Skippers Kimberley Air Service routes to Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek are being well patronised by the local community. The routes provide a fast and comfortable journey to these remote locations. Changes to our regular passenger services means there are now two direct flights, Monday and Friday, to Mt Magnet. This has been made possible due to the community sharing the Ramelius Resources crew change flights, which are being well received. There is also the current Wednesday flight via Meekatharra and Wiluna. The Carnarvon racing season has just concluded. It has been very successful, with Skippers providing charter flights for jockeys and race personnel. y m m Ji Imagine sitting amid Australia’s lush landscape, indulging in good food and fine wine, while being entertained by some of the greatest national and international musicians. A Day On The Green has this list checked year after year and its upcoming outdoor concert season is no exception, with Jimmy Barnes billed as one of the event’s headline acts. By: Aly Eveille
A
Day On The Green (ADOTG) has been kicking goals since 2001, bringing memorable experiences to Australia’s top wine-growing regions and green spaces annually from October to March. The launch of 2014’s season coincides with Jimmy Barnes’ newly released album 30:30, which is a highly anticipated re-creation of his hits in collaboration with a stellar line-up of artists. And what’s exciting for fans and attendees of ADOTG this year is that Jimmy is billed as the headline act for the national

tour, and he’ll be bringing some of his 30:30 crew with him! As a returning performer to the event, Jimmy explained how each show caters to its varied audience. “If you want to get drunk and get up the front, you can do that. If you want to sit back with a picnic basket with your wife and have dinner, you can do that. And if you want to bring your kids and lay on the lawn, you can do that [too],” he said. “It’s a gig that’s got something for everybody and I’m sure lashings of good-quality Australian wine helps, but add in a lot of really great Australian music and the combination is lethal!” The main thing Jimmy loves about ADOTG is that the crowds go off. “The idea is to have all of these great bands in one place playing as hard as we can to drag the best out in each other,” he said. “We’re all going to be working our arses off because we inspire each other to do that and the audience will get to sit back and reap the benefits.” Others appearing onstage at ADOTG will be The Living End – a favourite band of Jimmy’s and an act he said he’ll have to live up to. “I’m really excited about working with The Living End because they’re just so bloody good and they’re ferocious as a band.” After The Living End plays, Jimmy said he’ll have to make an effort to maintain the

crowd’s hype. “I’m going to have to work really hard, and I love that,” he said. After 40 years of touring and 30 years as a solo artist, it’s surprising how much energy this Aussie rock’n’roll great still has. “Come and kick my arse, boys – I need it!” he said, laughing. Jimmy’s 30:30 album gives ADOTG fans a taste of his performances in the upcoming season. There are collaborations with Keith Urban, The Living End, Tina Arena, “Little” Steven Van Zandt, Baby Animals, Jon Stevens, his daughter Mahalia and even a track recorded by distance with former Powderfinger frontman Bernard Fanning. “I’ve spent a lot of time touring and I like to be stimulated by other bands,” Jimmy said. “I find that every time I sing with another artist or band I learn something from how they tackle things. Every time I do that with anybody I learn something new and I think that’s a great thing. As long as you’re learning, you’re moving forward.” A Day on the Green, featuring Jimmy Barnes and The Living End, takes place at Kings Park & Botanic Garden, Perth on Saturday, November 22 and Sunday, November 23. Gates open at 4pm and close by 10.30pm both days. Tickets are on sale now. General admission: $105 per person per day. his year organisers have upped the ante, with new events and fresh talent set to arrive from November 21. Highlights include performances by musician Neil Finn, talk-back with Matt Preston, and special guest appearances by Heston Blumenthal and Rick Stein. The list of worldrenowned chefs in attendance is endless, and the new events created by organisers are anticipated to send attendees into culinary overdrive. Of the chefs attending, Ben Milgate and Elvis Abrahanowicz of Porteno, Bodega and Gardel’s Bar in Sydney will be showing off their skills at various events. Elvis explained that their visit to the south west is about showcasing what they do and bringing a bit of their worldly, South-American-style vibe to visitors at the Gourmet Escape. “We’ll be doing about eight open-field woodfired lambs each day and visitors will really experience a taste of our signature dishes,” he said. “We also love music, so there will be some of our favourite playlists setting the atmosphere. At Bodega and Porteno, we do

our own thing and our aim is to be different to every other place. We have an open kitchen and a fun, interactive vibe, so we want to bring a bit of that with us.” Internationally-renowned Aboriginal chef, Mark Olive, will be creating a magical experience when visitors join him for dinner under the stars at Lake Cave. There will be barbecues on beaches and feasts in the forests, as well as exclusive wine and dining experiences at different vineyards and estates scattered throughout the region. Some local venues are also collaborating with the Gourmet Escape to offer visitors even more options to satisfy their senses. As usual, though, the Gourmet Village at Leeuwin Estate Winery will be the centre of the action, with different food and wine sampling, advice from the experts, demonstrations, master classes, as well as Q&A and panel discussions. With the best of Western Australia’s produce in one spot, this event is hard to miss! See www.gourmetescape.com.au for the full program of events. n

