SUMMER 2022
WHO WE ARE LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DEAR LBIF COMMUNITY,
WHO WE ARE LBIF STAFF
Welcome to 2022 on LBI with family and friends, and with the Foundation! The Board and Staff have been hard at work preparing for a summer filled with lively programs for our community to enjoy. Our mission to nurture vibrancy of the arts and sciences, and to remain a lively convener and catalyst for creativity and knowledge, continues stronger than ever before.
Executive Director Daniella Kerner dkerner@lbifoundation.org
Please join us to experience LBIF’s varied cultural offerings, social gatherings, festivals, concerts, classes and workshops, and outstanding art exhibitions. A few highlights for this season are the return of our exceptional in-person Seashore House Tour featuring six magnificent homes, our Foundation Arts Festival, our Barnegat Bay Day, the Series @7 Concerts, and our back to summer Beach Ball and new Maskerade Party, to name just a few of the events you do not want to miss. Thank you to all the dedicated Committee Chairs and to the volunteers who make all these events possible.
Adult Programming Emily Miller emiller@lbifoundation.org
Events are updated regularly on LBIF’s new website! Join our email list to receive our weekly e-blast, follow our social media sites, and always feel free to stop in to visit and chat with us. For 74 years, the Foundation has offered a place to connect with others through a distinctive blend of the arts, the sciences and cultural programs for all ages. Our dynamic role in this community brings together people, places, and personal interests. Children build memories of their camper days and adults build a lifetime of memories of their summertime at the shore, whether it is a day, a week or an entire year. A non-profit organization cannot flourish without members. We are grateful to our longtime members and welcome our new members. It is this continued support that sustains the operations of the Foundation now and for the future. If you are not a member, please join the LBIF! Building a strong institution that strives for excellence requires passion, involvement, and commitment. I thank our staff, our Board, our members, our business community, and our visitors for their support. I look forward to sharing a renewed and wonderful summer with you at the LBIF. Our work is ongoing and with your help we hope to make our small world a better place for all, year round. My very best wishes to all, Daniella Kerner Executive Director May 2022

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
THE BOARD
What a journey the last two years has been. No one could have anticipated back in the summer of 2019—our last “normal summer”—that we would have spent the last two years weathering a devastating pandemic. Not one of us was untouched by COVID-19 in some respect. In fact, the last two years have likely been the most difficult of our collective lives.

FELLOW MEMBERS,
Nevertheless, we have persevered as an organization and, with the patience and understanding of our members and the incredible dedication of our wonderful staff, we are emerging from the pandemic stronger than ever. While similar cultural organizations and camps shut down for many months over the last two years, we never shut our doors. Our camps not only didn’t shut down, they actually expanded both in terms of the number of campers and with respect to the number of camp offerings. Our artistic and cultural offerings and events have continued to grow unabated. Whether art, film, science or music, our membership and the local community have had more options than to experience the Foundation. This is our core mission and despite the many challenges we’ve had to overcome to bring these events to you, our staff has made it a priority to do so in a safe and healthy environment. And now, as we are hopefully turning the page on COVID-19, it’s time to look forward with a renewed sense of hope, optimism and fellowship. In that spirit, I would like to encourage and challenge you all to lean in to help ensure an even brighter future for the Foundation. We can all contribute in some way, whether large or small; financially or in less tangible ways. More particularly, the following are just a few of the ways each of you can help: Membership Our membership is at an all-time high, as is our Blai and tennis memberships, which contributes significantly to the support of the Foundation. Nevertheless, our membership is the lifeblood of the Foundation and we must continue to nurture and grow it. In particular, we need to encourage young families to become members, as those families have the potential to sustain the Foundation for the next 20-30 years. So talk to your friends and neighbors. Educate them about all the Foundation has to offer for people of all ages. Bring them to the Foundation to visit. Send them to our new and vastly improved website to see for themselves all we have to offer. I am convinced that if we can engage them at some level, we can convince them to join us as members.
LBIF BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Gifts A significant part of our capital improvements are funded through the extreme generosity of our members. For example, just this year our Annual Appeal yielded enough to enable us to replace the roof on our main building. That roof, which should have been replaced at least five years ago, should now be good for the next 25-30 years. We sincerely thank those families who contributed to the Annual Appeal. The camp building roof, which is in extreme disrepair, needs to be replaced as well. For those who are interested in making a dedicated gift to this project, we hope to commence the replacement in September. 75th Year Anniversary As many of you know, 2023 will mark the 75th anniversary of the Foundation. Planning is already underway to make 2023 a very special year of continuous celebration. I encourage every member to contribute whatever they can—whether time, expertise, in-kind or monetary donations—to make this diamond anniversary special. I am extremely proud of what we have been able to accomplish during the greatest public health crisis of our lifetimes. I have no doubt that we are better positioned today to flourish for years to come than we have ever been. I am convinced that brighter days are ahead. Here’s wishing you all a safe and healthy 2022 and the best summer of your lives. Finally, I encourage all of you to take a few seconds to thank our staff when you are visiting the Foundation. We could not have made it through the past two years as successfully as we have without their hard work and dedication to keeping the Foundation the vibrant cultural center that it is today. Sincerely, Kevin M. Covert President, LBIF Board of Trustees

