Welcome Aboard W
elcome aboard your flight today with Skippers. The summer weather has arrived, enabling us to enjoy the sunshine. Regardless of the weather, our dedicated crews will make your journey as comfortable as possible. Skippers has commenced Monday, Wednesday and Friday services to Onslow, which is the home of the large oil and gas Wheatstone Project. There is a lot of infrastructure being carried out in the town and it has a newly completed $40 million airport. Skippers – in conjunction with St Ives and Lanfranchi mines – have commenced Monday to Friday services direct to Kambalda, with a very competitive $190 one-way fare. We expect this service to be well patronised. The Esperance racing season has just commenced and Skippers will be providing charter flights for jockeys and racing personnel, as we have done in previous seasons. Motive Travel is also promoting a number of tours involving sporting events. Changes to our regular passenger services mean there are now two direct flights, Mondays and Fridays, to Mount Magnet, which have been well received. This has been made possible thanks to the community sharing Ramelius Resources’ crew-change flights. There is also the current Wednesday flight via Meekatharra and Wiluna. Discover West Holidays has a promotion under way that’s predominately focused on Monkey Mia and Shark Bay. There’s also a holiday promotion in conjunction with Everywhere Travel Centre as well as Carnarvon Travel Centre that’s focusing on Carnarvon and Perth, and both are receiving positive results. Skippers Kimberley Air Service routes to and from Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek are being well-patronised by the local community. They provide a fast, comfortable journey to these remote locations. Skippers’ Road Transport arm continues to be very active in the resources industry. See www.skippers.net.au Ocean Beach Hotel is offering great deals on accommodation right on North Cottesloe Beach. See www.obh.com.au . Ocean Beach Backpackers also has great facilities right on the beach. See www.oceanbeachbackpackers.com.au Burswood Car Rentals has a guaranteed pick-up and delivery service, which can be ordered online or directly with them. ‘TIS THE SEASON As the weather heats up and Summer parties dot the calendar, music festivals also kick off across the country, sprinkling that feeling of celebration over party-goers from east to west. One of the favourites each year is Future Music Festival, and the 2015 lineup is worth getting excited about. By: Aly Eveille
T
he earliest music festival in Australia is thought to have been held in 1972. Since then, they have come a long way from single-stage set-ups on dusty bushland. Aussie festivals now resemble that of their international counterparts, with globally celebrated line-ups, astonishing pyrotechnics and unconventional music fans turning up by the thousands. Since 2006, Future Music Festival has been known as one of the elite dance festivals in Australia, hosting names such as Fatboy Slim, Empire of the Sun and The Chemical Brothers. And with 2015 upon us, the event is preparing to rock crowds like never before with headliners The Prodigy, Avicii, Drake, Afrojak, Knife Party, Example, Nero, Die Antwood and more. Event organisers said Future Music embraces every city it travels to and, luckily for Aussie fans, that includes the eastern capital cities of Brisbane and Sydney, the south’s Adelaide and Melbourne, and Perth in the west. Mushroom Group project manager, Samantha Clode, said that in planning 2015 they put the festival’s vision under the microscope, taking a step back to look at how it’s grown and focusing on how to make it even better. “We’ve sharpened our line-up and we’re focusing each stage on

more diverse genres, from dance music to underground sounds, and we’re bringing artists who have dominated the biggest festivals in the world,” she said. “Find a hotter festival line-up, we dare you!” Among the international DJs hitting the decks Down Under is Blasterjaxx – a Dutch DJ duo made up of Thom Jongkind and Idir Makhlaf – who produce electro-house music. They have played at renowned events such as Ultra Music Festival in Croatia, Miami and South Africa, and Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas. Thom and Idir said they try to do

something new at every big show to surprise the audience. While their plans for the Future Music tour are currently under wraps, the guys promised they will give the audience the best time of their life. “We love to play different genres of music to let the crowd hear something other than dance music over and over,” Thom said. “For instance, we play some hip-hop, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and other types of music that can then be combined with dance music. It’s all about trying to give the crowd the best time of their life.” To make it even better, Thom and Idir love Australia. “We could go on and on about Australia, because it’s a great place,” Thom said. “But we really love it because there’s such a great vibe and the people are really nice. We also know that Aussies can party like there’s no tomorrow and we love the energy that comes with it!” Regarding the years to come, organisers are tight-lipped about plans. “I can’t say for sure, but 2015 marks our first year in Singapore ... so hopefully we will continue to expand and feed everyone’s love for dance music,” Samantha said. “Come prepared with comfy clothes, plenty of phone charge, money for food and drinks, sunscreen, and a cheery attitude. It’s a day for partying, making new friends, enjoying your favourite artists, discovering new ones and having an absolute ball.” See futuremusicfestival.com. au to keep up-to-date with new artist announcements or to buy tickets, which start from $140 + booking fee. The event is open to patrons 18+ years only.

