overall condition. It is not be necessary for you to accompany your inspector through the entire inspection, in fact most of them prefer that you do not, as it slows the process down, but it always is best to meet at the end of the inspection to go over all the findings. A good inspector should be able to explain the answers to your questions. If for some reason a question cannot be answered at the time of the inspection, the inspector should research the question and obtain the answer for you. For instance, if the inspector's report states that the concrete foundation has common cracks, be sure to ask, "Why are they common?" The answer you should receive will be along these lines: common cracks are usually due to normal concrete curing and or shrinkage.   This helps you to understand the condition of the home and the details of the report whether you are a seller doing your inspection in advance of selling your home, or if you are the buyer doing your inspection during the due diligence period of your purchase. If you are the Seller and you do your inspection in advance, the report will become a part of your Disclosure Package. The repairs that you complete from that inspection should be well documented, noting who completed the repair... the homeowner, outside vendor or contractor. Be sure to include all receipts and submit to your agent with your Disclosure Package. This way the new buyer knows that you have completed the findings and who actually performed the work. Buyers really do appreciate this documentation and will be very grateful to the Seller for their efforts while making a smooth transaction for all parties involved. In you need a referral for a local home inspector to do your pre-sale inspection, contact your favorite realtor. Start the process now. We are currently in the BEST time to get your home SOLD!

tradition OLD SACRAMENTO ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE

Thousands of spectators gather to watch hundreds of marchers dressed in green, along with Irish and Highland dancers, pipe and drum bands, historic re-enactors and a variety of cultural organizations. “The O’ Sacramento parade is a family-centered event that has become a much-anticipated celebration. It is one of Sacramento’s most colorful and fun traditions,” said Chris McSwain, Business District Manager of the Old Sacramento Business Association. “We are proud to host this annual signature event that Northern California residents and their family can enjoy.” This free event begins at 1pm. Old Sacramento roads will be closed from noon until 3pm. FOR MORE INFORMATION: oldsacramento.com/special-events/st-patricks-day-parade

BLUE DIAMOND ALMONDS SHAMROCK’N HALF MARATHON

WHERE TO GET YOUR GREEN ON... JUST YOUR LUCK, WE FOUND FIVE OF THE BEST PLACES TO CELEBRATE ST. PATRICK’S DAY! From green beer to corned beef and cabbage, there is no shortage of celebrating this Irish event. We found five local spots that celebrate the day in traditional Irish fashion from kilts and pipers to beer and whiskey.

KILT PUB A local favorite Sacramento neighborhood bar that is sure to please you on this holiday is the Kilt Pub in Sacramento. On the big day, the pub will be featuring a special menu loaded with Scottish favorites such as sliders, corn beef, mash and bangers, and of course, their famous fish and chips. The pub features 20 different beers on tap with 15 bottled beers. But you won’t find any green beer here. “I tried it my first year, and it wasn’t very popular,” said Olive Poledenik, owner of the pub. However, you will see plenty of green, whether it be decorations or fun outfits worn by fellow patrons. FOR MORE INFORMATION: KILT PUB 4235 Arden Way Sacramento, (916) 487-4979 kilt-pub.com

THE BOXING DONKEY, ROSEVILLE If you’re an early riser, get the day started at The Boxing Donkey in Roseville where they will be opening their doors and starting the festivities at 6am. The parking lot adjacent to the pub will be closed off and will include a beer garden, live music and several different bars. The pub celebrates by creating fun custom shirts for the day which will be on sale day of for $20 or 2-3 days in advance at the bar. The Boxing Donkey will also be featuring a limited menu of four items in honor of the Irish staple: corn beef. There will be corn beef colcannon, corn beef tacos, corn beef nachos, and clam chowder. While St. Patrick’s Day is a one-day event, 36 Handles in El Dorado Hills has decided to make it a four day extravaganza. The event begins on Saturday where there will be craft brew tasting from 20 different local breweries. Sunday will feature wine and cheese tasting from local wineries, with the cheese provided by Nugget Market. Monday will be industry night for people who have to work on St. Patrick’s Day with several drink specials. Tuesday will feature an outdoor bar, face painting, live music and a buffet with the traditional Irish favorites, corn beef, cabbage, and sausage and mash, to name a few. “We are the place to go, I’m not going to lie,” said owner, Richard Righton. “It’s just a big party all day.” FOR MORE INFORMATION: 36 HANDLES 1010 White Rock Rd., El Dorado Hills (916) 941-3606, 36handles.com

