Speaking of competitions, we have the run-down on the national WorldSkills event, including names of some of the winners, on page 16. We also caught up with gold medalwinning plumber Dylan Di Martino, to find out what set him apart from the rest in Perth. The warmer months often also see us focusing more on our health, and this issue we have brought you a fitness program for legs, along with the details of the new initiative challenging tradies to replace all drinks with water for 30 days. Having tried this myself, I can definitely recommend it as a great, easy way to generally feel better and lose weight. Thinking more about your wellbeing is also the goal of the Movember committee, so don’t forget to start growing out those moustaches in the first week of this month, as you raise funds and awareness for men’s health.

As the weather starts to heat up and we count down the weeks until the Christmas-New Year holidays, everyone looks for more things to do beyond the front door. In response, we’ve pulled together a gig guide for the music lovers; some film festival info and giveaways for the movie buffs; the latest on National Carpenters’ Day for the chippys; and details on how to enter the Reece DIY Plumbing Disasters Competition for the plumbers.

Finally, we had the privilege of interviewing a member of Australia’s Defence Force, Katrina Kenny, for our cover story this issue. Her role in the Navy has seen her snorkelling in Vanuatu, hanging out with orang-utans in Malaysia and touring a volcano in PNG, so it’s not all hard work! ‘Til next time, enjoy the issue and get your entry into the XXXX Island competition!

SHONKY AS From dangerous dummies to dodgy claims, the annual CHOICE Shonky Awards name and shame some of Australia’s worst products and services, in a bid to get businesses to lift their game. The 2014 CHOICE Shonky Awards winners were revealed in mid October and included Arnott’s Tim Tams, the Commonwealth Bank, Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite and Kmart swimwear. As a big fan of the mighty Tim Tam here at The Tradie, we were a little shocked to hear of its inclusion. But CHOICE discovered that the new “peanut butter”-flavoured Tim Tams contained no peanut butter, had two fewer biscuits per pack and cost the same as a regular packet of Tim Tams! See vanfest.com.au KELLY GANG They may not be touring right now (or in the near future) but The Tradie has fallen hard for brutal metal rockers Dead Kelly. The band was formed when one little bloke (“Pine Cone Throat”) and one big bloke (“Roo Killer”) decided to write some metal together, after both having played for years in bands with a range of different styles. With the age of the internet upon them, Pine Cone and Roo decided that Dead Kelly would be an experiment to see how much exposure you could get without playing shows or even being a real band per se. And, after uploading some songs and videos to various sites, the feedback Dead Kelly has received is nothing short of insane. Even though their music is available for free from their website (deadkelly.net), the band has had a lot of offers from people to pay for their music, so they have since added it to iTunes and other online music stores. You can also buy their merch’ through their website too. But, if you don’t want to buy anything, the guys are also totally down with that. All they really want is to read the positive comments people send them via social media and email. So, keep ‘em coming tradies! See deadkelly.net or facebook. com/deadkellyofficial T

he Australian Open is the country’s most prestigious golf championship and the one every player wants to win. It has a rich, century-old history and always draws the nation’s best players, who each vie for the Stonehaven Cup and $1.25 million in prize money. Golfing superstars such as Adam Scott, Rory McIlroy, Gunn Yang, and Ollie Schniederjans have been confirmed to play at this year’s tournament, leaving fans of the sport eagerly awaiting the event. The past five winners of the Australian Open (in order) include: Rory, Peter Senior, Greg Chalmers, Geoff Ogilvy and Adam Scott. Rory said he is excited to return to Sydney to defend his title. “I had a terrific experience last year in front of great crowds,” he said. “They really loved the showdown between Adam and I and it proved to be a really important win for me.” Rory won the 2012 US PGA Championship at Kiawah Island and the 2011 US Open at the Congressional Country Club, among seven PGA Tour victories to date. With his win in Liverpool, he joined the record books with Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only three players to have won three major championships by the age of 25. “I believe my return to form was given real momentum in Australia last year and I’ve heard

The Tradie’s editor,

Hilary Board, caught up with Katrina Kenny from the Australian Defence Force, to find out how to join and some of the perks of her role.