PAR ENT S’ GUIDE TO
SCHOOLIES With Schoolies Week now over for another year, we found some advice for parents with children graduating in November 2015, so you’re one step ahead when they start to discuss their plans.
A
ustralia’s end-of-school rite of passage has been undergoing significant change in recent years. No longer is “Schoolies” synonymous with pub crawls at the Gold Coast. Instead, overseas holidays with a focus on cultural immersion have been trending. A survey of 118 travel agents conducted over three years (2011-2013) by Unleashed Travel revealed 64.4 per cent of enquiries for Schoolies holidays were for island destinations, such as Fiji, compared with 30.5 per cent of enquiries for the Gold Coast and Byron Bay. Unleashed Travel is a provider of overseas travel packages for Australian school leavers, which it refers to as Grad Trips, rather than Schoolies. Their current 2014/15 Grad Trip packages include Fiji, Nepal, Cambodia, Bali, Thailand, Vietnam, Vanuatu and Europe, with a focus on fun and sun, and options for cultural exchanges, alcohol-free travel and volunteering. Unleashed Travel CEO, Jot Lynas, who has supervised more than 3000 students on their trips, said, “Graduating students have become more discerning and expect higher quality travel experiences. Grad Trips convey this change in preferences – and while there is still a focus on partying and social experiences, there is also an emphasis on cultural and new experiences.” There are a plethora of school-leaver travel options on the market, which might leave parents feeling confused, so Jot has created a checklist of what these packages should include:
1. Controlled alcohol consumption: Look for travel packages that prohibit students from bringing their own

assisted by “The Red Frogs” support network.
Volunteer trip to Cambodia Fiji
4.
Briefing sessions: Opt for a package that offers briefing sessions and information nights with parents and teens prior to their trip, as well as for the teens on arrival.
5.
Pre-arranged activities: Look for travel providers that organise day activities and host their own exclusive parties at night, so there’s less chance of the school leavers venturing out on their own and potentially putting themselves in danger.
6. No Toolies: Ensure the travel package or destination is strictly for graduating students.
alcohol and spirits, and check that the accommodation or resort doesn’t serve shots.
2.
Mandatory travel insurance: Choose a travel provider where travel insurance is mandatory, so you know your teen will be covered in the case of sickness, injury, theft or loss of luggage.
3.
A responsible environment: Look for packages that are supervised, while still allowing students freedom and independence. Unleashed Travel’s Grad Trips have an adult-tostudent ratio of 1:7, with its First Aid-certified crew on call 24/7 and
7.
Code of conduct: It’s important that school leavers understand the type of behaviour that’s acceptable, and the consequences of unacceptable behaviour. Check that the travel provider sets and enforces a code of conduct, and that the code is communicated in pre-trip information nights, in the students’ travel kits and in briefings during the trip.
8.
An all-inclusive package: Where the currency is foreign, it can be easy to lose track of spending. Opt for a package that includes flights, accommodation, some meals and planned activities, to avoid your teen getting stung with too many additional costs while overseas, and giving you the bill when returning home!

Never been to Greece? Think flowing Ouzo, beach parties, seafood, and much, much more. Words and photos by: Aly Eveille
GREECE is the word
H
aving never visited Greece, I didn’t know what to expect, but in the end it proved to be the pinnacle of my entire trip through Europe, and a welcome change of pace. From the minute our plane hit the tarmac, the entire cabin roared with cheers and applause! That confirmed it – we had arrived in the Cyclades, Mykonos, to be exact. Mykonos is one of 227 inhabited islands in the Aegean Sea. It has a reputation for its nightlife, but the food, scenery and culture is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Mykonos Town, or Chora, as it’s known to locals, is the heart of