DE VERE’S PUB, SACRAMENTO For a full Irish experience, you can head to De Vere’s, an Irish pub located in downtown Sacramento. The day gets an early start for the pub, as they open at 9am with a continuous influx of people until they close at 1:30am, and in order to accommodate the crowd, the restaurant removes all of the furniture. The festivities continue throughout the day with drums and pipers in kilts, along with the traditional meals such as corn beef and cabbage and special chips, along with an abundance of Irish beers and whiskeys. On Monday, March 16, the pub will be the host of the annual St. Baldrick’s Day, where the St. Baldrick’s Foundation will shave heads and raise money for childhood cancer research. FOR MORE INFORMATION: DE VERE’S PUB 1521 L. St. Sacramento, (916) 231-9947 deverspub.com

St. Patrick’s Day was first celebrated in the United States in 1737, organized by the Charitable Irish Society of Boston. The White House fountain is dyed green on St. Patrick’s Day. A 2012 estimate pegged the total amount spent on beer for St. Patrick’s celebrations at $245 million. St. Patrick was British. St. Patrick’s color was actually blue. Green became the color associated with the holiday in the 18th century during the Irish independence movement.

The Blarney Stone Irish Pub, named for the famous Blarney Stone in Ireland, is a fun place to celebrate the Irish holiday. Owner, Rocky Moffitt’s family is from the Ireland and don’t live very far from Blarney Castle and he even made a small recreation of it at the pub. For that day, The Blarney Stone will have two full bars, one inside and one outside in the parking lot, where there will also be a beer garden (with green beer, of course). There will be live music from DJ Victorious, Irish artist, Brendan Desmond, DJ Alazzawi, and reggae band, Street Urchind. You might even be lucky and catch a leprechaun at this bar. “My employees usually like to dress up as leprechauns,” Moffit said with a laugh.

Create A Sweet Escape

With winter wrapping up, you can escape your cabin fever and take on the outdoors. Now is the perfect time to start preparing for outdoor space renovations to create a fresh look for a backyard getaway. There are a variety of decisions to be made from furniture and decor to landscape and lighting. We asked Guillaume Gentet, an award-winning decoratorensemblier, to weigh in on backyard makeovers and trends to help you get started. >>

• Outdoor Furniture: When selecting outdoor furni-

ture, I suggest looking for something heavier. I love the furniture frames that look like white bamboo. They’re delicate and refined, but allow you to accent the space with bright, colorful fabrics and patterns to carry the fun of the outdoors into your furniture. I particularly love the products and furniture from Tuuci’s Unique Furnishings and outdoor fabrics from Missoni. Tucci also has great canopy tents that not only provide shade, but also come with curtains for added privacy. In terms of storage for pool supplies, kids toys, and barbeque tools, there are a number of great lined chests that are waterproof and functional but don’t look like traditional plastic crates.

• Decorating:

Whether you’re refreshing or completely reimagining your outdoor space for the upcoming summer season, I recommend starting with a landscaper in April. This way, before you start entertaining, your flowers have bloomed and you have a fun, decorative yard. I think people enjoy their backyard more if it feels like a hotel or an oasis. To achieve this, make sure everything is matching including umbrellas, furniture, pillows, cushions, even flowers. Personally, I love using pink— it’s a warm and fun color that goes well with everything. Also, flowers come in virtually every shade of pink so you’ll always be able to find the flower you want! Set tables by each lounge chair and purchase plastic glassware that looks like crystal but is safe for the pool area. This year, outdoor accent rugs are out, while stone and grass (even fake grass!) are in. Traditionally you can lay square stones and leave a little grass in between, but there are so many different patterns and stone shapes you can use to add visual interest. One of my favorite ways to create a true outdoor living room is to incorporate fire pits and fireplaces— sometimes even mounting a television around a seating area to bring the amenities of the indoors, outside.

