Bower, president & CEO of The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools. “With 75% of our students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, the need is very high in our school district and this supply drive helps to ensure that all students come to school prepared to learn.” For additional information on how you can get involved, contact Margo Brewster at (239) 337-0433 or email Margo@LeeSchoolFoundation.org.

Jell-o Creations
www.melskitchencafe.com
Jell-o Worms {Seriously Gross} www.justapinch.com
•6 oz Raspberry Jell-o •1 pkg unflavored gelatin •3/4 cup whipping cream •3 cups boiling water
•15 drops food coloring •100 flexible straws •Tall container (1 quart or 1 liter carton of milk)
Directions:
1. Combine gelatin in bowl and add boiling water. 2. Let it cool to lukewarm and then add the whipping cream and 15 drops food coloring. 3. Gather your straws (don’t forget to flex them out) and put them in the container. It’s important that the straws have a tight fit so the jello stays in the straws. For this reason, a 1 liter carton may be better; you will probably get longer worms since there is a tighter fit. If you have a bigger container, a rubber band around the straws is helpful. Or you could just add more straws to fill the container. 4. Add the gelatin mixture to the straw-filled container and let it set until firm. 5. There are multiple ways you can remove the worms from the straws. You can roll a rolling pin over the straws and squeeze them out or you can hold the straws over warm water. The worms will slip right out.
Rainbow Cherry Jigglers www.tablespoon.com
30 maraschino cherries 1 cup pineapple or orange juice 1 1/4 envelopes gelatin
2 cups white cranberry juice cocktail 2 1/2 envelopes gelatin Cake sprinkles for garnish, if desired
Directions: Implements: Two flexible silicone half-sphere molds (Half-Sphere .68 oz, 1.57 inch dia. x .79 inch deep, 15 cavities), a little spray cooking oil or vegetable oil, and paper towels. Prepare the molds by wiping the mold cavities with a paper towel moistened with a a little vegetable oil (or a quick spray of unflavored cooking oil spray will also work). Then, wipe the mold cavities with a clean paper towel. This will leave just the slightest residue, which will help unmold the gelatin without affecting the taste or appearance. Place each mold on a cookie sheet or cooling rack to provide a stable surface. Prepare cherries. Cut the very bottom end off each cherry. Place the cut cherries on a paper towel to drain. Prepare Opaque Layer. Place juice in a saucepan and sprinkle with the gelatin. Allow to soak for a minute or two. Heat over very low heat, stirring constantly, until dissolved (approximately 5 minutes). Remove from heat. Fill each mold cavity 1/3 full with the gelatin mixture. Refrigerate until fully set, 30 minutes to an hour. Prepare the Clear Layer. Place juice in a saucepan and sprinkle with the gelatin. Allow to soak for a minute or two. Heat over very low heat, stirring constantly, until dissolved (approximately 5 minutes). Remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly (about 15 minutes). When the mixture has cooled, and the Opaque Layer is set, remove the molds from the refrigerator. Place a cherry, cut side down, in each mold cavity. Using a tablespoon, carefully fill each mold cavity to the top with the reserved clear gelatin mixture. Return molds to the refrigerator, and chill for several hours (ideally overnight to allow the layers to fully bond). To serve, unmold. Immediately before serving, garnish with the cake sprinkles, if desired.

I'm A Shareholder Kit Why bother giving a kid a book they won t read? I'm A Shareholder is TOTALLY different! Awarded the NAPPA Honors in the Parent Resource category, it's colorful (full vivid colors), it's fun, and it's the ONLY kids book/kit meant to be coupled with owning stock. Did you know that the average high school senior scored a dismal 48% on financial literacy tests? Yep, that's out of 100! Studies show that the earlier you start teaching kids simple money management skills, the better. For the cost of a few cheeseburgers, you can help your boy or girl by getting the I'm A Shareholder Kit. It's an innovative way to teach kids about money and stocks. The kit includes a coupon for $10 OFF their 1st share of stock and a collector's card. Whether it is a single share of stock from GiveAshare.com or stock held in a brokerage account, this award-winning book along with the experiences that come with true stock ownership breaks through the clutter to teach kids about the stock market and managing money. Each mailing from THEIR company becomes a learning opportunity: a dividend check, an annual report, a gift to shareholders, or an invitation to a company's shareholder meeting. www.GiveAshare.com from $17