T
he Perth International golf championship has enthusiasts polishing their shoes and preparing for a weekend on the green to watch some of the world’s golfing greats do their thing. Three major champions have been announced to play: Jason Dufner, Charl Schwartzel and Geoff Ogilvy, as well as Ryder Cup Europe team member Victor Dubuisson, five-time European Tour winner Brett Rumford, defending champion Jin Jeong, and 2014 Texas Open winner Steven Bowditch. The impressive field has organisers calling it the strongest Perth International yet. Players will once again be battling it out for the US$2 million prize money, which makes the Perth International Australia’s richest golfing event. Along with being the only international golf tournament held in Western Australia, the Perth International is the only event in Australia to be co-sanctioned with the European Tour. It’s also an important tournament for players who need to retain their cards for the following season, or qualify for the Race to Dubai Final Series. Lake Karringup is Western Australia’s premier private golf club, and is also rated one of the top 10 courses in Australia. Course superintendent, Trevor Strachan, said his 26-person team are in full championship course set-up mode. “We’re dusting, top dressing, and cutting down around the tees to prepare all surfaces,” he said. “If the weather stays warm through to the event, the greens will be firm, fair and fast like last year’s Perth International.” And the tournament certainly doesn’t discriminate when it comes to age. Young sports fans have been allocated dedicated viewing areas, so they can get closer to the action. The public village will also be loaded with activities, including the chance for junior golfers from local clubs to experience mentor sessions from PGA professionals. Perth International director, Simon Corkill, is encouraging first-time attendees to choose the new $20 ticket on Thursday, October 23, this year. “The new advantage ticket, designed for guests keen on golf, is proving popular, which is no surprise because it gives the ticket holder up to $200 worth of savings, including discounted green fees at certain courses,” he said. Tickets and packages are available to suit all budgets and enthusiasts. See www.perthinternational.com for more information. n

On Saturday, November 8, neon-clad participants will rock up to Perth’s Claremont Showground for the Neon Run. Last year an impressive 7500 took part in the fun fivekilometre event, which benefits Beyondblue.
H
aving to run five kilometres in your best time is tricky enough for most of us, let alone being pelted with neon powder paint while you do it! Luckily, the Neon Run isn’t a race to the death. In fact, it’s actually one of Australia’s most famous fun runs. Participants are free to walk, run or dance their way to the finish line, while enjoying the different music and “Neon Zones” scattered throughout the course. This year there will also be a new foam zone and a silent disco, which has attendees eagerly awaiting the event! Event director, David Budge, said it’s a great experience that appeals to all generations and all abilities. “It’s definitely not an event for the stopwatch fanatics, but more for those who like the distraction of the lights and the music to hide the five-kilometre walk or dance they embark on,” he said. And the fun doesn’t stop at the finish line. At the end of the course the Main Stage will see Perth’s top DJs pumping out the tunes and keeping the crowd dancing into the night. But the best part about the Neon Run is that it supports independent, not-for-profit organisation Beyondblue. The whole event is developed to assist with their #partyforapurpose campaign, which helps increase awareness and understanding of depression, anxiety and suicide prevention in Australia. Cost is $55 per person or $50 for teams of four or more. Ticket cost includes: race bib, T-shirt, neon headband, and a beat-activated flashing wrist band. Australia’s largest trade and skill competition, WorldSkills Australia National Competition, wrapped up on September 20 this year in Perth. The event saw about 500 of Australia’s most talented trade and skill technicians representing 49 specialised skill categories.
W
orldSkills is the only event on the national calendar that brings together such a diverse range of professions, including automotive, building and construction, computing and business, client services and hospitality services industries. The aim of the competition is to showcase the skills of Australia’s best young Vocational Education and Training (VET) students, apprentices and trainees. Each of the national competitors earned their position on the national stage in September after their medal-winning performances in the round of regional competitions, which were held across the 30 WorldSkills Australia regions last year. From September 18-20 the competitors battled it out for the prestigious title of “Nation’s Best”, as well as the chance to

become a 2015 Team Australia Skillaroo. The 2015 Skillaroos will be heading to Brazil to represent Australia and their industry at the 43rd WorldSkills International Competition in São Paolo, Brazil, in August 2015. It is estimated that the national competition attracted approximately $15 million to the city of Perth. In addition to the economic benefit, there was also the intangible benefit of providing a truly unique and interactive forum for the thousands of students and the general public, which showcased the diversity and opportunities available in Australia’s vocational education and training sector. The announcement of the 2015 Team Australia Skillaroos will be made later this year. See www.worldskills.org.au for more information.

M
ore than just a horse race, the 153-year-old Melbourne Cup is a social and cultural tradition combining the very best of what Melbourne has to offer in terms of food, wine, sport, business, social interaction and fashion. The Carnival attracts more than 330,000 racegoers to the Heritage-listed Flemington racecourse over the four race days, including the AAMI Victoria Derby Day (November 1); Emirates Melbourne Cup Day (November 4); Crown Oaks Day aka Ladies Day (November 6) and Emirates Stakes Day (November 8). The Emirates Melbourne Cup, a 3200-metre Group 1 staying race, is one of the world’s richest, offering $6.2 million in prize money. The trophy itself is valued at $175,000 this year, and is created from 2,340 grams of solid 18ct gold. Unsurprisingly the race draws competitors from across the globe, with the annual invasion of northern hemispheretrained stayers making it a truly international event. In 2013, nine of the 24 runners were internationally trained, including three owned by royalty. Such is the significance of the event, Cup Day is even a public holiday in Melbourne each year, with the race (held at 3pm local time) attracting a 100,000-plus crowd to Flemington racecourse. The day before the event, Melbourne’s city streets are closed for a parade celebrating the trainers and jockeys. THE HORSES At the top of the preliminary favourites list this year after dominating the field in the Sydney Cup is Gai Waterhouse’s star stayer The Offer. Also making headlines is Hawkspur, which is trained by Sydney training premiership winner

FASHION Emirates Melbourne Cup is the day to make your strongest fashion statement, with an exotic or outrageous ensemble. Hats are essential and so is a yellow rose in the lapel. In 2013, Melbourne Cup Carnival racegoers spent more than $31.4 million – or $172 per racegoer – on fashion items to wear to the Melbourne Cup Carnival. In 1962, the VRC Committee introduced a competition designed to “woo more women to the races” during the Carnival. Today, Myer Fashions on the Field at Flemington is not just an institution of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, it is Australia’s largest and most prestigious outdoor fashion event. Each year women (and more recently men) vie for a lavish prize pool worth more

