Welcome Aboard W

elcome aboard your flight today with Skippers. At long last the winter weather has arrived – together with the soaking rain – which was desperately needed in some areas. Regardless of the weather, our dedicated crews will make your journey as comfortable as possible. Regis Resources is getting on top of their recent setback with the flooding of some of their mines and are fast-tracking remedial work to enable them to get back to full production. The Shire of Wiluna has decided to downgrade their airstrip from certified to registered from July 1, 2014. This should not affect services to the destination, as they are currently being carried out on a 30-seat Brasilia aircraft (this is the largest aircraft able to land on a registered airstrip). Skippers Kimberley Air Service routes servicing Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek are being well patronised by the local community and provide a fast and comfortable journey to those remote locations.

Skippers RPT services to Geraldton, Monkey Mia and Carnarvon have now changed, giving more direct services to Carnarvon, as well as afternoon services on Wednesdays and Fridays via Monkey Mia, allowing you more time at this fabulous resort. This is in addition to the Discover West Holidays promotion, which is predominately focused on Monkey Mia and Shark Bay, as well as a holiday promotion in conjunction with the Carnarvon Travel Centre focusing on Carnarvon and Perth. Both are receiving positive results. The Carnarvon racing season has now commenced. Skippers will continue to provide charter flights for jockeys and race personnel for this popular destination, as we have done for a number of seasons. After more than 20 years of servicing the Lawlers Gold Mine, Skippers will now cease to run their service to the mine site strip. This is due to the change of ownership to Goldfields, which has meant they have amalgamated the Lawlers mine with their Agnew operations. Unfortunately the closure of the Lawlers mill has resulted in redundancies for some Lawlers staff. Motive Travel is also promoting a number of tours involving sporting events. Skippers’ Road Transport arm continues to be very active in the resource industry. See www.skippers.net.au. Ocean Beach Hotel is offering great deals on accommodation right on North Cottesloe Beach. See www.obh.com.au. The Ocean Beach Backpackers also has great facilities right on the beach. www.oceanbeachbackpackers.com.au Burswood Car Rentals has a guaranteed pick-up and delivery service that can be ordered online or directly with them, and they are often cheaper than the betterknown brands. We would like to remind you that we have wireless internet available free of charge for our passengers in the Perth terminal. Please enquire upon checking in. Once again, enjoy your journey with us today. We feel privileged to provide this service and look forward to you flying with us again soon.

THEY WILL L

ROCK

YOU

egendary British rock band Queen has announced they will visit Australia in August this year, with Adam Lambert on vocals. This will be the first time Queen has been to Australia since 1985, and they land in Perth on August 22, before heading to Sydney, Melbourne and then finishing up in Brisbane. Following a stellar performance together in Las Vegas last year, Adam Lambert, Roger Taylor and Brian May decided to take the show global and rock arenas around the world. Promoter Paul Dainty says bringing Queen back to Australia will be a dream come true for many. “This may be the last chance Australian fans have to see one of the greatest rock bands in history,” he says. During their 40 years of performing, Queen has received countless awards, hall of fame inductions and record sales. In fact, their unprecedented string of number one albums and charttopping singles represents the highest selling back catalogue in Australia, even surpassing bands such as The Beatles, despite the death of Freddie Mercury in 1991. Renowned for his spectacular performances on American Idol, Adam Lambert is set to add plenty of excitement to the show. Lambert’s debut album earned him a Grammy Award nomination in 2011 and his second album debuted at number one on the Billboard charts in 2012. Lambert says he is in complete awe of the Queen phenomenon. “The thought of sharing the stage for a full set in Australia is so surreal to me,” he says. “I’m honoured to be able to pay my respects to Freddie's memory. He's a personal hero of mine and I’m deeply grateful for the chance to sing such powerful music for fans of this legendary band ... With the support of Brian, Roger and the rest of the band, I feel like magic will be on display.” Tickets for the Perth show start at $102. Urban Aussie hip-hop artist, Illy, sat down with Skippers Inflight’s Aly Eveille for a chat about his music, performing live and his upcoming gig at the North West Festival.

Y

ou recently wrapped up the Cinematic Tour and have been smashing it at a load of Australian festivals; what’s it like

getting up in front of tens of thousands of your own kind? Illy: I finished up the Cinematic Tour a month ago and that was good, and performing in front of Aussies is a lot of fun! It’s cool to see people enjoy what you do. They’re always so energetic, jumping around to the tracks and singing the songs, which is really crazy to see. Can you go back 15 years or so and tell me how your music has evolved since then? Illy: It started badly [laughs]! I was making bad music back then but it gradually got better. I started getting into it at about 13 years old, when no one listened to Aussie hip-hop. Back then my influencers were artists on the American rap scene and I didn’t know any better. Artists like Biggie Smalls, Tupac and Jay-Z. As I got older I got onto the scene and got to know it all a lot better. I was able to get my music to a point where I was happy with it and a lot of people got really into it. I think people like it because they’re local people and I’m talking about local stuff. You won an ARIA Award for the 2013 Best Urban Album, how does the whole creative process go for you? Illy: This really depends track to track. Sometimes I find a beat and write around that and then let it flow. I find inspiration from wherever I can and my experiences contribute to the creativity of each track. I might even just think of a lyric, or have something written down, you know?

12

North West Festival: Which is your favourite track to date and why? Illy: Oh man, that’s a really hard one! Without sounding up myself, a lot of my tracks mean a lot to me so it’s really hard for me to choose just one. If I had to choose though, I’d have to say Am Yours because it’s about my Mum and how she overcame cancer. That’s the easy answer to that question. What can fans expect from your set at the North West Festival in the Pilbara in late August? Illy: We’re really excited to be going over there! It’s one of the only places in Australia that we haven’t played at before and we’re amped for it! One of the best things about doing what I do is seeing the country and it takes a lot of time and travel to get to the Pilbara, so we’re excited to go over and experience it. It’s going to be an energetic show. You’ve well and truly conquered Australia... where to from here? Illy: I’m heading over to North America soon to start on the next album and to film the video for the next single, so that’ll be good. I’m also heading over to Europe to support the Hilltop Hoods in a few months. To keep up-to-date with Illy, follow illyal on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. For more information on the North West Festival, see northwestfestival.com.au.