What motivated you to join the Australian Defence Force? I joined the Australian Navy in 1998 at the age of 18. I was looking for something exciting and different from what all my friends wanted to do. I couldn’t see myself being a teacher or doing something that was considered normal. I had applied and been accepted into university to study marine biology, but the reality of being a marine biologist was that there weren’t many jobs within the industry, so I knew I wouldn’t be guaranteed to have employment after my degree. The Navy presented a stable career and a challenging work environment. It also meant I could see the world and Australia while being paid a great wage. How did you enter the Navy? I entered as General Entry. General Entry roles are more hands-on, whereas the Officer Entry roles are more management. I prefer doing things myself and am very hands-on. I can’t sit back and let someone else do all the work. General Entry gave me this chance, as well as the opportunity to learn leadership and management skills along the way. Within General Entry there are technical positions and non-technical positions. Technical are taught a specialised trade or technical qualification, just like they would at a TAFE or college (e.g. vehicle mechanics, electricians, carpenters etc). While nontechnical jobs cover a wide range of careers, from healthcare to combat. All training is provided by the Australian Defence Force [ADF] and students normally receive civilian accreditation after a qualifying period (e.g. cooks, drivers and storemen etc).

ISSUE 13 // NOVEMBER 2014

www.thetradie.com.au

What does your current job involve? I’m a combat systems supervisor for mine warfare. I work on Mine Hunter coastal ships, where I manage sonar operators who use sonar to look at objects on the seabed. If something of interest is found, we use a remote operated vehicle or clearance divers to visually identify the object. One of my many ancillary roles is being a manager to upwards of nine junior sailors. Have you found being a woman in a maledominated work environment challenging? I haven’t found it challenging at all. When you are out at sea and everyone is working together, gender is irrelevant. As long as you can do the job, that’s the important thing.

“All combat positions will be open to women in 2016.” What challenges have you faced? One of the biggest would be overcoming my chronic sea sickness so I can do my job! Have there been any hairy moments on the job? The hairiest moment was probably on one particular trip from Sydney to Cairns on a Mine Hunter. The swell was so big that we thought the ship might roll over. A Mine Hunter is a small ship that is quite top heavy. It would never actually roll over, but everyone held their breath at the time. What have been some of the highlights of working in the Navy? All the different people I have had the pleasure of working with, as well as the fantastic places I have visited. I have been to Cambodia, Thailand, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, Singapore, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia and Indonesia. I have spent anywhere from two days to six days in any one country. It isn’t all hard work when we get there either! We get lots of time off to be tourists when we aren’t required for work. I’ve visited Angkor Wat, seen the Bridge on the River Kwai, snorkelled in Vanuatu, seen the orang-utans in Malaysia, been on many battlefield tours and took a volcano tour in Papua New Guinea, just to name a few things. When we aren’t travelling overseas, we are

exercising in beautiful Jervis Bay in New South Wales, or travelling around Australia. Sounds amazing! How often do you get to travel overseas each year? When I’m posted to a ship, I travel overseas one to two times a year, depending on the ship’s program. Sometimes the ship won’t go overseas during the year. Most trips have been between two and three months long and usually begin or end with a multinational exercise, where we get to test our skills against other nations in war games. What do you like to do during your free time? Since I am away a lot with work, I am quite a homebody when I’m not on a ship. I am in the process of renovating a house I own in Queensland when I get the chance to go up there. I also like getting out in nature and enjoy hiking and travelling abroad. Which tradie job have you enjoyed most during your home renovation? I have really enjoyed the painting. I’ve been learning how to prepare the walls, repair holes and achieve a decent finish. We learnt a few painting skills after recruit training, so I know how to cut out rust and prepare the surface on a ship, but it isn’t quite like what is required when painting a house. What do the next 12 months hold for you? I am working at Defence Force Recruiting in Melbourne for the next 12 months, as part of the Specialist Recruiting Team – Women. We hold mentoring and information sessions to inform women that there are many jobs they can do in the ADF, and they don’t need to pigeonhole themselves into traditional roles. All combat positions in the ADF will be open to women in 2016. And the role of clearance diver in the Navy has been open to women since June this year. What does the clearance diver role involve? Clearance divers are the ADF’s specialist divers. Their tasks include specialist diving missions to depths of 54 metres, surface and underwater demolitions, and the safe rendering and disposal of conventional explosive ordnance and improvised explosive devices. They are required to serve in a Mine Hunter ship, as well as one of our Clearance Diving Teams. Some clearance divers elect to be employed in Special Forces roles. What has been the response from women to the clearance diver role since it opened up to them in June? There have been a few women interested in becoming clearance divers. The reality is that it is a physically hard job and not something everybody wants to do. We certainly are getting interest though, which is fantastic to see, and the quality of candidates I have seen so far is very reassuring. The word is still getting out there that women are now allowed to join as a clearance diver, so I expect numbers will grow as more people become aware of the change. Mel, Spinner and Mark

