TALK TO US

We’re thinking about

memories.

For my family, summer wouldn’t be summer without a trip to Cape Cod. To hear what’s on other families’ must-do lists, see page 9.

Why? Partly because it’s August, and that’s when the staff here tries to pack in those last sandy, sunny, s’moresy experiences with our families before school starts. (Can you blame us? Last winter was a doozy here in New England!) But it’s also because our creative team has been making changes to FamilyFun that will help you wring even more happy moments and unforgettable memories from each issue. First, we’ve added more of the stuff we know you love, such as clever D.I.Y. projects (see page 22), family-tested

GIVE US A PIECE OF YOUR MIND Did you know FamilyFun

vacation ideas (page 72), and yummy recipes we’re sure will go into your dinner rotation (page 30). You’ll also find a whole new section, called Share (page 9), where you can do just that: send in your best tips, solutions, and photos and see what other families are up to. And then there’s my personal favorite, Big Fun, a new department that is so epic, so cool, that … well, you’ll just have to turn to page 6 and see! We’d love to hear what you think of the new format: please drop us a line (page 4). And then go soak up all that August has to offer. Ann Hallock EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

THE COOLEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD Ice cream on toast? You bet. Crispy-warm and frosty-sweet all at once, these real-deal ice cream sandwiches will rock your family’s summer.

To make a batch, first let the ice cream soften for 5 minutes. Toast the bread (we like the thin-sliced kind here) and trim off the crusts, then top with ice cream, smoothing it with the back of a spoon. Add fixings. (To minimize drips, assemble each on waxed paper, wrap it up, slice in half, and serve.) Try one of these combos or devise a dagwood of your own. 1. Vanilla ice cream with sliced kiwis and strawberries on honey wheat bread. 2. Cherry-chocolate chip ice cream and whipped cream on sliced chocolate loaf cake. 3. Chocolate chip ice cream with sliced strawberries on white bread. 4. Pistachio ice cream and raspberries on honey wheat bread. 5. Vanilla ice cream and strawberry jam on cinnamon raisin bread.

LAUNCH A LITTLE LIBRARY How one family is bringing free books to a whole neighborhood BY ALICI A POT TER

Champlin, Minnesota

The Family The Schusters: Molly, Josh, Riley, age 8, and Rowan, 5

The Idea Even the most reluctant reader would find it hard to resist the charms of the dollhouse-size library that the Schuster family of Champlin, Minnesota, maintains in their front yard. Mounted on a four-foot post, the library holds 45 books, which anyone can borrow at no cost, so long as they either return them or swap in another one.

Molly received the library as a Mother’s Day gift two years ago from her husband, Josh. A woodworker friend crafted it, and Riley and Rowan, along with a crew of neighborhood pals, painted and decorated the outside. “I fell instantly in love with it,” says Molly. The Schusters aren’t alone in this endeavor: their little library is one of more than 25,000 registered with the nonprofit organization Little Free Library (LFL). With a mission to promote literacy and a love of reading, LFL has sparked a grassroots literary movement—little libraries can currently be found in all 50 states and more than 70 countries.

How It Works Each Monday, Molly and Riley stock their library with donated books for kids and adults, as well as magazines. While things are slower in winter, Molly estimates that a dozen people visit the library each week the rest of the year, plus a day care group comes on weekly field trips. The library even has its own Facebook page, with more than 200 followers.

Ready to start your own LFL? Find step-by-step instructions and other resources for new library builders at littlefreelibrary.org.

The library even has its own Facebook page, with more than 200 followers. “The community,” Molly says, “has been the best part of this adventure for me.” In addition to all the people she’s met around town, as a steward (LFL lingo for someone in charge of a library), Molly has connected with other little librarians across the country and internationally. Through Facebook groups, they’ve shared ideas, swapped books, and done podcasts. She’s even formed a friendship with a steward Down Under who has mailed Riley and Rowan two Australian-themed books.