The North West Festival is fast approaching, with the Pilbara set to experience yet another premier musical event. The stellar line-up was announced in April and includes The Dandy Warhols, Wolfmother, Art v Science, Violent Soho, Missy Higgins, Illy, Hermitude, and many more. Now in its third year, there are some exciting changes being planned by Sunset Events and The Town of Port Hedland, including the festival’s expansion into a weekend-long event, which includes two nights of entertainment and free camping, as well as an acoustic-style “sundowner” on the Sunday night. There will also be a range of activities taking place in the Port Hedland area, with shuttle buses available as a complimentary service for attendees. If you want to continue the party, you can enjoy an evening of acoustic-style acts at the Port Hedland Civic Centre on Sunday, August 24, featuring Thelma Plum, Dustin Tebbutt and local acts yet to be announced. See northwestfestival.com.au for tickets or more information. n

L

ast May, Brisbane hosted the INBA, where bodybuilders and figure, fitness and bikini competitors broke the record with more than 430 athletes taking to the stage. This is a huge increase since 2007, when there were only 52 competitors for one show. If this INBA event is anything to go by, it’s obvious that more and more people want to take control of their health and fitness and then jump on stage to show off their impressive achievements. Aly Eveille caught up with 29-year-old personal trainer Matt Elley, who placed first in the Men’s Intermediate and Men’s Open divisions at the INBA Brisbane Classic in 2014; and also chatted to personal trainer and group fitness instructor Niki Dennien, who took out first place in the Bikini Diva Over 30s division at the same event. Matt, how did your bodybuilding journey begin? Matt: Some friends were doing shows but with my commitments to football it was hard

for me to do both. I went to some events and was blown away. I set myself a goal to do it and a few years later, I competed. Along the way I also did triathlons, the Kokoda track and the Oxfam Trailwalker, set myself cardio goals and always trained weights. How did you prepare for the INBA? Matt: It’s usually about a 20-week cut for me, but even in the 12 to 16 weeks before that

The International Natural Bodybuilding Association (INBA) is fast becoming Australia’s most renowned natural bodybuilding competition, with events spanning the country. By: Aly Eveille. I’m eating and thinking for my competition. I’ll eat as much food as I can, trying to get my metabolism going and my body used to consuming a lot of calories. The goal is to eat as much as you can without putting on body fat. I was eating 5000-6000 calories a day, so because of that my metabolism was fast and I was burning high levels of calories just by functioning. For the first four to six weeks I did no cardio and weight training was a mixture of very heavy weights. I gradually started to reduce small portions of calories and certain types of food. Cardio started at about 16 weeks and only involved two high-intensity sprints of 20 minutes. Closer to the event I did as little cardio as possible and I started to focus on smaller muscle groups. In the last four weeks I dropped the high intensity cardio and only did a few long walks on the treadmill each week. In the last two weeks I had to focus on carbohydrate, sodium and water loading and depletion. I also did half an hour of posing on most days.

How did competition day play out for you? Niki: This was my first competition, so it was all very new to me. I had my stage tan booked for 8.30am, hair and make-up two hours after that, then the show started at 5pm and went through until about 11pm. I was on stage five times during that time so it was exhausting, but exciting! What do you plan to do now that you’ve competed? Niki: Fitness has been my life since I was young, playing netball, basketball, touch football and athletics. After moving into weights and functional training I’ve never looked back, which is why I made the career change from working in mining to personal training. Nothing is going to change for me after this. My training will stay the same with a few weights sessions, some HIIT circuits and eating six to seven healthy meals a day. But I Matt Elley, photo courtesy of Cameron McPhee

Ice hockey is famous for being one of the most violent sports in the world, with fisticuffs, deliberate fighting and fan involvement seen as acceptable and important parts of the game. There’s nothing like it in Australia, so when the US and Canadian teams arrive on our shores in July to battle it out for the Douglas Webber Cup and International Ice Hockey title, there will be a wave of excitement from fans of the sport. By: Aly Eveille

T

he Australian series will kick-off off on July 11 at Perth Arena and is set to be packed with entertainment, pyrotechnics, and mammoth sound and lighting effects. The showcase aims to give fans a true North American ice-hockey experience with jumbo screens and a spectacular line-up of athletes that will have spectators on the edge of their seats. With players from previous years coming from the American Hockey League, The National Hockey League, and even Stanley Cup winners, the bill is expected to rock the games. The most impressive though is Australian ice-hockey player, Nathan Walker, the first Australian to ever make the American Hockey League. At the age of 20, it’s hard to believe Walker has spent the past seven years in North America and Europe in the name of his sporting career. But it’s this dedication that has led to his admirable placing within the sport as an official player for America. “I’ve been playing since I was about four years old,” Walker says. “My older brother was involved in it so I naturally wanted to copy him and everything just went from there.” While ice hockey is renowned for its violence and crowd involvement, Walker says

Nathan Walker

it’s a fun game to be a part of, especially when the momentum changes so quickly. “It starts to get rough when other players take cheapshots, and it’s our job to get them back for it,” he says. “In saying that, it can be dangerous and I fully support the Stopconcussions organisation and the work they do.” The International Ice Hockey Australian series sold out in Melbourne and Sydney last year, so organisers have added an extra game in Perth on July 12, as well as a game in Brisbane on July 19. The series will hit

Melbourne on July 25 and then Sydney on July 26 this year. (Tickets for the first game on July 11 in Perth range from $81-$252.) “It’s really great to be playing in front of a crowd of Aussies,” Walker says. “It gets so loud and the fans really get into it. There’s nothing like playing in front of 20,000 or so Australians.” Other players confirmed so far include America’s Ryan Ginand, Louis Liotti, and Michael Forney, and Canada’s Kevin Harvey, Josh Brittain and Jordon Southorn. See internationalicehockey.com.au for more information on the US versus Canada series in Australia in July, or head to Ticketek for tickets. n

As an added bonus, there’s also an after-burn effect known as EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption). This means HIIT will increase your metabolism and burn more energy (calories) for up to 24 hours after the training, whereas going for a long, slow jog burns almost no calories afterwards.