“A lot of consideration has gone into what’s on the island and available, to ensure each trip is really memorable.” The Tradie caught up with XXXX, along with XXXX Island’s hosts/ caretakers, Mark Wheatley and Mel Legge, to learn more about their little piece of paradise.

Where did the idea of XXXX Island come from? XXXX: We discovered a little while ago that mates don’t spend as much time together as they used to. We wanted to do something about this because – at XXXX GOLD – we think “mate” time is pretty important. So we came up with the idea of a place where friends can kick back for the weekend and enjoy hanging out together. After searching some of Australia’s spectacular coastline, we found an idyllic spot on the southern Great Barrier Reef, which became XXXX Island! It’s the perfect destination for mates to enjoy what we like to call “the good life”. How did you get the gig of host/ caretaker on XXXX Island? Mark: Mel and I applied for the role after seeing it advertised. We thought it looked like the best job in the world and now we’re lucky enough to be living our dream and working in one of the most beautiful places in Australia! Can you describe a typical day at “the office”? Mark: Every morning I get woken up by Spinner, our dog. He likes to

shadow me during the day as I work all over the Island and do some general maintenance. We have guests who arrive each Thursday, so my priority is making sure everything is ready early on in the week. I transport XXXX GOLD and other supplies off the boat when it arrives, which helps keep my fitness levels up! Mel: The weekdays are pretty busy, as we get ready to welcome the six guests who have won trips, along with each of their three guests. They have all had to earn their spot on the island, either by skill, luck or know-how, and seeing their faces light up when they step onto the island is magic! If you had to describe the island in five words, what would they be? Mark: Ultimate destination for mates’ trips! Why is it the ultimate getaway? Mark: It’s an incredibly beautiful location, where mates can enjoy a oncein-a-lifetime trip and spend some quality time together. A lot of consideration has gone into what’s on the island and available to our guests, to ensure each trip is really memorable. There is the “loo-with-a-view”, fishing shack, and a bar with unrivalled views. There is no place on Earth like it! If you are lucky enough to win a trip here with your mates, I guarantee you’ll still be talking about it over a XXXX GOLD in 20 years.

Mel: Your time on the island is what you make it, so you can be as active or chilled out as you like. There are lots of great ways to while away the hours, like fishing, beach cricket, touch footy, a swim in the ocean, playing a round of one-hole golf, enjoying a XXXX GOLD in the bar, watching a sporting match or enjoying tucker on the barbie. XXXX Island is also a great place for ladies to come and enjoy the “good life’’ too. What’s been the response to XXXX Island since it “opened”? XXXX: We’ve had a phenomenal response – with people doing everything they can to win a trip to XXXX Island! We’ve had 24 mates [six groups of four] stay on the island every weekend over the past two years and no one ever wants to leave. We think there is no better place in the world than XXXX Island and everyone who comes completely agrees. For more information on the XXXX Island competition, stay tuned for the December issue of The Tradie. T

I

t’s the carpenter who makes sure people have a solid foundation on which to build their home, and it’s the carpenter who is the last one to lock up and hand over the keys. But carpenters don’t just build houses, they make dreams a reality! These tradies have been undervalued for too long and National Carpenters Day aims to address this by increasing the profile of carpenters within the community. In 2013, more than 10,000 carpenters celebrated National Carpenters Day. At barbecues all over the country, carpenters were supported by major companies and private operators, who performed tool demonstrations, ran competitions and gave away products. There were awards too, with Nicholas Power from Victoria taking out Carpenter of the Year and Bradley Altmann from Queensland taking out Apprentice Carpenter of the Year. They won a Paslode pack, Hitachi tool packs and Hitachi screw driver (valued at $5485 in total).

