Orlando has unique attractions in addition to the theme parks
By Mandy Carter
When most people think about Orlando, they think theme parks. But I recently took a four-day road trip to Central Florida and never stepped foot inside one of the mega theme parks. This action-packed vacation was filled with unique fun that we all enjoyed. Check out my top eight must do's on your next Orlando vacation. 1. Test your family's teamwork skills at The Escape Game Orlando. This location offers a variety of escape room levels that are good for all ages. We tackled “The Playground” and with a little assistance, the kids are proud to say we ESCAPED! 2. Release some creative energy at the Crayola Experience. Kids can easily spend several hours embracing the world of color through a variety of art focused activity mixed with some indoor playground fun. 3. Get an inside view of all kinds of animals at Skeletons Museum from birds, bats and reptiles to sharks, elephants and humans. 4. Experience mysterious exhibits at Wonder Works from feeling the
force of hurricane winds, to riding a roller coaster simulator. 5. Learn about underwater environments at SEALIFE. This is a perfect sized aquarium to keep the little ones attention through all exhibits. 6. Mingle with celebrities at Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum, including superhero celebs like Wonder Woman and Aquaman. 7. Get a high, relaxing scenic view of Orlando from The Wheel at Icon Park. This 360 air conditioned ferris wheel style ride is great to take day or night for capturing a unique perspective of the city. 8. Embrace your inner bravery by taking a ride on the world's highest swings, the Star Flyer. And if you still need some Disney Magic mixed in to the trip, go grab a nice dinner at George Wine Bar at Disney Springs followed by a have a fun night of silly gift store shopping! As you can see, there is no shortage of attractions in Orlando. So plan a unique family vacation with a roadtrip to Central Florida and make sure to check out these eight family-friendly spots. Look out for next month’s column about my family’s favorite budget-friendly themed hotel.

Compass Pediatric Rehab Wellness Program, launched last February, teaches kids how to live healthier lives. A fall program will be launching soon.
Kids’ rehab & wellness program scores big with local community
By Clay Luz Consider the success of the Compass Pediatric Rehabilitation Wellness Program like a midfield soccer kick lofted into the back of the net. As World Cup announcer Andres Cantor would exclaim (for at least 15 seconds, probably longer): “GGGOOOAAALLL!” After all, Christine Martin got the idea for the wellness program on a soccer field. She volunteers as a trainer with the Cape Coral Soccer Association (CSSA) and U.S. Youth Soccer TOPSoccer, two non-profit, educational organizations that give local kids the chance to play soccer. Martin’s also a licensed physical therapist (PT) with Pediatric Orthopedic Rehabilitation at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. Her PT expertise came in handy at Cape Coral’s Pelican Soccer complex one Saturday morning when Zackory Campagnolo came limping off the soccer field. Ms. Martin immediately assessed the 13-year-old and diagnosed him with a hip flexor strain. Campagnolo’s injury, which prevented him from running or engaging in other sports-related activities, required physical rehabilitation therapy. The two worked together twice a week in forty-five minute long sessions to reduce Mr. Campagnolo’s hip pain, increase flexibility, strengthen muscles, and improve his balance to prevent future injury. Six months later, Campagnolo returned full-strength to the soccer field. However, Martin thought that patients like him, after completing their rehabilitation, could benefit from a program that continued to emphasize their health and wellness beyond their physical therapy sessions, with the idea of avoiding injury again. 46 - August 2019
“Many middle-school kids don’t have access to wellness programs in our area because gyms tend to have age limits while others require that adults accompany the kids,” Martin explains. “As a result, some of these children don’t get the chance to learn about different exercises and how to safely perform them.” The program teaches kids aged 10-13 how to continue a healthy lifestyle and grow their wellness knowledge. “They explore healthy habits such as exercise, sleep, stress management, and nutrition in fun ways that include games, yoga, resistance equipment, and physical activities,” says Martin, who recruited five second-year students from the physical therapy program at Florida Gulf Coast University to help teach the program. Classes met for eight weeks at Pediatric Orthopedic Rehabilitation in Fort Myers. Because success breeds success, this fall Martin will open the Compass Pediatric Rehabilitation Wellness Program to the public. The program offers a pay-asyou-go payment plan for each session that also covers the cost of all equipment. A bundled payment plan offered also covers the entire eight-week program. Payment is required before sessions start. Call 239-343-7464 for more information or to register. Free autism screening for young children Aug. 16 Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will be held on Friday, Aug. 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the North Fort Myers Recreation Center, 2000 North Recreation Parkway. It is estimated that one in every 68 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder,
making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. A physician referral is not required. Appointments are not necessary, but parents are encouraged to call 239-343-6838 to schedule or obtain more information.

Package 2 is "Next Hoof Up.” This is an exciting 3-hour party with horse games and riding on the trails. Package 3 is "Best in Show.” A 5-hour unforgettable birthday! Horsin' around game, crazy craft time, and best of all take a trail ride through the forest. Working up an appetite? No problem, you get hot dogs and hamburgers. Don't stop now, let's cool off in the sprinklers or roast some smores over the fire.