THE BULGE

By: Mareike Bout, health & living coach for Mining Family Matters. See miningfm.com.au

K

eeping the kilos at bay while you are working can be challenging if you don’t consider the calorie content of what you are tucking into. But the “bainmarie life” needn't keep you looking and feeling stodgy and overweight. Next time you chow down, use these practical tips. Breakfast Try: cereals such as museli, oats (porridge) and Weet-Bix, fresh fruit, grainy wholemeal toast with poached or boiled eggs and grilled tomato, low-fat natural yoghurt, nuts, seeds, and baked beans. Avoid: bacon, sausages, scrambled eggs, fried eggs, poached fruit, croissants, butter and fruit juice. Lunch Try: wraps or grainy bread (such as multigrain or wholemeal) filled with chicken breast and as much fresh salad as possible. Finish off with some fruit and a few nuts and you will have plenty of energy to get you through the afternoon. Dinner This is where it can get tough because you have worked hard all day, you are hungry and

tired and all you want to do is relax and eat a tasty, satisfying meal. The bottom line with weight loss or weight maintenance is that you must keep your portions to a reasonable size. Your body can only process and use so much food at a time, so any excess is quickly stored as body fat. I tell all my clients that the one thing they can do right now to start losing weight is to eat what they normally would, just one-third less of it. You still get to eat the food you like so you don’t feel deprived and you don’t have to worry about counting calories or sourcing special foods. Top tips for preventing weight gain: • Banish the bread. • Slow down and savour. Eat slowly to allow your brain the time it needs to register that you are full. Put you fork down between mouthfuls and savour your meal.

• • • • •

Start with soup or salad. The more you eat of the healthy stuff, the less you will eat of the high-calorie, fat-laden choices. For soups, go for vegetable or bean-based versions, the chunkier the better. Avoid any that are cream-based. For salads, the golden rule is to use minimal dressing. Fill up on extra veggies – a lowcalorie choice. Choose lean protein. Stick with low-fat cuts of meat, such as chicken and turkey. If necessary, remove the skin. Fish and shellfish are excellent choices but shouldn’t be crumbed or battered. Keep your sauce on the side. Gravies, sauces and dressings are big traps when you are watching your weight. Go easy on them or avoid altogether. Finish with fruit. For dessert, fresh fruit (without the ice-cream) is your best choice. Most other desserts are a dietary disaster. My advice is to avoid dessert or, if you must indulge, a couple of spoonfuls with your coffee should get you off the hook with minimal dietary damage! n

BUTT

OUT

Tobacco kills nearly 6 million people each year, and more than 600,000 of these are non-smokers dying from breathing second-hand smoke. This year, May 31 was World No Tobacco Day. To mark the occasion, Skippers Inflight Magazine took a look at five different quitting methods available and their success rates. Nicotine patch Research shows if you're addicted to smoking and use patches, you can double your chances of quitting successfully. They work by reducing withdrawal symptoms such as mood swings. The patch provides a steady dose of nicotine while you wear it, but it can take a few hours for levels to rise after you first apply it. You may need to experiment to find the right dose. A 21mg-24-hour patch may help more than a 15mg/16-hour patch if you have bad morning cravings. But you can use a patch and gum/lozenge at the same time, if you need to. The patch suits most people, particularly if you need to smoke constantly throughout the day and want to use it privately.

Nicotine chewing gum, lozenges or tablets Research shows that using gum/lozenges etc properly can double your chances of quitting successfully. Nicotine gum etc gives you nicotine when you crave it, without maintaining the dose. It can be used while cutting down the number of cigarettes you smoke before you stop completely. It suits people whose need to smoke varies throughout the day. It

28

Issue 34

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

particularly helps if you want to control how much nicotine you take, have bad morning cravings or get most cravings in particular situations.

Electronic cigarettes Electronic cigarettes deliver the experience of smoking (with a vapour) while eliminating the smell and health risks associated with tobacco smoke. According to a study late last year, smokers keen to quit are just as likely to be successful if they use electronic cigarettes as they are with nicotine patches, but e-cigarettes outperformed patches when it came to helping people cut down on the number of real cigarettes they smoked and helping them avoid a relapse. In CIG’s electronic cigarettes, each one is powered by a small lithium battery that atomises a liquid propylene glycolnicotine solution. The solution contains a dosage of nicotine that can be controlled, and over time the user might use no nicotine at all.

Prescription medication Both bupropion (Zyban, Clorpax) and varenicline (Champix) reduce withdrawal symptoms when you quit. Varenicline also

works by blocking the nicotine receptors in your brain and making smoking less satisfying. They're not suitable for everyone and can trigger strong side effects in a small number of people. Talk to your doctor to find out if they're right for you. You are allowed one course each of bupropion and varencline on the Pharmeceutical Benefits Scheme every year. Your doctor will make it a condition of you taking these medications to have some coaching support while you're quitting as well, from a health professional or the Quitline.

Cold turkey Cold turkey is giving up smoking suddenly, without medications. There is no harm trying to quit this way. If you are a light smoker (less than 10 to 15 cigarettes a day) and have only mild withdrawal symptoms when you quit, it's likely that you do not need medication. However, dealing with ingrained smoking habits, smoking friends, times when you miss cigarettes etc can still be a challenge for many smokers after they quit. You can obtain a free Quit Pack by calling the Quitline on 13 78 48. See quitnow.gov.au for more information. n

SHOCK

AND AWE A severe workplace injury saw Anton Guinea badly burnt and rushed to intensive care. He shares his moving story with Inflight Publishing.

The Accident At 21 years of age I was working as an electrician’s assistant and was tasked with mounting an overload in a switchboard with another electrician. After isolating the board and completing the permit to work, I measured where the overload would be mounted with a steel ruler. As I measured, the ruler manoeuvred into a small gap between the housing of the main switch and the back plate of the switchboard. The ruler then made contact with the board, causing a massive electric flash with the switchboard blowing up in my face. The flash from the switchboard and the electric current that passed through my body propelled me across the room. I received electric shock and about 12 per cent of my body was badly burnt on my hands, neck, face and arms. As I tried to lift myself off the floor, the skin on my palms peeled off.

30

Issue 34

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

the safety systems I used weren’t enough to keep me from being injured. This is because I wasn’t motivated by safety and I didn’t equip myself with a mindset that allowed me to notice all of the hazards and remove them. Because I believed an accident like this couldn’t happen to me, I failed to notice that using a steel ruler in a switchboard could be so hazardous and I didn’t engage in making sure my work area and practices were safe. Although I completed all of the workshop work I was required to, I took more of a cursory glance than an active interest in the safety systems being used.

