DEAR LBIF COMMUNITY,

Daniella Kerner Executive Director dkerner@lbifoundation.org

This 2020 season is the most challenging we have ever faced in meeting our mission to bring people together to engage in shared experiences. But can you imagine life on LBI without the Foundation? I am pleased to tell you that we will be open this summer and prepared to nurture our vibrancy and remain a lively convener and catalyst for creativity and knowledge. With our distinctive blend of the arts, sciences, and cultural programs, the Foundation has for many generations offered a place to connect, create, and be inspired. Whether you are a first time visitor or a long time member, The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences offers an ever expanding variety of experiences, opportunities and educational programs.

The LBIF has accomplished much in the past few years, from increasing financial stability, offering many more events and programs, partnering with other non-profits and businesses, and forming new relationships with the varied special interest groups in the region. Our future is bright and there is much to accomplish! Boris Blai our founder, who in 1948 built the LBIF campus, was a brilliant, visionary artist and educator. As a 72 year old institution we continue to build upon his vision with these achievements. We draw inspiration from our idyllic setting; the earth, sky, and water that make Long Beach Island everyone’s ‘happy place’. Here, children create memories during their camper days and adults enjoy unique experiences that define summertime at the shore, whether it is a day, a week or an entire season. With the devastating COVID-19 world-wide outbreak, the LBIF as a non-profit organization cannot flourish without our members and the support of the community we serve. We are ever grateful to our longtime members who annually support us. The continued generosity of our members sustains the operations of the Foundation. Our future depends on this support to fund the development of outstanding cultural programs in the visual arts, performing arts and music, with films and film festivals, lectures and more. If you are not a member, please join! Every membership is meaningful – for us and for you - and each member, now more than ever, has a stake in our future. Listed in this catalog are the programs and events we have planned, with new and expanded programs in the arts, the eco-sciences, wellness, humanities and social events that enhance our engagement with each other – yes, even this year with its limitations. As we go to press, this catalog lists many events, but not all. As our season progresses, we will continue to add/change/adapt more “happenings” and “pop-ups”. To stay updated, please check our website, lbifoundation.org, join our email list to receive our weekly e-blast, check our social media sites and stop in to get a printout of our weekly schedule. Our activity is ongoing, and with your help we hope to make our small world a better place, while respecting safety and public health interests. I welcome your suggestions and ideas, your volunteerism, your contributions and your friendship. I am looking forward to sharing another wonderful summer with you on LBI! With my very best wishes to all, Daniella Kerner Executive Director May 29, 2020

COVID-19 RESPONSE (This Covid-19 Response is as of May 29, 2020. The LBIF continues to review guidelines published by New Jersey, Long Beach Island Township and the CDC. By the time you read this, there will be new updates and changes. Please use the 2020 Summer Catalog as a guide and be sure to check our website and weekly e-blasts for current updates to our programs and events. The Foundation will have a printout of current events each week available at our Front Desk). Over the past few months, coverage of COVID-19 (coronavirus) has dominated our lives. From mid-March until today, plans for our LBIF 2020 summer season continue to be adjusted in response to current news and evolving guidelines. In these uncertain times, and while formal re-opening standards are still coalescing, we are moving forward with resuming operations, while protecting the well-being and safety of our members, visitors, staff and the local community. We currently plan to open and begin offering programming on June 5th, with day camp starting in early July. Our tennis courts have been open to members since Memorial Day weekend. Operating through this summer will depend on our ability to maintain a safe and sanitary environment for all, while providing our patrons with all the memorable experiences and enjoyment we have grown accustomed to offering over the past 72 years! We will incorporate social distancing measures, including limiting building capacities and access to parts of our campus to guard against the spread of the virus and protect our employees and patrons. Face masks or face coverings will be required when visiting our campus. We are acquiring additional cleaning supplies and will focus the staff on cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfection. Space in our programs will be limited, and we ask members and patrons to make reservations online. Priority will be given to members, so if you are not a member, please be sure to join. For in-person registration, we will accept checks and credit cards. If you pay with cash, we ask you to please bring the exact fee so that our staff limits their exposure to handling cash to make change. The LBIF welcomes all, both visitors and members, to enjoy our offerings and facilities. Because our capacity will be reduced due to social distancing, particularly indoors, we encourage our members to register early for Camp, Tennis, Yoga & Fitness, events and classes. Please understand that we do not want to turn anyone away, but we must abide to whatever capacity limits are required. We invite you to join us and participate in whatever way you are comfortable. We will continue to strive to stay strong and vigilant to ensure safety during the time of COVID-19. We are dealing with expected and unexpected challenges due to both the virus and evolving federal, state and local guidance/protocols. Our goal is to ensure everyone has a safe and enriching experience this summer at the LBIF, and we look forward to seeing our campus come to life this summer! - The LBIF Board of Trustees and Staff

LBIF HISTORY & BORIS BLAI Founded in 1948 by Boris Blai, the LBIF is an outstanding community cultural facility. Dr. Blai, a student of sculptor Auguste Rodin and founding dean of the Tyler School of Art, Temple University, envisioned a facility that would foster individuals and their talents. The LBIF has continued this vision by offering thousands of classes, workshops, exhibitions, and educational programs to the community. Since its first season, the LBIF has committed itself to the enhancement of the creative arts and the physical sciences, and though it began as a seasonal operation, the LBIF has grown into a year-round organization providing a place for learning, free expression, and the exchange of ideas and understanding.

