Get away from seasonal crowds

with a road trip to the Upper Keys By Mandy Carter During the busy season of Florida, when everyone, from all across the country, wants to enjoy our weather, I have found the perfect spot to get away from the crowds but still soak up the Florida sun and activity. The Upper Florida Keys (from Key Largo to Matecumbe Key) is the perfect spot to escape for a few days of peace and fun while still getting to enjoy the cool breeze weather before the heat of summer hits us. Key Largo is just 18 miles south of Miami, so an easy drive to make from Southwest Florida. In addition to enjoying fresh seafood and relaxing at a cozy waterfront motel, here are five things to do on a trip to the upper keys: 1. Explore some remote islands and mangroves on a paddle board. Take advantage of the calm waters while catching an up close view of Florida wildlife. There are so many places in the Upper Keys to easily drop your board and paddle out all day. And if you don’t own a board you can easily rent them. 2. Feeding the tarpon at Robbie’s of Islamorada is a must. You can purchase a bucket of bait then head out to the dock to hand feed these

massive fish. 3. Learn some cool things about the advances in diving at the History of Diving Museum. From the wall of helmets from around the world to the massive deep diving suits, you will gain some new knowledge into the undersea world. 4. Take a peaceful stroll through the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary in Tavernier. This 7-acre refuge provides a home to a variety of injured birds. You have a chance to see hawks, owls, gulls, herons, spoonbills and more. It is open from sunrise to sunset and free to the public but donations help to continue their mission of rescuing and rehabilitating wild birds. 5. Go hiking, snorkeling, kayaking or even camping at the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo. This state park is known for its fantastic aquatic life in over 70 nautical square miles of the Atlantic Ocean. This is the location of the only living coral reef system in the continental United States. We all know about Key West, but don’t overlook the Upper Keys when trying to plan your next Florida road trip.

Safe Kids Day

Celebrate kids, prevent injuries, save lives Join the fun Saturday, April 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for Safe Kids Day at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Page Field, 4700 Terminal Road, Fort Myers. Lee Health, Safe Kids Southwest Florida Coalition and community sponsors will host Safe Kids Day as a way to educate parents and help children learn ways to protect themselves. Preventable injuries are the number one cause of children’s death in the United States. Millions more are injured in ways that can

54 - April 2019

affect them for a lifetime, says Sally Kreuscher, Safe Kids Coordinator at the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. “Many parents think they know about safety and they do, but there is always more to learn,” Kreuscher says. “For example, 80% of all car seats are installed incorrectly. Most people don’t know that.” At Safe Kids Southwest Florida, protecting children involves education, advocacy, training, and hands-on demonstrations. Safe Kids sup-

ports caregivers with evidence-based data and injury prevention strategies on a variety of topics. Safe Kids also provides resources and safety devices to families in need. For more information, contact Sally Kreuscher at 239-343-1699 or Sally.Kreuscher@LeeHealth.org. Or, go to www.Safekidsswfl.org. Text ‘LIFESAVER’ to 31996 to donate to Child Advocacy programs available at Golisano Children’s Hospital and your community.

Movies on the big screen Dumbo

Wonder Park

Circus owner Max Medici (Danny DeVito) enlists former star Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) and his children Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins) to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock in an already struggling circus. Vandevere (Michael Keaton), who recruits the peculiar pachyderm for his newest, largerthan-life entertainment venture, Dreamland. A young imaginative 10-year old girl named Cameron "June" (Brianna Denski) spent her childhood days constructing an amusement park filled with fantastical rides and inhabited by talking animals called Wonderland with her mother (Jennifer Garner) and her friends, but she lost her sense of imagination and wonder after her mother died and growing up, until she finds the real Wonderland in the woods.