The investigation found that I had followed all of the required safety systems. The switchboard had been isolated, a site induction was completed, and I had completed the permit to work system. But

The Impact The impact of an accident like this is far reaching. As well as being burnt badly, receiving electric shock, and being nursed in intensive care before being taken to the burns unit for three weeks, my family and friends suffered immensely. My parents

1300 SWLABS

were shocked by the accident and one of my brothers broke down when he saw me in hospital. My two younger brothers weren’t allowed to see me due to my disfiguration. As I look back on the accident, I break the impact into three parts: physical, potential and mental. The physical impact was the conspicuous burns. Significant burns are one of the most painful injuries that can be suffered, and there’s not much that can relieve the pain. It took a month for them to heal and for me to be released from the burns unit. The potential impact was that my life could have ended or I could have lost my sight. The mental impact was the most devastating and hard to recover from. Having completed an apprenticeship and not having yet worked as a tradesperson meant I had significant difficulty going back to work. I became frightened of switchboards and wanted to change careers before I even began working as a tradesperson. Lessons Learnt The main lessons I took from the accident can be grouped into three areas: how quickly I finished the job was irrelevant, personal protective equipment works, and safety systems save lives. The time it took me to finish the job, including reducing production costs for the organisation were more important to me than my safety. In hindsight, I should have finished slowly rather than finishing in hospital. Personal protective equipment is essential to keep workers from harm. In the case of my accident, if I had removed my glasses that day I would have been blinded by the flash. Also, because I was wearing long sleeves that were rolled down and buttoned, my arms were saved from further burns. Had I used the safety systems that were available to me with a motivated safety mindset, I would not have had this accident. I would have recognised the hazards, removed them and done the job more safely than I did. If I was motivated by

32

Issue 34

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

safety, had done a JSA or any sort of personal hazard identification, I wouldn’t have used a steel ruler. Recovery The early stages of my recovery were extremely painful. Because I had hurt both of my hands, there was very little I could do for myself. During my time in the burns unit, some of the strangest and most painful parts of my recovery occurred every morning after my bath. The nurses would use tweezers to pull dead skin off my hands and face and then use scissors to cut the skin off. This was painful because the skin could be pulled back too far and the new skin was very tender. The sights, sounds and smells in the burns unit are enough to make even the strongest person ill. My heart goes out to everyone who ever has – or will be – a patient at the burns unit. Following the initial healing phase after the accident, I experienced four distinct stages of recovery. The self pity and guilt stage involved feelings of how bad life was and being down on myself. It also involved feelings of guilt over the physical damage that was done to the equipment, lost production costs, and worrying about what the organisation thought of me and whether or not I would get a job again. Would anyone want to employ an electrician who has just been blown up by a switchboard? In retrospect, this stage was the easiest to get through. A positive attitude and the experience of recovering in a burns unit was enough to get me through. I quickly realised things weren’t as bad as I wanted to believe. For accident victims, being positive is crucial to recovery. There is no substitute for an attitude of gratitude and being thankful for what you have, not what you may have lost. The learning and acknowledgement stage involved understanding what happened during the accident. When I was able to understand that, I could acknowledge my actions that contributed to the accident. While

it would have been easier to allocate the blame elsewhere, some portion of it had to sit with me. Understanding and acknowledging this was difficult and it took years to come to terms with the fact that I was responsible for the accident and to know what I could do to prevent it from re-occurring. As an accident victim, search for the answers. Find out exactly what happened and how it could have been prevented. The change and reform stage involved taking the lessons and acknowledgements from the previous stage and applying them to ensure that I was not injured again. The growth and development stage involved changing my behaviours, reforming my life, growing personally and professionally. Returning to Work I returned to work as an electrician on a remote mine site in Western Australia’s Pilbara region for three years. I was then promoted to a supervisory position. Since the accident, my attitude towards safety is significantly more focused than most of the people I have had the pleasure of working with. I am now an ambassador for safety at work and at home and my ability to identify and mitigate hazardous situations has improved significantly. I also learnt that Personal Protective Equipment works and that the company would have preferred that I finished the job slowly, rather than finishing up in hospital. In relation to the reform stage of recovery, I now realise that I will never be comfortable around electricity. Not long after the accident, I commenced changing careers. I now do motivational speaking, consulting and workshop facilitation, among other things. I have decided that I survived for a reason and I have a significant amount of value to add in my remaining years. For further information, please contact Anton Guinea on 0418 686 522 or anton@gamotivation.com

ANTON’S ADVICE FOR ACCIDENT VICTIMS: As a victim, the first thing to do is to make a conscious decision to return to work. By making this decision, you will have this goal in mind and you can then work towards achieving it in the shortest possible time. Of course returning to work following a workplace accident is a difficult process, but by understanding some of the stages of the mental recovery process, the victim is able to better understand how to fully recover. The next thing you must do is form a support team. Let people know that you’ll be relying on them for support when you need it. You must then get past the self pity and guilt and be positive at all times. You must learn to value yourself and cast aside doubts about your ability. You also need to learn everything you can about the accident. If you did make mistakes, you will now know what they were and you must make changes to prevent the accident from re-occurring. Change your behaviour, change your attitude and change your work patterns. Whatever the required change is, make it and move forward. n

Hazard a Guess… By: Peta Libby

W

hat are the hazards or risks in your workplace keeping you awake at night? These are likely risks that are completely out of your control, or hazards you delegate to others to control on your behalf. Hazards exist in every workplace. Even if you drive to an office every morning, it may be the idiots you have to negotiate on the road to arrive safely. I will let you in on a secret, as the owner of a business that undertakes work in remote areas, I have five main hazards and risks that keep me awake at night; driving, heat, lifting/ manual handling, lightening and fauna. From 1,000 kilometres away in my office I cannot influence whether these hazards or risks will appear on any given day, at any given location for any one of our crew. So how do I manage to sleep? I cannot influence if cattle appear on the road around a blind corner. But I can ensure we prohibit driving at night to reduce this risk and educate our staff about it. I cannot influence the temperature on any given day but we can train our staff to be aware of the signs of heat stress. I use a risk register to know these hazards and how we can and do control them. Peace of mind comes from knowing your team has the tools and knowledge to cope with the workplace risks you have identified. If you don’t know the risk in your workplace, then you owe it to your staff and family to understand them. Have you completed a workplace risk register yet? Peta Libby is a geologist and the managing director of Digirock. INDUSTRY VERSUS RETAIL SUPER FUNDS R