snooze on a sun bed and swim all day, then dance on tabletops with the masses that flock in at night.
Hiring a quad bike to get around the island is the best thing you can do. It’ll cost about 20 Euros ($30) per day, and will give you the freedom to see different beaches, bars, cafes, and townships. Book in advance if you can but, if not, head to Hercules Car & Bike Rental in Chora – they are cheap and have a huge range. You can book anything from quad bikes to a five-star dune buggy, and they come in all colours of the rainbow.
Other beach clubs worth seeing are at Super Paradise Beach and, as the name suggests, it outshines Paradise Beach on every level. These are more luxurious beach clubs with a slightly older crowd and milliondollar yachts anchored off-shore, close enough so the sounds from the DJ pump over the ocean and on to their private party decks. The crowd is friendly and the Greek locals are side-splittingly funny. There’s no shortage of entertainment in Mykonos but what happens there stays there, so you’ll have to go and see for yourself!
If it’s parties you’re after, Mykonos is it. The younger crowd heads down to Club Tropicana on Paradise Beach, where you can
Mykonos. Massive cruise liners dock so tourists can explore for the day, and those staying out of town zoom in on their quad bikes and scooters to do the same. People wander through the colourful narrow walkways, popping into little shops for souvenirs, handmade leather sandals and jewellery, or a delicious jam-packed Nutella and strawberry crepe. Little Venice is a short walk away and is the place to go for the best seafood in Mykonos. We grabbed a table right on the water at Katerina’s Restaurant, where the waves were splashing over our feet. The iconic Mykonos Windmills

Our next stop was Santorini, a three-hour ferry ride from Mykonos. You often see photos of Santorini but it doesn’t prepare you for seeing it yourself. As the ferry pulls into port,
Santorini is above you – about 400 metres above you, in fact. The scenery is other-worldly and the ocean simply goes on forever. Our quaint little hotel was in Fira, the capital of Santorini. We had a [Continues on page 18]

Quad bikes are a must in Santorini too, and there are a lot more road rules than in Mykonos, but if you miss out on seeing the many different beaches, you will regret it. In one day we visited Kamari Beach, where all the sand is pitch black, and Red Beach, which is made up of pebbles as bright as the outback. We made our way down windy roads to little rocky coves that had cafes on the shoreline, and we also stopped in Oia to check out the shops and bars in the village. According to locals, this is the place to catch that famous sunset, but we also had a great view in Fira. A few words of advice on Santorini: stay longer than one day; take advantage of the very cheap authentic Greek gyros; and if the sun sets at 8pm get a table for dinner around 7pm or you’ll miss it! The final stop on our Greek adventure was Athens. I’d been
told Athens wasn’t anything special but was surprised at the amount of culture and history I was standing on. For the few days I was there, people on the street would remember me and ask how I was. There are no other people like the Greeks – happy, friendly and fun. We visited the Acropolis and the ruins surrounding it and were dumbfounded by its history. Get to the ruins early if you’re visiting Greece from June to August, as it gets extremely crowded and hot after about 10am. The view from the top of the Acropolis was sensational. There were old white buildings and vibrant green trees as far as the eye could see. It’s not hard to see why they built temples for the gods on that hill. The ruined amphitheatres and temples are amazing, as is wandering through the city streets seeing ancient ruins from more than 2000 years ago. The Plaka is a buzzing shopping hub where you can chat to the locals and, of course, eat. If you don’t mind a drink, you’ll love the free shooters of Ouzo you are offered after a meal in Athens. Apparently they are used to aid digestion after eating, and we weren’t complaining! See www.visitgreece.gr for more information. n