Why Try It? The appeal is simple, says Rowan. “People like to get more books!” The project, Molly adds, has increased the whole family’s excitement for reading. “Now my husband, the kids, and I—we’re always trying new books.”

MY SON, ETHAN, returned

home from kindergarten one day, unloaded his backpack, and handed me a pink slip with the results of his compulsory school eye test. “This can’t be right,” I said. The pink slip said that Ethan had 20/30 eyesight through his right eye and 20/100 through his left. But there had been no previous indicators that our little guy needed glasses. Or had there?

AUGU S T 201 5

18

I thought back to the time his preschool teacher mentioned to my husband, Mat, and me that Ethan would blink hard a couple of times and wait before he answered a question about the calendar in the front of the room. And he was a tad clumsy. The pediatrician’s vision test and a screening at a specialist’s office confirmed that Ethan needed to wear glasses. His left eye was underperforming, and his

SO OFF WE WENT to the

optical shop. My eyes were tested, and to my surprise, I learned that my vision had veered away from 20/20. The optometrist suggested that a bit of magnification would help with reading. I’d be getting real glasses after all. Then Ethan and I tried on frames. Since we were doing

it together, it was a bonding experience instead of a glum, obligatory shopping trip. Ethan giggled when I tried on cat-eye frames that completely transformed my face and giant ones that looked silly balanced on my smallish nose. He chose a pair of russet-and-yellow frames that made him look like a rock star, but when I saw the exorbitant price tag, I diverted his attention to some reasonably priced wire rims with clip-on sunglasses and stems that seemed unbreakable, as demonstrated by the salesman who bent them back unnaturally. We were sold. I’ll never know if it was my solidarity or Ethan’s ability to see better that made the process go so smoothly. I do know that joining him in this new stage of his development sure made me a lot happier. A situation that seemed rather negative and out of my control ended up bringing us closer together. And as a bonus, I found that the stylish red-framed glasses I bought that day came in very handy a few years later, when the words on the pages of the telephone book started to look just a little bit blurry.

<

LOVE AND LENSES

right eye overcompensating. If he refused to wear glasses— as many 5-year-olds do, the doctor warned—he would need to wear a patch to regain his left eye’s function. That’s when I started to worry. If you’ve ever tried to coax a willful 5-year-old into doing something he’d rather not, you’ll understand why. What if Ethan refused to wear them? Or worse, what if other kids made fun of him? No one else in his class wore glasses. And with all the children his teachers had to watch, who’d make sure Ethan wore his glasses when I wasn’t around? I pictured scenarios in which my child would end up abandoning, losing, or breaking his glasses, and his eyesight would get worse instead of better. I felt helpless. Then I had an idea. I couldn’t head off every problem, but I could get things off to a good start. While Mat had worn glasses for years, I’d always enjoyed 20/20 vision. But now I’d get glasses, even if they just had clear lenses. Our picking out specs together might turn something dreaded into something fun. Sure, “misery loves company,” but happy experiences are also better when they’re shared.

SHIPSHAPE SAILBOATS CRAFT STYLING BY KELLY LADD; STYLING BY HEATHER ROME. BOY ON LEFT: MINI BODEN TEE, COTTON ON KIDS SWIM TRUNKS; RIGHT: THE CHILDREN’S PLACE SHIRT, TARGET SWIM TRUNKS

Our sturdy catamarans are virtually unsinkable, thanks to their pool noodle pontoons. 1 | With a pair of scissors (adults only), cut two 13-inch lengths from a pool noodle, angling the ends. Strap the pieces together, side by side, with three strips of electrical tape.

2 | For the sail, use pinking shears to cut a fabric triangle (our is 8½ by 8½ by 12 inches). Run a line of tacky glue along the back of one of the short sides. Place a foot-long dowel (ours is 3⁄16 inch wide) onto the glue so that the bottom end extends 2 inches past the fabric.