LBIF HISTORY & BORIS BLAI Founded in 1948 by Boris Blai, the LBIF is an outstanding community cultural facility. Dr. Blai, a student of sculptor Auguste Rodin and founding dean of the Tyler School of Art, Temple University, envisioned a facility that would foster individuals and their talents. The LBIF has continued this vision by offering thousands of classes, workshops, exhibitions, and educational programs to the community. Since its first season, the LBIF has committed itself to the enhancement of the creative arts and the physical sciences, and though it began as a seasonal operation, the LBIF has grown into a year-round organization providing a place for learning, free expression, and the exchange of ideas and understanding.
Marvin Levitt sculpting Boris Blai
74 YEARS & GOING STRONG “Boris Blai was born in 1893 in Ravono, Russia, and received his early training in sculpture and painting at the Kiev and Leningrad Imperial Academies. In 1912 he arrived in Paris to study at the École des Beaux Arts with Emile-Antoine Bourdelle and Auguste Rodin, later becoming an assistant to the master sculptor, Rodin. Blai also studied bronze casting and portrait painting in Munich. In 1927 Blai secured his first teaching position at the Oak Lane Country Day School in Philadelphia. ‘Uncle Boris’ turned his studio into a workshop for the students, with classes in woodworking, clay models for casting and ceramic pieces. The teacher and students even created a fountain and a boat together. He inspired his students with confidence, and his philosophy became ‘No one can fail.’ ”

ELEMENTAL EFFECTS
Elemental Effects: Water + Wind + Earth + Fire Exhibit Dates June 11 – July 4, 2022 Reception Saturday, June 11, 6:00pm - 8:00pm This exhibition pays tribute to the all-abiding effects of water, wind, earth, and fire that have been forming planet Earth since its inception, and that account for the precise conditions that enable life. Instead of presenting abstractions, symbols, and representations, the works of art manifest the influence of these almighty forces because they were formed by actual charring, saturating, melting, freezing, eroding, dissolving, sprouting, combusting, or other processes that account for the dynamics of our planetary home. Juror Talk with Linda Weintraub Biophilia: A Homesteading Adventure Date Saturday, June 11, 5:00pm This illustrated talk will provide evidence of the functional interdependence and aesthetic correspondence with the site that such design principles strive to achieve. It will also describe the emotional fulfillment afforded by cultivating rapport with the environs, a source of gratification that human-centered design typically lacks. My engagement with biophilic design principles extends beyond these architectural and landscaping ventures. They also inspire my homesteading practices, my curating, art-making, and writing. Indeed, they provide the ethical foundation for all my beliefs and behaviors.
LINDA WEINTRAUB, ELEMENTAL EFFECTS JUROR

The Member + Student + Faculty Exhibition showcases the talents and accomplishments of the LBIF “family.” Each year, this exhibition demonstrates the excitement and love of the arts that LBIF has been know for during its 74 year history. This exhibition of work produced in the past year is by far the most popular exhibition, drawing family, friends, colleagues, neighbors, teachers, and students together to celebrate the end of another summer with a friendly, welcoming reception. Katherine Whitlock
ABOUT Julie Langsam, Member + Student + Faculty Juror Throughout her 35-year career Julie Langsam has examined issues of beauty, idealization, and the interconnected legacy of stylistic tropes, in work that spans painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, film, video and installation. Best known for her paintings of iconic Modernist buildings designed by celebrated architects such as Walter Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier, Langsam’s work playfully negotiates and questions the legacy of modernism on contemporary culture. Her representations of toxic landscapes reference the painterly sublime, serving as the ground for modernist architectural marvels, structures that evoke notions of failed utopias. Trained as both a photographer and a painter, Langsam has recently returned to her lens-based practice to focus her attention on the American landscape. Since 2018, she has driven over 32,000 miles filming and photographing the landscape of the United States, and speaking to people about local land-use issues across the country. Her first short film “Garden State” will soon be released, and her feature-length experimental documentary is in post-production.

