Something for Everyone…

s the days and nights get cooler, and the preamble to the busy holiday season unfolds, it seems we are all full of energy to get out and enjoy the nice temperatures and excitement in the air. Fall is my favorite time of the year. The calendar starts to get full of those obligatory events rather quickly, but I hope you’ve left some room to fill in some relaxing time with your family, or a night out with some good friends. This month’s issue of Austin Faith & Family includes events you won’t want to miss, as well as articles full of useful information. You may want to attend a concert by The Singing Women of Texas, participate in the Buddy Walk (sponsored by DSACT) and attend a fall festival, as suggested in the “Do You Boo” article. While you’re relaxing, take time to check out all of the activities listed on our monthly calendar. Plan now to attend the In the City, For the City event coming up next month, hosted by ABBA. Whether you’re trying to pull together a cute fall outfit, striving to be a better husband, or just looking for something to do with friends, you’ll find all sorts of ideas in our magazine. We hope you are inspired and encouraged, as you read of Kristin Armstrong’s story about sustaining faith. We believe our magazine has a little something in it for everyone, so please share your copy with a friend.

Dear Lee and Marcy, Good morning! …I so enjoy your magazine! (August edition) It is so rare these days to find a Faith based magazine in the public arena! –––Susan M. Greetings to ya'll at AF&F, My name is Martin. I enjoyed finding your inspirational publication! (August edition) It is enlightening and certainly Austintatious! –––Martin F. Dear AFF, I felt connected as I read the August edition of the AFF, especially the letter to the Koke’s and the blurb about Celebration. (September edition) My daughter schooled with the Koke’s (even this previous year). So very sad….And, we’ve recently been moved by God to Celebration after almost 20 years at another. With that stated, again—it made me feel connected. I like what your magazine represents. –––Debby S.

Cardio exercise is one major key to optimal health in your life. calories you eat, your fitness level, your metabolism, how hard you exercise and how much body fat percentage you have. If you are just starting out, try just 15 to 20 minutes 3 times per week. As the weeks go by, add time to each work out and then start adding another workout in the week. As you start to get into shape, try a higher intensity workout to burn more calories and change things up.

C

ardio is any type of exercise that increases your heart rate so you can burn fat and calories. There are many types of cardio exercise and different levels as well. Let’s look at two main levels. Slow and steady cardio is great for burning fat and calories. This lower pace of exercise should last 45 minutes to one hour. It helps you burn fat because you are in the lower fat burning zone of an average of 70% of your maximum heart rate. This type of exercise includes walking, moderate biking, elliptical machine, jogging, swimming and step or low impact aerobics. High intensity cardio is another great tool for weight loss and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. High intensity is harder work for shorter periods of time as well, as interval workouts. This helps you burn tons of calories and boosts your metabolism for the rest of the day or night. These workouts include jumping rope, sprinting and spin cycling.

How do you decide what exercise is best for you? There is no “best” answer. It is the exercise that works best for your body and for your lifestyle and also whatever you enjoy the most. Another great way to make exercise more enjoyable is to break up your workouts. When you are at the gym, you can break your cardio into 10 minute segments between the different cardio machines, but don’t let your heart rate drop too low as you transition. On the days you weight train, do 10 minutes of cardio, then weights off and on, and your workout will go by much faster. It is also great to try new things. Shocking your body by switching up your routine is great for weight loss and avoiding the plateau we all seem to hit sooner or later. The bottom line is that everyone needs cardio exercise to live a healthy lifestyle, along with strength training and a good healthy diet. So pull out your day timer or open that app on your phone and start putting cardio workouts into your week. Once you get a routine down, you’ll be glad you did!

Lauren Lacy | Fitness Coordinator How much cardio do you need? The CHASCO Family YMCA answer varies from person to person. You need to figure in the following: how many

T

o love a child is one of the greatest rewards a parent or guardian can experience. We as parents/guardians will do just about anything to protect our children and guide them in the right direction. As our children develop, we see a constant expansion of their curiosity and desire to become independent. The old cliché that “children are like sponges” truly does apply. They watch us plug in the vacuum cleaner. They learn how to turn the doorknob. During bath time, they see us turn on and off the water. When we reach for the Windex and other chemicals under the sink, they are watching. With our hectic schedules of today, these are afterthoughts to most of us. If your child has ever been injured before, you know the feeling of helplessness and you wish you could trade places with them. There will be many bumps and bruises along the way, but there are many small things you can do in the household to help prevent and minimize serious injuries. • Each year more than 4.5 million children are treated in emergency rooms for injuries incurred in the home (9 out of 10 of these were avoidable)**