3 | For the boom, trim a bamboo skewer to 8 inches and glue it to the other short side of the sail, leaving a small space between the boom and the dowel mast. Let the glue dry. Slide the dowel between the pool noodles. Add a washi tape flag to the top. For a close-up photo of the ship, turn to page 78.

1 | swish sticks These fluttery wands call for a backyard parade. Cut 3-foot lengths from several streamer colors, then cut them in half lengthwise. Gather the pieces at one end. Place a drop of glue on the end of a painted dowel, stack the streamers on top, then securely attach them with a thumbtack. Glue a toy jewel on top of the tack.

2 | trunk show Dress up a tree or two for your next party. Start by wrapping a streamer around the trunk once and securing it to its end, not the tree, with double-sided tape. Continue wrapping until a few inches are covered, then secure the end with tape. Repeat with more colors.

3 | have a ball Create 3-D textured artwork with balled-up bits of crepe paper. Cut a rectangle from a cereal box and draw a simple image on the unprinted side.

4 Crumple and roll 1½-inchlong pieces of streamer into balls. Working on a section at a time, spread tacky glue onto the cardboard, then press the balls in place.

5

4 | pencil pals Our spiky-haired pencil topper is a welcome homework helper. Stack three 4½-inch lengths of streamer, then cut fringe into one long edge. Sandwich double-sided tape between the layers. Place tape on the bottom layer and roll the stack around the end of a pencil. Glue on googly eyes and a paper mouth.

5 | cool shades

For a sophisticated look, choose streamers in the same color family.

Match your lamp shade to your decor, for cheap. Starting at the bottom of a plain shade, simply wrap lengths of streamer around it, securing the ends with double-sided tape.

EASY PEASY FLAG IT

Rearrange and switch out the bottles to change the sound of your xylophone.

Washi tape turns plain paper clips into fun bookmarks in a flash. To make one, cut a 2-inch length of tape. Thread it through the smaller end of a paper clip. Fold the tape onto itself, sticky sides together. Trim the end with scissors.

recycling craft

MELODY MAKER There’s music hiding in your recycling bin! Tap empty glass bottles with a stick (or homemade mallet; see below) until you find six that produce a nice sound. Lay the bottles on an 8- by 24-inch piece of 2-inch-thick foam rubber (available at fabric shops), leaving an inch of space between them. Trace the outline of each bottle on the foam, then use scissors to cut a ¾-inch furrow in the middle of each outline. Nestle the bottles in the furrows. Play them by tapping them with a mallet.

MAKE A MALLET Start with a sturdy wooden dowel or chopstick, then add a head by wrapping one end with rubber bands or narrow strips of duct tape until you’ve made a ½- to ¾-inch ball. Or use a drill (an adult’s job) with a bit that’s the same diameter as the dowel and make a hole halfway through a cork, a wood ball, or a super ball. Attach the ball or cork to the dowel with wood glue.

Be Prepared. BEING PREPARED MEANS HAVING A PLAN TO: Avoid known allergens, know what symptoms to watch for, use an EpiPen® (epinephrine injection) Auto-Injector if a life-threatening (severe) allergic reaction occurs and get emergency medical help right away.