CARPENTER

CALL OUT Now in its sixth year, National Carpenters Day maintains an important spot in the trades calendar. It takes place on Friday, November 21, 2014.

This year, Melbourne Polytechnic’s (previously known as the Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE) Heidelberg campus is hosting the main barbecue on Friday, November 21. The 2014 Carpenter of the Year and Apprentice Carpenter of the Year will both be notified beforehand of their wins and then presented with trophies and their cash and product prizes at the barbecue. (Nominations/applications closed on November 1.) See www.carpentersday.com.au for more information.

DID YOU KNOW? Almost 350,000 businesses in the construction industry employ more than a million people. Carpenters and joiners make up almost 100,000 of these workers.

The Reece DIY Disasters Competition is back for 2014. Send in a photo of the worst DIY plumbing gaffe you’ve come across, and you could win $5000!

D

uring its annual hunt for Australia’s worst DIY plumbing disasters, Reece admittedly enjoys a good laugh. But, on the serious side, the competition highlights the dangers involved when amateurs take on the role of plumber, and therefore reinforces the importance of using a licensed plumber for all home plumbing projects.

For the judging panel, Reece has enlisted the help of five fellows, who represent all areas of the plumbing sector:

As with previous years, Reece is calling on all of its Account Customers to seek out Australia’s worst DIY plumbing gaffes, photograph them and then upload to the website (reece.com.au/diydisasters) for the chance to win $5000. In addition to submitting an image, Reece is also asking entrants this year to provide a short description of what they’d do to fix the plumbing disaster. But hurry, entries close on November 14.

orldSkills is the only event on the national calendar that brings together such a diverse range of professions, including automotive, building and construction, computing and business, hospitality and client services industries. The aim of the competition is to showcase the skills of Australia’s best young Vocational Education and Training (VET) students, apprentices and trainees and highlight the diversity and opportunities available in Australia’s Vocational Education and Training sector. Each of the competitors earned their position on the national stage in September after their medal-winning performances in the regional competitions, which were held across the 30 WorldSkills Australia regions last year. From September 18-20 the competitors battled it out for the prestigious title of

The announcement of the 2015 Skillaroos will be made later this year and they will then head to Brazil to represent Australia and their industry at the 43rd WorldSkills International Competition in São Paolo, Brazil, in August. Also in 2015, WorldSkills Australia will hold their regional competitions around the country between March and October. These are organised by dedicated volunteers and run over one or two days in either a public forum or a training facility (such as a TAFE Institute). Medallists from the 2015 round of regional competitions will then have the opportunity to compete at the 2016 WorldSkills Australia National Competition. of them, so plumbing became a part of my life very early on. I can remember going to work with my Dad on weekends when I was in primary school. I loved it and found the trade incredibly interesting. I seemed to have a natural talent for it too. What’s an average day like for you? I’m currently working for my Dad’s business, Paul’s Plumbing Service, in Melbourne. An average work day starts at 5am, and I’m travelling to the first job by 6am. It’s all systems go until lunchtime, when we stop briefly. Then it’s all hustle and bustle until 4pm. My days are quite varied – no two are the same. One day I could be doing a rough in, another installing a roof, and another in a trench installing a drain. What do you enjoy most about plumbing? I am good at what I do so the work, while challenging, is a lot of fun. I love that no two days are the same and that I learn something new almost every day. Most of all, I love working alongside my Dad and brother. What are some of the negatives? Being outside when it’s raining, windy and cold. Another negative would be that sometimes you have to work under floors, which isn’t a lot of fun. What do you get up to in your spare time? In my spare time I like to relax and hang out with my friends. We often like to go clubbing,

It was a real eye opener to see other trades and the tasks they had to complete. The competition was physically and mentally demanding, requiring extreme focus and concentration. The new HTC One M8 is targeting music lovers via its powerful front-facing speakers with HTC optimised audio software. HTC is promising that the speakers will last longer and enhance all media audio.