• Nearly 120,000 children are permanently disabled annually. • Taking preventative measures and closely supervising your child can help protect them from most household hazards. Our child safety consultants will do a detailed and thorough evaluation of your entire home. During a room-byroom walk through, we will identify potential hazards that may cause injuries or accidents to your child, and recommend useful solutions and products to help prevent any accidents or injuries. At the end of the consultation you will receive your personalized list of childproofing measures for your home and a detailed estimate for products and installation. We offer a complete range of highquality child safety products designed to help prevent common household accidents. Our safety consultants will save you hours of shopping and searching for the recommended safety products needed for your home. The products we recommend and install are products that are sturdy, reliable, and effective! Child safety products are only effective when they are properly installed. We offer professional installation services that are reliable, punctual, and we clean up after each installation. Although your home can not be 100% accident free, childproofing your home is the best way to reduce the risk of unnecessary injuries and accidents. MANHOOD: A Real Man is First and Always the Servant!

L

ook at a Marine Corps Officer! He is the one who orders the chow for the troops. A Marine Officer always eats last! If he orders too little chow- then HE is the man that goes hungry—not the troops that are dependent upon him in the first place! How or why is that any different for the man of the house? The man is to feed his family before he eats.

God, made a woman in such a special and unique way that not many men understand or get! God made it so no man—and I mean, NO man can ever “out love” a woman! Once the man goes first and puts the woman up on that pedestal and flat out loves her to the exclusion of any other woman on the

face of the earth, he discovers just a little—and that woman returns something magic and wonderful! The more love than a man knows what to secret is released for that special man! do with! All of us want to be loved--- period! Next month we’ll look at the concept I have finally learned that when I want to of love. be loved just a little bit more, all I have to Don Spann do is turn up my “love button” even

The man of the house is supposed to be the provider for the family! He is the guy that cuts the logs to build the house. He is the guy that makes sure the roof does not leak, that there is wood for the cooking of food, and provides a warm fire! He is the last one to bed down because he is making sure the house is safe for sleeping, before he goes to bed. He is the one that is supposed to get up at the crack of dawn with the mule, chain, and axe, pulling stumps out of the ground so he can plant some corn for the family to have food in the winter months, when the ground is dormant. Fortunately, we don’t have to cut the logs to build our homes anymore unless we’re Grizzly Adams, but our role in our suburban paradise is still the same. Man is told to be a SERVANT! When a man decides that he is going to devote himself faithfully to one woman and love her with all that he is, that woman soon figures out she can actually trust that man. When a woman meets a man she has to wonder…is this man going to be a control freak? Is he going to become addicted to drink or drugs? Is he going to be verbally abusive? Is he the kind of man that will actually hit a woman? Will this man actually love the children he fathers, and will he become a devoted father or not? The woman, I contend, takes a far larger risk with a man than does the man with a woman. When a man realizes that his real role is that of being a true man-servant, he feels something wonderful, way down deep. The man feels actual joy, and is not always able to find the words to express how good he feels about his commitment to that woman or to the entire family. When the woman finally realizes that she has a true man-servant loving her and her children, something wondrous and marvelous takes place inside her, and “the secret” God gave man appears on the scene. You see,

SPECIAL FEATURE Texas Work From Home Moms: A place for busy moms to find the information they need for home-based employment

K

risOrrownsanewlylaunchedwebsiteat www.texasworkfromhomemoms.com. The website focuses on moms (and dads) who want and need a better balanced home/work family environment. Kris has been a work-at-home mom for several years. Kris states, “I was at a point in my life where my kids were nearing the age of starting school. I knew I needed to help with income, but I wanted to be able to be there for my two boys after school, and to be there for them on those inevitable sick days that come about, without any hassle.” Like so many other moms in her situation, Kris started searching the internet. It literally took her hours to weed through what was legitimate and what wasn’t. Kris commented, “If you are new to the process, I can see how it would be easy to get caught up in all the things you see on the web that aren’t technically real employment.” Kris found a job with a company that looked like it might be something that would work for her, a customer service rep for a call center headquartered in Colorado. She applied and was hired a week later. It fit in great with her schedule, because she still had a four-year old at home. She was able to work nights, four nights a week, when her husband was home from his job. She was paid hourly and considered a part-time employee, answering telephone calls for her employer’s clients. “That was my first job as a virtual employee and I didn’t look back. I have since worked for two others,” states Kris. She soon realized the benefit of being available to her family and their needs, while contributing an income. Kris soon discovered that there are hundreds of companies out there that hire employees to work from home and started compiling a database of those companies for her own use. She soon came upon the idea of expanding her database and creating her own website to help others looking for virtual employment with legitimate employers. Kris states, “Texasworkfromhomemoms is a comprehensive list of national and local companies for moms who may find themselves in my same situation.”