MATTER OF TASTE: “There are so many different wines available to the consumer today, it can be overwhelming trying to make an informed choice,” Darren said. “The first thing is to have an idea of what you like to drink. THINK PINK
October is national breast cancer awareness month. For the second year in a row, the National Breast Cancer Foundation is challenging workers to ditch their traditional high-vis gear for pink high-vis to raise money for breast cancer research. The current fundraising campaign is running right though until May 2015, so there’s still plenty of time to get involved.
M
iners are typically depicted as rough, tough blokes with hands like old boots and mouths like wharfies. Their masculinity has never been called into question, until now. The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is asking Aussie miners if they are man enough to wear pink to support the women in their lives, as part of its Real Men Wear Pink (RMWP) campaign. The NBCF is calling on miners to don pink high-vis workwear, register via realmenwearpink.org.au, set a fundraising target, and then ask their workmates, friends and families to sponsor their efforts to raise money for breast cancer research. All you need to do is wear pink for a certain amount of time, or until you reach your fundraising target – the choice is yours, so get creative!
28
Issue 36
And why not challenge your boss, coworkers or friends to get kitted out in pink too during October? Men are often left out of the discussion when it comes to breast cancer, but they are stakeholders in the illness, whether that’s as a partner, father, brother, son, friend or the person with breast cancer (about 1 per cent of all breast cancer diagnosis is in men). NBCF CEO, Carole Renouf, said, “Real Men Wear Pink is not only about getting men to acknowledge the role they play in the breast cancer experience, it’s about getting men to ‘man up’ ... and actively do something to help change the future of breast cancer for their daughters, wives, mothers, sisters and friends.” Together, Aussie men can help the NBCF move closer towards its goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030.
www.inflightmagazine.com.au
The RMWP campaign launched in mid 2013. This year the organisation hopes to raise more than $1 million by May 2015, through corporate and community support. By the end of September, the 2014/15 campaign had raised $250,000 from matched donations, fundraising and cause-related marketing. Mining Minerals Group (MMG) joined the campaign this year as a collective, with 26 teams across Queensland and Western Australia. So far they have raised more than $56,500 in total, and MMG Golden Grove is sitting at the top of the RMWP fundraising organisation leader board with $14,200 raised to date. Golden Grove project engineer, Dave Wilton, said enthusiasm for the cause on site had been excellent, with employees dressing in pink workshirts, dying their beards, and even painting a dump truck to show their support! Bisley Workwear is also doing its part, and has signed on as a platinum partner, pledging to raise $100,000 for the campaign. Bisley has released a new range of pink workwear and will donate $3 from the sale of each shirt to the NBCF. Their new pink range includes two night and day compliant and one night-only compliant high-vis safety garments for mine sites in both men’s and women’s styles (see bisleyworkwear.com.au). Bisley’s ambassadors for the 2014 RMWP campaign are The Block’s Scott Cam and Kyal and Kara Demmrich from the show’s Fans v Faves season. “When I found out that one in eight Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, I was shocked,” Scott said. “As a dad, a hubby, and a son with many female friends and colleagues, this statistic is incredibly scary. But we all have the opportunity to do something to help change these statistics.” Register now at realmenwearpink.org. au. The current RMWP campaign ends in May 2015. See www.nbcf.org.au for more information.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women. In 2014, 15,270 women are predicted to be diagnosed with breast cancer. On average, seven women die from breast cancer every day. Finding breast cancer early increases the chance of surviving the disease. About 110 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. n
ARE YOU
MAN ENOUGH?
n a m o w P O T N O Emma Stevenson took out the Outstanding Tradesperson/Operator category at the CME WA Women in Resources Awards in March, after being named WA Apprentice of the Year in 2013. Hilary Board caught up with the driven 33-year-old.
Where did you commence your career? I started out as a process technician with Kimberly Diamonds in Broome. I then joined BHP Billiton Nickel West Leinster in 2008. My diligence allowed me to be put forward for a BHP Billiton apprenticeship in electrical and instrumentation trades. I was successful (out of 800 applicants) and completed the four-year apprenticeship early (in September 2013), so I am now an electrical and instrumentation technician at Leinster. Why did you choose this particular apprenticeship? As a process technician, I was utilising the instrumentation to indicate what was going on in the process and deliver on-spec product quality. The instrumentation prevented me from having to expose myself to hazards, a clear advantage! When I saw BHP was offering apprenticeships relating to instrumentation, I was very interested. I’d worked alongside many sparkies, so I could see myself doing that trade. What did you enjoy most about your apprenticeship? The variety, as it allowed me to be rotated through the different areas of the underground mining operations and surface processing. I got electrical experience in underground power reticulation, capital project works, milling and process electrical and instrumentation, power line maintenance, township maintenance and domestic electrical experience. Learning the instrumentation qualification alongside the electrical qualification was beneficial, as I could see how theories interacted. What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve faced? I was used to being pretty capable and independent before I started the apprenticeship, so I found it challenging to ask for help. There were times I got frustrated at not being able to do something, but when I finally asked for help I was shown a different technique or a better tool that made it heaps easier. Now I have apprentices to teach and I’d rather they just asked me for help, as it’s safer. What’s it like being a woman in your line of work? I enjoy my work and I don’t feel like an outsider. Being part of BHP and knowing they have a sophisticated code-ofconduct policy and a good counselling program have brought me peace of mind, and it’s also guided me in my behaviours too. I’ve noticed that I’m more identifiable on-site among all the hi-vis guys (I’m pretty short), and at first I thought this was a bad thing, as I’m quite shy. But I’ve realised now that it’s easier
30
Issue 36
www.inflightmagazine.com.au
to take the lead when you’re already standing out from the crowd. What’s your biggest accomplishment to date? It’s hard to beat the feeling of achieving your trade qualification, but winning the 2013 WA Apprentice of the Year title definitely comes close! Both accomplishments have allowed me to develop my skills and leadership abilities. Going on to compete in the National Training Awards, winning the CME WA Women in Resources Awards, being a finalist in the Women in Resources National Awards in early September, and stepping into a tradesperson role has meant a big year for me! What’s your average work day like? I get up about 4am, grab my crib for the day and get on the bus by 5.15am to be at the meeting by 6am. We then discuss any events from the previous day. We prioritise any breakdowns, to reduce downtime. We then have scheduled work projects – such as new upgrades, compliance and preventative maintenance inspections. If everything goes to plan, we will have time to scope out new projects, go over theory and practices with apprentices, and clean and organise the workshop. We finish at 6pm and go back to camp, where we get a buffet of food. I usually crash out by 8pm, but some evenings I go for a run around the town or have a beer with the crew. What do you like to do during your time off? I’m an active board member in the newly formed not-for-profit volunteer organisation TradeUP Australia (www. tradeupaustralia.com.au). It’s aimed at encouraging females to see trades as a viable career path. What advice do you have for other women interested in your line of work? Don’t give up. Apprenticeships are very competitive, especially within the resources industry, so any work experience you can get will be great exposure. That said, getting work experience can be hard too, so it’s important to use your networks and tell everyone that you are seeking this career path. Pre-apprenticeships are also great, as are VETiS programs, as they may allow you to complete your apprenticeship earlier. n

