Pathfinders

This course is for students who want to develop skills to increase their independence within a supported

environment. This personalised programme includes activities that enable students to work towards their

individual goals and aspirations to build a fulfilling life.

Life Skills

Students who study Life Skills work towards

becoming semi-independent. Many students aspire to move into supported living and lead fulfilling lives as active members of their community.

Living and Working

This course allows students with learning

difficulties or disabilities to gain essential

employability skills through workplace learning.

This course emphasises employability skills to prepare students for the working world. Many students

aspire to live independently (perhaps with low levels of support) and secure voluntary or paid work.

87

Progress is highly personalised on all three

pathways and learning activities are designed to

enable each student to work towards their targets. Learning activities tend to be practical and the

emphasis is on enjoyment. English and maths skills are embedded into all learning activities as well as taught separately, so students can develop

these skills in a functional way. Where appropriate,

learners can gain English and maths qualifications.

Progression – Supported Internships

Supported internships are structured study programmes based at an employer’s organisation. They are

intended to enable young people with learning

difficulties and/or disabilities to achieve sustainable, paid employment by equipping them with the skills

they need for work, through learning in the workplace. In some cases, the college will work in partnership with employers and learners to provide a

smooth transition into supported internships.

The sky’s the limit!

I started at Keighley College and now I run my own business, Enkahnz Body Repair, where I’ve worked with a number of famous and high profile clients.

I joined Keighley College in 1997 and enrolled on a light vehicle mechanical course before progressing to a Level 3 vehicle body repair course. During this time, I gained the Apprentice of the Year award as well as the National Adult Learners Award.

Following employment at Nationwide, I founded my own small business, starting with a unit and eventually expanding to the present day million-pound complex. I specialise in vehicle body customisation and although my business covers other areas, I enjoy the hands-on approach and I’m often in my workshop using the skills I learnt at Keighley College. I’ve stayed in touch with my old tutor John Thornham and I still support Keighley College. I often return to college to give speeches to current students with practical tips and advice. It’s nice that John considers me a role model for his current students.

My experience of higher education at Keighley College has been amazing! I started my learning journey at Keighley College with an Access to HE course. My foundation degree has really shown me how many exciting career paths are available, I’m now working as a teaching facilitator at the college within the service professions team and plan on continuing studying for a health and social care degree.