etail and industry funds both provide members with a tax-friendly environment to grow their retirement

savings. Similarly, all industry and retail funds have a trustee that makes decisions about the insurance and investment services of the fund. This frees members from worrying about the day-to-day management of their super savings. From here there can be key differences. Industry funds operate on a “mutual” basis, where any profits are put back into the fund for the benefit of members. This typically means these funds charge low fees. The original investment offerings of industry funds were simple and targeted at the average member, providing relatively few choices. Over time, there has been a gradual addition of further investment options, to ensure members have a broader choice. Most industry funds provide members with a simple scale of death and “total and permanent disablement” (TPD) insurance cover, which can be purchased for premiums usually around $1 or $1.50 per week for each unit of cover. Industry funds often have their own in-

available to provide general advice (at no cost) or personal advice (at cost to the member). By contrast, retail super funds are run by large organisations, such as banks or insurance companies. Their shareholders expect to receive a return on their investment, and a portion of the profits derived from the activities of retail super funds goes to these

The range of investment options offered by retail super funds is usually extensive, and there is often a much stronger focus on promoting advice services than with industry funds. Anecdotally, retail fund members are far more likely to receive professional financial advice than industry fund members. Members of retail super funds can select their required insurance cover for death, TPD or income protection. Insurance cover is normally subject to some form of medical assessment, and this can mean a more appropriate level of cover beyond the basics. There is consistent rivalry between retail and industry funds, especially when it comes to investment returns. Interestingly, a report on super fund returns issued by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority earlier this year showed that no single super fund stayed on top of the league table across one, five and 10-year periods. Equally, the biggest funds – industry or retail – didn’t always score the top returns. By their nature, investment earnings are not set in cement and they will always vary from year to year, even within the same fund. That’s why, when it comes to choosing a super fund, it makes sense to look at the factors that are certain – like the fees you’ll pay, the services offered by the fund that are genuinely useful to you, and how much you’ll pay for the level of insurance that’s appropriate for your needs. Often contact with their child has been denied and they feel robbed of the opportunity to play a role in their child’s life. This can be devastating, especially for a FIFO father, where time is already limited. Many people assume that fatherhood means that a father’s rights automatically apply. However, the Family Court's approach – as set out in the Family Law Act – is subtly different. While the Act focuses on what is in the child's best interests, it also recognises the important role a father plays in his child’s life. This is reflected in the Act as parental responsibility, and contact. Disagreements often arise about decisions for children on topics such as health, education, religion and living arrangements. Who makes these decisions can be unclear and you may feel that your voice isn’t being heard. Every father should know his rights so they can continue to play a vital role in their child’s life. It can be difficult for FIFO workers to attend appointments, so Butlers Barristers & Solicitors offer confidential telephone appointments with experienced lawyers. INDUSTRY UPDATE

THE TRILLION-DOLLAR

INDUSTRY

By: The Department of Mines and Petroleum’s director general, Richard Sellers

T

he Western Australian resources sector has grown significantly over the past two decades and is fundamentally linked to the State’s prosperity. It is now the backbone of WA’s economy and responsible for bringing large amounts of wealth and investment to the State. In 1993, the value of Western Australia’s minerals and energy was $12.4 billion. In 2013, it was worth $113.8 billion. In other words, the value of our industry is now worth nine times more than it was just 20 years ago. That is an incredible amount of growth in a relatively short time. By 2016, the sales value of WA’s minerals and energy since the start of the 21st century will surpass $1 trillion. An indication of the sector’s importance to the Western Australian economy can be seen in the role it

plays as our number one export earner. Last year it accounted for 91 per cent of the State’s total merchandise exports. It also contributed $5.9 billion in royalties – approximately 20 per cent of total State revenue. This is money that goes towards vital services and infrastructure across WA. It is money that helps build the communities in which we live. But the positive impact of our resources industry does not end in WA, benefits flow across Australia and across the globe. WA produces many of the raw materials that help build our world – from iron ore, which is helping shape the mega-cities of China, to Liquefied Natural Gas, which is helping meet the energy demands of Japan. With $149 billion worth of resource projects under construction or in the committed stage of development, and a further $112 billion identified as planned or possible projects, the strength of the industry in WA looks assured. However, it is important to recognise that past and present success does not guarantee future success. Future success relies on a number of factors, but one of the most important is innovation. Innovation has had long links with WA’s resources industry. In fact, the Western Australian School of Mines was

“The value of our industry is now worth nine times more than it was just 20 years ago.” established in 1902, less than 10 years after gold was first discovered in Kalgoorlie. In more recent times the Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia, which has been around in one form or another since 1981, has published more than 300 research reports that are helping to unlock mineral wealth across WA. Resource companies operating in Western Australia are also using the State as a base for innovation. From Rio Tinto’s Mine of the

Future program and BHP Billiton’s Integrated Remote Operations Centre, to Chevron’s Global Technology Centre and the worldclass Australian Marine Complex – a manufacturing hub 23 kilometres south of Perth. There is no doubt that industry-led innovation is vital, but so too is innovation from the Department of Mines and Petroleum, the regulator of WA’s resources industry. Since 2008 the department has been involved in reforms to mineral and petroleum approvals, as well as safety and environmental regulation. The goal is to create a regulatory environment that makes WA an attractive place to invest, while meeting the community’s expectations for a responsibly developed industry. Public interest in resource projects has seen growing expectations for regulatory and approvals transparency and accountability. This is why the department is striving to ensure community confidence in its regulation of the sector and is increasing transparency of its approval processes and strengthening its regulatory systems. As a part of these reforms, the department has engaged with industry, other agencies and the community throughout the process. This recognises that consultation requires input from a variety of perspectives, it needs to be meaningful and it needs to be ongoing. Not only does this ensure the community is informed, but it also provides resource companies with a clear understanding of what is required to undertake operations in WA. In order to ensure the future success of the resources industry in WA, it is vital that we continue to build on our success. Innovation will be one of the keys to ensuring the State, the nation and the world can continue to benefit from a strong Western Australian resources industry. n

MAKE IT A MICRO

Stone & Wood comes of age in June, with the launch of their second brewery in a much larger new location at Tweed Heads. Stone & Wood’s unstoppable success since launching in 2008 has no doubt motivated other aspiring brewers, with several opening their doors in recent years. Editor and ale fan Hilary Board takes a look at some of the best microbreweries around Australia.