ADVICE forfifo newbies New to the FIFO lifestyle? It can be challenging at first, so here are five tips from Deb Russo.
2. Communicate with your partner. My husband and I talk about everything – from divorce to life after death. Some people say we’ve cursed our relationship by already talking about separating, but if you can’t talk about everything without fear, then you’re in trouble. The same goes for being willing to listen. There is a right and a wrong way to communicate. If you don’t know how to do
it, learn (and quickly). All your relationships depend on it. 3. Accept the hard parts and adapt. We never get something for nothing, and the FIFO life is no different. If you want to make decent money with good time off, a little hard work is required. You can’t go in thinking it's going to be easy all the time, because it’s not easy for anyone – not for the partner working away, the partner at home, or the children. Life is all about evolving. How you adapt to the FIFO life will determine whether you succeed or fail. Try different things until you find a routine (and a roster) that works for you and your family – not what others tell you is right. Go with your instincts and trust yourself.
ce and Free professional advi in mining, oil and gas. for families Issue 36

5. Re-evaluate. Having said all of this, if you’ve given FIFO a good shot and it's still not working for you and your family, you need to reconsider your position. It's simply not worth risking your relationships for a job. Money can’t fix a family and being able to make FIFO work does not make you more or less of a person. In fact, recognising that something isn’t working and having the courage to address it says more about a person than any amount of money. Deb Russo has been a FIFO wife for more than a decade. She is a regular contributor for Mining Family Matters’ website (www.miningfm.com.au) and also has her own blog (www.thefifowife.com.au). n
4. Have a positive attitude. I don’t waste my time on people who have a continual bad attitude. I do understand that everyone has a bad day now and then, but you control the thoughts in your head and how you respond

1. Understand the job and the roster. There is a reason you are doing this, so keep that in mind. For me and my husband, it’s the lifestyle. For others, it’s the money. We do 4:4 weeks (four weeks on, followed by four weeks off), so we work six months of the year. Those four weeks at work can be tough, but we know that. We knew that when we took the job. Understand how long that time is away from your partner, family and friends. You will have good days, great days, bad days and horrible days, but nothing in life comes easily.

EXPLORATION
CAPITAL DROUGHT
A
ll those operating in the Australian minerals exploration space will be aware that the industry has been afflicted by an exploration capital drought. Latest ABS data shows exploration expenditure for 2013-14 was down by 48 per cent, compared with 2011-12, when exploration expenditure was at an all-time high. But what impact does the weather have on explorers trying to do as much as they can with the little cash they have? La Niña is the weather event that has the greatest impact on an explorer’s ability to work as late as possible up to Christmas, before high temperatures and the wet season hit. An early wet season with a long duration and greater-thanaverage coastal cyclone crossings (as are typical of a La Niña event) are an explorer’s nightmare, as the resultant rain can cause equipment under-utilisation and project cost blow-outs. El Niño is often associated with reduced tropical cyclone numbers, with fewer coastal crossings. The good news this year is that, as at September, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology model is indicating a 50 per cent chance of an El Niño forming in 2014. The normal odds for an El Niño in any given year are 20 per cent to 25 per cent. So at twice the normal likelihood of an El Niño this summer, things are looking good for ground accessibility. The northern Australian cyclone season runs from November 1 to April 30. Now is the time to prepare your site for the season and its potential affects. Download this edition’s free guidance documents for the wet season: Cyclone Pre-Season Checklist, Cyclone Event Checklist and the Cyclone Recovery Checklist at www.explorationonline.com.au/digirock/Useful_ Documents-Seasonal_FREE_Document.htm, or visit Digirock's Exploration-on-line store at www.explorationonline.com.au for other useful documents. n
IMPROVING GOLD RECOVERY WITH RECYCLE CRUSHERS With the operating costs of gold producers coming under pressure, companies are seeking to improve their gold recovery from the circuit through cost effective proven solutions. The installation of a recycle crusher, commonly referred to as a pebble or scats crusher, into the milling circuit is one way to improve recovery. Mintrex, an engineering company based in Perth Western Australia, has extensive experience in this area with clients benefitting through a fast design to commissioning process, resulting in immediate productivity gains.
Low cost, value engineered recycle crusher
Why a recycle crusher? Autogenous (AG) and ball milling circuits build up pebbles or scats. These are lumps of ore typically 25-50 mm that are very difficult to break down within a milling circuit. The pebbles are too small to break other rock or too large to be broken by the grinding media. A buildup of recirculating pebbles will result in decreased mill efficiency and so a reduction in mill throughput. Pebble circuits are commonly installed when there is a change of ore type through the mine life. The circuit consists of a screen at the mill discharge to separate the pebbles, a magnet to remove small grinding media, a series of conveyors and a recycle crusher. Recycle crushers are typically cone crushers and reduce the pebble size to minus 15 mm allowing them to be ground in the mill. Mintrex has significant experience in the design and installation of new and retro-fit pebble crushers. They work with the site operations personnel and equipment suppliers to achieve the right fit-for-purpose solution and have provided innovative and low cost design solutions for four pebble