he FIFO Housemate website was designed to make it easy to browse rooms and see what’s offered in the area in which you wish to live. All you need to do is visit www.fifohousemate.com.au and start searching, as there are hundreds of rooms to choose from at the click of a button. There is also a section where you can create your own FIFO Housemate profile, so people with rooms available can contact you while you are away. FIFO Housemate is a practical option if you want to leave your valuables somewhere safe while you are working away. And you’ll have peace of mind knowing that somebody is at home with your car and other possessions. Many FIFOs have found that the website has been helpful if they are going through a break-up and need somewhere to move to quickly and easily while they sort things out. Leading mental health organisations have also endorsed share-house accommodation as a mentally healthy option, so workers aren’t coming home to empty houses during their R&R. FIFO Housemate can also be great for those who are trying to save money. Several FIFOs have negotiated cheaper rates while they are working away, are splitting bills or using short stay accommodation options. Finally, FIFO Housemate is a great option for those who need to relocate for work, as you can organise a room quickly and easily near the job. Check out houses near the beach, penthouses on the river, or rooms for rent near the airport by visiting www.fifohousemate.com.au and creating a profile. Samsung Galaxy S5 – The Leader
CLOSE CALL
Due for a new phone? We’ve reviewed five top-selling models released in 2014, to help you decide which one best suits your needs. By: Zinzan Clements HTC One M8 – Music to Your Ears The new HTC One M8 is targeting music lovers via its powerful front-facing speakers with HTC optimised audio software. HTC is promising that the speakers will last longer and enhance all media audio.
Apple iPhone 6 – Catching Up The iPhone 6 is playing catch up and Apple has also released its first big phone, the iPhone 6 Plus (same phone, bigger screen). The iPhone 6 is the only dual-core phone surveyed here and has the slowest speed rating (compared with the other four phones). It also suffers from the second-worst talk time (before the battery dies) and the worst battery stand-by time (compared with the other phones here). On the flipside, the new iPhone is super thin and super light, with a width of 6.7 millimetres and a weight of only 129 grams – less than a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder! Disturbingly though, some owners have reported that the new iPhone's aluminium body has actually bent in their pocket. Apple recently responded to these complaints, describing them as “extremely rare” and going on to say that “iPhones are designed, engineered and manufactured to be both beautiful and sturdy”. The iPhone 6 also has some cool features, such as time-lapse recording and super slow-mo but it’s on the expensive side, with an $870 price tag for the 6, and $1000 for the 6 Plus.
28
Issue 37
Apart from the pumping new sound, the M8 body is constructed from one solid piece of aluminium. Featuring a curved back and a polished glass screen, the phone’s design has won rave reviews. The downside is its surprisingly weak fourmegapixel rear camera. By comparison, the iPhone 6 has eight megapixels, and the Samsung Galaxy S5 has 16.
Sony Xperia Z3 – Water Babies The new Sony Xperia Z3 is an update of the popular Sony Xperia Z2. This time around, Sony has improved the water protection, giving it the highest waterproof rating of any smartphone on the market. Sony is working on integrating their new phones into household entertainment, and the Z3 is the first phone that lets you play PlayStation games on your phone via a controller. The company recently moved into the “wearables” industry, releasing a range of

Nokia Lumia 930 – Not Android, Not Apple Windows has been in the smartphone market for a while now with its dedicated Windows phones, but it’s having trouble securing a slice of the market. The Lumia 930 has the worst talk time of all the phones in this article, and is also the heaviest and thickest, coming in at nearly a centimetre thick. While its 20-megapixel camera is solid on paper, it lacks basic features such as digital image stabilisation and HDR, which are something every other phone offers. Redeeming qualities include the Lumia 930’s large standard internal storage (32GB) and wireless charging. Simply place the phone on the charging mat and the electricity transfers without the need for a cable. n

a few seconds to think it over. You never know where that email came from or if the email is redirecting you to a fake site to capture your login credentials. It’s a lot safer to close that email and open up the bank’s website through your own browsing activity to look for an alert or an offer.
D N A E F A S
d n u o s Thanks to technological advances with web and mobile applications, banking has never been easier or more convenient. But the fact we tend to use human-friendly passwords and easy methods to remember them, creates a unique vulnerability. By: Edward Stachyra.
I
ndividuals aren’t the only ones susceptible to password leaks. Large corporations and governments are often victims to account hacking too, such as Domino’s Pizza and Adobe software. When large-scale password leaks make headlines, it demonstrates how we are all vulnerable and how vital it is to change our passwords often. It is even better to use additional authentication methods. Credit card information is generally safe while shopping online, due to Payment Card Industry rules, because online merchants are not allowed to store credit card information in clear text on their servers. However, if you were using the same user password credentials across multiple websites and financial institutions, one would never really need access to your card numbers to gain the ability to conduct financial transactions. They could simply hack into one of the other websites you use and steal your password from there. Here are five simple rules to help protect yourself on the web and your mobile devices. 1. Do not use the same password for more than one website. Always use special care with your passwords
30

