Cultural Park Theater

Summer Camp 2021 Cultural Park Theaterʼs Triple Threat Theatre Summer Camps are perfect for serious, aspiring performers, as well as for kids who just want a super-fun, creative outlet - a place to discover and gain solid skills that will serve them on stage and throughout life. To our campers and camper parents. While under the Covid 19 restrictions, Cultural Park has been working hard to explore the options for how to offer our campers a true summer theater camp experience and still stay safe in this time of social distancing. The health and safety of everyone in our camp community is always our highest priority. Like you, we have been watching the updated recommendations from local authorities as we prepare for the summer season. In addition to local experts, we are also keeping up-to-date on state-level decisions, and we are continually monitoring guidance and advice issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Camp Association (ACA). Based on guidelines that weʼve seen so far, we have decided to fully explore how to take the best parts of Cultural Parks Camps and provide them through a combination social distancing and the joy of a live production. We believe that this will be the best way for us to ensure that we can deliver a consistent experience for your children. Cultural Park is taking every precaution to help campers maintain social distance • Class size is limited to 35 students- Registration Starts April 1. • Campers Temperatures will be checked daily • Staff and Counselors will wear masks • Campers and parents dropping off children are requested to wear masks. • Campers will be broken down into three groups $300 for Each “The Littles” ages 7 to 9 “The Not so Littles” ages 10 to 12 Two-Week “The Teens” ages 13 to 15 Session • We divided the theater into three classrooms • Campers will be eating snacks and lunch in their class room instead of with the whole camp • No fast food lunches • Campers may not leave for lunch • Campers will stay in their classes at pick-up time • All campers will perform in the final show on Saturday at the end of their camp session. Help children manage their behavior

By Bernadette Quiñones In today’s world, parents have no choice but to work. Single parents with only one source of income often find it difficult to get that perfect balance between work and family. For all of us, so much must be done during the day that there never seems to be enough time for oneon-one interaction with your child or children. As a result, many parents are left wondering what to do when undesirable child behaviors crop up.

1. Your Relationship With Your Child Many times, there has not established a solid attachment between the parent and the child that is characterized primarily by positive regard, not having the foundation necessary from which to successfully manage behavior. Children do what their parents say primarily because they care what their parents think of them or how they feel about them. 2. Spending Time With Your Child You must spend time with your child on a regular basis that is not centered around behavioral problems, and this time should be used for play, conversation, and relationshipbuilding activities. The more loved and understood your child feels by you, the easier it will be to manage his or her behavior. Many times, this is ignored due to lack of funds. However, time is free. You can read a book, bake cookies, take a walk, ride a bike. Many things that just require time. 3. Developmental Knowledge Be sure that you know what your child can do depending on his or her age. Very often parents personalize their children's misbehavior as something they are "doing on purpose." Sometimes this is true, but more often the behavior is quite natural for the developmental age. Knowing this helps you look at behavior management more objectively and less reactively. 4. Set Clear Rules This may seem like a given, but it is very easy to find yourself in the position of waffling on rules you have set. Likewise, it is equally problematic if you do not state every part of the rule concisely. Do not lump a lot of rules 30 - April 2021

7. Repetition Repetition is an integral part of all learning and mastery. "If at first you don't succeed, try again." Decide how many times you will repeat a command before acting on it. It really should not be more than two or three times for the smaller child and less for the older child. You might start by giving a warning of what will happen if the rule is not followed, and then following through with your consequence after the warning is ignored.

together, especially for younger children. Make one very clear statement. The younger the child is, the more exact the wording must be. 5. Positive Reinforcement Use positive reinforcement whenever possible. This is most helpful when a child successfully behaves in the way you have prescribed. Be careful, however, not to use material inducements for good behavior (such as buying new toys, etc.). Reinforcements should be centered around feelings of self-esteem, accomplishment, and cooperation. Do something with your child such as play a game, go to the park, or simply give verbal praise and appreciation. 6. Providing Consequences For rules that do not seem to be followed using positive reinforcement, the parent must establish consequences for failure to comply. These must be realistic, match the nature of the infraction, and teach something if possible. Further, they must be consistently enforced. Start with small, time-limited consequences, and then slowly increase the time or intensity of the consequence for repeating the same infractions. When you can, use natural consequences. An example would be having your child work to earn the money to replace something he or she has destroyed.

8. Consistency This is another given, but perhaps the most difficult to facilitate. Consistency in rules and consistency in following through with consequences are both extremely important. Children naturally look for loopholes such as trying your patience when you are tired, but these are the times consistency is most important and effective. 9. Parental Accord If two parents are involved, they must be in accord with what the rules are, what the consequences are, and what the procedures are for carrying out these consequences. Never let a child restate what the other parent has said without first checking to be sure of the accuracy of the statements, and be sure that you and your partner are in complete agreement with rules before trying to enforce them. 10. Model Good Behavior As always, who you are and how you act is the most potent guide and teacher for your child. Treat him/her with respect in all situations, and strive to manage his/her behavior with a calm attitude that comes from your understanding that self-control is ultimately necessary and good for your child Bernadette Quiñones is a Provider Enrollment Coordinator with the Early Learning Coalition of Southwest Florida. Meet Myles - Children’s Miracle Network Champion Myles smiles because of you. Today he’s a happy and healthy one year old, something that didn’t always seem possible. Myles has a lot to smile about thanks to the lifesaving care he has received since birth at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida and the continued care from his team of pediatric specialists. Myles struggled just to make it into this world and has overcome incredible odds. “I knew there would be challenges,” says mom, Maddie Levy. “He’s a fighter.” In his first 12 months Myles has seen many of the doctors and specialists at Golisano including his cardiologist, pulmonologist, endocrinologist, nephrologist and ophthomologist just to name a few. Most recently Myles had a sleep study involving an overnight stay at Golisano looking for an incidence of obstructive sleep apnea, which is common in Down Syndrome children. In the same week, Myles visited Golisano for outpatient labs to check for anemia. Despite all these regular visits, mom isn’t discouraged and says the team at Golisano always has her back. “They make it all possible. They build the roadmap. When it comes to Myles, I know the only limits placed on him will be those placed

by others,” said Levy. “He has not stopped breaking through the stereotypes since birth and is reaching all kinds of ‘Mylestones’.” Mom’s term of ‘Mylestones’ is exactly why this little fighter is being named the 2021 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN) Champion for Golisano. Myles and his family have seen all parts of the hospital and represent so many of it’s unique specialities that are focused on helping kids grow up healthy and strong. Myles meets the CMN motto of “Change Kids’ Health,

Change the Future.” Myles’ care focuses a lot right now on physical, occupational and speech therapy at The Children's Rehabilitation Center at Golisano Children's Hospital. “This has been such an enriching experience for us,” says Levy. “The therapists are so kind and knowledgeable. They only want what is best for Myles.” Levy says the care goes beyond just her growing baby and says the team at Golisano has taught her a lot about being a first time mom and helped her with balancing life, not just the therapies and medicine. “They are there for both of us, it’s comforting.” “He works super hard in therapy,” said Maddie. “Right now, he’s in swimming lessons too, he loves it and doesn’t give up!” Myles will be featured in local CMN campaigns for Golisano throughout the year at Costco, Dairy Queen, iHop, Panda Express, Publix, Ace Hardware, Wal-Mart and more. “We are so honored to be able to help share our story and help this incredible hospital. We love Golisano and the entire team that works with Myles. They truly put children and families first,” said Levy.
