The Gold Coast will host 45 matches across the two-day rugby event in October. It will feature some of the most exciting rugby players from 16 countries, including Australia, Fiji, Samoa, American Samoa, New Zealand, Japan, South Africa, Scotland, England, Wales, France, Portugal, Kenya, Argentina, Canada 6

Stein Time Get your lederhosen out… Oktoberfest is right around the corner! Aussies have lovingly adopted this German beer-swilling festival and there will be celebrations taking place in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane throughout September and October. So grab your bier and bratwurst and enjoy our guide to some of the best places to say “Prost” this year. By: Zinzan Clements HISTORY Oktoberfest is a worldwide celebration of German culture that originally started out as a 16-day fair in Munich. to tap the first keg of the festival! For the foodies, Lowenbrau will also be hosting the Uber Mega Oktoberfest Sausage Challenge. Participants have 30 minutes to eat two metres of sausage, chips or salad (more than two kilograms in total) or pay $49 for failing! The Bavarian Bier Café’s six venues will be offering bier education sessions, where you can sample all five of the official Oktoberfest beers: Lowenbrau, Spaten, Hacker-Pschorr, Paulaner and Hofbrau, which have all been imported from Munich for the occasion. What’s more, every Sunday between 3pm and 6pm, the café will offer a free upgrade to 500ml for any 300ml official Oktoberfest beer ordered, to help partygoers get into the spirit of the festival. Where: LÖWENBRÄU KELLER Open: 10am-late, seven days. Phone: (02) 9247 7785 Email: reservations@lowenbrau.com.au Where: BAVARIAN BIER CAFÉ YORK STREET Open: 11am to midnight, seven days Email: reservations@bavarianbiercafe.com

A range of competitions will also be held at Brisbane’s Oktoberfest. You can enter the Bavarian Strongman Competition or try to take out the best beard in Brisbane with the Beardmeister title. Or, for the pretty frauleins, there’s also the Miss Oktoberfest Brisbane Competition. Stay entertained throughout the festival with yodelers, German dancers and the Bavarian Oktoberfest Band – specially flown in from Munich. If all the dancing and drinking have helped you work up an appetite, you can grab some German meatloaf, pork knuckle or wurst and head to the Munich Biergarten. Families are also catered for, with Sundays allocated as family fun days. There will be a Kinder-Zone, where the kids can get on rides, have fun at the petting zoo, or enjoy face painting and a puppet show. What’s more, all rides on Friday afternoons and evenings are free. When: October 10-12 and October 17-19 Where: RNA Showgrounds, Gregory Terrace, Bowen Hills. Tickets: Online (cheapest option, with special offers) or at the gate for $17 on Sundays, $19 on Fridays, or $24 on Saturdays. MELBOURNE Now in its fourth year, Melbourne’s Oktoberfest in the Gardens will be held at Birrarung Marr Park, on the north bank of the Yarra River, on Saturday, October 25. Just like Munich, Oktoberfest in the Gardens will feature a massive outdoor beer hall, where you can sample a range of imported and local beers, cider, wine and other beverages. Outside the beer hall you’ll find authentic German food stalls and several bars dotted around the gardens.

BRISBANE Brisbane Oktoberfest celebrations are the biggest in Australia, and are listed as one of the top 10 Oktoberfests outside Germany! Last year the event at the RNA Showgrounds hosted 36,000 guests – all keen to experience the German culture, food and beer. The heart of the festival is the Oktoberfest tent, which is decorated in true Munich Oktoberfest style, with most of the decorations being flown in from Germany for the Brisbane event. The festival-goers follow suit, with 50 per cent of last year’s crowd donning traditional German costume. The festival officially starts with Brisbane’s Lord Mayor ceremonially tapping the first keg. But there will be more than just beer on offer this year, with the esteemed Brogsitter Winery, established in the 1600s on the banks of the Ahr River in Germany, offering red, white and sparkling wines.