www.AustinFaithandFamily.com

Kris states that there is a benefit to working from home for everyone involved. For employers there is less overhead and employees save money on gasoline, wardrobe and money for eating out during lunch, as well as bigger costs such as day care. Employers can post job openings free on the site, and the list is categorized by job type. There is everything from accounting and data entry to customer service reps, health care and sales, with more in between. Texasworkfromhomemoms is a membership-based website with a subscription fee of $15.99 for six months. Kris states, “My members have unlimited access to my database and my job is to continue to find and research companies to add to the list.” Her goal is to eventually reach out to local companies that have downsized their office space or decreased their employee base, and open them up to the idea that there are so many wonderful moms out there who would do a great job for them while working at home. What you will not find at www.texasworkfromhomemoms.com are MLM’s, get-rich-quick schemes or companies that charge you an upfront fee for employment. What you will find on this website is a database thus far, of over 425 companies. To contact Kris Orr at Texas Work From Home Moms, please call (512) 731-9551 or visit their website www.texasworkfromhomemoms.com.

Fabulous Fall

hen fall finally arrives in Central Texas, it’s especially refreshing because of our long, hot summers, and we look forward to wearing the rich colors, the scarves, the sweaters, etc. However, purchasing a new wardrobe can be expensive and time-consuming. Listed below are 10 ways to take those summer wardrobe items right into the new season, adding a touch here and there, to make our outfits take on a whole new look. We hope you discover some fresh ideas and have yourself a fabulous fall wardrobe for the cool days ahead…

sweater and a skinny belt. Try tying the belt instead of buckling it. 4. Tank top – A spaghetti-strapped tank top looks great peeking out from under a jacket. Add a cool necklace and you have a sophisticated look for work!

5

5. White cotton, button-up shirt – Just wear a v-neck sweater over the blouse, allowing the collar to be visible from the neck. This gives a crisp new look, with a bit of warmth for the cooler days, and looks nice paired with jeans.

6

6. Empire waist tube top – Why stop layering with two shirts? As the days get cooler, layer a dark shirt, then the tube top, with a long sweater vest as a third layer, to round out the look of three rich vibrant colors. It’s warm, it’s cool, and it’s hot!

1. Short-sleeved tshirts – Layer any of your tees from summer over a long-sleeved shirt; add a scarf and you’re good-to-go.

7

2. Long, sleeveless top – These flowing tops that were worn in the summer alone, take on a whole new identity when adding a cardigan, a belt, and leggings to complete the look. The shirt is hardly recognizable as a staple from your summer wardrobe, as it now becomes the backdrop for a unique outfit, pulled together with a long scarf. 3. Sundress – Pictured here is a gray knit, spaghetti-strapped sundress with a black

7. Skinny belt – Instead of just wearing a cardigan or sweater and buttoning it up, try leaving it open and add a skinny belt just above the waist. If your sweater and shirt are dark in color, trying adding a bright colored belt from your summer wardrobe to make the outfit “pop”. 8. Maxi dress – Don’t put away those long beach dresses just yet! Dust off your jean jacket and add a scarf to match one of the colors in the dress, add closed-in flats and you’re good to go.

9

Vest – This cute piece, worn with shortsleeved tops in the summer, can easily transition to the fall wardrobe. Just lengthen the sleeve of the top worn underneath, leave the vest unbuttoned and add a long necklace.

10

10. Dress – Just about any summer dress can be taken into fall by just adding a sweater in a solid color over the top of the dress, cinched at the waist with a belt. If there are sleeves on the dress, they look cute from under a sleeveless sweater. If the dress is sleeveless, opt for a sweater with sleeves. The bottom half of the dress appears to look like a skirt, with an entire new look.

