Mostly C - Ambivert!

You’re an ambivert! You love talking to others but you also thoroughly enjoy time alone. You have a lot to say but you don’t have to be the loudest one in the conversation to enjoy it. You oscillate between introversion and extroversion, but almost always end up somewhere in the middle.

This year for the third time, my family is spending the year in Paris. The previous years were 2009-10 when I was 3, and 2013-14 when I was 7. Although I speak French fluently from my previous visits, I am enrolled in the IB program in EJM. This was so the curriculum would remain closely aligned to the one of my school in New York. One of the differences between NYC and Paris is sports, which is an area that I’m very much interested in. In particular, I will talk about myexperiences in Paris involving baseball, judo, and ultimate frisbee.

As you might already know, baseball is not that common in France. When we originally looked into baseball leagues around the Paris area, the only team we could find was the PUC (Paris University Club) baseball team, situated in the Bois de Vincennes. While I was excited for my first practices and games, the season has turned out to be disappointing for several reasons. Firstly, the practices were poorly attended, which left me sometimes practicing with only one or two other players. Secondly, I have only been able to play 6 innings total and have received a total of two at-bats. I think this has been because I joined the team in the middle of their season.

In the late innings of my second game, the coaches put me in right field. For those who don’t know, the coaches will stick a player in right field so that he has the least chance of screwing up. Nevertheless, the first pitch of that inning was a line drive hit directly at me, which I caught. Still riding that high a couple minutes later, I would strike out on 4 pitches. Unfortunately this would be one of my only opportunities before the end of the season, so I’m hoping that the start of next season will go better for me.

Not only do I enjoy playing baseball, I also support and like watching baseball, in particular the New York Mets, my favorite team since 2015. This year they had one of their best regular-seasons ever, won 100 games, and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2016. As the date of the playoffs crept closer, I realized that if I wanted to watch the Mets play their playoff games, I would have to make some sleep-related sacrifices. For Game 1 of their series, first pitch time was set for 1 a.m. Paris time. So my sister and I woke up at 12:30 a.m., turned on the game, and watched New York get blown out for three hours. After an other defeat, the Mets had beeneliminated in oneweekend. All that supporting and sleep-sacrifice from across the world just to get eliminated early.

My sports playing is not just restricted to the baseball diamond, as I do judo and play ultimate frisbee as well. I ama beginner in judo, having picked it up again after not training since 2018. I take lessons every Monday, and am slowly starting to come along after forgetting many moves andcombinations. My friend Yanir is also part of the class, but he is a brown belt and has flipped me on many occasions. A couple of weeks ago, he challenged me to fight him, and then proceeded to flip me onto my back around a dozen times for the next 5 minutes. Safe to say, I will not be fightinghim until I can begin to hold my own.

For ultimate frisbee, I practice with the U-20 PUC team, and play pick-up every Sunday with my father. One of the greatest thrills I get when playing sports is when we connect for touchdowns. In a recent pick-up game, we were playing our last point and I just caught the disc