72 YEARS & GOING STRONG “Boris Blai was born in 1893 in Ravono, Russia, and received his early training in sculpture and painting at the Kiev and Leningrad Imperial Academies. In 1912 he arrived in Paris to study at the École des Beaux Arts with Emile-Antoine Bourdelle and Auguste Rodin, later becoming an assistant to the master sculptor, Rodin. Blai also studied bronze casting and portrait painting in Munich. In 1927 Blai secured his first teaching position at the Oak Lane Country Day School in Philadelphia. ‘Uncle Boris’ turned his studio into a workshop for the students, with classes in woodworking, clay models for casting and ceramic pieces. The teacher and students even created a fountain and a boat together. He inspired his students with confidence, and his philosophy became ‘No one can fail.’ ”

BLAI SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP

WHY MEMBERSHIP AND THE BLAI SOCIETY ARE SO IMPORTANT

DEAR LBIF COMMUNITY, The LBIF’s founder, Boris Blai, was five years old when the Russian Flu pandemic spread throughout his homeland in 1899. He survived. A prodigy sculptor, as a young man Blai left Russia to study with August Rodin before serving in the French Army during WWI. After the war, he moved to America at age 34. The year was 1918, the time of Spanish Flu. And so, twice in his young life, Blai found himself at the epicenter of a global pandemic. Once again, Boris survived. He established a reputation in the U.S. art world, partly by repairing Rodin sculptures for the Boston Museum of Fine Art. Blai was also quite an impresario; through a friend he’d met in the army, he became a fixture in Philadelphia arts and cultural circles. He befriended wealthy families, one of whom, Stella Elkins Tyler, donated her Melrose Park estate to be used as a school. There, in 1935, Blai established the Tyler School of Art, now part of Temple University. Apparently, two pandemics and the Great Depression did nothing to dent Boris’s ambitions or career trajectory. Thirteen years later, in 1948, Blai founded the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences. His idea was to bring together artists, musicians and thinkers to unwind, create, and be inspired by each other in a remote sandy niche tucked between the Atlantic Ocean and Barnegat Bay. 72 years later, Boris’s grand vision survives. Art and culture abound, and our expansive, open grounds still feel wild amidst the packed density of LBI. Like a trip backwards in time. The year is 2020, the time of Coronavirus. We have become the keepers of the flame Boris Blai lit back in the 1940’s. I’m confident he would be proud of the wide array of artistic and cultural programming and events offered in these pages – many of which will be delivered with creative twists to enable folks to come together in ways they feel comfortable and safe. But I believe Boris would be even more heartened by the fact that we are carrying on strong as ever, with a shared sense of purpose, powering through uncertainty and into better days ahead. This summer, we will inspire. We will rediscover joy. And we will share the grateful realization Boris must have had, gazing out over the marsh towards the water, breathing the salt air: how exhilarating it is just to be human, to be alive! Onward. ComX Exhibition Exhibit Dates Friday, July 24 – Sunday, August 16 Reception Saturday, July 25, 5:00-7:00pm Comic books, with their historic humble beginning in the early 20th century, are one of the most important and influential mediums today and have matured into works of art, literature, and cultural significance in their own right. As an ingrained part of our cultural lexicon, the characters, conventions, art, and language of comic books are everywhere; from film and entertainment, advertising, illustration and design, to political discourse. The comic book or graphic novel has provided an intriguing and entertaining look at trends in pop culture worldwide. Aspects of this powerful medium are the subject of a growing field of scholarship; from the styles of graphic design and imagery, to the written word, to the evolution of the super-hero. This exhibition will celebrate the work of more than 20 artists whose work captures the essence of what is comic.

THE NATURE TRAIL Life is fragile, especially on a barrier island. As we all know, Long Beach Island is a dynamic system, which is always changing. It is shaped by water - from ocean waves and the ebb and flow of the tidal estuary. As residents of the island, we are its guardians. In such a human-dominated landscape it is important for us to teach our children, our future, about how we impact our environment. At the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences, our work is focused on providing the tools, resources, and information for those who are interested in preserving this delicate ecosystem. To help highlight the fragility of our island and to

build a deep appreciation of the efforts to protect it, we created the Nature Trail. The Nature Trail allows visitors to get up close and personal with our saltmarsh, Barnegat Bay, and its inhabitants. A short walk down the Nature Trail gives visitors a glimpse into the life of ribbed mussels, mummichog, fish and nesting ospreys. We hope that a journey down the Nature Trail will inspire you to make bay-friendly choices that positively affect our island. We are its guardians, and only we can help ensure its survival.