that involve financial websites. Do not use the same password you use to login into Facebook, because even those websites are at risk of being compromised. Many studies have confirmed that users of social and online game sites will use the same user credentials as they do for their financial institutions. For example, in 2009 the online gaming site RockYou was compromised with a leak of around 32 million passwords that were being kept in clear text. The leak in itself may not have been the only problem. RockYou account holders should also be concerned about their passwords on other personal accounts. 2. Never trust links in your email. Hyperlinks that arrive in your email can redirect you to where the sender wants you to go. It is the sender’s version of reality for a website, not yours. Make a practice of being distrustful of your email inbox in general. Email phishing attempts can be so well disguised that it can be difficult to tell the difference between phishing and a legitimate email. If you receive an email from your bank to confirm a suspected login activity or unauthorised purchase, give yourself
www.inflightmagazine.com.au
3. Use two-step authentication for websites that offer it. Free email sites such as Gmail and Hotmail offer two-step authentication via SMS/Text, so why not take advantage of it? Two-step authentication requires a second authentication system when logging in from new devices or browsers the site does not recognise. It also provides you with peace of mind, as it’s nearly impossible for someone to hack your email account if you use two-step authentication via SMS/Text. 4. Always set a password on your mobile phone or tablet. Use passwords for all work and personal mobile devices and ensure your children are doing the same. Make sure the person who finds your lost or stolen phone or tablet does not get access to your personal information as well.
5. Install a find-my-phone app on your mobile phone or tablet. Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android both offer ways to find lost phones and even erase your data remotely if your phone is lost. Apple offers the “Find iPhone App” in the App Store for free. If you use the same iCloud, you will see all of your devices on a map with a single iCloud login. Google offers the Android Device Manager for any device linked to your Google Account. You can use location services to view your devices on Google Maps. You must perform a few extra steps on the Android phone itself to allow Android Device Manager to remotely lock or erase the device. Getting out of debt doesn’t have to be a struggle. You can change your debt and begin to enjoy creating money in your life. Here are some effective tools to get you started, from business mentor Simone Milasas. Know how much it costs to run your life To get out of debt and start to prosper, first sit down and write out exactly what it costs to run your life each month. Include fun stuff, like going out, clothes and holidays. You want to know the amount you need to have an enjoyable life!
You can keep it in the bank, in cash, or buy things with intrinsic wealth that will grow in value, such as gold or silver.
Next, add up your debts, and work out how much you would need to pay monthly to have it paid off in 12 months (or two years if it’s more than $20,000).
Money follows joy, not the other way around Many people say, “I will be happy when I have x amount of money.” The truth is, much like you, money prefers to hang out with happy people. What brings you joy? What do you love to do? Are you doing it?
Add the two amounts together, then add 20 per cent just for fun. Don’t freak out if the amount seems like a lot. You now know the amount that truly reflects your requirements for living a life you’d like. With that information, you can now shoot for your target. Be willing to have money Do you like to spend money or to have money? When the dollars come in, where do you put them first? Do you invest or send them straight out to bills and debts? Being willing to have money is essential to getting out of debt. Put away 10 per cent of everything you earn One of the simplest ways to begin having money is to create a 10 per cent “Honouring of You” account. Take 10 per cent of all money that comes in, put it away and never touch it.
32
Issue 37
By honouring yourself with the 10 per cent, you are creating the energy of having money in your life and not just spending it.
solutions to money problems, you will have the ability to be creative and have fun with generating money. Here are a few questions you can ask to get you in the “possibilities” zone: What can I add to my life today that will create more money right away? What else is possible that I haven’t considered before? What fun can I have today that will invite money to come play with me? Can I have the money now, please?
What if you made a commitment to spend one hour of every day and one whole day a week doing something you truly love to do? Try it and notice what changes in your life. What could make you money easily? What is easy and fun for you to do that you think has no value? The reason you think it has no value is because you think anyone can do it! But it’s simply not true that anyone can do it. You can, however, and what if you could make money from it too? Take a notebook and write down the things that are easy and fun for you to do. Keep the notebook as an ideas book and keep adding to it. Ask more questions If you are willing to look at possibilities for creating money, rather than looking for

Bin your
Budgeting is a waste of time, according to income-acceleration coach, international speaker and author, Pat Mesiti. He suggests four alternatives for boosting your wealth significantly in 2015.
P
at Mesiti has seen countless people start a new year with the same idealistic resolutions, without really understanding how to change their circumstances. Pat believes that one of the reasons people repeatedly fail to change their financial circumstances is that they focus on the wrong path. “Too many people think that wealth is just about reining in expenses and working hard,” he said. “In actual fact, you can’t shrink your way to wealth, you need to expand it. It’s very important to look at where you can make more money outside your job. There are plenty of ways; it’s just a matter of finding the right one.” Pat believes that extra streams of income make people prosperous much faster than reining in their spending and waiting for a pay rise. Here are four of the alternative streams of income Pat has seen work well for the people he’s coached. 1) Property People are often scared off by the high prices of property, but what you have to remember is that property is cyclical and it will always bring a return. The important thing is to know how and where to buy. 2) The internet The internet is a potential gold mine. People make an absolute fortune online buying and

selling websites, in online real estate, and through marketing. There are so many great ideas to create wealth online if you know the right strategies. And the best thing about it is that you’re now dealing with a global marketplace. 3) The stock market The stock market will always go up and down, but eventually it will bring you a return. If you are strategic and taught well, you can make money. Don’t be afraid of the stock market, it’s not gambling for adults, you just need to learn how to create the stock market, not predict it. 4) Monetise your skills People forget they can monetise their own expertise and knowledge. Learn how to leverage money from what you know. Can a gardener become a millionaire for his trade? Yes, just look at Jim Penman from Jim’s Mowing! Too many people believe they can budget their way to wealth, but if you look at the back stories of some of the richest people in the world, you will find that’s not really true. Stop looking at how much you can save by skipping your daily coffee and find your outrageous stream of income. Then you can start down that path to true prosperity, just like they did.