“Add dimension and style to your backyard fence by putting up a few used pallets and creating a mini garden of colorful flowers, herbs, and succulents.” - Keri Christain, Marketing Director of Pottery World

Miami Beach Backyard • Yard: I try to always look for two things when decorating or renovating a yard: the first is the size, the second is the topography. If the yard is really big, it’s fun to think about what activities it can accommodate beyond just swimming. In one yard I renovated, we were able to install an entire volleyball net! In terms of topography, I like to find ways to create levels in the backyard. I love when the yard is big and flat and I can build a wooden deck with various heights and levels, creating more visual interest and depth in the outdoor space. I’ve also seen the option to create beautiful and functional storage options under the deck where umbrellas or other pool items can be protected from weather. •Lighting: An important aspect to a yard that is often overlooked is lighting. You can buy plastic balls with LED lights inside that look beautiful floating in the pool. You can add battery operated candles to the tables and seating areas to create a romantic environment, or place them in white paper bags and thoughtfully scatter them around the landscape, softening up a usually dark space. 38

After fully redecorating her entire home, the Miami Beach resident created her perfect beach-themed interiors and wanted to give her outdoor living space a chic and modern makeover to match. Looking for something that popped, she turned to Source Outdoor to create custom patio furniture to fit her needs. They mixed and matched between two collections to provide lounge chairs, loveseats, coffee tables, and side tables from its South Beach Collection, as well as chaise lounges and dining chairs from its Fusion Collection. Because the homeowner is famous for her entertaining, she asked Source Outdoor to build her a custom 12-person dining table with thick, 6-inch slats, something that she couldn’t find anywhere else. Made in America, the products from both collections are made with a powder coated aluminum frame finished in white, and are upholstered in Chella Textiles’ Tussah fabric in a Thistle color. The couches and loveseats are paired with sapphire blue throw pillows in Chella’s Tussah Lapis textile for a timelessly nautical appeal.

Retro Hollywood Chic (Wellington, FL photos)

Guillaume Gentet was called to renovate a newly acquired property in Wellington, Florida, serving as a family’s part-time retreat during the November through April equestrian season. Along with all the interiors, Gentet fashioned the expansive outdoor pool area and pergola that houses a separate kitchen and fire pit. Inspired by retro 1940s Hollywood style, the poolside is draped in icy blue Chanel tweed fabric set against white chaise lounges. Overlooking a canal, the newly refurbished pool brings vintage glamour to a contemporary space. Outdoor fabrics were also utilized indoors to complement the client’s active lifestyle. Completed last summer, this part-time retreat offers the comforts of a true home. Combining custom and antique elements, Gentet’s stunning indoor and outdoor transformation offers a fresh twist to traditional design aesthetics.

Colorful Arrangement

Kim Granatell from The Real Housewives of New Jersey updated her outdoor living space with a new Techno-bloc masonry, renovated landscape design, and chic furniture update. Paired with custom, whimsical green cushions, Source Outdoor’s aluminum-framed, wicker pieces bring a splash of color to the earthy-themed estate. With an abundance of space to work with, Source Outdoor used products from the Circa Collection, Manhattan Collection, and St. Tropez collection to fill the space with a variety of seating and dining options. A circular couch and cushioned ottoman surround a fireplace built with moss stones from Firerock. Fusion lounge chairs and an umbrella sit in the shallowest end of the pool while St. Tropez dining set provides the perfect space for entertaining next to the yard’s kitchen-sized outdoor cooking area.

“Help define your backyard space by adding groups of various sized small colorful pots containing seasonal flowers or succulents.” - Keri Christain, Marketing Director of Pottery World.

