LONG BEACH ISLAND FOUNDATION OF THE ARTS AND SCIENCES 2018 ANNUAL SEASHORE OPEN HOUSE TOUR 1

Once again, we are honored to take part in the LBIF Annual House Tour. This year, we are showcasing not one, but two KHE homes: House #4 and House #6. Our ability to transform complex architectural plans into a high-quality residence is what we offer. A KHE home is beautifully efficient. We can build one for you.

Welcome Welcome to the 2018 Annual Seashore Open House Tour

Welcome to our celebration of the 70th Anniversary year of the LBIF, and to the 52nd anniversary of our annual House Tour! Boris Blai In 1948 Boris Blai and his team of Founding Members dreamed of and built the LBIF building and campus. They engaged Philadelphia architect George Daub to lead the way by creating one of the first modernist architectural statements on LBI with the design of our iconic building with its distinctive roofline. This building is centered on a spectacular 21 acres with a splendid wetlands vista. So began the future of contemporary architectural statements on LBI; art, architecture, landscape design and science working together. The Homeowners We hope that you are inspired and exhilarated as you tour the beautiful homes that are showcased on this House Tour. These generous homeowners invite more than 700 people into their homes and share, both inside and out, their unique design ideas with us. We at the LBIF are very grateful to them for opening up their personal sanctuaries for this special day.

The Volunteers In addition to thanking our special homeowners, there is an extensive volunteer committee, led by our House Tour Chair, Ginger Black. They have worked tirelessly all year long to make the House Tour a success and without them this event could not be possible. Our Mission The LBIF Annual House Tour is our largest fundraiser. All funds raised by the House Tour go directly toward financing the essential operations of the LBIF, allowing us to continue to meet our mission of offering innovative arts and sciences as well as a variety of cultural programming to the community. Here’s to the next 70 years of success. Enjoy!! With gratitude, Daniella Kerner Executive Director LBI Foundation of the Arts & Sciences

Four Quick Tips Four quick tips to make your 2018 House Tour memorable

Tip One Before you start the Tour, thumb through the images of each house. Ask yourself, “What do I want to get out of this? Am I looking for ideas for my bathrooms or my backyard? Do I prefer the beach side or the bay? Or, how can I custom renovate my little Cape Cod hideaway?” If you identify the homes that provide some answers, it will help you remember designs and services that are relevant tomorrow.

Tip Three Early in the day, plan where you want to have lunch or dinner. On page 31 of this Tour Guide, there is a list of restaurants who know you’re out there today! Be sure to call ahead and ask if they have Tour Specials.

Tip Two Spread out. We expect hundreds of people on tour today. Your enjoyment and comfort are our primary goals as you visit each home. You don’t need to start at the north end and go south. All homes are open from 10:30 to 4:30.

Hopefully, this will make your day enjoyable. Today is all about you. Thank you for coming.

Check the map on page 7, and start where you like, but make a conscious choice. There may be a shorter line just around the corner. This year, there are three homes clustered in the north end, two south of Harvey Cedars, and one home just below the causeway in Ship Bottom. If the first home you come to looks particularly jammed with cars, move to the next, then circle back. 4

Tip Four See page six which has all the directions and rules to make your visit pleasurable, exciting and informative.

The owners of this magnificent beachfront house named it North Star, in keeping with its harmony with the skies over the sea and dunes. An armillary sphere is in the garden near the guest house, and a bronze sculpture in the atrium represents the essence of refreshment and togetherness. Architect Jay Madden and Tilton Builders situated the house so that every room has views of the ocean, the pool area or the gardens. Cherry floors are inlaid with compass roses, the largest of wood and stone from Asia. Throughout the house are marble counters and tabletops, built-in cabinetry and unique tiles and stonework. Complementing pieces from around the world is a collection of nautical scenes by local artists. Between the Sheets created serene and cozy rooms despite the size of the house. The owners work closely with gardeners Paul Quattrocchi and Don Brown to maintain and enhance the extensive gardens.

This remarkable “Net Zero Energy” home is created to take full advantage of its oceanfront site. Each floor provides an individual connection to the outdoors. Upon entering you are greeted by a pneumatic elevator and the unique “Bird Cage” staircase. The ground level rec room/gym connects to the Bali inspired dune garden and patio. The second floor houses a compact office, four private bedrooms and a large family room. Two of the bedroom suites have tree top ocean views from an expansive covered deck. The third floor open-living space provides breathtaking, unrestricted views of the ocean; the movement of vessels in and out of the inlet provide constant entertainment. Every detail and finish of this home has been carefully planned to ensure green sustainability, design integrity and family comfort. The owners’ eclectic art collection has been lovingly curated throughout their travels.