Get with your friends and have a clothes swap, gleaning ideas from their creativity, and adding a new piece or two to your existing stash of clothes. If you have items that are in good condition, you can also bag them up and donate to a local charity near you. While you’re cleaning out your closet, making room for the new and discarding the old, take inventory of old attitudes, and exchange them for new ones as well. It’s a fabulous fall ahead and new looks just require a bit of adjustment, an accessory or two, and colors galore… Marcy Lytle

I

t’s official! Vacations are good for your health. So say the reports in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. You might respond, “I knew that already.” Ah, but now there is research* to back it up, and lots of it. Cruising is best with friends, family or with just one significant other. So, grab your bathing suit, fetch your passport and tell your boss you are heading out on a cruise— doctor’s orders! • Cruise for your heart: “An annual vacation can cut a person’s risk of heart attack by 50%.” o Rx: A 7-12 day cruise--to Alaska, The Bahamas, the Caribbean, Mexico, Europe, Hawaii, or South Pacific is just the ticket. Spa, rest, service that spoils you and incredible destinations are the thing for whatever ails you. (Not to forget 24 hour room service). • Cruise to de-stress: “Blood pressure, heart rate and levels of epinephrine (stress hormone) decline on vacations of only two days or more.” o Rx: Even 2-5 day sailings are out there from all over the U.S. From Galveston, there are 4 & 5 day sailings that take you away from it all as you sample entertainment, top cuisine and plenty of relaxation.

• Plan a cruise–for an attitude adjustment: “Even the anticipation of vacation travel generates an increase in positive feelings about one’s life as a whole, plus family, economic situation and health. “ o Rx: Start by planning when you want to go or where your perfect destinations will be.

• Cruise for your brain: “Travelers experience a 25%-50% increase in performance on vigilance tests after returning from vacation.”

It took working in the Christian nonprofit industry for me to realize there was, indeed, a controversy about trick-or-treating. Although I came from a Christian family, I never was taught to believe that Halloween was anything but fun and games. In my adult years, however, I have been introduced to the other side of that argument, one that says Halloween is not to be celebrated.

Still, if you have young children, it’s difficult to get around the onslaught of commercialized pressure to decorate, dress up and go all out for this particular holiday. What is a well-meaning Christian parent to do when little Suzy, tears in her eyes, wants to know if she can go trick-ortreating with her new friends from school? Aside from the religious leanings, any parent gives pause to sending their children door to door to take candy from strangers these days. Gone is the pleasant Leave-It-To-Beaver era when good clean fun could be had without fear of child abduction. Thankfully, the church-going world and other communities have understood these issues and risen to the challenge, offering other alternatives.

Determine who you will invite to join you. Will it be a family trip for all generations, a Girls Just Wanna Have Fun venture, or a romantic escape? Call a professional to assist you. The only item you will have left after that will be to countdown the days…… There is a big world out there that God created for all to experience. A cruise is a wonderful way to see particular areas and determine if they will be on your list to return to some day. Take this prescription of R&R to get your health cruising in the right direction. Debby Stevens

• Cruise to refresh: “Recuperation and improvement in exhaustion are facilitated by free time and warmer/sunnier vacation locations.” o Rx: An escape to the beaches of the Caribbean, Mexico or The Bahamas gets you back in the groove. Add a few days of just floating at sea, simply hanging out at the pool, OR taking part in the many onboard activities, and exhaustion becomes a thing of the past.

o Rx: Stimulate those brain cells with some serious thinking at the blackjack table in the casino, or while reading a great book in a deck chair. Also, take in fantastic ports of call in history & nature, in Europe, Asia and So. America, to gain much knowledge to share.