SEND THEM BACK TO SCHOOL WITH WHAT THEY KNOW More school nurses have been trained on EpiPen® Auto-Injector than any other epinephrine auto-injector. If your child has severe allergies, they may have been trained on one, too. In an emergency, you want to use the brand you’ve been trained on. So, ask your doctor for the brand more people are familiar with — EpiPen®.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF PATIENT INFORMATION Please read this information before using EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® Auto-Injector and each time you get a refill. Consult the Patient Information and Instructions for Use. You, your parent, a caregiver or others who may be in a position to administer EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® Auto-Injector, should know how to use it before you have an allergic emergency. This information does not take the place of talking with your health care professional about your medical condition or your treatment. If you have any questions, ask your health care professional. What is the most important information I should know about the EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr®? 1. EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr® contain a medicine used to treat allergic emergencies (anaphylaxis). Anaphylaxis can be life-threatening, can happen within minutes, and can be caused by stinging and biting insects, allergy injections, foods, medicines, exercise, or unknown causes. Symptoms of anaphylaxis may include: • trouble breathing • wheezing • hoarseness (changes in the way your voice sounds) • hives (raised reddened rash that may itch) • severe itching • swelling of your face, lips, mouth, or tongue • skin rash, redness, or swelling • fast heartbeat • weak pulse • feeling very anxious • confusion • stomach pain • losing control of urine or bowel movements (incontinence) • diarrhea or stomach cramps • dizziness, fainting, or “passing out” (unconsciousness) 2. Always carry your EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® with you because you may not know when anaphylaxis may happen. Talk to your health care professional if you need additional units to keep at work, school or other locations. Tell your family members, caregivers and others where you keep your EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® and how to use it before you need it. You may be unable to speak in an allergic emergency. 3. When you have an allergic emergency (anaphylaxis): • Use EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® right away. • Get emergency medical help right away. You may need further medical attention. You may need to use a second EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® if symptoms continue or recur. Only a health care professional should give additional doses of epinephrine if you need more than 2 injections for a single anaphylaxis episode.

What are EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr®? • EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr® are disposable, prefilled automatic injection devices (auto-injectors) used to treat lifethreatening, allergic emergencies including anaphylaxis in people who are at risk for or have a history of serious allergic emergencies. Each device contains a single dose of epinephrine. • EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr® are for immediate self (or caregiver) administration and do not take the place of emergency medical care. You should get emergency help right away after using EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr®. • EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr® are for people who have been prescribed this medicine by their health care professional. • The EpiPen® Auto-Injector (0.3 mg) is for patients who weigh 66 pounds or more (30 kilograms or more). • The EpiPen Jr® Auto-Injector (0.15 mg) is for patients who weigh about 33 to 66 pounds (15 to 30 kilograms). • It is not known if EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr® are safe and effective in children who weigh less than 33 pounds (15 kilograms). What should I tell my health care professional before using the EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr®? Before you use EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr®, tell your health care professional about all your medical conditions, but especially if you: • have heart problems or high blood pressure • have diabetes • have thyroid problems • have asthma • have a history of depression • have Parkinson’s disease • have any other medical conditions • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if epinephrine will harm your unborn baby. • are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known if epinephrine passes into your breast milk. Tell your health care professional about all the medicines you take including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements. Tell your health care professional of all known allergies. Especially tell your health care professional if you take certain asthma medicines. EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® and other medicines may affect each other, causing side effects. EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® may affect the way other medicines work, and other medicines may affect how EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® works. Use your EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® for treatment of anaphylaxis as prescribed by your health care professional, regardless of your medical conditions or the medicines you take. What are the possible side effects of the EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr®? EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr® may cause serious side effects. • The EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® should only

be injected into the middle of your outer thigh (upper leg). Do not inject the EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® into your: • veins • buttocks • fingers, toes, hands, or feet If you accidentally inject EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® into any other part of your body, go to the nearest emergency room right away. Tell the health care professional where on your body you received the accidental injection. If you have certain medical conditions, or take certain medicines, your condition may get worse or you may have longer lasting side effects when you use your EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr®. Talk to your health care professional about all your medical conditions. Common side effects of EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr® include: • fast, irregular or “pounding” heartbeat • sweating • headache • weakness • shakiness • paleness • feelings of over excitement, nervousness or anxiety • dizziness • nausea or vomiting • breathing problems These side effects may go away with rest. Tell your health care professional if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away. These are not all the possible side effects of the EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr®. For more information, ask your health care professional or pharmacist. Call your health care professional for medical advice about side effects. General information about the safe and effective use of EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr®: Medicines are sometimes prescribed for purposes other than those listed in a Patient Information Leaflet. Do not use the EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® for a condition for which it was not prescribed. Do not give your EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® to other people. Important Information • If an accidental injection happens, get medical help right away. ANA DZIENGEL Ana is the magic-maker behind the kids-andcrafts blog Babble Dabble Do. Her training as an industrial designer shows through in her projects (drinking-straw geodesic domes, D.I.Y. mosaic magnets), which inspire kids to explore color, design, and engineering. She lives in the San Fernando Valley with her husband, JR, and kids, Alonzo, age 8, Clara, 6, and Leon, 2. HER FAVORITE MATERIAL “Liquid watercolors, because the color is so concentrated. It’s like food coloring, but better.”