The California T also sports the latest evolution of F1-Trac, which guarantees maximum acceleration out of corners, and CCM3 carbon-ceramic brakes integrated with the ESP 8.0 Premium system, which controls the high-performance ABS to deliver extremely short stopping distances (100 to 0 km/h in just 34 metres). The Ferrari Styling Centre, in collaboration with Pininfarina, radically reworked the California T’s design to endow it with a completely new personality, while still retaining its original dimensions. Its flanks are a homage to the 250 Testa Rossa’s famous pontoon-fender styling, with the front wing line stretching back towards the compact, muscular rear and bringing an aerodynamic sleekness and movement to the sides. The rear benefits from aerodynamic research, resulting in a new triple-fence diffuser. The air vents in the bonnet boost the efficiency of the front radiator, helping reduce its overall dimensions, while the lower section of the front bumper has been profiled to channel air to the intercoolers.
Like all Ferraris, the California T boasts cutting-edge technological solutions that make it absolutely unique. Most notable is its new direct-injection 3855cc V8 turbo engine, which punches out a massive 560 cv at 7500 rpm, yielding a specific power output of 145 cv/l, the highest in its category, as well as maximum torque of 755 Nm in 7th gear. These figures allow the California T to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds and deliver extraordinary acceleration – even in higher gears – producing a powerful sound that becomes even more impressive as revs increase. For the first time on an engine using this technology, turbo lag has been virtually eliminated by reducing inertia and adopting an F1-derived flat-plane crankshaft in addition to innovative twin-scroll turbines. Increasingly powerful pick-up is guaranteed by proprietary Variable Boost Management software, which adjusts torque delivery to suit the gear selected.

They can be found right around the country in the cooler waters, with the South Coast of NSW probably the most reliable (although Bass Strait and Tassie are good too). To catch one, drive your boat to the edge of the shelf and set a burley trail. Wait for a few hours and a

To catch one, anchor up your boat, toss out a juicy, fresh bit of bait – such as a squid head – and fish it on the bottom. You might catch a snapper as well! 4. In Exmouth it’s hard to catch a normal fish because the sharks eat it while you are fighting it! FRONT PLANK VS SIT-UPS: We were taught to do sit-ups at school and usually the kid who did the most was praised for how many they could do. They still use the sit-up test in many schools, as do personal trainers, gym instructors and average Joes working out at home. But have you ever wondered why you have a painful back after doing sit-ups? The routine is now out of favour because it is harmful for the back. We all thought sit-ups or crunches (sounds harder) meant tighter abs and a six pack, while holding a static movement, such as a front plank, was merely just holding your body and far too easy. These days planks – exercises in which you assume a position and hold it – are the gold standard for working out your core, while classic sit-ups and crunches have fallen out of favour.
FRONT PLANK
The front plank recruits a balance of muscles on the front, sides, and back of the body, versus the sit-up, which targets just a few muscles. By pushing the natural curve of your lower back into a hard floor during a sit-up, you are literally changing the natural shape of your spine and asking your muscles to lift your upper torso. Your hip flexors and probably your neck flexors will do all the pulling just to get your chest off the ground, which won’t work your core muscles.
By: Steve Roberts
The core muscles include your abdominal muscles, back muscles and the muscles around the pelvis. Their structure (flat and straplike) responds well to no movement (isometric contractions), whereas round muscles respond well to lengthening and shortening (isotonic contraction), such as performing a bicep curl.
WORKOUT BEST FOR: People who need to improve core muscle development and strength, injury management and prevention. As well as those who suffer from a sore back and need to improve their posture. EQUIPMENT: Bodyweight and stop watch. Weighted vest, backpack or weight plate (optional). FRONT PLANK WORKOUT: 1) Place your mat or towel on the floor. Your body will need to extend to almost its full length. 2) Get down on all fours. Bend your elbows so that your upper body is being supported by your forearms. Your hands should be relaxed with palms down.
3) Extend your legs backward. They should be at their full length. You head should be level with your neck and shoulders. You will be looking at the floor. 4) Raise your lower body by bending your toes and holding yourself up. Your upper body should be supported by your forearms. This creates the plank. 5) Tighten your abs. Hold the pose for as long as you can until you feel fatigued. If you feel yourself becoming shaky, check that your abs are still tightened. This pose helps strengthen your core muscles. Caution: Do not allow the spine to extend past the neutral position, unless otherwise specified by an exercise professional.
The core-region muscles contribute to spine stability in a variety of postures, providing the ability to flex, side bend and rotate the trunk. Many Activities of Daily Living (ADL), as well as sports and recreational activities, call on your muscles to work together, not in isolation. Incorporating other major exercises – such as deadlifts, squats and side-planks – will improve your body’s functional (practical) strength. Remember, your core goes far beyond your abdominal muscles and is not improved in isolation. Your core needs to work, just like your chest, back and legs.
FRONT PLANK
CHALLENGE
The progression each day is five seconds. If you increase the duration each day, you will be challengeing your core muscles at each attempt. The program requires you to attempt the challenge for one set only. If you do one set until failure, you will not need to do a second or third set, as you will be fatiguing your muscles. If, however, you find bodyweight boring, I strongly recommend adding load using a weight vest, weight plate or backpack. Use the same load for the duration of the 12-days. SAMPLE: Here is a sample program for a challenger who starts off the program at 20 seconds on day one. Each day she or he will do five seconds extra and by day 14, they will have reached 85 seconds and increased their core strength in the process. Front Plank Challenge Calendar for 20 seconds starter