Goblins and Skeletons and Vampires, Oh, My! In our household, my 5-year-old knows there are certain things he is not allowed to even consider as costume alternatives around Halloween. For instance, any serial killer, demon, monster or otherwise evil-induced figure is out of the question. So far, that’s worked. I wonder, however, if this will hold water as he morphs into a pre-teen. Still, he understands that his parents have certain feelings about these things and that there are boundaries, if he wants to participate in trick-or-treating. Other friends of mine have taken this even further. They allow their children to dress as biblical or historical characters but nothing else. What’s cool about this method is their children not only are to dress the part, but know something about the character. This way, it’s not just for fun, but also a fun way to learn about and appreciate someone of value. If you are on the fence about the whole dress-up issue, then this may be a good alternative for you. Boo-er Beware With recent child abduction cases reminding us how quickly our children can be plucked from our lives, more people have become extra vigilant about providing safe trick-or-treating alternatives. Cities like Round Rock, Georgetown and Cedar Park provide fun-filled events usually at parks or on the downtown square where children can safely trick-or-treat. Churches have even begun sponsoring trunk-or-treat events where parents park their vehicles in a large circle and pop the trunk, which acts as a front porch. Families have been known to decorate with lights, fog machines and jack-o-lanterns to make it that much more festive. This allows children the freedom to wander from car to car under the watchful loving eyes of trusted adults. Aside from that, churches also often provide fall festivals where, among a carnival-like atmosphere, children can collect candy while meeting some very kind, fun, Christian folks. The best part is that you don’t even have to be a member of the church to enjoy this offering. If you are church shopping, this may be a fun way to get to know a potential church family. Two birds, one stone and candy to boot! Bah Humbug! Okay, so let’s say you are just not that into Halloween, and you refuse for your family to participate. That is certainly your right and privilege, but you may want to think about how to approach your neighborhood, as you don’t want to become known as the suburban scrooge. You may consider placing a large bowl of candy on your front step with a sign telling passersby to take some for their treat bag. You are not participating in the festivities, but that’s no reason to deny a hard-walking 4-year-old a Hershey’s bar, now, is it? Good, Clean Fun These days, it’s pretty hard to come by good, clean fun. Personally, I like Halloween because it’s sort of the unofficial launch of fall. However, I respect those who have a different perspective. Whatever you decide to do this season, remember to enjoy the sound of a child’s laughter in the air that so often accompanies this holiday. That’s treat enough for anybody.

Why use a REALTOR ?

H

aving lived in the Austin area since

1995, I feel I know a lot about the city and surrounding suburbs. However, I continue to learn every day, since the real estate landscape is constantly changing. It is a landscape of new developments, new builders, new lending requirements and new building trends. Never mind all the paperwork, which can include mandatory energy efficiency audits (if you live in Austin), seller’s disclosures, foundation problems (in certain areas thanks to our current drought) and short sale/foreclosure properties.

Navigating these waters can be treacherous and intimidating at times, so it makes good sense to have a professional on your side. Should you decide to use a REALTOR® to help with your home sale or purchase, it is in your

There is a difference between a REALTOR® and a real estate agent. A REALTOR® is a member of the National Association of REALTORS® and takes great pride in adhering to a strict code of ethics. The Code of Ethics establishes a standard of behavioral expectations that exceeds legal requirements, ensuring REALTORS® honor and respect of clients' interests. Do your due diligence by asking friends and family for names of agents they worked with and interview them to make sure they are a good fit for you. Just because they were a good fit for Uncle Joe, doesn’t make them a good fit for you. It also helps to look for REALTORS® who have continued their education and have accreditation in particular areas. educated about the market, we also have resources available to us that are of great value to buyers and sellers alike. By law, Texas is a nondisclosure state. This means that real property sales prices are not public record. Those friendly on-line websites are “guesstimating” on the value of the home and this is usually based on tax records. Tax values can be inaccurate and may not correlate to market value. You also have no way of knowing if concessions were made between the seller and the buyer for repairs, closing costs or other items. There is also a difference between a Seller’s Agent (or Listing Agent) and a Buyer’s Agent. A Seller’s agent works for the seller and their fiduciary duty is to the seller. That’s why it may not be in your best interest as a buyer to call the agent who has the home listed. A Buyer’s agent works for the buyer and their fiduciary duty is to the buyer. In most instances, the seller pays the buyer’s agent fees as part of the transaction expense.

SPECIAL FEATURE ABBA: Austin Bridge Builders Alliance

A

ustin is often referred to as a beautiful city, a great place to live, the live music capital of the world, etc. Many of us only know Austin by the neighborhoods, in which we live, work and play. However, Austin has many neighborhoods and people in need of support and aid, so that these areas and individuals can experience the “peace and prosperity” available to them. ABBA (Austin Bridge Builders Alliance) believes it is their responsibility, and the responsibility of those who partner with them, to assist in bringing this about. ABBA focuses on four critical areas: Education, Housing, Health and the Spiritual Needs of all people. The Executive Director of ABBA, Alan Nagel, states the mission of ABBA like this, “To connect the greater Austin Church Community and its resources to the needs of the city and region.” The entire staff of ABBA believes that as followers of Christ, we are to love and serve the people of Austin, uniting in one purpose, that every man, woman and child can see and hear God’s love and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. ABBA’s website, www.abbaconnect.net is a great place to get started - offering time by volunteering, giving of talents and ingenuity, or by donating funds where they are needed. ABBA publishes a monthly EMagazine, full of articles and information that will encourage you, enlighten you and stir within you the desire to serve. You are invited to join Friends of ABBA and become part of the