PREFERRED PROJECTS “I like activities that cross art with engineering; that’s essentially what design is. And as long as the kids are asking Why? and How does it work?, it’s an educational experience.” A KEY TO CRAFTING HARMONY “I do the projects alongside my kids so that I can make one of my own without pressuring them to make theirs look a certain way.”

ON CREATIVITY AND KIDS “Don’t solve your children’s problems for them. I want my kids to be able to rely on their imaginations, to dream up their own solutions, and to have the confidence that comes from making stuff—seeing what works and being comfortable with things not working.”

1 | Choose the placement of your holes on a hardwood block (ours is 1½ inches tall). 2 | Cut plastic-coated craft wire into several lengths, from 12 to 18 inches long. 3 | With a drill bit the same diameter as the craft wire, drill holes about ½ inch deep into the block (adults only). Sand any rough edges. 4 | Have your child place one end of a wire into the block with a dab of glue and thread on a few wood beads. She can shape the wire as she likes, then insert the other end in another hole with more glue. Repeat until the holes are filled.

From a magazine, cut out images—half of a person or an object (such as a piece of fruit, as we show) or entire vehicles or buildings—and glue them to sheets of drawing paper. Put out colored pencils or markers.

Encourage your little artist to complete the half images by adding legs, for instance, or a fish tail, or doors and windows. Suggest drawing a landscape for the cars and buildings. Your child can glue on more images and add a title, if desired.

Cut word balloons and text boxes from white paper. Use them to turn the collage into a comic book–style story.

INGREDIENTS

PEANUT PASTA PEPPERS

1½ cups small pasta shells ¼ cup plus 1 tbsp. smooth natural peanut butter 2 tbsp. low-sodium soy sauce 3 tbsp. cider vinegar 1 tsp. hot sauce (we like Frank’s RedHot) 2 cups cooked chicken, chopped 2 medium carrots, grated 3 scallions, finely chopped ¼ cup cilantro, finely chopped, plus more for garnish ¼ tsp. salt 6 medium bell peppers

Here, bell peppers serve as the crunchy, edible vessel for a nutty noodle salad that’s delicious warm or chilled. No time in the oven—and very little on the stove top—makes this recipe ideal for hot summer evenings.

ACTIVE TIME: 20 MIN. TOTAL TIME: 20 MIN. MAKES: 6 SERVINGS

1. Cook the pasta according to package directions, reserving 3 tbsp. of the cooking water. 2. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, whisk together the peanut butter, soy sauce, vinegar, and hot sauce. Add the chicken, carrots, scallions, cilantro, and salt, and toss to coat. Add the pasta shells and the reserved cooking water, and toss until evenly coated. 3. Trim off and discard the top of each pepper, then cut out the seeds and core. Without making a hole, cut a slice from the bottom so that the pepper will stand. Evenly distribute the filling among the peppers, mounding it. Sprinkle with more cilantro before serving. TIEDYE! LET’S

Artist and tie-dye expert Shabd Simon-Alexander shares her secrets to creating beautiful shirts with little mess and no stress.