N

ew South Wales’ 4 Pines Brewing Company: Located in Manly and established in 2008, 4 Pines produces six handcrafted beers and some interesting seasonal varieties. They are all brewed naturally according to the German purity law from the 16th century, which allowed only four ingredients: hops, water, yeast and malt. They do incorporate the odd bit of mandarin, ginger and other natural ingredients from time to time, but definitely no nasties, such as artificial ingredients, flavours, additives, preservatives or fruit juice. And they don’t substitute their quality barley with Victoria’s Prickly Moses brewery

rice, maize, sorghum or other cheap alternatives. Tours of the Manly brewery are available from 12.30pm Monday to Friday for $25 and bookings are not essential. Hosted by a “qualified beer nut”, they include a tasting rack of five international award-winning beers. See 4pinesbeer.com.au. NSW’s Young Henry’s Brewing: Situated in Newtown and established in March 2012, Young Henry’s state-of-the-art, natural gas driven dried malt extract (DME) brewery produces a range of four high-quality ales, lagers and ciders, as well as seasonal versions. Along with

the best quality ingredients sourced from Australia and around the world, the flavour is a result of experience and passion. Head brewer, Richard Adamson, has been awarded more than 40 medals for his beers in international competitions. Young Henry’s hours are Monday to Saturday, 10am to 7pm. At the cellar door’s tasting room you can sample and hear about the beers and pick up a returnable two-litre “growler” bottle to take away. Brewery tours are available by appointment. See younghenrys.com. Queensland’s Burleigh Brewing Company: Located on the Gold Coast, Burleigh has been up and running since 2007. They pump out some fantastic beers, including the American-style 78 Pale Ale, German-style HEF wheat beer, classic English-style My Wife’s Bitter, all-Australian Bighead low-carb and the European-style Duke Premium Lager and Duke Helles. Burleigh is also renowned for their seasonal beers, such as the Black Giraffe coffee lager and Fanny Gertrude’s Bickie Beer. But no matter how unusual the recipe, they only ever use the finest and most natural ingredients, so there are no additives, preservatives or chemicals. And despite their gold-medal-winning success, they refuse to become a mass producer and prefer to do everything by hand. Brewery tours with the brewmaster Brennan Fielding take place on the first Saturday of every month, from 2pm, and cost $20 each (bookings required). Attendees receive a sample glass of four of Burleigh’s tap beers and a Burleigh Brewing glass to take home. See burleighbrewing.com.au. Western Australia’s Feral Brewing Company: Since starting small in the Swan Valley in 2002, Feral Brewing has become WA’s largest independent brewery. The proudly familyowned and operated hand-crafted brewery was the winner of the 2012 Australian International Beer Awards’ Best Medium Australian Brewery

Burleigh Brewing Company

and then – after adding a second brewery to keep up with demand – took out the 2013 Australian International Beer Awards’ Best Large Australian Brewery. Feral’s experienced brewers are well-known for experimenting with exotic hops, spices and fruits to create unique, full-flavoured beers. Their flagship retail brands are the Feral White wheat beer, the Smoked Porter (with bacony undertones), the summery Sly Fox and the highly acclaimed Hop Hog, which is “as near to the perfect beer as you will find”, according to The Guardian. Feral’s on-site restaurant is open seven days from 11am and its modern Australian menu

complements the microbrewery’s offerings. For those after more, they also have 30-minute guided beer tours for groups of 10-30 people. Tours include food platters with six matching beers. See feralbrewing.com.au. Victoria’s Prickly Moses: Although a winery, Otway Estate decided to embrace beer and add a brewery to their site in 2007. They handcraft all their beers with a “gift of the gods”: pure rainwater from the lush Otway rainforest. Their current line-up includes the Otway Light Ale, the crisp Summer Ale, the session-style Organic Pilsner, the medium-bodied Otway Ale, the Celtic-style Red Ale, the caramel-toffee toned Otway Stout, the silky Farmhouse Ale, the French-style Reserve De Otway, the cleansing ChainSAW ale, the Spotted Ale (profits go to charity) and the refreshing Forbidden Fruit Original Cider. Prickly Moses’s factory outlet is open from Friday to Sunday, 11am-5pm. Their tasting paddles of five beers for $8 are great value and are an excellent way to experience their range. They also do pre-booked brewery talk/tasting sessions for groups larger than 20 (prices vary). See pricklymoses.com.au. n

BEER CAN CHICKEN Serves 4 to 6 • 1.8kg whole chicken • 2 sprigs of thyme or rosemary • 50g unsalted butter, melted, cooled • 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped • Sea salt and pepper • 375ml can beer (make sure it fits inside the chicken) • ½ lemon, cut into thin wedges • 1.5 tbsp flour • Mashed potato to serve Step 1: Preheat a barbecue (with hood) to medium-high. Rinse off the chicken and pat dry with paper towel. Step 2: Chop up one of the sprigs of thyme and combine with the butter and two-thirds of the garlic in a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Step 3: Pour (or drink!) one-third of the beer from the can, then push the lemon wedges, the remaining sprig of thyme and remaining garlic inside the can. Place the beer can upright on a baking tray, then sit the chicken on top so that the can is inside the cavity.

WITH BEER GRAVY

Possibly the best drunken idea ever, barbecued beer can chicken is easy, deliciously succulent (thanks to its steamy beer bathing) and never fails to impress a crowd. Enjoy!