WA EXPLORATION
A DVERTOR I A L
M A R K E T U P D AT E
M
any of you who fly with Skippers will be doing so because you are associated with exploration or mining in regional Western Australia. For those who aren’t, the town you are flying to is probably highly mindful of – if not dependent upon – the revenue brought in by this important sector. A drop-off in employment opportunities in the exploration sector commenced in August 2012 and a recovery to the record participation rates of 2011/12 is nowhere in sight, perhaps. A further decline in participation commenced in June 2014, with the beginning of a sustained collapse in the iron ore price. These trends are illustrated well in the Resources Safety Department’s (RSD) graph of exploration participation numbers (pictured), compiled from monthly working hours submitted mandatorily to the department by exploration companies operating in WA. Of note in the graph is the seasonality of exploration, with participation rates plummeting in January each year, and a common decline annually over the budgeting period of June-July. What is of most interest to Digirock, and possibly
other companies who support the industry, is the way company revenue mimics the peaks and troughs of the RSD participation graphs. Despite the obvious decline in exploration participation from May 2014, which was also well-reflected in Digirock revenue data, Digirock’s September-November 2014 data suggests participation rates picked up to levels not seen since November 2012. This is highly encouraging news for the sector, and hopefully
RSD data for the period – when published – will corroborate this trend. At the time of writing, the Aussie dollar was back down to 83c against the Greenback, which means higher effective income from commodity sales by producers, with the onflow effect of higher profits and more money for exploration. We will have to wait and see what the 2015 exploration season brings. See digirock.com.au. n

FIGHT MINING
FATIGUE
Fatigue is one of the biggest causes of injuries on mine sites. Fortunately, it’s also one of the most preventable. After working with miners for more than a decade, Hilti’s civil, energy and infrastructure manager, Ryan Jones, has compiled a list of the three most common sources of fatigue in mining and his tips for minimising them.
1. Drilling Rotary hammer and combi-hammer drilling over long periods causes fatigue because your hand and arm muscles tire, leaving you at risk of the tool dangerously rotating in your hand. In mines, because you’re dealing with a range of different rock types, textures and densities, the first step is to make sure you have the correct equipment for the job. In terms of size, bigger isn’t necessarily better, especially when you’re performing a repetitive task over many hours. Exercising caution is a necessity when using bigger tools, as there are higher levels of risks involved. When choosing a drill, the biggest mistake people make is looking at the tool’s weight class, as opposed to the impact energy of the equipment. The weight class will only be relevant if you’re working in a downward orientation (floor). If you’re drilling into a wall or ceiling, the weight class is insignificant. Another misconception is that the harder you push the drill, the better it’s going to work. Drilling relies on the impact energy and how effectively that’s transferred from the tool to the end of the drill bit. Higher quality tools will
38
Issue 37
www.inflightmagazine.com.au
have a higher energy impact, making them easier and safer to use. When drilling into concrete or rock, the dust generated can cause a long list of issues, from asthma and breathing difficulties to sinus infections and cancer. Although it’s strongly recommended you wear a mask whenever working with concrete, masks only offer limited protection. Instead, opt for Dust Removal Systems, which eliminate the debris that’s been created and leave you with a clean work area while reducing your exposure to dust. They also improve the speed of the job (as there’s less dust getting in the way of the chiselling or cutting) and help prevent your tool from overheating, increasing its longevity. 2. Demolition If you’ve been in the industry for a while, you’ll be familiar with the painful white-knuckle syndrome that comes from long-term use of vibrating machines. This disease affects the nerves, joints, blood vessels and muscles in the fingers and hands, and causes numbness, change of skin colour and loss of strength. In extreme cases it can lead to fingers
being amputated. To minimise this, switch to tools that have Active Vibration Reduction technology. This technology reduces the vibration caused by the pneumatic hammering action during operation, by separating the handle of the tool from the body of the tool. 3. Anchoring Anchoring is another repetitive task and many of the miners I’ve dealt with haven’t had formalised training for anchor installation. Repetitive Strain Injury is a result of muscle fatigue and can come from the constant pulling of the dispensing tool trigger, which puts unnecessary strain on the operator. Opting for battery-powered technology will completely eliminate the risk of this and although it is sometimes considered a “luxury” onsite, it reduces injuries, increases productivity and reduces wastage, because you pre-measure the amount of chemical required. See www.hilti.com.au for more information. n