AUGU S T 201 5

38

Here’s a project that should top your family’s summer to-do list: tie-dye. It’s a perfect activity to fill a lazy afternoon in the yard, culminating with a “wow” moment when the tied shirt is unfurled. If you’re worried it’s too complicated or messy to tackle with kids, don’t be. It’s virtually impossible to tie-dye incorrectly, and with these single-color designs, it’s easy to keep things tidy. I’ve been teaching tie-dye classes for years and selling my creations in stores all over the world. Here, I’ve included tying and binding ideas for five patterns. I’ve also given my formula for a fabric dye bath that creates more durable and longer-lasting colors, but if you’d rather keep it simple, you can always use a premixed dye and follow the package instructions. Most of all, don’t forget to have fun. Try to see mistakes as opportunities. Some of my favorite designs have come from happy accidents! FIRST, TIE YOUR SHIRT For the best results, use a prewashed and dried 100 percent cotton T-shirt. Gather up some rubber bands and follow the directions for your chosen design to prepare a shirt for the dye.

Even very young kids can help make this cosmic design. First, wet the shirt and lay it flat. With your fingers, scrunch and wrinkle the fabric, gathering it into a tight disk. Wrap several rubber bands around the disk. The tighter you bind it, the more white there will be in the final shirt.

<

dotty dots

The size of the polka dots on this shirt depends on the size of the beads or beans you use to make them. Gather a handful of plastic beads or dried beans. Cut plastic wrap into squares that are about four times larger than the beads or beans. Place a bean or bead inside the shirt, then place a piece of plastic wrap on top of the shirt. Working with just the front layer of the shirt, wrap a rubber band tightly around the plasticand shirt-covered bead or bean, as shown. Repeat to make more dots. Wet the tee before dyeing it.

<

sunburst

This spiral pattern will have you and your kids doing the twist. Soak a shirt with water and lay it flat. Choose a spot in the center of the shirt, between the armpits; with your thumb and forefinger, press down and twist the fabric clockwise. Try to keep the resulting folds at approximately the same height, creating a shape like a flat cinnamon roll. Wrap the shape tightly with rubber bands, as shown. The tighter you bind the shirt, the more white there will be in the design.

Tie-dye doesn’t always mean groovy spirals and circles—you can make straight-line stripes, too. Wet a shirt and lay it flat. Starting at one side, gather the tee to create accordionlike folds that run vertically from neck to hem. Wrap a rubber band tightly around the shirt. For more stripes, add rubber bands as shown.

<

sailor stripes

This circle shirt couldn’t be simpler to create. Lay your tee flat. At the center of the tee between the armpits, pinch just the top layer of the tee. Pull the fabric up into a point, letting the rest of the shirt fall away. Smooth the fabric down evenly from your pinched point, creating a skinny cone shape. Wrap a rubber band tightly around it. Move the rubber-banded ring up or down to make the circle smaller or larger. For a wider line, wrap a few bands around the same spot. Or create a bull's-eye by adding bands above and below the first one. Wet the tee before dyeing it.

A recent study found that young kids learn 1,000 rare words at the dinner table compared to 143 from having storybooks read aloud.

Looking for a fun way to help build memory skills? This cooperative word game fosters powers of recollection—and helps pass the time when your gang is stuck in traffic. > The first player says, “We’re going on a trip and we need to pack one ...” and then names an item (“suitcase,” for instance). > The second player repeats the statement and the first item, then adds another: “And two pairs of underwear.” > The next player adds to the list, and so on. If a player cannot recall the entire list, other players can offer hints. If no one remembers, empty that imaginary bag (and your memory) and start again.

PRINTING WITH SOLAR POWER

1 | Using loops of tape on the reverse side, secure construction paper to a table in a sunny spot outdoors (or do it inside by a sunny window).

A creative project helps children understand the awe-inspiring effects of the August sun.

2 | Lay objects on the paper. Use more tape loops to secure lightweight items (such as the plastic forks shown above).