sideline the supplements Australians spend about $500 million every year on vitamin and mineral supplements. For a cheaper, natural alternative, we’ve found the best food sources for the most important vitamins. By: Belinda Crestani VITAMIN D Known as “the sunshine vitamin”, vitamin D’s main purpose is to increase calcium absorption and promote the growth and development of bones and teeth. Vitamin D is typically produced in the body by the action of sunlight on the skin. Top food sources: Egg yolks, fish liver oil and oily fish – such as salmon, trout and sardines.
VITAMIN K Vitamin K is an important fatsoluble vitamin, stored in the bones and the liver. The body needs it to function, stay healthy, and prevent too much bleeding. Top food sources: Parsley, asparagus, chard or silver beet, prunes, and spirulina.
VITAMIN C As an antioxidant, vitamin C protects cells in the body from free radical damage and also has antiviral, antibacterial and anti-allergenic activity. It helps strengthen the immune system to fight colds and flu. Top foods sources: Brussels sprouts, broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, beans, bananas, peas, pineapple, potatoes, oranges, strawberries and lemons.
VITAMIN A Vitamin A promotes good vision, helping you to see and protecting

your eyes from infection. Vitamin A is an antioxidant, which helps to protect and heal your body, as well as form and maintain healthy skin, teeth, skeletal and soft tissue.
VITAMIN B3
Top food sources: Vitamin A comes in two natural forms: retinol, found in animal products such as liver, eggs, butter, and fish liver oils; and beta-carotene, found in plants such as dark orange vegetables, dark green leafy vegetables and fruits.
Top food sources: Meat, yeast products, whole grains, seeds, spirulina, peanuts and legumes.
VITAMIN E Vitamin E is essential for strong immunity and healthy skin and eyes. Eating plenty of raw foods, particularly vegetables, can boost your intake of vitamin E. Top food sources: Almonds, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, avocado, olive oil, coconut and sweet potato.
VITAMIN B2 Our bodies need vitamin B2 to help break down proteins, fats and carbohydrates. It plays a vital role in maintaining the body’s energy supply. Top food sources: Wholegrain cereals, yeast products, quinoa, spirulina, milk, eggs, salmon, broccoli, asparagus, almonds and spinach.
www.inflightmagazine.com.au
Vitamin B3, also known as Niacin, is essential for energy production within the body, as well as being involved in many other essential chemical reactions.
VITAMIN B6
Vitamin B6 plays a facilitating role in the immune system and the growth of new cells. It is naturally present in many foods. Top food sources: Yeast products, whole grains, bananas, pistachios, beans, chickpeas, brown rice and corn.
VITAMIN B9
Vitamin B9, also known as folic acid, is critical for the body’s production and maintenance of new cells. Top food sources: Avocado, yeast products, whole grains, spinach, asparagus, banana, chickpeas, most nuts, spirulina and oranges.
VITAMIN B12
Vitamin B12 plays an important role in the functioning of the brain and nervous system, and in the formation of red blood cells. It is the only vitamin not found in fruits or vegetables. Top food sources: Mussels, oysters, yeast, spirulina and fermented foods such as tempeh.
SUPER FRUITS IN SEASON THIS SPRING Grapefruits are an excellent source of vitamin C and A, which help strengthen immune function. Oranges are high in vitamin C, thiamine and dietary fibre. They’re a good source of vitamins A and B6, folate, calcium, magnesium and potassium. Lemons are high in vitamin C and fibre. They contain phytochemicals, such as limonin and limonene. Bananas are high in vitamins B6 and C, fibre, potassium, and manganese. They’re a good source of riboflavin, folate, magnesium and copper. Pineapples are high in vitamin C and manganese. They’re a good source of vitamin B6, folate, thiamine, magnesium, potassium and copper and are also known to contain several antioxidant flavonoids that may help combat chronic diseases. HABIT S
Our lifestyle and eating habits collectively define our health. If you change even just one bad habit for a health-forming habit, you can alter your body’s health outcomes. By: Cyndi O’Meara
H
abits save us from thinking about everything we do every second of the day. After all, having to think about which leg you put in your pants every morning would be annoying! Once we develop a habit, our brain shifts from making conscious choices to unconscious, automatic behaviour. If your habits are unhealthy they can make you sick. But you can dramatically change your health outcomes just by altering small eating habits, such as changing the salt or sugar you add, the fat you eat, or the liquids you drink. Manual labour in a hot climate changes the salt-water balance in your body. An alteration of 2 per cent to 5 per cent can change how your muscles and brain work. It’s important to
rehydrate and re-salt so the body can keep the balance correct and the body functioning properly. In addition to salt, sugary soft drinks and alcohol can cause imbalances. Salt water that’s unrefined (i.e. filtered water with Himalayan pink salt) not only hydrates the body, it replaces many minerals that may be missing. Throw away refined white salt. It is usually bleached and contains anti-caking agents. Replace it with Himalayan pink salt with dulse (that’s seaweed, which contains iodine and 75 valuable minerals). Sprinkle it on your food but make sure you pair it with a drink of water – rather than sugary, alcohol-laden beverages. Salt is just the beginning. The idea is to slowly change one of your bad health habits each week
by looking at the quality of the food and liquids you consume. Even your alcohol and mixers can change for the better, such as swapping ginger ale for plain soda water. Address not only the food and liquids you consume, but also the amount of sleep, movement, sunshine, down time and social interaction you get. All of these factors play key roles in your health and are not hard to change when done one at a time. Cyndi O’Meara is a nutritionist and founder of Changing Habits. See www.changinghabits.com.au.