FIGHTING FIT
BEACH LEGS By: Steve Roberts
FOR: People who need or want to improve muscular strength and lower body performance, which will tone the butt, thighs and calves while increasing aerobic fitness. EQUIPMENT: Perform these with just your bodyweight or add weights if desired. Use blocks (or a step), towel and open space – preferably a park or beach. BEACH LEGS PROGRAM: As summer hits with full force, it becomes time to expose those hidden bits. If you are like a lot of my clients, this can be an area of great concern, especially if you didn’t maintain your lower half during the “off peak” (or cold) season. But fear no more, as I have designed a four-week beach legs program that will build the legs and rear you envy on others. It should be done at least three times a week, with a day’s rest in between each training session. During the days off, you could focus on other areas of your health and mental wellbeing.
About Steve Steve Roberts is an exercise
Four-Week Program TEMPO TRAIN TO DELIVER RESULTS The speed at which you lift a weight or do an exercise has great consequences on the development of the muscles. The workouts include a tempo designation for each exercise using three digits: e.g. 211, perhaps, or 11X or X. The first number: The number of seconds to lower the weight or body e.g. when doing a push up, you are in an upward position: holding your body weight up, you lower your body to the ground. Thus, the first number in the tempo column tells you how slowly this should be done. Try to control the weight or body without using momentum or assistance (such as swinging). Where X appears, this means that it is done as explosively as possible. The second number: This is the transition time between the lowering and lifting parts of the exercise. It tells you how long to pause. The third number: This is the speed of the lift (concentric or shortening) phase. If it is a 1 or 2 then you’ll have that time to lift, which is fast. If it’s a cross (X) instead of a numeral, the exercise is a power exercise and needs be done with extreme speed.
Pre-Training Warm up
Description Always perform a 5-10-min aerobic exercise that gradually increases heart rate. Include Range Of Motion (ROM) exercises as per movements in your workout. E.g. dynamic leg stretches.

stablishing a healthy lifestyle has long been acknowledged as a problem for FIFO workers. A government inquiry released in April, called “Health behaviours and outcomes associated with fly-in fly-out and shift workers in Western Australia”, said FIFOs were more likely than their nine-to-five counterparts to be overweight or obese, drink to excess and smoke. When questioned, 90 per cent of FIFO workers said maintaining an exercise and