Musicians, magicians, circus performers and even clowns will travel through the crowd, entertaining attendees. Games and competitions will also be held on a stage throughout the day. If you have the arms of a Norse god, you can enter the stein-holding challenge or, if you have an appetite, why not enter the bratwurst eating competition? The event will have a festive atmosphere during the afternoon, before heating up at night, with DJs taking the stage to help you destroy the dance floor. If tradition is more your style, you can also listen to classic German bands or see if you can start an avalanche with the yodelers. When: Saturday, October 25, 2pm-10pm Where: Birrarung Marr Park, next to Federation Square, Melbourne CBD Tickets: From $49.50. On sale now to those 18 years and over, at moshtix.com.au. Each pass includes a free beverage (of your choice), a commemorative stein, and a freshly baked German pretzel. T

GREAT REXPECTATIONS

Subaru’s new fourthgeneration WRX is the best-handling version of the pocket-rocket yet.

S

ubaru’s latest WRX is powered by a more responsive, new-generation 197-kilowatt FA Boxer engine, featuring directinjection turbocharged technology. There has also been a considerable improvement in fuel efficiency of 11.5 per cent, a dramatic interior upgrade and a significant lift in standard equipment levels. And for the first time in 10 years there is an automatic WRX, featuring the very latest in Subaru transmission technology: an amazing paddle-shift Sport Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission, with the option of a manual mode with eight-speed shifting. The WRX manual also lifts the gear count to six, with a sporty, slick stick-shifter. Despite all the added technology and specifications, the price of entry for WRX – from $38,990 (Manufacturer's List Price) – is less than the original version launched 20 years ago! The new WRX is a $1000 saving over the superseded entry-level model. But value, performance and technology do not come at the price of safety. In fact, the new WRX is super-safe – in line with Subaru’s entire new range. Additional safety features include a driver’s knee airbag, reversing camera and even better visibility, with wing mirrors located on the doors, reducing blind-spots. The highly respected and independent 12

ISSUE 11 // SEPTEMBER 2014

Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has given it a five-star rating for occupant safety. It also received “good” pedestrian and whiplash ratings. The WRX’s overall ANCAP score of 35.85 out of a possible 37 makes it the highest-ranking Subaru yet, in a range already renowned globally for its structural integrity. A new level of handling fun is offered thanks to symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, fully re-tuned suspension, stiffened structure, upgraded brakes, faster steering ratio and Active Torque Vectoring. A much greater use of high tensile steel produces both handling and safety benefits, and combined with stiffer suspension the result is an even more thrilling WRX driving experience. Bigger brake rotors with greater fade resistance add to WRX’s famed surefooted performance. Roomier inside, WRX introduces a new age of soft-touch high-quality interior surfaces, giving

it a sophisticated-yet-sporty cabin ambience. Entertainment is taken to a new level on Premium variants, with the introduction of a Harman Kardon® sound system, with Fujitsu Ten head unit. Push-button start with smartkey technology is also a new feature on WRX Premium. The fourth-generation WRX is available as a sedan only and comes in seven different colours: crystal black silica, crystal white pearl, dark grey metallic, galaxy blue silica, ice silver metallic, lightening red, and WR blue pearl. CALIFORNIA

LOVE

The Ferrari California T epitomises the sublime elegance, sportiness, versatility and exclusivity that have distinguished every California model since the 1950s.

L

ove a bit of fun behind the wheel? The Ferrari California T, with its retractable hard top and 2+ configuration, aims to please. Brimming with innovation, it’s also perfect for those who want a comfortable Grand Tourer they can use every day.

Turbo technology has an honourable 14

ISSUE 11 // SEPTEMBER 2014

The California T also sports the latest evolution of F1-Trac, which guarantees maximum acceleration out of corners, and CCM3 carbon-ceramic brakes integrated with the ESP 8.0 Premium system, which controls the high-performance ABS to deliver extremely short stopping distances (100 to 0 km/h in just 34 metres). The Ferrari Styling Centre, in collaboration with Pininfarina, radically reworked the California T’s design to endow it with a completely new personality, while still retaining its original dimensions. Its flanks are a homage to the 250 Testa Rossa’s famous pontoon-fender styling, with the front wing line stretching back towards the compact, muscular rear and bringing an aerodynamic sleekness and movement to the sides. The rear benefits from aerodynamic research, resulting in a new triple-fence diffuser. The air vents in the bonnet boost the efficiency of the front radiator, helping reduce its overall dimensions, while the lower section of the front bumper has been profiled to channel air to the intercoolers.