Apple iPhone 6 – Catching Up The iPhone 6 is playing catch up and Apple has also released its first big phone, the iPhone 6 Plus (same phone, bigger screen). The iPhone 6 is the only dual-core phone surveyed here and has the slowest speed rating (compared with the other four phones). It also suffers from the second-worst talk time (before the battery dies) and the worst battery stand-by time (compared with the other phones here). On the flipside, the new iPhone is super thin and super light, with a width of 6.7 millimetres and a weight of only 129 grams – less than a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder! Disturbingly though, some owners have reported that the new iPhone's aluminium body has actually bent in their pocket. Apple recently responded to these complaints, describing them as “extremely rare” and going on to say that “iPhones are designed, engineered and manufactured to be both beautiful and sturdy”. The iPhone 6 also has some cool features, such as time-lapse recording and super slow-mo but it’s on the expensive side, with an $870 price tag for the 6, and $1000 for the 6 Plus.

Apart from the pumping new sound, the M8 body is constructed from one solid piece of aluminium. Featuring a curved back and a polished glass screen, the phone’s design has won rave reviews.

at a time. It even allows you to take photos under water and features a dedicated shutter button for your “merman” moments. The Xperia Z2 is slightly heavy and large, but despite this it is a solid contender for best phone of the bunch reviewed here.

The downside is its surprisingly weak fourmegapixel rear camera. By comparison, the iPhone 6 has eight megapixels, and the Samsung Galaxy S5 has 16.

Nokia Lumia 930 – Not Android, Not Apple Windows has been in the smartphone market for a while now with its dedicated Windows phones, but it’s having trouble securing a slice of the market. The Lumia 930 has the worst talk time of all the phones in this article, and is also the heaviest and thickest, coming in at nearly a centimetre thick.

Sony Xperia Z2 – Happy Snapper The happy snapper will love the Sony Xperia Z2, with its powerful, professional-quality rear camera. Helped by Sony’s expertise in camera making, the Z2 features a 20.7-megapixel camera and a massive 5.2-inch screen to view your images. The Sony is good for adventure too, being fully waterproof to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes

While its 20-megapixel camera is solid on paper, it lacks basic features such as digital image stabilisation and HDR, which are something every other phone offers. Redeeming qualities include the Lumia 930’s large standard internal storage (32GB) and wireless charging. Simply place the phone on the charging mat and the electricity transfers without the need for a cable. T

ue to a number of changes over the past month, apprentice carpenter Henry Hand needed to find a new employer to work with and help him complete the final six months of his apprenticeship. “[Fortunately] Henry had joined the HIA’s Apprenticeship Mentoring Program as a carpentry apprentice when the program began in 2012 [after gaining a contract with the Federal Government],” HIA apprentice mentor, Lauren McDonald, said. This program is focused on apprentices in skills shortage areas completing their trade through access to available support networks. “Since then, Henry has been an active member of the program and a pleasure to deal with and I could see that he was committed to completing his carpentry apprenticeship,” Lauren said. “He had been directly indentured with one employer for the whole period of his apprenticeship so, when he decided it was time to move on, I knew we needed to find someone who would fit in with where he was at in his apprenticeship.” This is where the Tradie Exchange was able to help. “When the call-out was made, we were able to reach out to our network, as Tradie Exchange 22

has a number of builders in our Contact Book,” Tradie Exchange’s, Aroha Blake, said. “It was great timing for us, as we’d had a number of discussions in the previous week with builders who were actively looking for carpenters, or said they were thinking about taking on an apprentice. “Next, we introduced the HIA team to Corey Woodcroft Constructions’ work across residential and commercial projects, as they were actively seeking carpenters. Once the connection between HIA and Corey had been made, everybody was able to work through their requirements and Henry was offered a position. Since then, Corey has kept in touch, and is really committed to helping Henry complete his apprenticeship.” By working together, the HIA Apprenticeship Mentoring team and the Tradie Exchange were able to help Henry find a suitable employer quick smart. All in all this was a fabulous outcome for everyone – especially Henry. SERIOUS STUFF