solution to many of the needs in Central Texas, by offering your resources in your area of blessing or expertise. ABBA believes that when the body of Christ unites behind a compelling vision, this unification of purpose becomes the largest force for good, and for change, in the entire city. ABBA is hosting an event next month, November 15, 4:00 – 8:30 p.m. at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, called In the City, for the City, where churches, businesses, ministries, non-profits, students, and everyday people can connect, communicate, and collaborate toward making a greater impact in our community. Last year, over 2000 people attended In the City, for the City and found ways to make a difference in their communities, and were able to speak directly to over 150 leaders who presented exhibits. Event Chair, Janie Fountain, believes that “Community service offers great opportunities to communicate about Jesus Christ.” She adds, “This year, people will be able to hear from marketplace leaders, who are not just building their businesses, but are using their businesses to reach out to their communities in extraordinary ways.” Immediately following In the City, for the City, a city-wide Youth Rally will kick off just across the street from the Bob Bullock Museum. Everyone, of all ages, is invited to come celebrate God’s heart for the people of Austin. For more information, go to www.abbaconnect.net. Marcy Lytle

he Singing Women of Central Texas exists for the purposes of glorifying God in music, proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ, providing an opportunity for Christian growth, inspiration, fellowship, mission and service, and to encourage musical excellence in the local church. These women provide concerts consisting of classical, spirituals and praise music. SWOCT performs one concert a month from September to May. There are currently seven chapters of SWOT (Singing Women of Texas) across the state. In 2007, Linda Bradley, then a member of the Singing Women of South Texas, had a dream of being able to offer the women of Central Texas the opportunity to enjoy this great musical experience. Linda and two friends from the South Texas Chapter (Fran Dumas and Sylvia Goree of Round Rock and Georgetown) began praying about

However, churches that invite them to sing provide the opportunity for their congregations to give a love offering to go towards music and other related organizational expenses. The women are also involved annually in a mission trip or joint concert with the other SWOT groups to share the message of Christ in venues such as the Baptist General Convention of Texas, Baptist Church Music Conference and the Alleluia Church Music Conference. Reverend Neal Terwilliger of First Baptist Church in Taylor, Texas had this to say to other church staff about a recent concert, “If you have never had the pleasure of hosting/attending a Singing Women of Texas concert I would highly recommend them to you. he Daniel & Justin Show, which airs on Sunday evenings 8-10 p.m. on The Word (99.3 FM), is off and running. Daniel & Justin are youth leaders at New Hope Community Church in Round Rock, and will be writing a monthly article directed towards parents. As youth leaders, they work with teenagers, observing their behavior and listening to their conversations with their peers. The monthly articles they write will be their insight on things they think parents might like to know in order to “bridge” the gap between generations. We hope our readers find their comments informative and helpful…

Daniel: Kids who are “made” to come feel resentful, and kids who are not allowed to come because of being punished are missing great teaching on how to respect parents, how to deal with issues at school, spiritual warfare, prayer, etc. It’s all a support system they need.

Golf Tips From the Tour with J.L. Lewis

Confidence onfidence is a key ingredient in attaining success on and off the golf course. One can have the ability to succeed, but without confidence, success is hard to achieve. The definition of confidence is the “belief in oneself and one's powers or abilities .” Confidence can be faked, but is usually unmasked during times of extreme pressure or stress.

C

times during his career. On each occasion, he had the same expression on his face whether he made the shot or not. When asked about this, he replied that his facial expression was the same during visualization as it was when he actually took the final shot. Visualizations can become reality. A combination of visualization and physical practice must be perfected to perform successfully.

There are several ways to build and maintain confidence. The first ingredient is a good understanding of the fundamentals of golf and a strong practice routine with physical repetition until shots are automatic. The next key is visualization of the desired result. The last way is being able to face your fears and release emotional anxiety that causes stress and lack of confidence.