Like all Ferraris, the California T boasts cutting-edge technological solutions that make it absolutely unique. Most notable is its new direct-injection 3855cc V8 turbo engine, which punches out a massive 560 cv at 7500 rpm, yielding a specific power output of 145 cv/l, the highest in its category, as well as maximum torque of 755 Nm in 7th gear. These figures allow the California T to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds and deliver extraordinary acceleration – even in higher gears – producing a powerful sound that becomes even more impressive as revs increase. Trade: Industrial sandblaster Company: Atlas Abrasives, Sydney How long have you been in the industry? I purchased the business about seven years ago and found it to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. I have learnt a lot about the industry and also about running a small business. I have met heaps of great people as well. What is your average day like? As a small business owner working in both the factory and on site, there’s no typical day. Sometimes when we are busy I am on the tools, other times I load the trucks and get the jobs started. Some days I work from home or spend the day driving from site to site checking out the jobs and looking at new ones. What’s your biggest accomplishment to date? Surviving seven years with the business and still having time to play with my two daughters. What’s the biggest challenge? Dealing with the never-ending issues of tax and handling staff who do not care about how long things take. It does my head in! That’s why I turn up at the start of the job to help set up. If I’m there, we will start the work within an hour, but otherwise it could take three or four to get set up. What do you enjoy doing during your time off? Fishing, keeping fit and playing with my girls. What advice do you have for others wanting to get into your line of work? I took the plunge – not knowing much – but I learnt quickly. I would recommend having an understanding of what is involved with the work first, as it will save time with expensive repairs. Dealing with abrasives and epoxy is very damaging to equipment. I would also recommend having a missus who does not mind you coming home filthy every night! Mine hates it. Even after a shower I still have to use the black towels. T

COMPANY PROFILE www.proimageclothing.com.au, for great deals on workwear, work boots and PPE.

PRO CLOTHING The owner of Pro Image Clothing, Steve Di Sauro, spoke to The Tradie’s editor, Hilary Board, about their wide variety of high-quality, safety-compliant workwear.

H

ow long has Pro Image Clothing been in business? Pro Image Clothing was formed in 2002 by my father. With more than 40 years’ experience and a wealth of knowledge in the textile business, it was a natural progression from manufacturing into printing and branding. Were there any challenges you had to overcome? It was always difficult to get our Australianmade clothing branded to meet our customers’ needs efficiently and cost effectively, so in recent years we decided to do it ourselves. With our current facilities we can manufacture, embroider and deliver with the shortest lead times, which is a real bonus for our clients. Tell us about your products and services. As a small business, we offer a wide range of both locally manufactured and imported products. Having such a long history in textiles, we know quality when we see it, and have sourced the highest quality products as part of a stock service available Australia wide.

20

ISSUE 11 // SEPTEMBER 2014

What has been some of the feedback you have received? Our customers love the fact we are a small business. We are one-on-one with all of our clients. Pro Image offers a tailored uniform or workwear package to suit everyone’s needs. There is no client too big or too small for us, and having the facilities to service all industries makes us stand out from the rest. Sourcing quality garments is our priority. They fit, they wash and they last! What do the next three years hold for Pro Image Clothing? The future looks great for Pro Image. We have taken on a few bigger clients, who have their own online ordering systems in place, as well as lots of individual tradies, who need a few shirts here and there. I can only see this number growing in the coming years, as we cater for every business around Australia. Tell us the top three things you feel need to change within the trade industry. Workplace safety is at the top of our list. It’s an important issue that’s often overlooked. We supply 100 per cent Australian compliant safety gear, but there needs to be stricter governance on the inferior products coming in from overseas that claim to be compliant. A few bucks and the correct personal protective equipment could mean the difference between walking away from an accident or suffering life-threatening injuries. A major sector of our clientele is subject to oil, gas and/or electricity hazards daily, so we only supply the best safety gear. The other concerning issue is the workplace conditions in our own industry. There are plenty of factories that pay less than minimum wage and have unsuitable working environments for their employees. They are skimping on their greatest assets: their people! There also needs to be more government support for local manufacturers – simple.

