OUR OFFERING At University Centre Leeds, we understand, support and welcome everyone’s differences. We know that one size doesn’t fit all, that’s why we offer foundation, top-up, postgraduate and masters degrees as well as foundation degrees with foundation year, higher and degree apprenticeships, HNC/Ds and teacher training qualifications. FOUNDATION DEGREE AND TOP-UP DEGREE ROUTE

Our foundation degree and top-up degree route ensures you achieve the same level of qualification, in the same number of years, as a traditional honours degree programme. Our offering is condensed into two or two and a half days per week, giving you time for other commitments. Foundation degrees are respected qualifications that develop specific expertise in conjunction with employers, relevant to particular sectors. They generally last two years, are industry-focused and are the same level as studying the first and second year of a full honours degree. They can lead to one year top-up courses that raise a foundation degree or HND to a full honours degree.

FEES AND FUNDING ucleeds.ac.uk

26

TUITION FEES

Bursaries are means-tested and will depend on your performance. You don’t need to apply separately for these as they will be administered by University Centre Leeds automatically. Please visit our website for details on fees for individual courses.

Don’t worry, funding is on-hand to help. Tuition fee loans are available to cover course costs regardless of household income. These are paid to us by the Student Loans Company. You only pay back according to how much you earn, once your salary is over £26,575.

WORKING OUT YOUR BUDGET

The calculator at gov.uk/studentfinance-calculator will give you an estimate of how much student finance you may be entitled to before you apply.

Ineligible or self-funding students will need to pay an initial payment of 25% at enrolment. This is followed by six consecutive monthly direct debit payments to cover the remaining tuition fee for that academic year. Part-time students are eligible for loans if they are completing at least 25% of the equivalent full-time course load each year.

REPAYING STUDENT LOANS

You will only start repaying your loans for fees and living costs from the financial year after you graduate when your income is above £26,575. If your income falls below this amount, your repayments will stop. The repayment rate is 9% of your income above £26,575, so the amount you repay will depend on what you earn, not how much you borrow.

Changes to student finance regulations are published regularly. Potential government policy changes may impact available funding. More information can be found at gov.uk/studentfinance or studentfinanceengland.co.uk.

The loan will be written off after 30 years if you have not repaid the full amount. Information on how much you will repay is available at gov.uk/ repaying-your-student-loan/what-you-pay.

Students can apply for loans to help with living costs. The maximum amount varies each year and the amount you can receive will depend on household income. Visit gov. uk/student-finance for more information. Additional non-repayable support such as Parents’ Learning Allowance, childcare funding and Disabled Students’ Allowance can pay for any extra study costs that may be incurred due to children or disability. We also have a generous bursary scheme available to full-time students.

27

ucleeds.ac.uk

DISABLED STUDENTS’ ALLOWANCES (DSA)

If needed, the dedicated support staff will help you apply for DSA. They are paid on top of other finance and help cover costs you incur due to your disability. They don’t have to be repaid and the amount given is based on your individual needs. DSAs can help with the costs of specialist equipment, assistive technology, non-medical helpers, extra travel allowance and other disability-related costs. If it is determined through the assessment process that you need a specific computer, you may need to pay the first £200. Please ask the HE Learning Support Officer for more information.

This helps with childcare costs and is dependent on household income. This grant is in addition to student finance and doesn’t need to be repaid. Please visit gov.uk/childcare-grant for more information.

We provide careers advice and help with progression. We can support with CVs, applications, interviews, placements, internships, postgraduate study and general guidance. Your course tutors will also assist with your study and progress.

STUDENT CASE STUDY LAUREN HOODLESS FASHION, THEATRICAL AND MEDIA HAIR AND MAKEUP

Fashion, Theatrical and Media Hair and Makeup graduate makes it as a makeup artist. With a new wave of beauty influencers, social media professionals and YouTube stars, the next generation of makeup extraordinaries are already pursuing creative careers as makeup artists (MUAs). Yet, what separates

the amateurs from the professionals is qualifications, work experience and a captivating portfolio. We managed to snag a few moments with Lauren

Hoodless about her experience at University Centre Leeds, her role as a freelance MUA and advice for aspiring artists.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE UNIVERSITY CENTRE LEEDS?

After studying a BTEC in Media Makeup at Stockport College, I visited a variety of university courses across the country. I was really impressed by the open day at University Centre Leeds and felt the course was going to

cover everything I was hoping for. I also really trusted that the staff were committed to our success and invested in the course, which was reassuring. WHAT DID YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT STUDYING AT UNIVERSITY CENTRE LEEDS?

I think it was really great how much free reign we were given in terms of how we interpreted our practical briefs, and received so much support and guidance from the staff every step of the way. I feel like my confidence in areas such as prosthetics developed massively due to the tutor's help, the extra sessions provided, as well as the equipment and products that were always readily available. I found the course offered a really good balance of theory, practice, teaching and guest speakers. HOW DO YOU APPLY THE SKILLS YOU LEARNT ON THE COURSE IN YOUR JOB ROLE?

I don't think there has been anything on the course that I haven't ended up putting into practice in industry. Some aspects of prosthetics that I

didn't imagine I would need to know were the sole reasons I managed to secure a couple of jobs, as I had the capability needed for that specific role. Everything I learnt across my three years at University Centre Leeds has been applied in industry at some stage.