The final step to achieving your dreams is overcoming emotional anxiety that causes stress and less than optimal performance. When in competition, if you are having doubts or signs of nervousness, this is an indication that you are not focused on the present moment. Let go of the past shot or future desire and concentrate on executing the shot at hand. Those fears and anxieties can be overcome in a variety of ways. The first step is the desire to overcome and prevail, so that you can perform at your best. Seek assistance through spiritual practices, sports psychologists, or mental coaches. Determine which methods work best for you and commit to the desired outcome.

As you learn the fundamentals of a new task and begin to have some success, confidence increases until you masterfully execute the desired result with precision. A good understanding of the proper fundamentals along with an efficient practice routine creates repetitive success. Jack Nicklaus radiated confidence on and off the golf course throughout his career. Nicklaus practiced more from age ten to thirteen than most golfers do in their entire lives. Nicklaus also spoke about occupying his mind with only positive thoughts and pictures. As a part of his pre-shot routine he would visualize each shot in complete detail, including his swing, the ball flight, and the perfect result. He even visualized the sight and sound of the roaring of the fans. It’s no surprise that Nicklaus prevailed under pressure so many times in his career. Another great pressure player with tremendous confidence is Michael Jordan. He took the last shot of the game twenty-seven

18

To build confidence that persists under pressure you must be able to see the desired result in your mind with ease before it will come to pass in the physical world. Golf is an excellent parallel to everyday life. The visualizations practiced in order to be more successful on the golf course can be used the same way for any desired outcome. www.JLLewisGolfTips.com

RAVE REVIEWS MOVIES The Informant – Movie Review This movie stars Matt Damon as a bipolar FBI agent (based on a true story). The music, along with Matt Damon’s character thinking aloud, makes for an offbeat drama, a bit slow at times, but well worth watching. Matt Damon (30 pounds heavier for the role) draws us in to his busy mind and intrigues us with how his mind spins its web on those around him. (Rated R for language).

Continued from page 9 When asked about co-parenting, she had nothing but great things to say. “Lance works really hard on our relationship,” Kristin says. With so many divorces in our society, many times it is the children who suffer and don’t get the kind of attention they deserve. Fortunately, that is not the case with Lance and Kristin. With the effort they both make to keep a good relationship, something not done by many exspouses, co-parenting has been great. “Lance is a wonderful father and he has the kids every Thursday and every other weekend” Kristin told me. “He is very involved in their lives”. Through their relationship after the divorce, they both have had the opportunity to show their With characteristics in her book like kids an example of unconditional love. forgiveness, authenticity, generosity and truth, there are sure to be characteristics in the Unfinished Woman’s Guide to help any woman along their way to completion.

What are the other characteristics you’ll find in this new book? How about diligence, confidence and courage, the ones you would expect from an Armstrong, like Kristin. Lee Eddins

MUSIC Need to breathe – “The Outsiders” This rock quartet from South Carolina is fronted by Bear Rinehart, his brother Bo, and childhood friends, Joe and Seth, who comprise the rest of the band. With each project, they seem to carry a sense of small-town authenticity along with a sense of folk/pop-rock excellence, never straying from their roots while escalating. Evidence of this down-toearth spirit is portrayed in the lyrics of the title track, “The Outsiders”: “And through everything we’ve learned, we’ve finally come to terms. We’re the outsiders.” This theme, of being true to a place of humility and freedom, is prevalent throughout the album. Other highlights include the stomp-driven “Lay Em’ Down”. Lauren Turner

Her latest book is called Work in Progress: An Unfinished Woman’s Guide… She describes this book as a book about “the kind of woman who walks into a room and the energy shifts”. There is just something about some women who are so real and so comfy in their own skin that they just brighten the room. Kristin defines these characteristics simply as “grace”. In Work in Progress, Kristin explores what God has to say about being His kind of woman.

Christian Brothers will be holding their third annual Single Mom Oil Change. The city wide event will be held on October 10, 2009 at all area Christian Brothers Automotive stores. Last year, Christian Brothers Automotive put their faith to work and changed the oil of over 300 cars owned by single moms in our community. Volunteers from local area churches also came together and offered food and drinks to the moms, as well as washing their cars, cleaning them out and vacuuming them. All the techs that work at CBA who worked on that Saturday volunteered their time to come in and participate. Jason’s Deli, not in Round Rock, but the Arboretum location, provided food for the technicians who volunteered their time on Saturday. If you know a single mom who could use a free oil change and a little hug from the body of Christ, please tell them to reserve a spot by calling (512) 331–2244.