The owners purchased this house 20 years ago and have overseen two major renovations, working closely with architects Jay Madden and builder Kenneth Kennard to expand the size, enhance the beauty of the exterior and create a spacious, comfortable home. Designer Kristin Nissen of Between the Sheets chose patterns on the furniture fabrics in keeping with the owners’ desire for color and warmth. The first floor entrance foyer is flanked by two elegant bedrooms in one wing and a guest suite with a sitting area in the other. Upstairs the great room looks out on the bay and boasts an outside deck, an enclosed porch and a kitchen with distinctive granite counters and handpainted cabinets. Across the catwalk are the master suite and a den with a full bathroom and a pocket door for privacy. Landscaper Mark Reynolds maintains the gardens surrounding this stately home.

This bayside beauty with a coppertrimmed roof was designed by Jay Madden and built by KHE Construction. Throughout the house, there are shiplapped walls, French white oak floors and Shaker-style doors. The many decks with bay views have stainless steel cables connecting the posts. The second floor has a family room leading to a large cedar porch, four bedrooms and three bathrooms. Matching bunk beds, each with a single bed over a double, are against one wall of the largest bedroom. On the third floor, a salvaged barn door leads to the kitchen pantry. The same barn wood is used for an island with a concrete counter, for custom-made corbels on another island and for kitchen shelving. The master suite includes a bathroom with acrylic windows in the shower, a round porcelain tub and heated flooring. The lovely backyard has a pool and is landscaped by Kline Brothers.

The owners of this beautiful bayfront home have enjoyed time with family and friends in Surf City for many years. When they decided to sell their house and build a larger one, they worked closely with architect Craig Brearley and builder Thomas Keller to create a custom home. Metal roofing, mahogany trim, cedar ceilings and a Belgian block driveway give distinction to the outside of the house. The great room has a coffered ceiling and a stunning kitchen designed by Francie Milano, with blue accents and a curved center island. Each of the children’s bedrooms has a unique feature--a window seat, a small balcony or a bay view. Barn doors can close off bedroom wings for privacy. Unusual antique doors were custom-fit for the den. The stained glass windows in the great room and at the entrance to the roof deck are from the owners’ former home.

This delightful home is an architectural success story. When the owners rebuilt on the site of a former fisherman’s cottage, they utilized every inch of space, with a vertical thrust to create a comfortable, livable home. The house encompasses four levels: the ground floor features a foyer and master bedroom; the second, a living room/kitchen leading to a porch; the third, a sitting room; the fourth, an office and a sewing room leading to an additional porch. The vaulted ceiling in the sitting room, the vertical lines on the closet doors and the squared doorknobs contribute to the vertical theme. When the owner requested a driftwood look on the oak floors, KHE Construction bleached the wood, dried it with industrial fans and hand-mixed the stain. The artist-owner designed the interior, making the dried flower arrangements and textile accessories. The backyard features an outdoor kitchen and potted garden.

Thank you. A Word of Thanks This is the seventieth year of the LBI Foundation and the fifty-second year for the house tour. The longevity and success of both would not be possible without the continued support and dedication of the members, volunteers, advertisers, staff, sponsors and, in the case of the house tour, the homeowners. Those people number in the hundreds each year, and in the fifty-two years in the thousands. Volunteers This year there will be two hundred volunteers who have participated in its success. Adults and children benefit from their generosity. I would like to thank the house tour steering committee: Kay Binetsky, Bonnie Korbeil, editors; Dianne Ahto, Jeannette Michelson, photographers; Tracey Cameron, graphic designer; Rick Bushnell, past president of LBIF; Carol Nussbaum, artist; and Lynn Billingham, long-time chairperson.

LBIF staff The LBIF staff tended to numerous details for us: thank you to Jillian Schratz, Lydia Owens, John Imperiale, Dean Adams and Daniella Kerner. Sponsors We are so grateful to our sponsor, Woodhaven Lumber and Millwork, for our house tour preview event with architects Sam Gordon and Jay Madden. Thank you to the architects, builders and designers who helped find the homes and demonstrated their art and science expertise that brought these lovely homes to completion. Homeowners Finally, thank you to our homeowners who allowed us into their interesting, informative and beautifully designed homes to learn more about how this is all accomplished inside and out. We hope you will enjoy this day as much as we have enjoyed creating this for you and the Foundation.

House captains Thank you to the house captains: Ginger Black David Costain, Denise Avagliano, Eileen Schwartz, Patsy and Rick Bushnell, Debbie House Tour Chair Floyd and Cathy Sutton; they scheduled all the volunteer hostesses and worked with our homeowners.