Which items have been the most popular with your clients? About 65 per cent of our work is wetweather related and this year has been no exception. With the cold mornings and sunny afternoons, the three-in-one jacket and vest combos are always a hit. We have also had a recent expansion into flame-resistant workwear, supplying high-end refinery and mining sites across Australia. As our slogan says, “From high-visibility workwear to personal protective equipment, from aprons to earmuffs – we have you covered!” Our monthly sale items are usually a hit, so keep an eye on our website,

www.thetradie.com.au

Anything else you would like to say to tradies and apprentices? Pro Image Clothing supplies all industries with high-quality workwear, uniforms and safety gear. Whether you’re in construction, electrical, mining, transport office work or hospitality, we have a solution for you. Uniforms and personalised workwear add a professional look to any business. If you are a “one man show” we can help you stand out. If you are a small to medium business, we can implement a uniform and safety-gear program to suit your needs. The best part is you deal directly with the owner. We pride our business on customer service, so feel free to give us a call to discuss your company’s options. BUSINESS TOOLS marketing, using Google Apps, tablets and smartphones. (Cost is $127 per person and includes morning tea and lunch.)

A former plumber, Matt Jones, is equipping tradies with the critical financial know-how for running a successful company.

This educational movement is generating a lot of support from local businesses, along with some big name sponsors, such as PayPal. Nick from Apex Signage in Sydney says, “This is the perfect opportunity for tradies like me to learn about new systems and techniques. When you work in your own business, you get set in your ways and it becomes hard to learn about better methods.”

T

he Australian Bureau of Statistics has stated that 30 per cent of small businesses have failed since 2008 and a major, contributing factor is a lack of knowledge in terms of running a business. In the trade industry, it’s not uncommon to see highly skilled, efficient tradespeople start their own business with the assumption that their expertise in their trade will be enough to ensure their success. Tradies are eager to learn but there is a lack of resources available to them and they don’t know where to go to find relevant help. This is partly a result of the fact TAFE no longer requires that students complete a business module in order to receive their trade certificate. After being surrounded by this issue for many years, former plumber, Matt Jones, decided to take the matter into his own hands and join up

with a group of partners all keen to educate tradespeople. “We just want to give tradies exposure to what’s available to them, so they can make informed decisions when it comes to what will work best for them,” Matt says. This September, Matt and his colleagues (aka: Tradie Web Guys) will kick off The Modern Tradie’s Workshop, which will educate tradies in the lesser-known areas of their businesses. The first workshop, at Bayview Golf Club on Sydney’s northern beaches on September 5 (from 8.30am-4pm), will cover topics such as: business website enhancement, online

“When looking at the big picture, the real winner is the local community,” Matt says. “Everyone needs tradies and everyone wants a professional service. We’re just trying to help tradespeople deliver a more professional and modern service to their community.” See www.tradiewebguys.com.au/ modern-tradie-workshop-sydney-north/ to find out more. BACK TO BACK

SERIOUS STUFF

When you subcontract to another party, you need to ensure that the subcontract you have in place with them is identical to your contract with the home owner, writes Peter Murphy of Peter Murphy & Associates Solicitors.

T

hose of us old enough to remember the Goons may recall the famous words: “Back to back they faced each other”. I had occasion to remember this phrase recently, when a client called me asking about a problem with his subcontractor. My client had tried to defend a claim brought against him by a disgruntled homeowner on his own, rather than spend his hard-earned money on a lawyer. He thought it was a simple matter of telling the court his version of the story, which was that the allegedly defective work had not been done by him. That was all very well but the problem was that he was the main contractor (in charge of the overall job) and although he had subcontracted the flooring and woodwork to others, he was still the responsible contractor so far as the owner of the property was concerned. “Did you ever think to supervise that work?” I asked. “No,” he replied, “I merely checked from time to time that he was on site.”