An included 24" diameter, 3'- high wheel spun at the beginning of each turn indicates which hand or foot players are to use and what color dot to touch. Contortions and human pretzel poses aside, no other part of the body may touch the playing surface; the last player to remain "standing" wins. A 1-hp air blower that keeps the playing surface inflated plugs into AC. Supports up to 1,500 lbs. 15' L x 15' W x 15" H. (125 lbs.) www.hammacher.com $2,000

Petting Zoo Edison & Ford Winter Estates 2350 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers 1 - 4 p.m.
The petting zoo has been such a hit with area children that Edison & Ford Winter Estates will have the animals back onsite at the end of the month. Kids will have the chance to pet a goat, duck, chicken, pig, sheep, calf and rabbit. This is a great learning experience for children that may not otherwise have exposure to farm animals. Thomas Edison had several animals at his winter estate. Like most working farms, he had dogs and cats, plus a cow, horse and many chickens. Reportedly, he drank a lot of milk so he purchased a cow in 1908. He used a horse to pull the lawn mower and for transportation into town. He also had a lot of chickens and sold the eggs at the nearby market. In 1917, Edison had more than 60 chickens living on the property. The petting zoo will be set up in the Heritage Gardens at the Garden Shoppe. Seating is available on the nearby covered museum porch that has ceiling fans. Parking is available in the main parking lot off McGregor Boulevard and along Larchmont Avenue. Cost is $1 per child. For additional information, call 239-334-7419.

Preparation and routines can help make the school year successful The first day of school is right around the corner, and that means more than just school supplies, homework and after-school activities. Parents also need to think about vaccinations, physicals, nutrition, routines and stress. “When it comes to vaccinations, there may be specific, required inoculations depending on the age and grade-level of the child,” says Piedade Silva, M.D., pediatrician. “So check with your pediatrician to make sure that your child is up to date on his or her vaccinations before school starts.” Annual physical exams are beneficial for children and parents, as they keep everyone informed and aware of any medical issues or changes. For those involved in high school sports, a sports physical is required before training begins. Dr. Silva reminds parents to bring their child and the appropriate forms to the pediatrician’s office before the start of the school year so the child does not fall behind in his or her training. As the school year resumes, Dr. Silva also encourages parents to

make sure children eat well-balanced meals. “The summer break may have led to unhealthy habits, and food plays such an important role in a student’s attention span,” she says. “Pack healthy lunches with fresh fruits, vegetables and water. Avoid juices, sodas and other sugary drinks. Choose healthy sources of protein, like lean meat, nuts and eggs; as well as whole-grain breads and cereals that are high in fiber.” Proper sleep habits also are vital for a successful school year. Transitioning back into a regular sleep routine should begin at least one week before school starts. Dr. Silva recommends going to bed about 30 minutes earlier every night, and setting an alarm and waking up about 30 minutes earlier in the morning than the summer schedule. “Kids get used to the lazy days of summer,” she says. “So the goal is to make a gradual transition—that way students are not falling asleep at school on their first day back.” During the days leading up to school, and throughout the school year, students may experience stress, which can be caused by a
number of pressures and worries. Dr. Silva recommends that parents keep the lines of communication open. “If you notice your child is stressed or seems intimidated or worried, talk to him or her and deal with any issues as soon as they come up,” she says. Additional back-to-school tips include: • Make sure the family gets the flu shot, which is generally available in mid-September. • Check to make sure that backpacks are not too heavy. Children should wear the backpack on both shoulders to evenly distribute the weight. If available, a child should use a locker. • Advise children not to share drinks or eating utensils, hats or hairbrushes. • Make sure children know how to wash hands with soap and water or a gel sanitizer, especially after using the bathroom and before eating. The new school year should be an exciting time. With planning, preparation and good routines, children will be ready for success.