THE HOW

y h w and of aspects to it, one of which is Part 2 C, headed “Statutory Warranties”, contained in sections 18 A–G, and these provisions (broadly relating to defective work practices and materials) are implied in every contract for residential building work. Before doing any work on a residential building under three storeys, the licensed building contractor must take out what is known as Home Warranty Insurance, or “HOW Insurance”. In turn, that insurance (paid for by the builder) is designed to protect the homeowner in the event of any defective structural or non-structural work or materials in the construction.

This month “the tradies’ lawyer”, Peter Murphy, looks at the perils of the Home Building Act.

The warranty implied in every residential building contract, which cannot be excluded, provides a time limit to make a claim under the Act. Until recently this was a period of seven years from completion. It is now due to be changed in December to two years from the date of the Occupation Certificate.

I

However, if the builder fails to obtain HOW Insurance and carries out residential building work regardless, which had happened in this case, he is not entitled to be paid for that work under Part 6 of the Act and section 94 (i) (b), even on what is known as a quantum meruit or “a fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay” basis.

I took me a little while to calm my new friend down and get the story. First up, there is no such Act as the “Residential Building Act”. What my soon-to-be client meant to say was the “NSW Home Building Act 1989,” which is soon to be amended. The Act has a number

Fortunately there is a “saving provision” under section 94 (1A) of the very same Act, which allows a court or tribunal to award an amount to the builder if it considers it just and equitable on that very basis. Further, section 94 (3) provides that the uninsured residential building work ceases to be uninsured work for the purposes of the section if a contract of insurance for the work is subsequently obtained.

had just dropped into my early opener when a young man leant across my table. “You the tradies’ bloke?” he asked. “I’ve got a problem for you mate.” “What’s that mate?” I asked. “Getting paid – that’s it in a nutshell,” he said, sitting down beside me. “Bloke says he’s not going to pay me and that I’ve broken the Residential Building Act.”

Without further ado, I told my new client to contact his insurer or broker immediately. Later that day I met up with him again and pieced together the remainder of the sorry tale. A mate of his had decided to go surfing in Indonesia after agreeing to build a large garden extension on a client’s house in one of those harbour-side suburbs of Sydney. My client was “new” to the game, to put it mildly, but he was a qualified tradesman, he had his Builders Licence and he was ready to go. And go he did, and having almost finished the job he put in a claim for a large progress payment. It was then that the homeowner gave him the news that he was not going to be paid anything as he had breached the Act and he could get off the land. Pretty final it seemed, but we needed to take it step by step. The first thing was to get the HOW Insurance in place, albeit retrospectively, and “cure” the uninsured work. We’re heading off to the tribunal next month, despite spending a fruitless hour or so trying to convince the homeowner that surely he understood the work my client had already done for him constituted “unjust enrichment” – he’d got something for nothing, in other words. Some people just want to play hard ball for no reason it seems. But the message here for tradies is twofold. First, never do residential building work unless you have taken out HOW Insurance. And second, beware of taking over work for mates, whether the surf’s up or not! See petermurphyassoc.com.au for more information. T

Chimichurri Ingredients • 1 bunch of basil, leaves picked • 1 bunch of flat leaf parsley, leaves picked • 1 knob of garlic • 2 tbsp of dried oregano or half a bunch of oregano • 1 green chilli, seeds removed and roughly chopped • extra virgin olive oil • sea salt and pepper • sherry vinegar, to taste Directions Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend until a chunky pesto is formed. Season with the salt, pepper and vinegar. Store in the fridge until needed.

Lamb Shoulder Ingredients • 1 lamb shoulder 1.5kg • 2 cartons of chicken stock (or 1.5L of homemade chicken stock if you prefer) • 1 sprig of rosemary • 1 leek, 1 stick celery, 1 carrot, 3 garlic cloves, roughly chopped • 100ml of olive oil • 2 tbsp of chimichurri • sea salt and pepper Directions Preheat oven to 180C. SALMON

KEBABS Heading into summer, there’s nothing better than seafood on the barbie. Co-hosts of TV’s Hook, Line & Sinker, Andrew Hart and Nick Duigan show us how it’s done.