22

ISSUE 11 // SEPTEMBER 2014

Unfortunately, not only was the subcontractor’s work defective but there was also an overrun on the time taken to reach practical completion, due to the subcontractor’s failure to order the timber in time. This resulted in a claim for liquidated damages (as agreed under the contract) being enforced by the home owner, for a four-month period – a large claim in itself. My client asked me if there was anything he could do to obtain money from the negligent subcontractor. “What about your ‘Back to Back’ contract?” I asked my client. When you subcontract to another party, you need to ensure that the subcontract you have in place with them is identical to your contract with the home owner – so the subcontract is “back to back” with the main contract. This means that if, for example, there is a defects liability period of 13 weeks in the main contract, the subcontract needs to contain that same period. In my client’s case, there should have been an identical liquidated damages clause in the subcontract.

www.thetradie.com.au

My client had not thought of this and regrettably he only had what he referred to as a “mate’s understanding” – no more than a telephone call asking that the work be done and giving the subcontractor a copy of the plans etc. We will try to recoup some of the money from the negligent subcontractor but it will be extremely difficult – especially so far as liquidated damages are concerned. So the motto of this sorry tale is to always ensure that you have a written subcontract in place that reflects the important points of the main contract to which you are bound – especially clauses such as the defects liability period, liquidated damages, variations, extension of time and exclusions. You need to ensure that you are protected in case the work you have subcontracted is either negligently performed or not performed within the agreed time (as called for under the main contract). Remember: “Back to Back they faced each other.” See petermurphyassoc.com.au for more information. T

Safe and Sound Thanks to technological advances with web and mobile applications, banking has never been easier or more convenient. But the fact we tend to use human-friendly passwords and easy methods to remember them, creates a unique vulnerability, writes Edward Stachyra.

I

ndividuals aren’t the only ones susceptible to password leaks. Large corporations and governments are often victims to account hacking too, such as Domino’s Pizza and Adobe software. When large-scale password leaks make headlines, it demonstrates how we are all vulnerable and how vital it is to change our passwords often. It is even better to use additional authentication methods. Credit card information is generally safe while shopping online, due to Payment Card Industry rules, because online merchants are not allowed to store credit card information in clear text on their servers. However, if you were using the same user password credentials across multiple websites and financial institutions, one would never really need access to your card numbers to gain the ability to conduct financial transactions. They could simply hack into one of the other websites you use and steal your password from there.

Here are five simple rules to help protect yourself on the web and your mobile devices. 1. Do not use the same password for more than one website. Always use special care with your passwords that involve financial websites. Do not use the same password you use to login into Facebook, because even those websites are at risk of being compromised. Many studies have confirmed that users of social and online game sites will use the same user credentials as they do for their financial institutions. For example, in 2009 the online gaming site RockYou was compromised with a leak of around 32 million passwords that were being kept in clear text. The leak in itself may not have been the only problem. RockYou account holders should also be concerned about their passwords on other personal accounts.

2. Never trust links in your email. Hyperlinks that arrive in your email can redirect you to where the sender wants you to go. It is the sender’s version of reality for a website, not yours. Make a practice of being distrustful of your email inbox in general. Email phishing attempts can be so well disguised that it can be difficult to tell the difference between phishing and a legitimate email. If you receive an email from your bank to confirm a suspected login activity or unauthorised purchase, give yourself a few seconds to think it over. You never know where that email came from or if the email is redirecting you to a fake site to capture your login credentials. It’s a lot safer to close that email and open up the bank’s website through your own browsing activity to look for an alert or an offer. 3. Use two-step authentication for websites that offer it. Free email sites such as Gmail and Hotmail offer two-step authentication via SMS/Text, so why not take advantage of it? Two-step authentication requires a second authentication system when logging in from new devices or browsers the site does not recognise. It also provides you with peace of mind, as it’s nearly impossible for someone to hack your email account if you use two-step authentication via SMS/Text. 4. Always set a password on your mobile phone or tablet. Use passwords for all work and personal mobile devices and ensure your children are doing the same. Make sure the person who finds your lost or stolen phone or tablet does not get access to your personal information as well. 5. Install a find-my-phone app on your mobile phone or tablet. Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android both offer ways to find lost phones and even erase your data remotely if your phone is lost. Apple offers the “Find iPhone App” in the App Store for free. If you use the same iCloud, you will see all of your devices on a map with a single iCloud login. Google offers the Android Device Manager for any device linked to your Google Account. You can use location services to view your devices on Google Maps. You must perform a few extra steps on the Android phone itself to allow Android Device Manager to remotely lock or erase the device. Edward Stachyra is the software developer for Your Future Strategy Pty Ltd and the director of Starpond Software. He specialises in Salesforce, information assurance, web and mobile apps. QUESTION TIME R U OK? Day takes place on September 11 this year, preceding Mental Health Week from October 5-12. R U OK? is an annual day dedicated to reminding people to ask family, friends and colleagues “R U OK?”, and help those who may be struggling with life.

