Did you know that reading to your child is the single most important way to help children get ready to read? Formal education does not typically start until ages 4 -5 , and parents and caregivers are the first education providers during the critical early years. Taking part in our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program encourages bonding, promotes the development of early literacy skills and helps give kids the tools they need to succeed in school.
Read 1,000 different books or read the same book 1,000 times.
Register your child for the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge in Beanstack or the Beanstack App and log your child’s reading to earn badges. Earn your 1000 Books badge and receive a prize from your local library. Visit lclibrary.ca/ beanstack on information on how to register for this challenge.
Lambton Remembers - Talk and Film Screening - Andrew Robertshaw and “They Shall Not Grow Old” Wednesday, November 2 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Did you know a library card gets you access to items you can use to explore the outdoors this winter?
In partnership with Lambton Public Health, Lambton County Library provides free access to borrowing snowshoes, GPS units, walking poles and pedometers that can be used in tandem with other items like an Ontario Parks Pass to help you explore outdoors easily!
Snowshoes are available for a 7-day loan period. You can place holds on snowshoes through the Library’s online catalogue and they will be delivered to your local library. Please note that only four pairs of snowshoes can be borrowed per library card. Adult sizes and kids’ sizes are available.
Pedometers are devices that you wear to measure the distance traveled on foot by recording the number of steps being taken. Pedometers have proven to be successful in motivating people to walk more. Pedometers are available for a 21-day loan period.
GPS (Global Positioning Systems) are used to track your current location. GPS devices can be used to go geocaching. Geocaching is an activity that uses GPS coordinates to lead people on a type of treasure hunt. Containers (or caches) are hidden at specific coordinate locations all over the world, including Lambton County. GPS Devices are available at your local library for a 21-day loan period. Geocaching is a fun way to increase physical activity levels, and to explore local trails.
Walking poles may be used year round to help activate muscles in your upper body as well as the lower body when walking for an effective overall workout. Adjustable walking poles are available in two sizes for a 7-day loan.
Get your library card and take your family on an adventure this holiday season!
Help guide your child to get a head start on early literacy at Lambton County Library. Early literacy is what kids know about reading and writing before they can actually read and write. The following five activities support your child’s development of early literacy skills. In addition, reading 1,000 books before Kindergarten promotes literacy and encourages parent and child bonding through reading. Visit Lambton County Library and start your own 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge with your child today.
Reading together is the single most important way to help children get ready to read. Reading together increases vocabulary and general knowledge. It helps children learn how print books work. Shared reading also helps children develop an interest in reading. Children who enjoy being read to are more likely to want to learn how to read themselves.
Reading and writing go together. Both represent spoken language and communicate information. Children can learn pre-reading skills through writing activities.
Children learn language and other literacy skills by listening to their parents and others talk. As children hear spoken language, they learn new words and what they mean. They learn about the world around them and important general knowledge. This will help children understand the meaning of what they read.
Songs are a wonderful way to learn about language. Singing also slows down language so children can hear the different sounds that make up words. This helps when children begin to read printed language.
Children learn a lot about language through play. Play helps children understand that spoken and written words can stand for real objects and experiences. Play also helps children express themselves and put thoughts into words.