NRS Luxury ESTATES NICK SADEK BY KELSEY WEHSELS

Nick Sadek’s claim to fame might have been selling Eddie Murphy’s home in Los Lagos in 2007, but his strong work ethic and wealth of knowledge have made him successful in the luxury home real estate industry long before then. His enthusiasm for real estate started at a young age watching his father, who was a developer, conduct business. “I always loved looking at new homes and going to new areas,” he explained. Obtaining his license in 1986, Sadek began his career working at Great Western Real Estate in Carmichael and then Lyons and Associates in Fair Oaks. In 1988, he

established NRS Luxury Estates, serving Placer, Sacramento and El Dorado Counties where he is currently very active in El Dorado Hills. “It was easier,” he said. “It just made sense to have my own real estate office. It provided more deals that I could put together.”   Although he admits it can be challenging at times when emotions run high with his clients, he loves meeting new families and people, whether they are looking to find their dream home, or sell and move on. His dedication to his work has awarded him several achievements and has even earned him the title of “The Number One Closer in Luxury Home Sales in Placer County” from 2010 to 2014. He is also a 4 year winner of the Five Star Award for providing quality service to his clients. Client satisfaction is one of the many reasons for his success. He has a reputation for not only going the extra mile, but building a rapport with each client. And because he has surrounded himself with an amazing team, he is able to focus on each client individually. “Sincerity and honesty go a long way,” he affirmed.    His passion for this industry is apparent when you ask what his hobbies are. “I love real estate,” he said with a laugh. However, when he is not at the office, he enjoys spending time with his family, wife Dina, daughter, Dayna, and son, Adam. One of their many favorite activities to do together is travel and go on vacations. Their favorite places? The Bay Area, San Francisco and Monterey. While he likes to travel, he loves making Granite Bay his home. “We love living here,” he said. “Placer County is a great place to live in, especially to raise a family.”

NAR SAID:

HOW NOT TO

DIY [DO IT YOURSELF] BY NAR BUSTAMANTE

Fasten your seat belts, you are about to hear something you don’t hear often. However, most of you will know exactly what I’m talking about here. In the world of “Do It Yourself” how many times have you gotten excited by a television show that makes home improvement seem like so much fun? All the fun people, music, fast moving cameras and slick talking about how easy it all is, then an amazing result within 30 minutes. By this time, you’ve barely made yourself comfortable in your chair, but somehow within that time, someone made their home look like it should be on TV…..Wait, it IS on TV…Now you’re convinced that you can remodel your home, so you gear up a list for the big box hardware store and get your family involved in

the remodel of… say something easy, like your kitchen. That was a bit sarcastic…a kitchen remodel is really, really difficult. It will only take a few of your precious weekends, right? So down the hardware aisle you all go stocking up on paint, basic tools, some appliances and fixtures. You stop to ask a few questions to the person working the aisle to only realize they have no idea what you’re talking about, but with all confidence, they will guide you to an item you’ve never seen before and somehow get it in your cart. You pay, pile everything in your car, go out to lunch and on your way home, you realize it is already 2:30 in the afternoon. By the time you get home and unload everything in the garage, you are already confused and a bit cranky, but determined to be the remodel warrior.    A new kitchen is on its way, right? Two

months into your kitchen remodel, with the end is nowhere in sight and the glamorous result… well, not as glamorous as the show made it out to be. You are now committed to it, tired of it and let’s be honest, the results are not quite like the magazines and it ended up costing you a lot of money and time. So, this is an article about “How to NOT do it yourself!” Not to spend your precious family time and weekends laboring details that require multiple trips to the hardware store, and do not generate the results you are after. I find that on average, when a homeowner does their own remodel, there is little or no financial gain to the value of the project itself, and at times, the complete home value does not change and the return on investment is zero. That does not even count all the headaches and weekends lost.   As a National award winning designer and builder, I am an advocate of quality of life. Quality of life comes with doing what you do well and letting the true experts do what they do well. With incredibly helpful websites like houzz. com, you can see public portfolios of all the best builders and designers in your area. Take the time to interview a few and hire one to design and build your dream remodel! So dear friends, this spring, invest in a paddle board or something fun, pack a lunch and you don’t even have to watch the pros do it…It will be done when you get home!

MAUI

MAUI BY DON & ANN JACKSON

EXUDING THE ALOHA SPIRIT OF HAWAII Let’s be patently clear. Hawaii is our favorite preeminent vacation destination. In the world! We’ve been blessed to travel to many exotic tropical islands around the globe but Hawaii remains our number one choice.