Ingredients • 1-2 Huon salmon fillets (approx 1.5kg), skin on, cut into 2.5cm chunks • 1 green capsicum or asparagus, cut into 2.5cm pieces • 1 red onion, cut into 2.5cm pieces • 2 cups of mushrooms or zucchini, sliced • 1 lime, juice and zest • ½ cup of light soy sauce • ¼ cup of creamed honey • 2 garlic cloves, minced • salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste • 12-16 long bamboo skewers, soaked in water • 2 limes, juiced • ¼ cup of creamed honey Directions Place the salmon and vegetables into a large flat dish. In a small bowl, whisk together the lime juice and zest, soy sauce, honey and garlic until the honey is dissolved, then pour over the salmon and vegies. Season with the salt and pepper, toss everything gently together, cover and refrigerate for six hours. Pre-heat the barbecue to medium-high and oil the grill. Alternate the marinated salmon and vegetables onto the soaked skewers. In a small bowl, whisk together the extra lime juice and honey. Place the skewers on the hot grill and cook for 10 minutes, basting often with the honey-lime mixture and turning once. See hooklinesinker.tv for more recipes and fishing tips.

FIGHTING FIT

BEACH LEGS By: Steve Roberts

FOR: People who need/want to improve muscular strength and lower body performance, which will tone the butt, thighs and calves while increasing aerobic fitness. EQUIPMENT: Perform these with just your bodyweight or add weights if desired. Use blocks (or a step), towel and open space – preferably a park or beach. BEACH LEGS PROGRAM: As summer fast approaches and swimwear replaces the winter woollies, it becomes time to expose some of those hidden bits. If you are like a lot of my clients, this can be an area of great concern, especially if you didn’t maintain your lower half during the “off peak” (or cold) season. But fear no more, as I have designed a four-week beach legs program that will build the legs and rear you envy on others. It should be done at least three times a week, with a day’s rest in between each training session. During the days off, you could focus on other areas of your health and mental wellbeing.

About Steve Steve Roberts is an exercise

Four-Week Program TEMPO TRAIN TO DELIVER RESULTS The speed at which you lift a weight or do an exercise has great consequences on the development of the muscles. The workouts include a tempo designation for each exercise using three digits: E.g. 211, perhaps, or 11X or X. The first number: The number of seconds to lower the weight or body e.g. when doing a push up, you are in an upward position: holding your body weight up, you lower your body to the ground. Thus, the first number in the tempo column tells you how slowly this should be done. Try to control the weight or body without using momentum or assistance (such as swinging). Where X appears, this means that it is done as explosively as possible. The second number: This is the transition time between the lowering and lifting parts of the exercise. It tells you how long to pause. The third number: This is the speed of the lift (concentric or shortening) phase. If it is a 1 or 2 then you’ll have that time to lift, which is fast. If it’s a cross (X) instead of a numeral, the exercise is a power exercise and needs be done with extreme speed.

Pre-Training Warm up

Description Always perform a 5-10-min aerobic exercise that gradually increases heart rate. Include Range Of Motion (ROM) exercises as per movements in your workout. E.g. dynamic leg stretches.

Sure, that’s just two exercises, but do the sums: if you complete the entire routine - from 15 down to 1 - you’ll do 120 repetitions of each exercise. That’s 240 repetitions. RM target

A new campaign is encouraging tradies to swap sugary drinks for water for 30 days to show that even a small change such as this can make a difference to your waistline and your wallet. Former The Block contestant, Dale Vine, is taking up the H30 Challenge, and he wants others to join him.

T

he H30 Challenge asks people to make a simple 30-day pledge to replace every sugary drink with water. The aim of the VicHealth initiative is to help establish healthier habits, with water becoming the main choice of beverage in the long-term. Sugary drinks include sugar-sweetened soft drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks, fruit drinks, ready-to-drink iced tea, flavoured water and cordial. These beverages are the largest source of sugars in the Australian diet and their high intake is associated with poorer health outcomes, such as increased risk of weight gain and tooth decay.