FOR THE FIFOs FIFO workers are the backbone of the mining and resources industry and the FIFO phenomenon shows no sign of slowing down. By 2015 it is expected that there will be 63,500 FIFO workers in Western Australia alone. To support this growing workforce and their families, Western Australia’s mental health minister, Helen Morton, launched the website thisfifolife.com in mid September, ahead of National Mental Health Week in mid October.
I
f you are 38 years old, male and in a relationship, you are a “typical” FIFO worker. There is also a good chance that you are part of underground mining, riggers and blast crews, and spend considerable time away from family and friends as a result. It is known that these factors – social isolation, family and relationship stress, and exposure to high risk activities – can put you at a greater risk of mental health problems. There has been a concerted effort by the government and other mental health groups to address this risk in the past few months, and provide support for workers when needed. The website, thisfifolife.com, is one example of this support and was developed by mental health workers who spent time on mining sites. It highlights the challenges of the FIFO lifestyle and the strengths and resilience of the workers and their families. It also includes blogs, articles and links about many different issues relating to mental health and the FIFO way of life, as well as short videos, sharing ideas, and a section on where to get help. Western Australia’s mental health commissioner, Tim Marney, said, “Staying mentally fit is just as important as staying physically fit. Mental illness can be just as debilitating as physical illness or injury. We need to start looking after our mental health in the same way we care for our physical health. “Ten or 20 years ago, it would have been seen as ‘pretentious’ or ‘unmanly’ for a guy to use sunscreen, visit the gym and take care with his diet. Now it’s the norm. We need to do the same for mental health and turn the conversation around so that it is seen as a normal and healthy thing to do to seek help when we need it.” Marney is also keen to dispel the myth that depression is a sign of weakness. “It is an illness, just like diabetes or a heart condition,” he said. “While medication and/or therapy may not be for everyone, looking after yourself – through a good diet, physical activity, modest alcohol intake – and talking to and spending time with your mates and family can make a huge difference. “If a mate or someone you know is struggling, take action. We lose one person each day in Western Australia to suicide. Don’t let it be your mate because you were too scared you might say the wrong thing. The devastation that suicide causes in the community is massive and we all need to act to turn this around.”

About 45 per cent of Australians will experience mental illness in their lifetime. In a 12-month period, it is estimated that 65,000 Australians make a suicide attempt. An average of 2,300 people suicide every year. Suicide is the biggest killer of Australians aged 15 to 34 years (ABS 2012).

for Mental Health One in five Australians will suffer from a mental illness in any given year, and it is estimated that mental illness costs the Australian economy as much as $11 billion a year. ProChoice Safety Gear is doing something about the issue by donating $2 from the sale of every limited-edition black hard hat to the Black Dog Institute. The Black Dog Institute is dedicated to the prevention and treatment of mental illness through research and education programs throughout Australia. It is also a founding member of the Mentally Healthy Workplace Alliance, a government body formed to devise mental health best practice in the workplace. Workers and businesses can show their support of Black Dog and mental health by purchasing the limited-edition Black Dog hard hat through ProChoice Safety Gear in October, which also happens to be Safe Work Australia Month. Protecting your head’s interior is just as important as protecting your head’s exterior and the black hard hat will do both! See prosafetygear.com or blackdoginstitute.org.au for more information.

lmost half of Australia’s population experience a mental health disorder during their lifetime. This risk is heightened among FIFO workers and their families, due to their unique circumstances. Acting Executive Director of Arafmi WA, Debbie Childs, said, “The very real issue of FIFO workers’ mental health has grabbed headlines recently. The government and the industry have become increasingly aware that mental health issues, some even leading to suicide, are becoming a major problem within the FIFO workforce. The working situation with FIFO workers and their families is often difficult. Understanding

In the past year, Arafmi has overseen substantial growth in its remote services, including its Broome Aboriginal Outreach service, Broome family support, and increased services and support in Port Hedland, Carnarvon and Geraldton. “Depression and anxiety are the most prevalent mental disorders experienced by Australians,” Debbie said. “Depression is [even] predicted to be one of the world’s largest health problems by 2020.” “[Fortunately], much progress has been made towards combating the stigma associated with mental health issues. Greater focus by the Federal and State governments, business and the general community means that changes are coming.” “FIFO workers, like everyone else, should be talking about the issues and taking action. SPLIT STRATEGY Whether it comes out of the blue for one of you or you’ve both been avoiding the difficult conversation, it’s important to know what steps to take next once the end of a relationship or marriage is acknowledged. By: Bowen Buchbinder Vilensky Lawyers associate, Patricia Schrape.
E
very couple is different, and the degree of animosity will determine how urgently you need to act. Strongly consider getting confidential legal advice from an experienced family lawyer. It doesn’t commit you to anything, but should provide you with a good idea of what to do, your rights and entitlements. Here are some things to keep in mind in terms of finances and parenting. Finances/Property Joint bank or share trading accounts. If things are amicable, a broad discussion about usage may suffice. For accounts with significant funds, consider changing them so that both signatures are required to transact. Consider having salaries paid into accounts in your sole names – the first step towards practical financial independence. Mail. If you are still living under the same roof, think about setting up a PO Box for your personal mail. If you’re moving out, be sure to redirect all your mail. Passwords. If you have a prolific online presence, change all your passwords, even if

you think your significant other doesn’t know them. Pins. Change all your pin numbers for bank and credit cards, even if you think your significant other doesn’t know them. Cards. Cancel secondary credit cards if you suspect a vindictive shopping spree may be on the horizon. If possible, give notice before doing so to avoid their experiencing the embarrassment of a refused transaction and that embarrassment turning into wrath towards you. Will. Change your Will to reflect your new circumstances, keeping in mind that unless the Will is drafted “in contemplation of a divorce”, a Divorce Order will invalidate it. Super. Contact your superannuation fund to change the nominated beneficiary for your super. Super falls outside your Will. Division. Once your financial and property division is agreed, have it legally documented. This can be done via Family Court Consent Orders or a Binding Financial Agreement.