PERFECT MATCH What’s the secret to boosting your vitamin and mineral absorption by up to 50 per cent? Correct food pairing. By: Belinda Crestani
T
hink you eat a healthy, balanced diet? Well it may come as a surprise to learn that your body may only be absorbing a small percentage of the nutrients you consume. And you are not what you eat; you are what you digest, absorb and metabolise.
2. Red wine and almonds Enhance your heart health by enjoying red wine and almonds together. Both the antioxidant resveratrol in red wine and the naturally high levels of vitamin E found in almonds work together to thin the blood and improve blood vessel health.
As well as reducing your nutrient absorption, poor food combinations could be wreaking havoc on your gut and your overall health, crushing your immune system, accelerating the ageing process and leading to weight gain. Conversely, some food pairings can greatly improve your health and wellbeing. This concept is also known as “food synergy”. Research suggests that not only do some of the nutrients in food interact with each other to improve the body’s ability to utilise them, they can also help fight chronic diseases and conditions, such as heart disease, certain cancers, stroke, diabetes and obesity. Try these five perfect food pairs for optimal nutrient absorption and health: 1. Lean meat with broccoli These two are a great combination. Vitamin C (found in citrus fruits and dark-green vegetables) can enhance the body’s absorption of iron (from lean meat, fish and beans) when these are eaten at the same time.
44
Issue 37
5. Green tea and lemon Vitamin C-rich lemons help to maximise your body’s ability to absorb catechins – the disease-fighting antioxidant found in green tea. Some of green tea’s compounds, including oxalates, can inhibit iron absorption, but lemons help to reduce that negative effect. Conversely, it’s best to avoid these four food pairings. 1. Bananas and milk Ayurveda lists bananas and milk as one of the most toxin-forming pairs. It is thought to create heaviness in the body and slow down the mind. If you enjoy banana smoothies, ensure the banana is very ripe and add some nutmeg to stimulate digestion. 2. Tea and coffee with meals Both tea and coffee contain tannins that can inhibit mineral absorption in the body, so it’s best to avoid drinking either at meal time. 3. Alcohol with meals Alcohol can hamper the absorption of two essential B vitamins: folate and thiamin. So try to avoid drinking with your meal as much as possible.
3. Eggs and cheese The naturally occurring vitamin D in egg yolks optimises the body’s absorption of the heartand bone-promoting calcium in cheese. Sufficient calcium levels also promote neurotransmitter health, while stabilising hormones and reducing weight gain. 4. Tomatoes and avocado To reduce inflammation, eat tomatoes and avocado at the same time. It’s believed that
www.inflightmagazine.com.au
4. Fruit after a meal If you eat fruit after a meal, the fruit sugar will sit for too long in the stomach (while the body works to digest the meal beforehand) and ferment, which will acidify the rest of the food in your gut. Instead, reach for foods rich in fat, protein and starch (such as nuts or seeds), which can remain in the stomach for a long time and require more digestion. GINGER-GLAZED HAM
Serves: 12 INGREDIENTS • 3.5 kilograms semi-boneless picnic shoulder ham • 1 small orange, unpeeled, halved and thinly sliced • 1 lemon, unpeeled, halved and thinly sliced • 15 whole cloves • ½ cup Buderim Ginger’s Original Ginger Marmalade • ½ cup Buderim Ginger’s Ginger Refresher • 1½ tablespoons wholegrain mustard DIRECTIONS STEP 1: Pre-heat oven to 180C or 160C fan forced. Line a roasting pan with foil. STEP 2: Using a small knife, cut around the ham shank in a zigzag pattern, about 10cm from the end. To remove the rind from the ham, run a knife under the rind right around the edge of the ham. Gently lift off the rind in one piece by running your fingers between the rind and the fat. STEP 3: Using toothpicks to secure, arrange the orange and lemon slices over the ham. Stud with the cloves. Place the ham in the prepared pan. STEP 4: Combine the Original Ginger Marmalade and Ginger Refresher in a small saucepan over moderate heat. Cook, stirring, for three to four minutes, or until thickened slightly. Stir in the mustard. Brush glaze evenly over the ham. STEP 5: Bake, basting occasionally with pan juices, for 55-60 minutes, or until golden-brown. Let the ham stand for five minutes. Carve and serve with salad. n

You know, kick ass, piss in your pants, run out of the theatre, rip your dick off and throw yourself into traffic funny! If there had been Ritalin when I was a kid, I wouldn’t be here now. SAFETY BRIEFING Please listen carefully to the Safety Briefing and take the time to read through the Safety On Board Card prior to takeoff. This will help you familiarise yourself with the emergency exits, brace position and the location of your life jacket. DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT) It has been reported that some airline passengers have developed clots in deep blood vessels, often in the lower legs, as a result of sitting for an extended period without exercise or movement. This condition is known medically as Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT. If blood clot fragments break off and lodge in other areas of the body such as the lungs, they may cause a possible fatal pulmonary thrombosis when a person starts walking after being immobile for a long time. The risk factors for DVT include varicose veins, recent surgery or injury in the lower legs, malignant diseases, past history of DVT, obesity, pregnancy and recent childbirth. Anyone with these risk factors is advised to consult a doctor prior to flying to find out how to minimise the risk of DVT. During the flight, we recommend passengers take the following precautions: • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and minimise intake of alcohol. • Exercise onboard the aircraft by moving and stretching your toes, rotating your ankles, raising and lowering each leg and massaging your calves gently. In addition, we suggest that you avoid crossing your legs. SEATBELTS Seatbelts must be firmly fastened for take-off, landing and whilst the seatbelt sign is illuminated. We do recommend that your seatbelt be fastened at all times whilst seated in case of unexpected turbulence. TRAY TABLES/SEAT BACKS Please ensure your tray tables and your seat backs are in the upright position for take-off and landing. SMOKING Government regulations strictly prohibit smoking on all domestic flights. Special smoke detectors have been fitted to the toilet on board the aircraft. Smoking is also prohibited on the tarmac and throughout the terminal buildings. CARRY ON LUGGAGE If you have carry on luggage please stow it in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Hand luggage not correctly stowed may cause injury in the event of unexpected turbulence. ELECTRONIC DEVICES Hazards exist to aircraft systems by Electro-Magnetic Interference from Portable Electronic Devices. The interference can cause aircraft systems to malfunction. To provide adequate protection for the aircraft please note that: mobile phones are not to be used at any time on board the aircraft. Other devices such as compact disc players, portable palm top and lap top computers, cassette players, personal electronic organisers or personal video games may be used during cruise only, NOT when the aircraft is taking off and landing.