When our travel writing days come to a close Hawaii will remain as the one destination we hope to head off to for at least one vacation each and every year. And unlike many of our friends who have developed a personal 44

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | MARCH 2015

allegiance to one island, we have equally strong feelings about vacationing on each of the major four islands: Maui, Oahu, Kauai and Hawaiithe Big Island. We find that each island is different enough to pique our interest to such a degree that alternating vacations to one island every four years sounds like a perfect future vacationing strategy. Heck, if the islands were as close to California as Catalina Island is to our Southern California beach cities we’d probably move there! Maui, the Valley Isle, is the perfect

choice for anyone seeking a really active vacation but still preferring an overall laid back vibe. Maui has an abundance of activities and things to see and do only surpassed by the heavily populated Oahu, yet obviously providing visitors a much less cosmopolitan atmosphere. Blessed with three large and distinctive resort areas the island has a ton of options for vacationers so here’s our take on each of the three, based mostly on our most recent visit but also drawing on our previous stays.

Wailea/Kihei:

When we want to relax we like to opt for at least a week in the upscale Wailea area where we recently hunkered down at the beautiful Fairmont Kea Lani Resort and Spa. We were fortunate enough to stay here when it first opened around 25 years ago and before it came under the Fairmont banner. As good as it was before, Fairmont’s involvement has really enhanced this gorgeous property. Our dinner in their Ko Restaurant was a delightful culinary sojourn. www.fairmont.com/kea-lani-maui/. If you, your family or company are interested in the most opulent vacation accommodations we’ve ever seen on Maui be sure to check out the grandiose Ho’olei Villas at Grand Wailea. The Villas and the Grand Wailea Resort, are both managed under Hilton’s premier Waldorf Astoria collection and both exhibit the wow factor. Even if you’re not staying at the Wailea or the Villas be sure to dine at their signature floating restaurant, Humumunukunukuapua’a, named after Hawaii’s state fish. For a more

casual dinner in Wailea we strongly endorse the Monkeypod Kitchen, part of the Merriman group of excellent dining choices. Especially high marks for their fish tacos and short ribs! www.monkeypodkitchen.com/wailea. Kihei offers much more variety and more reasonably priced restaurants, hotels and condos than the neighboring high-end Wailea and deserves strong consideration for a budget minded family vacation.

Lahaina/Ka’anapali:

GRAND WAILEA

Lahaina was the first capital of Hawaii’s monarchy and remains an important part of their storied history and we love strolling the entire town on every visit. Today it provides the island’s party central with many nightlife options, art fairs under their famous banyan tree and a significant variety of quality restaurants. For a special occasion dinner we’d recommend the Lahaina Grill, one

of the finest dinner spots in all of Hawaii. www.lahainagrill.com. On the opposite end of the dining cost spectrum from Lahaina Grill be sure to have at least one lunch at Aloha Mixed Plate, a local’s favorite right on the beach. If you’re an adventurous diner try a Moco Loco, a rather wild but surprisingly tasty combo of eggs, hamburger, gravy, rice and macaroni salad www.alohamixedplate.com Lodging in Lahaina is rather limited so we always opt to stay in nearby Ka’anapali Beach area. If you prefer large private condos on the beach, Ka’anapali Ali’i offers the perfect choice and location. These extra spacious units run from 1500 to 1900 square feet far surpassing most hotels in a similar price range. www.kaanapalialii.com. For years our favorite hotel in Ka’anapali has been the Hyatt Regency and we consider their Drums of the Pacific as the island’s best Luau. Hyatt’s newest restaurant Japengo, featuring Pacific Rim creations is a stunning addition. www.maui.hyatt.com.