Langsam has exhibited nationally and internationally. Former Motto Endowed Chair and Head of Painting at the Cleveland Institute of Art, Langsam is currently Associate Professor at Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

Juror Talk with Juliana Ochs Dweck Crossing Boundaries: Building a Museum for the 21st Century Date Sunday, September 18, 2:00pm Dominic Martelli, First Place 2021
JULIANA OCHS DWECK, PLEIN AIR PLUS JUROR
The Princeton University Art Museum is building a bold and welcoming new building, designed by the world-renowned Ghanaian-British architect Sir David Adjaye and planned to open in Fall 2024. Just as an interest in contemporary life sent the plein air painters of the 19th century into the countryside to develop new painting techniques and experiment with new ways of seeing, contemporary concerns and values shape the curatorial vision for the new building. Important landscape painters—from Robert Duncanson, Albert Bierstadt and Alfred Sisley, to Marsden Hartley, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Josephine Meckseper—will be presented in new ways that cross media, cultures, and time. In this talk, Juliana Ochs Dweck, Chief Curator at the Princeton University Art Museum, will describe the boundarycrossing plans for the future collections galleries. ABOUT Juliana Ochs Dweck Plein Air Plus, Juror Juliana Ochs Dweck is chief curator at the Princeton University Art Museum. At Princeton, the exhibitions she curated and organized include Miracles on the Border: Retablos of Mexican Migrants to the United States (2019), Time Capsule 1970: Rauschenberg’s Currents (2019), Picturing Protest (2018), Surfaces Seen and Unseen: African Art at Princeton (2016), and By Dawn’s Early Light: Jewish Contributions to American Culture from the Nation’s Founding to the Civil War (2016). Dweck’s career spans art, history, and identity museums, including the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia, and the National September 11 Memorial Museum in New York. An anthropologist BA Yale University, PhD University of Cambridge, she is the author of Security and Suspicion: An Ethnography of Everyday Life in Israel (Penn Press, 2011), and has written about materiality, memory, and museum practice.

THE SCIENCES EXPLORE FIELD WORK Experience one of the last large saltwater marshes on LBI. The marsh is part of the LBIF’s Nature Trail that was created to provide a unique and peaceful experience for lovers of nature, scientists and artists. It is home to a diverse array of wildlife and provides critical ecosystem services to our coastal community. Visit and understand the value of this estuary with its surrounding wetlands that help stabilize shorelines, protect inland habitats, and defend human property from coastal flooding and sea level rise. Learn about the important role of our marshes in reducing climate change, as they act as a sponge to reduce carbon and hold other pollutants as well. In the coming years and decades, our salt marshes will be on the front line of a rising sea. Participate in field work to identify the species, monitor their health, calculate their number and stabilize their habitat. Every action to reduce our environmental impact today will increase the chance that places like this will be around for future generations to visit and admire.
Field Work: Study Through Observation Date Check our website for dates and times Individuals and families are encouraged to come observe, take samples, and record their findings with scientists, guides, and experts. THE NATURE TRAIL
Venture along the half mile trail to the osprey blind and Barnegat Bay. Along the meandering trail you will come across a mix of both native and non-native vegetation. Some of the native shrubs and trees that you will see include winged sumac, bayberry, beach plum, serviceberry, black cherry, red maple, and red cedar. Some highly invasive species are: common reed and Japanese honeysuckle. Please stay on the trail as poison ivy grows along the edges. In partnership with the LBIF, Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey assisted with the design and enhancement of the Nature Trail.
The Nature Trail was created to provide a unique and peaceful experience for visitors of the last wild Bayfront properties on Long Beach Island. As the largest (privately owned) preserved saltmarsh on the island, it is home to a diverse array of wildlife and provides critical ecosystem services to our coastal community. From a barrier island perspective, the saltmarsh is our Foundation. Estuaries and their surrounding wetlands help stabilize shorelines, protect inland habitats, and defend human property from coastal flooding and sea level rise. They also play an important role in reducing climate change, as they act as a carbon sink. Although when coastal wetlands are damaged, their ability to sequester carbon can be lost. In the coming years and decades, our salt marshes will be on the front line of a rising sea. Every action to reduce our environmental impact today, will increase the chance that places like this will be around for future generations to visit and admire. - Ben Wurst, Conserve Wildlife