R

U OK? is an independent, not-forprofit, suicide prevention organisation founded by Australians, Gavin Larkin and Janina Nearn in 2009. Inspired by the suicide death of Larkin’s father, Barry Larkin, it was hoped that by encouraging meaningful conversations, more people would take the time to connect with anyone who may be experiencing a problem. If your gut tells you something is not quite right with someone you know (due to a change in their attitude or behaviour etc), the organisation offers the following tips to help you ask the question: R U OK? Be ready: - Make sure you are in the right headspace yourself. - Be willing to genuinely listen and give as much time as needed. - Be ready to share your own stories of struggle to help them feel OK about saying they are not OK. Be prepared: - Accept that a difficult conversation could follow and that you won’t have all the answers. - Understand that talking about personal struggles can be embarrassing and difficult. They might react angrily or be dismissive because they are worried what others might think. - Think about how you would like to start the conversation and what words you might use. 24

ISSUE 11 // SEPTEMBER 2014

Pick your moment: - Make sure you ask them somewhere relatively private and comfy. - Pick a time that’s good for them. - If something happens and the chat is cut short, make another time to catch up. Dealing with denial: - If they deny the problem, don’t criticise them. Acknowledge they’re not ready to talk. You could say, “It’s OK that you don’t want to talk about it but please call me when you are ready to chat.” - Avoid a confrontation. - Tell them you are concerned about changes in their behaviour and that you care about them. - Ask if you can enquire again next week, if there is no improvement. Expert help: - If someone says they are thinking about suicide, it’s important you take it seriously. - Tell them that you care about them and you want to help. Don’t become agitated, angry or upset. - Explain that thoughts of suicide are common and don’t have to be acted upon. - Ask if they have begun to take steps to end their life. If they have, it’s very important that you don’t leave them alone and do not use guilt or threats. - Even if someone says they haven’t made a plan to take their own life, you still need to take it seriously.

www.thetradie.com.au

- If you think that someone’s life is in immediate danger, call 000 and stay with them until help arrives. If you or someone you know needs crisis counselling, Lifeline’s counsellors are available any day or time on 13 11 14. Lifeline also has an online crisis chat service (available 8pm-4am AEST seven days) at www.lifeline.org.au/Find-Help/OnlineServices/crisis-chat. If you would like to support R U OK?’s important national campaign, you can purchase T-shirts ($13.50), wrist bands ($12), stubby holders ($5.50) and other branded accessories via the R U OK? Day website, ruokday.org.au. The organisation works collaboratively with experts in suicide prevention and mental illness, as well as government departments and community groups.

THE FACTS: • About 45 per cent of Australians will experience mental illness in their lifetime, while 20 per cent are affected every year. • In a 12-month period, it is estimated that 65,000 Australians make a suicide attempt. • An average of 2,300 people suicide every year. • Suicide is the biggest killer of Australians aged 15 to 34 years (ABS 2012). sideline the supplements Australians spend about $500 million every year on vitamin and mineral supplements. For a cheaper, natural alternative, we’ve found the best food sources for the most important vitamins. By: Belinda Crestani VITAMIN D Known as “the sunshine vitamin”, vitamin D’s main purpose is to increase calcium absorption and promote the growth and development of bones and teeth. Vitamin D is typically produced in the body by the action of sunlight on the skin. Top food sources: Egg yolks, fish liver oil and oily fish – such as salmon, trout and sardines.

VITAMIN K Vitamin K is an important fatsoluble vitamin, stored in the bones and the liver. The body needs it to function, stay healthy, and prevent too much bleeding. Top food sources: Parsley, asparagus, chard or silver beet, prunes, and spirulina.

VITAMIN C As an antioxidant, vitamin C protects cells in the body from free radical damage and also has antiviral, antibacterial and anti-allergenic activity. It helps strengthen the immune system to fight colds and flu. Top foods sources: Brussels sprouts, broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, beans, bananas, peas, pineapple, potatoes, oranges, strawberries and lemons.