Step 4: Use the beer can and the chicken’s legs like a tripod to keep it stable, then baste the chicken with the butter marinade. Step 5: Transfer the chicken in the tray to the barbecue. Close the lid and cook, basting occasionally, for 1.5 hours or until cooked through (the juices should run clear when the thigh is pierced with a skewer). Step 6: Remove the chicken from the barbecue (be careful as the can will be very hot). Allow to cool slightly, then remove the beer can from the cavity and set to one side. Rest, loosely covered with foil, for 15 minutes. Step 7: While the chicken is resting, strain the remaining beer into a small saucepan and place over medium heat until it comes to the boil. Step 8: Mix the flour in a small cup with about half a cup of water. Gradually pour the flour mixture into the saucepan, whisking as you go, until the mixture begins to thicken. Taste and add salt and pepper, if needed. Step 9: Carve chicken and serve with the beer gravy and mashed potato. n

MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER

T

he world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV, the Outlander PHEV, has just landed in Australia, marking the beginning of a new era for Mitsubishi Motors. Although this is the first of Mitsubishi’s sophisticated Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) systems, it won’t be the last, with Mitsubishi confirming that all-new versions of Pajero and ASX SUVs will feature variations of the fuel-optimising PHEV system. The Outlander PHEV is powered by Mitsubishi’s groundbreaking and highly efficient electric vehicle system. It consists of twin 60kW electric motors front and rear, a 12kWh lithium ion drive battery, 70kW output generator, lightweight front transaxle assembly and efficient 87kW 2-litre fourcylinder MIVEC petrol engine to significantly extend Outlander PHEV’s driving range. The petrol engine, which is tuned to run at optimum efficiency, supports the electric drivetrain system by recharging the drive battery and supplementing battery power in particular driving conditions. The Outlander PHEV will have a 5-star Green Vehicle Guide rating thanks to its official fuel consumption of 1.9 litres/100km and 52-kilometre pure electric range. The PHEV is able to achieve ultra-low fuel consumption and just 44g/km of CO2 emissions by maximising the best attributes of the combined internal combustion engine and electric vehicle systems.

48

Issue 34

This is delivered in three distinct modes: EV Drive Mode, Series Mode and Parallel Mode, which operated seamlessly without any intervention from the driver. EV mode is PHEV’s all-electric driving mode. In EV Mode, the front and rear motors drive the vehicle using only electric power from the drive battery, helping PHEV achieve an official range of 52 kilometres. When in EV Mode, CO2 emissions and petrol consumption are zero up to a maximum of 120km/h. In Series Mode, the PHEV uses the 2-litre petrol engine to recharge the stored battery energy and the electric motors use engine-generated electric power to drive the wheels. The system switches to Series mode when the remaining battery charge falls below a predetermined level or more performance is required, such as under high acceleration when overtaking or during a steep climb. The PHEV switches to Parallel Mode when it reaches highway or higher speeds or extra power is required. In Parallel Mode, the petrol engine provides drive to the front wheels with assistance from the electric motors. Fuel economy expert and former Australian rally champion Ed Ordynski said, “Mitsubishi Outlander’s petrol electric PHEV system is a clever way to reduce fuel consumption and extend a vehicle’s driving range. The PHEV system is tuned to optimise fuel efficiency, while its 52-kilometre electric range is very achievable and readily extended with

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

thoughtful driving. Once the PHEV’s battery power reaches low levels it is not simply running on petrol for the rest of the journey. Instead, the petrol engine recharges the batteries, allowing the PHEV to resume driving on full electric power to significantly extend the percentage of driving in the most efficient electric mode. Unlike internal combustion engine-powered cars and SUVs, PHEV can also return its best figures in stop-start, city and suburban driving where the on-board recharging and regenerative braking technology is quite extraordinary in maximising efficiency.” Mitsubishi Motors Australia’s Tony Principe said, “With the new Outlander PHEV, Mitsubishi has introduced advanced fuelsaving technology in a family sized SUV, enabling Australian drivers to enjoy the size, packaging and performance benefits of an SUV along with incredibly low fuel consumption.” The Outlander PHEV’s advanced electric vehicle system is underpinned by Mitsubishi’s sophisticated S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) 4WD system, which uses the PHEV’s twin electric motors to manage Outlander’s dynamic stability performance. PHEV’s integrated S-AWC system ensures it has the same high levels of grip and roadholding as a typical 4WD. For more information, see mitsubishimotors.com.au/vehicles/outlander-phev

Ramp up your relationship DEB RUSSO WRITING FOR MINING FAMILY MATTERS. SEE MININGFM.COM.AU

A

ll relationships can be tricky from time to time, but FIFO/DIDO relationships definitely require a little extra effort. Here, lifestyle advisor and parent Deb Russo shares her top tips to boost the va-va voom. • Take care of yourself, both physically and mentally. Find 10 minutes to sit and have a coffee. Read that book. Colour your hair. Do something that makes you feel good. Easier said than done? The television can be great for distracting children so you can gain a moment of sanity. Or use my trick: a game of hide and seek. Playing with the kids while hiding in the laundry painting my nails! Two birds with one stone. Being physically and mentally well increases your confidence, and that's sexier than any short skirt or low-cut blouse. • Have hobbies and interests of your own.

Investing in yourself this way will give you something other than the children to talk about with your other half. It will be a reminder of who you were before you became a partner and parent. Reminisce about your first dates and first months together. Remember what made you fall in love and how that made you feel. Boast about each other within earshot of your partner! I love going to a barbecue and telling friends that after 13 years my husband still rocks my world, especially if he can hear me. Do it with a smile and make sure they know it's for them. Touch more. Even when you are discussing little things like who is going to pick up the kids. Go on “dates” together whenever you can. Get dressed up for each other – and for yourself. Take it in turns to organise nights out.

• Buy each other little things every now and then for no reason. I'm not talking about flowers and diamonds every time, I'm talking about getting their favourite chocolate bar when you fuel up the car, or downloading their favourite song. It tells them that you're thinking of them. • Talk and laugh with each other every day. • Kiss each other for 10 seconds every day. It's one of my favourite parts of the day and I don't care where it happens. Often my kids will catch us in the kitchen, and for a while they screamed "oh gross mum!" But, as I said to them, the moment I stop kissing their father is the day they have to worry. Now they turn a blind eye and run. So there you go. It's not rocket science and it won't cost any money but I guarantee it will help keep your relationship fresh and alive. n

LIGHT UP THE DARK Christie Board takes a look at five of the best movies doing the rounds at this year’s winter film festivals.

20,000 DAYS ON EARTH Australian legend Nick Cave casts an elusive and striking figure in this gorgeous and inventive documentary about – and narrated by – the singer. Exploring his life and work in a surreal and dramatic manner, Cave strove to deliver a completely different experience to the typical rock’n’roll documentaries. The film scope is one day in the life of the cultural icon, personally examining his creative process and ultimately celebrating the power of artistic spirit. The documentary premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the awards for directing and editing and was nominated for the Grand July Prize. Not surprisingly, music plays a powerful role in the film, which was directed by Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard.