Creating these prints, you’re witnessing the power of ultraviolet (UV) rays—the same rays of sunlight that can burn unprotected skin. When the light hits the exposed areas of the construction paper, the UV rays cause a chemical reaction in the paper’s colored dye. This reaction breaks down the dye and diminishes its brightness.

Million-year-old Mono Lake has no outlet, so all the salts and minerals that have flowed into it over the millennia remain, making it two and a half times as salty as the ocean. Scientists estimate that the space rock that hit the earth here 50,000 years ago was traveling about 26,000 miles per hour. It left a dent, to say the least. My grandmother used to keep a “mad money” fund for fun things she wanted to buy, so in her honor, I created a “mad dash” travel fund. My bank automatically moves $50 a month from my main account into this special account, which I reserve strictly for spur-of-the-moment trips. I also deposit into it loose change and bills we collect in a jar in the kitchen. It adds up fast!

Following specific airlines or travel websites on Twitter can be a great way to learn about cheap flights, especially if you’re willing to be flexible, as companies often use Twitter to promote their lastminute discounts. You can also try the “Today’s Best Fares” section of Fly.com (a Travelzoo property), which highlights the lowest round-trip rates to popular destinations.

Find Rooms on the Go

If you hit the road without arranging a place to stay, you can locate rooms and make a reservation right from your smartphone with apps such as HotelTonight, Booking.com, and Last Minute Travel Deals. Some let you sort by price and find exclusive deals, even at the eleventh hour.

As host of a family travel TV show, I spend so much time exploring and sharing fun destinations with viewers that my own family’s vacation planning is often left to the last minute. Fortunately, these simple strategies make it easy to hit the road on short notice.

Travel agents, such as those at AAA, are some of my best friends! Why? Because they’re well connected to a range of travel vendors and often privy to specials that might not be apparent when I’m searching online to book a trip on my own.

The AARP Travel Center, run by Expedia, includes a section on last-minute deals, including flights, hotel rooms, and packages (expediaaarp.com). So ask an AARP member you’re traveling with to check it out. If you’re extra lucky, Grammy might even help with the tab!

old the Jersey jokes, forget the MTV series, and set aside the memory of Hurricane Sandy. The Jersey Shore is so much more than all of those. To get the real scoop on this venerable 127-mile oceanfront mecca, we asked some true insiders— parents who’ve vacationed “down the shore” for years (and, in some cases, generations)—to share their favorite family classics, from midway rides to nature strolls to those irresistible boardwalk treats.

You’ll find more Victorian architecture in this historic onesquare-mile beach town than anywhere else in the country, but for a true marvel of living history, just follow Pilgrim Pathway north until you reach the soaring Great Auditorium and the colorful “city” of 114 canvas tent homes that surrounds it. The first tents were erected in 1869 when

the town was founded as a Methodist camp meeting ground, and they’ve been occupied (and added to) every summer since. Your kids will marvel at the colorful awnings, tiny front porches, and personal touches, such as picket fences and clipped boxwood hedges, just a few blocks from the Atlantic Ocean. oceangrove.org > LGP

Beach is beloved for its lack of any of those things. The pristine barrier island is home to dense forests, rolling dunes, ever-changing tidal marshes, and 10 miles of beautiful beach perfect for crabbing and surf casting. It also offers many guided nature programs for kids and families (islandbeachnature programs.org). Pack a lunch and leave early; the number of cars allowed on the island is limited. sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline. But it’s the history that makes it truly unique. At Fort Hancock, visitors can climb the 95 steps of the oldest active lighthouse in the country (Sandy Hook Light celebrated its 250th anniversary last year); tour the remains of numerous gun batteries, some dating back to the late 1800s; and visit a Cold War–era Nike missile site. BEST BOARDWALK

Ocean City Boardwalk It may not be New Jersey’s most famous boardwalk (that honor goes to MTV’s Jersey Shore-ified Seaside Heights), but Ocean City is where families rule the rides.