VITAMIN A Vitamin A promotes good vision, helping you to see and protecting

your eyes from infection. Vitamin A is an antioxidant, which helps to protect and heal your body, as well as form and maintain healthy skin, teeth, skeletal and soft tissue.

VITAMIN B3

Top food sources: Vitamin A comes in two natural forms: retinol, found in animal products such as liver, eggs, butter, and fish liver oils; and beta-carotene, found in plants such as dark orange vegetables, dark green leafy vegetables and fruits.

Top food sources: Meat, yeast products, whole grains, seeds, spirulina, peanuts and legumes.

VITAMIN E Vitamin E is essential for strong immunity and healthy skin and eyes. Eating plenty of raw foods, particularly vegetables, can boost your intake of vitamin E. Top food sources: Almonds, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, avocado, olive oil, coconut and sweet potato.

VITAMIN B2 Our bodies need vitamin B2 to help break down proteins, fats and carbohydrates. It plays a vital role in maintaining the body’s energy supply. Top food sources: Wholegrain cereals, yeast products, quinoa, spirulina, milk, eggs, salmon, broccoli, asparagus, almonds and spinach.

Vitamin B3, also known as Niacin, is essential for energy production within the body, as well as being involved in many other essential chemical reactions.

VITAMIN B6

Vitamin B6 plays a facilitating role in the immune system and the growth of new cells. It is naturally present in many foods. Top food sources: Yeast products, whole grains, bananas, pistachios, beans, chickpeas, brown rice and corn.

VITAMIN B9

FIGHTING FIT

ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES A man’s arms say a lot about how hard he works. Use this countdown method workout and watch the ladies blush as your arm muscles pop. By: Exercise physiologist, certified strength and conditioning specialist and owner of Taurus Trainer, Steve Roberts. COUNTDOWN METHOD Do 15 repetitions of exercise A followed immediately by 15 reps of exercise B. Rest for the same time it took you to complete both sets of exercises. Then do 14 reps of exercise A followed by 14 reps of exercise B and rest for the same time it took to complete both sets of exercises. Continue this pattern until you complete just one rep of each exercise. If you complete the entire routine – from 15 down to one – you will do 120 repetitions of each exercise. That’s 240 repetitions. And these aren't just any exercises: they are movements that also challenge your back and your entire body. Exercise A: Unassisted slow negative pullup (for biceps, lats) 26

ISSUE 11 // SEPTEMBER 2014

If you don’t have a pull-up bar, place a towel across the top ledge of a sturdy door and another one tight against the top hinge. Stand on a solid chair, face the door, place your Pull ups hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart on the cloth over the door and use your knees, letting your body hang along the door.

1. Looking straight ahead, start with the feet wider than the hips and the arms straight. 2. Thrust the hips forward and swing the arms above the body, keeping the weight through the heels with neutral curves in the spine. Caution: Maintain a firm grip on the weight and control both phases of the swing. If the weight cannot be controlled above the head, aim for straight ahead instead. Adjust difficulty: To increase difficulty, pause at the top of the movement and use two objects (e.g. two kettlebells). Kettlebell swings

1. With assistance from your legs pushing against the chair, pull yourself up against the door until your chin is over the top. 2. With your chin over the supporting surface, lift your legs off the chair, and slowly lower yourself, without the help of your legs, over a period of four seconds. Caution: Control both phases of the pull-up and maintain a firm grip on the bar or door throughout the exercise. Adjust difficulty: To increase difficulty, pause at the top of the movement; lift yourself up without assistance and use a bar instead of a door. Exercise B: Swings (for glutes, quads) If you don’t have a kettlebell or dumbbells, use a sandbag, heavy backpack or tool.

sk yourself this question: do you workout for performance or looks? Once you have answered this, you can then determine whether you are actually training or exercising. Understanding the difference between the two is fundamental to achieving the desired objective and benefiting either as an athlete or as an everyday punter wanting to look good naked.

TRAIN OR EXERCISE? This month, fitness contributor, Steve Roberts, sheds some light on American strength-training coach and author Mark Rippetoe’s views of training versus exercising.