Recommended Activities and Sidetrips:

For an ultimate water adventure sign up with Alii Nui for their catamaran sailing out to the little Molokini volcanic outcropping. Super friendly crew, sumptuous breakfast and lunch offerings plus unlimited libations were as jake as the snorkeling, close-up whale sightings and scuba thrills. www.aliinuimaui.com. A visit to the Maui Ocean Center in Ma’alaea Harbor and taking the insider’s Fin & Flipper Tour you’ll learn this aquarium may just be one of the most unique on the planet: most of their sea life are kept no longer than a year before being placed back into their natural environment. www. mauioceancenter.com. Driving up to the top of Haleakala National Park to capture a sunrise or sunset (our preference) from the volcano’s peak is a highlight. For the more adventurous souls, sign up for the infamous adrenaline rush bike ride down the mountain.

THE HYATT REGEN CY

Drive into the Iao Valley and hike up to see the famous Iao Needle and cascading water features. On the way back stop into to see the 1883’s Bailey House Museum and go a few extra miles to visit the Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum located in the former mill superintendent’s home. www.mauimuseum.org; www. sugarmuseum.com;Sign up for a rare opportunity to tour the 8 acre O’O Farm, where owners of Lahaina’s Pacific’O Restaurant have committed to growing quality local produce to give their diners a true farm to table experience. After the tour pick your own produce and sit back and enjoy an outdoor gourmet lunch prepared by a young iron-chef-to-be. www.oofarm.com. If time permits, after leaving O’O Farm and you have an interest, you might want to visit and tour the nearby Organic Ocean Vodka Distillery and/or the Surfing Goat Dairy for award-winning local vodka (plus a new rum) and goat cheeses. www.surfinggoatcheesefarm. com; www.oceanvodka.com.   Stop at Ho’okipa Lookout to see one of Hawaii’s world class windsurfing spots. If you have up to 3 hours of time consider a drive up to Hana on one of the curviest roads known to man where incredible overlook vistas, waterfalls and the famous Hana Resort await. Whether you head to Maui to play golf, engage in any of the multiple water sports available or partake in any of the activities we’ve suggested we’re confident it will be one of the best vacation choices you’ve made in years. For all things Maui to include events, more activities, lodging and dining info go to: www. visitmaui.com. SPECIAL TIP: If you are renting a car be sure to check out www.discounthawaiicarrental.com which saved us about $100/week over our best direct bid from the major car rental companies.

36 Handles Pub & Eatery is everything that is right with British pub-style food under one roof. Owner and restaurant genius, Richard Righton started working in London restaurants when he was just 15 years old giving him several decades of taste and experience.

36 HANDLES

His motto for 36 Handles is that is a little bit of everything. “I try to give a full Irish/British experience in El Dorado Hills,” he said. “A place to come and have a drink or bring the whole family for great food.” And true to his statement, the bar and restaurant offers family style food and atmosphere with a killer pub. It’s undoubtedly the best place in El Dorado Hills for comfort food and a pint or two. ROTATING TAPS The pub has dozens of great local craft brews on tap for those beer drinkers ready to experience a variety of flavors. The rotating tap carries hard to get beers alongside regional favorites alternating throughout any given month. Whether you’re after a heavy IPA or a stout their menu can please everyone several times over. Just to name a few they routinely carry Deschutes, Knee Deep, and Dogfish Head. Additionally, if you’re not the beer drinking type, they carry a selection of hard ciders for the sweet tooth and wine for everyone else. 36 Handles uses their taps to pay tribute to the art of beer while maintaining a relaxed pub style atmosphere. MENU Next to the beer, the menu is a vital part of what makes 36 Handles so special to the area. With traditional pub style, like flatbreads and artisan grilled cheese, the sophisticated eater is bound to be satisfied. However, this doesn’t mean those looking for a traditional pub meal are at a loss either. The menu carries everything from pub nachos and jalapeño macaroni and cheese to classics like corned beef and bangers and mash. It’s the perfect place for traditional

British eating made out of high quality ingredients by professional chefs. The food can only be classified as surprisingly sophisticated with a homemade flair, and is great for any family night out or a quick drink in El Dorado Hills. ENTERTAINMENT 36 Handles also carries out pub tradition in regular weekly entertainment. Alongside a full slew of one time events,

the pub also offers weeknight fun to unwind after work. Monday nights are pool and beer, Tuesdays have live music, and Thursday is, of course, trivia night. To see their full event schedule visit their website. They also have a daily happy hour between 3 and 6 pm. So grab your best British accent and head there tonight for a pint and traditional pub favorites. FOR RESERVATIONS:

RAISING (& ENJOYING) THE BAR BY NICK DEDIER

spices and aromatics then you should avoid it all together. Trust me, the only thing you’re missing out on is a headache in the morning. 2. Take a chance and let the bartender drive. Give them some parameters and have them make you a cocktail. This may surprise you with something you’ve never had or experienced before. 3. Don’t forget the classics. When done well an Old Fashion, Manhattan or Gimlet can be a great way to start your night as well as a good litmus test for the quality of the bartender and bartenders. 4. K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) should be the motto of every bartender. Use good quality ingredients with restraint. It is easy to hide behind a colorful cocktail with 15 ingredients but when it comes down to it, the simple luxury of 3 or 4 ingredient cocktails with a simple stir or shake is unbeatable. 5. Patience, eye contact and a smile will win you a lot of friends among bartenders, servers and cocktail servers. 6. The bartender with their head down, over a cutting board, pumping out enough cocktails to quench the thirst of the entire restaurant, is the “well bartender” for the night. Waiting for the attention of the “counter bartender” will always be more productive than trying to slip your order into the well. 7. Be willing to slide down or change chairs to make room for others to join at the bar. Occupying the empty chair next to you to make room for two more will earn you good bar karma. (And remember if someone slides down for you, buy them a drink.)

Unless you’ve been under a rock, it is easy to see that the Cocktail Culture that has been carefully incubated in the world’s great cities is finally leaking into the surrounding population. This, much like Nick Dedier the great food network blitz of the 90’s, is flooding the hospitality and dining world with so many products and so much information that sometimes it is very hard to keep it all straight. While it may seem that all of these options and choices that are out there 54

should make it easier to enjoy great drinks it, in fact, makes it much more difficult to sift through the BS and actually find a Cocktail game that will improve your overall dining experience and dollar value. I have some sobering advice on how to use the restaurants bar to its most full and simply awesome potential. Below are a few of the Dos & Don’ts 1. Step away from the fireball and the whipped cream vodka… Somehow, someway these chemically sodden excuses for booze have made their way into the mainstream. If a restaurant isn’t infusing their own liquors with fresh fruits,

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | MARCH 2015

In my own opinion there is nothing more fun than bellying up to the bar for the best food, service and attention in town. Remember to always opt for quality over quantity, value over price, classics over flash, and to give in to the communal atmosphere that the bar provides. Most importantly do not forget to catch a ride home and be safe.

Bray

Vineyards BY EMILY GUERRERO

WHERE BRAY GOT IT’S START: Bray Vineyards was originally started in 1986 when Oliver and Robin Bray purchased 50 acres of beautiful Shenandoah Valley land. Just a few short years later, they began supplying their grape varietals like Zinfandel and Sangiovese to big name vineyards like Vino Noceto and Montevina. With this success they decided it was time to open up their very own winery and by 2004, they were open to the public with their own unique wines. Bray Vineyards has found it’s niche in the Shenandoah Valley by creating whimsical wines that capture their spirit of exploration and hard work. Their dedication to enjoying what they do is translated in each drop of the Bray Vineyards label.

THE WINES OF BRAY VINEYARDS: Bray was first famously known for their bold Zinfandel blend named BrayZin Hussy Red which was later followed by the BrayZin Hussy Blonde. This mix of Viognier, Verdelho, and Sauvignon Blanc creates a luscious flavor that isn’t duplicated by any other local vineyard. Beyond these two rockstar wines, Bray Vineyards grows 20 different varieties of grapes including their latest introduction of Iberian varietals. Their motto embraces a future of uncommon flavors for contemporary twists on traditional favorites. With their new vines and new wine mixes, it’s no wonder Bray is known for pushing the limits to create a different kind of wine experience for their patrons. Their fresh outlook is well-received and adored by many a wine lover in Northern California.