Local moms invited to join the Big Latch On During the first week of August, thousands of breastfeeding women and their children will gather within their communities to join in the Global Big Latch On, an annual two-day event held in various locations around the world. The Global Big Latch On is organized each year during World Breastfeeding Week to raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding and the need for global support. Lee Memorial Health System invites mothers to take part in the Global Big Latch On events Friday, Aug. 5 at 10:30 a.m., at these three locations: Cape Coral Hospital – New Café HealthPark Medical Center – 4th Floor Atrium Healthy Life Center at Coconut Point Registration begins at 10 a.m. “The Global Big Latch On is a great opportunity to show support for breastfeeding,” explains Nancy Travis, RN, director, Women and Neonatal Services, Cape Coral Hospital. “Involving the community in a global event makes breastfeeding more accepted as part of everyday life and removes social barriers, which we hope will encourage and support mothers to continue as long as possible in order to maximize the benefits for both mom and child.”
The first Big Latch On took place in New Zealand in 2005, and has grown into a global event. The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months of life, then continued breastfeeding and appropriate complementary foods up to 2 years of age, or beyond, as mutually desired by the mother and child. Benefits of breastfeeding: • Breast milk provides all of the nutrients your baby needs for the first 6 months of life. • Breastfed babies have fewer allergies, stomach problems, and respiratory and ear infections. • Breast milk is free and convenient. You always have a supply and it is always the perfect temperature. • Breastfeeding is good for the environment—there is no trash to discard. • Moms who breastfeed have a lower risk of breast cancer For more about the Global Big Latch On, visit www.biglatchon.org or call Cape Coral Hospital at 239-424-2217; HealthPark Medical Center at 239343-5271; or the Healthy Life Center at 239-495-4475.
Include an eye exam in your child’s back to school plan
By Dr. Heather Trapheagen Undiagnosed and untreated vision problems are holding back millions of school kids just when learning and healthy development are the most important. Two-thirds of children do not receive preventative vision care before starting school. A pediatric eye exam differs from an adult eye exam, and even if the child does not know his or her letters, the visual system can still be assessed. Most eye doctor offices have special charts which include pictures or symbols for the younger children that cannot recognize their letters or
numbers. Since many vision problems occur at a young age, it is very important that children have their eyes checked on a regular basis. Generally, comprehensive exams by an eye doctor should occur yearly. Many times, vision screenings are done at the pediatrician’s office or the schools, but these screenings do not check the entire visual system or the complete eye health. If you have any questions regarding your child’s eyes or vision, please call to schedule an appointment with Dr. Heather Trapheagen at 573-EYES (3937). Most insurances are accepted.

For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliot. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliot seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.

City of Palms Youth Choirs form MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL
The Fort Myers Symphonic Mastersingers announced the initiation of The City of Palms Youth Choirs. The program will consist of two new choirs – high school and middle school - to be directed by Mastersingers assistant director Matt Koller. “In a climate where public school music and arts funding is decreasing the Mastersingers believe it is vital to create a program for young singers that will ensure the future of the choral art form.” said Tony Contino, Mastersingers Board president. The Mastersingers regularly collaborate with university and high school music departments to provide professional performing opportunities for young students. Now in their 16th season the Mastersingers expand their programming and community involvement with the creation of The Mastersingers City of Palms Youth Choir. The City of Palms Youth Choir will perform at their own concerts in addition to many of the adult Mastersinger performances. Koller has already received an invitation for the high school choir to perform at Lincoln Center in New York with renowned
choral director James Jordan and award-winning Welsh composer Paul Mealor in the spring. Auditions will take place in August with rehearsals beginning in September. Information regarding auditions and fees will be posted on the Mastersingers website, www.MastersingersFM.com. Matt Koller is a highly acclaimed choral and instrumental conductor and has led ensembles which have been praised with comments such as "the voices and diction were sheer perfection" and "as professional a student orchestra as I have had the pleasure to hear," by the Papermill Playhouse in Maplewood, N.J. Koller most recently was the choral director at Fort Myers High School. The Mastersingers, the premier choral ensemble in Southwest Florida, is a select ensemble of singers who enjoy a reputation of musical excellence and are dedicated to the performance of significant choral works by classical composers, as well as innovative programs. For more information, call 239-288-2535 or email at info@mastersingersfm.com.