Training is organised activity aimed directly at improving performance. Training is the process of direct physical stress, which results in adaptation. Effective training includes repetition to master the movement, which improves anatomical adaptation and muscular endurance. Once the technique has been mastered, focus must be shifted to building strength. This is achieved not by doing more (improves muscular endurance) but by increasing the load (stimulus), which causes stress that leads to an adaptation (if you can recover from it), which builds strength. Exercising ignores this by doing exactly what you did last time (without changing repetitions) or by doing any other randomised program dictated by either you, the group fitness program you chose,

or your trainer. I’m not bagging these programs or your trainer, but rather asking how you track your progress? How can you know if you are benefiting from your workouts if you are not tracking your numbers? If you’re not training, you are almost entirely just exercising. If you are feeling punished every day it’s not because you are getting stronger, it’s because you aren’t adapting to the work. So your body will obviously sweat but does it grow? Exercising can leave the individual lost as to where to head next, or see them falling off the fitness wheel they worked so hard to get onto in the first place. Athletes who need to increase strength are wasting their potential for improvement by doing anything but training. Novice weekend warriors and those in the looks department who vary exercises constantly to keep their bodies guessing will receive benefits from the exercises done and get some conditioning effects but they won’t get much stronger. If you want to perform, take the training route. If you just want to look good, take the exercise route. See taurustraining.com.au for more from Steve Roberts. T

2. South Coast, NSW The most sought-after shark by sports fisherman is probably the mako shark. They can be found right around the country in the cooler waters, with the South Coast of NSW probably the most reliable (although Bass Strait and Tassie are good too). To catch one, drive your boat to the edge of the shelf and set a burley trail. Wait for a few hours and a 28

To catch one, anchor up your boat, toss out a juicy, fresh bit of bait – such as a squid head – and fish it on the bottom. You might catch a snapper as well! 4. What a

JOKE!

WIN!

TELL US YOUR FAVOURITE JOKE TO WIN A HOT DEVIL SUPER WEED KILLER, WORTH $69!

This month we’ve brought you some cracking oneliners from English funny man and actor, Ricky Gervais. Enjoy!

It’s going to be a night of partying and heavy drinking. Or as Charlie Sheen calls it: breakfast.

People see me in the suit and they know I’m not fooling anyone... they know I’m rock’n’roll through and through.

I’ve never worked out what the moral of Humpty Dumpty is. I can only think of: don’t sit on a wall, if you’re an egg.

Where there’s a will there’s a relative!

The 1st of December, World Aids Day… I don’t think it’ll ever take off like Christmas.

I like a drink as much as the next man... unless the next man is Mel Gibson. Say what you want about the Amish... because they’re not on Twitter

Your god is the best god. In fact, he’s the only god. All other gods are ridiculous, made-up rubbish. Not yours though. Yours is real.

A Christian telling an atheist they’re going to hell is as scary as a child telling an adult they’re not getting any presents from Santa.

Ignorance might be bliss for the ignorant, but for the rest of us it’s a right f---ing pain in the arse!

The best advice I’ve ever received is, “No one else knows what they’re doing either!”

They actually gave me a list of rules. I thought it would be good to read them out. No profanity. That’s fine. I’ve got a huge vocabulary. No nudity. See, that’s a shame. I’ve got a huge... vocabulary. But a tiny penis. No, no. Doesn’t matter. It works. Don’t worry about it. It’s fine.

You should make something. You should bring something into the world that wasn’t in the world before. It doesn’t matter what it is. It doesn’t matter if it’s a table or a film or gardening – everyone should create. You should do something, then sit back and say, “I did that.” www.thetradie.com.au

Never pick a fight with an ugly person, they’ve got nothing to lose. Beer commercials usually show big men, manly men, doing manly things: “You’ve just killed a small animal. It’s time for a light beer.” Why not have a realistic beer commercial, with a realistic thing about beer, where someone goes, “It's five o'clock in the morning. You've just pissed on a dumpster. It's Miller time.”

REMEMBERING

ROBIN After the tragic news of his passing last month, we re-live some golden one-liners from comic genius Robin Williams.

I was once on a German talk show, and this woman said to me, “Mr Williams, why do you think there isn’t much comedy in Germany?” And I said, “Did you ever think you killed all the funny people?” If I could light my own farts I could fly to the moon, or at least Uranus. My God. We’ve had cloning in the South for years. It’s called cousins.