Disclaimer

• Stretch muscles used or muscles that are tight using static stretches and recovery: walking, ice baths or swimming session. • Eat a healthy range of foods and drink up to 2-3 litres of water/day. Limit the amount of alcohol you drink as it can have a negative impact on your recovery and performance.

H30 CHALLENGE

Repeat as many rounds (or cycles) of the given exercises and repetitions as possible in 8 minutes. On the last rep of the final exercise, shout out the set number completed (e.g. shout 1 after you have completed the last rep of the last exercise to signal the completion of one cycle). Record how many full cycles performed and compete against it the next time.

The Block’s Dale Vine said, “Many people just don’t realise how much sugar is in a lot of the drinks they consume on a daily basis. It all adds up, so I’m going to reverse that habit by switching to water and will see how my body thanks me.” Those keen to take up the challenge can join any time. Simply sign up at www.h30challenge.com.au, choose a start date that is convenient for you, swap sugary drinks for water for 30 days and reap the benefits.

VicHealth CEO, Jerril Rechter, said, “Participants may be surprised at just how much sugar these drinks contain. One 600-milliltire bottle of regular soft drink can contain 16 teaspoons of sugar. So if you drink one a day, that’s almost 23 kilograms of sugar a year! While we encourage ... [everyone] to drink more water, there is a particular focus on 18 to 34 year-olds, who are some of the highest consumers of sugary drinks.”

TRADIES WITH A SWEET TOOTH A survey by Incolink of 129 building and construction apprentices in the seven TAFEs in metropolitan Melbourne has revealed that: • Two-thirds consumed energy drinks on a regular basis. • One in five consumed energy drinks first thing in the morning. • One in four consumed energy drinks at work or at TAFE. TH L A E H S ’ N ME STATS • Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian men. • Each year, 20,000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed in Australia. • Testicular cancer is the second most common cancer, behind skin cancers, in young men aged 18-39 years.

R E S I A R R HAI The month of the moustache is here again! So go on, join the Movember crew, grow the ‘stache and help raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues.

S

ince 2003, the Movember Foundation has raised a whopping $580 million for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health problems, and funded about 800 men’s health programs in 21 countries. Last year alone, Movember recruited 122,571 participants across Australia and raised $26.4 million for the cause. To get onboard for 2014 and become a “Mo Bro”, all you need to do is sign up online at movember.com and start clean-shaven in the first week of November. Then, let it grow for the rest of the month while you get friends, family and colleagues to donate to your efforts for the cause, and spark conversations about men’s health issues.

• On average, six deaths per day in Australia are attributed to suicide – five of these are men.

Subsequently, more than four men die every hour from potentially preventable conditions in Australia. What’s more, the average life expectancy for Australian men is nearly five years less than women (79.5 years compared with 84 for women). Using the moustache as a catalyst for conversation, Movember hopes to bring about change by providing men with the opportunity to learn and talk about their health more openly and by encouraging them to take action. Movember is committed to investing funds in initiatives that support prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health. See movember.com for more information.

women, who proactively manage and publicly address their health concerns. As a result, levels of awareness, understanding and funding support for men’s health issues lag significantly behind that of other causes.

Women, known as “Mo Sistas”, can get involved too, by signing up at movember.com as team captains, recruiting “Mo Bros”, helping to raise money via donations and fundraising events and encouraging the men in their lives to take action when it comes to their health.

Ever since I started to get recognition I've picked out certain fans and reversestalked them. Behind every great man is a woman rolling her eyes. If I’m not back in five minutes… just wait longer. I just want to be killer funny. You know, kick ass, piss in your pants, run out of the theatre, rip your dick off and throw yourself into traffic funny! If there had been Ritalin when I was a kid, I wouldn’t be here now. If we ever get married, we’re just going to put helmets on, run into each other from a hundred yards, and smash together like rams. When I met Mary, I got that oldfashioned romantic feeling where I’d do anything to bone her. (Dumb &
