Ricardo Cavolo
Ricardo Cavolo: ‘101 Artists to Listen to Before You Die’ Originally hailing from Spain and residing in his adopted home of Brighton, rising star artist and illustrator Ricardo Cavolo’s most recent project is a visual diary of marrying his passion for music and portraits. Not one to do things by halves, Ricardo has created portraits of 101 (yes, one HUNDRED and one!) of his favourite musicians and compiled them into ‘101 Artists to Listen to Before You Die’. The book’s launch is being accompanied by an exhibition at the Atomica Gallery in Soho until May 9th.

Chronicle of a Life Untold “Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.” When Samuel Johnson penned these famous words in 1777, life in London was very different: King George III sat on the throne, Uranus was about to be discovered and parliament debated how best to deal with the American upstarts on the other side of the pond. LE BON FLOWER MARKET
Columbia Road Flower Market
Imagine a lazy morning after a lie in. It’s Sunday, and you can see the sun beaming through the window blinds, and you’re even having breakfast in bed! What’s the next step in this day from heaven? Don’t say staying in! Rather, let’s (re)discover Columbia Road Flower Market.
Once in Shoreditch, you can play Tom Thumb to find your way to Columbia Road. Instead of following pebbles or breadcrumbs, keep your eyes on people coming back with bunches of flowers, plants, and bay leaf trees (well, okay, not necessarily bay leaf trees, but I like that name). Anyway, you’re almost there, immersed in an oasis of colours and perfumes that would make the grumpiest of cats feel like singing along with the birds. The charming tiny street, with its independent galleries, shops and restaurants, is overflowing with all the flowers, herbs, shrubs, plants, bedding plants, and bulbs that you can dream about. Of course, it is also overcrowded, so it’s better to arrive early (it opens at 8am) or when it finishes (3ish) if you want to escape nudges and people treading on your toes. Apart from that detail, it’s all about beauty and a joyful atmosphere! If you haven’t had enough, afterwards dive into the craziness of the Sunday Up Market on Brick Lane. Savour a spicy meal among the incredible variety of food stalls (Mexican, Vietnamese, Brazilian, Turkish… and French, obviously) and shop for vintage clothes to fill up your summer wardrobe. Sounds nicer than being a Sunday couch potato, doesn’t it? P.S. Wanna hear a funny story? The very first time I went to Columbia Road Market I was on a date. Two months after, the guy dumped me on the phone telling me he was moving to Bermuda (seriously??). And guess what? A couple of months after, I bumped into him… at the market. With another girl... Ouch! But I would never blame it on the market. I blame it on the douche! - DÉBORAH BANNWARTH