THE ROVER Fresh from its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival comes the hotly awaited follow-up to David Michod’s, Animal Kingdom. Filmed and depicted in the South Australian semi-desert, this visually atmospheric Western is bathed in blood and violence. Set 10 years after the collapse of Australia, the story follows loner Eric (Guy Pearce) as he seeks brutal revenge when a gang steals his last possession. He enlists the help of Reynolds (Robert Pattinson), an injured gang member left behind by his brother. Pearce delivers punchy dialogue with strength and grit, while co-star Pattinson proves his acting versatility as he is transformed from heartthrob to a stuttering, twitchy hick. Joel Edgerton received a writer’s credit for his work on the story.

JOE Nicolas Cage plays tough man Joe Ransom, an alcoholic and ex-con who forms unlikely friendship with a hard-luck local teen. Set in the contemporary American south, Joe is faced with the choice of redemption or ruin in this gritty, moving tale. Cage has been congratulated for his focused and heartfelt performance, which is a departure from his typical title roles. Director David Gordon Green, known for using locals in his film, gave the role of antagonist Wade to a local homeless man named Gary Poulter. He sadly died on the streets of Austin after filming ended.

PALO ALTO First-time director Gia Coppola continues her aunt’s legacy of delivering dreamy narratives in her debut film Palo Alto. The film perfectly captures the complexity and vulnerability of four angstridden American teenagers surviving in California. Based on a collection of loosely connected short stories written by James Franco, the narrative gives insight into the mind and life of the actor, who has admitted that some aspects are autobiographical. Franco also stars in the film as a divorced teacher and girls’ soccer coach, who initiates a romantic relationship with an insecure student named April (Emma Roberts). Val Kilmer makes a surprise cameo appearance as April’s quirky stepfather.

UKRAINE IS NOT A BROTHEL This award-winning, controversial documentary is about topless female activists from the Ukraine. These women are protesting against the apparent view of the world that Ukrainian women are just brides for sale or commodities for sex tourism. Australian filmmaker Kitty Green quit her job at the ABC to travel to her grandmother’s native Ukraine, where she stumbled upon a Femen protest. After being invited into their inner circle, she spent 14 months living and documenting these courageous girls. This daring decision has resulted in an eye-opening, intimate glimpse into the world’s most proactive feminist organisation. n

What a

JOKE!

I was in a pub in far northern Western Australia last Saturday night, when this brutally ugly girl came up to me, squeezed my arse and said, "Give me your number, sexy." I replied "Have you got a pen?" She smiled and said "Yes." So I said, "Well you better get back to it before the farmer notices you're missing."

Watching sit-coms with a wom called Tom.

A wife comes in and yells, “honey, pack your clothes! I just won the lottery!” Her husband yells back, “but what should I pack?” The wife replies, “I don’t care, just pack and get out!” A window salesman phoned a customer. “Hello Mr Brown,” said the sales rep, “I'm calling because our company replaced all the windows in your house with our triple-glazed weather-tight windows more than a year ago, and you still haven't sent us a single payment.” The customer replied, “But you said they'd pay for themselves in 12 months!” A bit of advice for those about to retire: if you're only 65, never move to a retirement community. Everybody else is in their 70s, 80s or 90s, so whenever something has to be moved, lifted or loaded they yell, “Get the kid!” Did you hear that someone broke into the local police station and stole the toilet? Right now the cops have nothing to go on. A carpenter walks on to a job site of a large company and hands the foreman his application. The foreman begins to scan the sheet and notices that the applicant has been fired from every job he has ever held. “I must say,” the foreman says, “your work history is terrible. You've been fired from every job you’ve had.” The carpenter replies “Hey!” while poking the application. “At least I'm not a quitter.”

When you’re ready to cancel movie night with the marsupial, fly in to the energy and engineering opportunities and legendary lifestyle of Taranaki, New Zealand.

My wife sat down next to me as I was flipping channels. She asked, “What’s on TV?” And I said, “Dust.” And then the fight started... I rear-ended a car this morning. The driver got out of the other car and he was a dwarf. He looked at me and said, “I am not happy!” So I said, “Well which one are you then?”

SAFETY BRIEFING Please listen carefully to the Safety Briefing and take the time to read through the Safety On Board Card prior to takeoff. This will help you familiarise yourself with the emergency exits, brace position and the location of your life jacket. DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT) It has been reported that some airline passengers have developed clots in deep blood vessels, often in the lower legs, as a result of sitting for an extended period without exercise or movement. This condition is known medically as Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT. If blood clot fragments break off and lodge in other areas of the body such as the lungs, they may cause a possible fatal pulmonary thrombosis when a person starts walking after being immobile for a long time. The risk factors for DVT include varicose veins, recent surgery or injury in the lower legs, malignant diseases, past history of DVT, obesity, pregnancy and recent childbirth. Anyone with these risk factors is advised to consult a doctor prior to flying to find out how to minimise the risk of DVT. During the flight, we recommend passengers take the following precautions: • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and minimise intake of alcohol. • Exercise onboard the aircraft by moving and stretching your toes, rotating your ankles, raising and lowering each leg and massaging your calves gently. In addition, we suggest that you avoid crossing your legs. SEATBELTS Seatbelts must be firmly fastened for take-off, landing and whilst the seatbelt sign is illuminated. We do recommend that your seatbelt be fastened at all times whilst seated in case of unexpected turbulence. TRAY TABLES/SEAT BACKS Please ensure your tray tables and your seat backs are in the upright position for take-off and landing. SMOKING Government regulations strictly prohibit smoking on all domestic flights. Special smoke detectors have been fitted to the toilet on board the aircraft. Smoking is also prohibited on the tarmac and throughout the terminal buildings. CARRY ON LUGGAGE If you have carry on luggage please stow it in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Hand luggage not correctly stowed may cause injury in the event of unexpected turbulence. ELECTRONIC DEVICES Hazards exist to aircraft systems by Electro-Magnetic Interference from Portable Electronic Devices. The interference can cause aircraft systems to malfunction. To provide adequate protection for the aircraft please note that: mobile phones are not to be used at any time on board the aircraft. Other devices such as compact disc players, portable palm top and lap top computers, cassette players, personal electronic organisers or personal video games may be used during cruise only, NOT when the aircraft is taking off and landing.