Parenting If you and your partner have children, this often introduces a whole other kind of complexity to the end of your relationship. It is in everyone’s best interest to present a united front to the children and be supportive of them and each other as parents while you guide them through what will invariably be a big change in their lives. Try to agree with your partner on a routine, and stick to it. Sometimes, despite good intentions, issues arise in relation to children. There are numerous private and government agencies that provide counselling, mediation services and other helpful programs. If things regarding the children look as though they may become contentious, try to keep a record of arrangements: who they’re spending time with and for how long etc. In stressful times such as these, memory often falters. Should the situation deteriorate, lawyers can assist in negotiating arrangements and, if necessary, bring proceedings in the Family Court. If the arrangements for the children are agreed, be sure to write them down clearly and concisely so everyone is on the same page. You should seriously consider getting Family Court Consent Orders, which provide much greater certainty. Finally, a note on social media, such as Facebook. Despite the fact your hundreds of friends and followers may be happy to post messages of support to you during this difficult time, it is usually best to stop social media usage or carefully limit it. A tipsy posting about an estranged partner can all too easily get back to them and cause all manner of grief. See www.bbvlegal.com.au or phone (08) 9325 9644. n

SAFETY BRIEFING Please listen carefully to the Safety Briefing and take the time to read through the Safety On Board Card prior to takeoff. This will help you familiarise yourself with the emergency exits, brace position and the location of your life jacket. DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT) It has been reported that some airline passengers have developed clots in deep blood vessels, often in the lower legs, as a result of sitting for an extended period without exercise or movement. This condition is known medically as Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT. If blood clot fragments break off and lodge in other areas of the body such as the lungs, they may cause a possible fatal pulmonary thrombosis when a person starts walking after being immobile for a long time. The risk factors for DVT include varicose veins, recent surgery or injury in the lower legs, malignant diseases, past history of DVT, obesity, pregnancy and recent childbirth. Anyone with these risk factors is advised to consult a doctor prior to flying to find out how to minimise the risk of DVT. During the flight, we recommend passengers take the following precautions: • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and minimise intake of alcohol. • Exercise onboard the aircraft by moving and stretching your toes, rotating your ankles, raising and lowering each leg and massaging your calves gently. In addition, we suggest that you avoid crossing your legs. SEATBELTS Seatbelts must be firmly fastened for take-off, landing and whilst the seatbelt sign is illuminated. We do recommend that your seatbelt be fastened at all times whilst seated in case of unexpected turbulence. TRAY TABLES/SEAT BACKS Please ensure your tray tables and your seat backs are in the upright position for take-off and landing. SMOKING Government regulations strictly prohibit smoking on all domestic flights. Special smoke detectors have been fitted to the toilet on board the aircraft. Smoking is also prohibited on the tarmac and throughout the terminal buildings. CARRY ON LUGGAGE If you have carry on luggage please stow it in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Hand luggage not correctly stowed may cause injury in the event of unexpected turbulence. ELECTRONIC DEVICES Hazards exist to aircraft systems by Electro-Magnetic Interference from Portable Electronic Devices. The interference can cause aircraft systems to malfunction. To provide adequate protection for the aircraft please note that: mobile phones are not to be used at any time on board the aircraft. Other devices such as compact disc players, portable palm top and lap top computers, cassette players, personal electronic organisers or personal video games may be used during cruise only, NOT when the aircraft is taking off and landing.

The only way I can get a man to touch me at this age is plastic surgery.
JOAN RIVERS
She doesn’t understand the concept of Roman numerals; she thought we just fought in World War Eleven. She’s so hairy that, when she lifted up her arm, I thought it was Tina Turner in her armpit.
This issue we remember some classic one-liners from American comedian Joan Rivers, who sadly passed away in early September, at the age of 81. Is she fat? Her favourite food is seconds. Looking 50 is great – if you’re 60. I have no sex appeal; if my husband didn’t toss and turn, we’d never have had the kid. I told my mother-in-law that my house was her house, and she said, “Get the hell off my property.”
Before we make love, my husband takes a painkiller. My love life is like a piece of Swiss cheese. Most of it is missing, and what’s there stinks. The first time I see a jogger smiling, I’ll consider it. I don’t exercise. If God wanted me to bend over, he’d have put diamonds on the floor.

My daughter and I are very close, we speak every single day. I call her every day and I say the same thing, “Pick up, I know you’re there.” Grandchildren can be f---ing annoying! How many times can you go “And the cow goes moo and the pig goes oink”? It’s like talking to a supermodel. All babies look like Renee Zellweger pushed against a glass window. Jennifer Lawrence called me and said she was so embarrassed about falling. I said, “Relax, my darling. It’s not the first time a girl got on all fours on her way to getting an Oscar, and it was all right.” People say that money is not the key to happiness, but I always figured if you have enough money, you can have a key made. Don’t make friends with your dogs! The sons of bitches will literally die ahead of you and cause you grief. n

Never pick a fight with an ugly person, they’ve got nothing to lose. Beer commercials usually show big men, manly men, doing manly things: “You’ve just killed a small animal. It’s time for a light beer.” Why not have a realistic beer commercial, with a realistic thing about beer, where someone goes, “It's five o'clock in the morning. You've just pissed on a dumpster. It's Miller time.” I was once on a German talk show, and this woman said to me, “Mr Williams, why do you think there isn’t much comedy in Germany?” And I said, “Did you ever think you killed all the funny people?”
REMEMBERING
ROBIN
If I could light my own farts I could fly to the moon, or at least Uranus.
After the tragic news of his passing in August, we re-live some golden one-liners from comic genius Robin Williams.
My God. We’ve had cloning in the South for years. It’s called cousins.
We may all be dead and gone, but Keith Richards will still be there with five cockroaches. He'll be going, “I smoked your uncle, did you know that?” I’ve been watching a little bit of porn since I’ve been on the road. [Raises his hand and “speaks” through it, a la a ventriloquist dummy] “A little?” [Pushes his hand down.] Shut up. I had my back waxed once by two women... and at one point they said, “Do you mind if we take a break?” Ahh, the manly sport of golf, where you can dress like a pimp and no one will care. As if it’s not bad enough that they make porn movies, they make porn movies of my movies! They made Good Will Humping. It's OK. Wet Dreams May Cum, all right. Snatch Adams? That was scary. A clown with a strap-on. F--- off! Now, Popeye, I would watch. n