ETIQUETTE IN THEIR TASTING ROOM: One of the most unusual aspects of Bray Vineyards is that their commitment to educating wine drinkers creates a really interesting tasting room experience. They offer up some fun guidelines that they feel help make the wine experience better than ever and dozens of visitors respond well to the new information. Some of their hints and tips include taking three sips to truly experience the wine’s full flavor and avoiding cell phone use to help all visitors relax. You can see their full wine etiquette on their site, but we recommend taking a peek and keeping it in mind for all your wine tasting ventures. Whether you’re a casual taster or a connoisseur, wine tasting is an art and Bray honors the long standing tradition. AWARD WINNING TASTE AND ATMOSPHERE: The vineyard and tasting room sit in a beautiful location in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. Their laid back approach to wine tasting is both sophisticated without sacrificing the enjoyment of a leisurely day. Bray Vineyards is surrounded by vibrant colors and rolling California hills. It’s beautiful setting earns it a rank among some of our favorite local vineyards. Not to mention they have over seven years of award winning wine combinations that simply make it an affair to remember. Their tasting room is open Wednesday- Monday every week from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Make it a weekend getaway spot or a day trip, it’s a dream come true for wine lovers of every kind. winery solely features blends from their estate vineyards. They now offer both their own label wines and custom winemaking options for those looking to create their own one of a kind taste. However, as common practice the family ensures they never lose sight of the fundamentals of good growing above all else in their quest to make great wines. Their vines include a large selection of varietals from chardonnay to cabernet grapes.

WHAT ARE THEIR BEST WINES They currently have two brands the Lange Twins and Caricature. The first, Lange Twins, boasts of a handful of great wine options. Their family favorites are their Sangiovese Rose that is being released this year and the Midnight Reserve which is the bordeaux blend. Caricature is a more artistic side of their winemaking skills. They craft their wines to embellish distinctive flavors and elements that they consider to be approachable. The red wine blend is a huge favorite in their tasting rooms. WHAT SETS THEM APART? For the last 30 years, the Lange family has only practiced sustainable winegrowing. This makes them unlike many other Lodi Wineries because they are completely committed to both economic profitability and environmental health. Their winemaking style celebrates a combination of traditional farming methods and technological advances. For an afternoon of clean drinking and amazing flavor depth, spend some time in the Lange Twins tasting room. You’ll love every drop.

Like a lot of Lodi Appellation wineries, Lange Twins is a generational winery and that has been making wine for over 5 generations. In 2006, they opened up their winery to start showcasing their passion for great wines. They firmly believe that all good wine starts with the growing process and their strong background in vineyards has allowed them create quite a few memorable tastes. Lange Twins is dedicated to staying a family run winery and their dedication is to keeping it running in the family. In the 1870’s, the first Lange family member settles in Lodi and started a long standing tradition of farming and agriculture. In 1974, the family decided to start their own vineyard and Randall and Brad Lange have been winegrowing with their children and wives ever since.

ABOUT WINEMAKERS AND VINEYARD The Lange Twins winery currently has two full time winemakers on staff. Both of which have been with the vineyard since the very beginning after previously working at Robert Mondavi. Season Delight

SEASON DELIGHT LEMONS

LEMONS BY EMILY GUERRERO

Lemons are an amazing flavor element to add to just about any type of dish. The intense and refreshing flavor pairs well with anything from your breakfast tea to spicing up dinner. Their biggest claim to fame is that these little fruits are both jam packed with disease fighting vitamins and they can last for extend periods of time because of the thick rind. As we are making the transition from the heavy winds of winter to a fresh spring, lemon’s are an excellent way to do a little spring cleaning on your diet. When life give your lemons there are plenty of reasons to say thank you. 60

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | MARCH 2015

Despite their initial sour taste, lemons are a great asset to enhance water or liven up a salad. They are full of vitamin C which helps your immune system fend off the seasonal colds and provide you with a boost of energy to stay more alert. Lemons are frequently used in cleanses to help purify the body of toxins but that doesn’t mean they are for strictly serious use. With a reliable vodka, a lemon and some sugar is all you need for amazing shooters or a lemondrop martini. And their bright and fun color practically screams spring. So go ahead, pick up some lemons next time you’re at the store.
