FAMILY NEWS
Short drive to Longboat Key offers unique, family fun By Mandy Carter Longboat Key is a beautiful beach town in Sarasota County along the central west coast of Florida. This area of Florida spans almost 11 miles and is known for having a private allure yet it is close to St. Armands Circle, so you are close to a variety of dining and shopping options. From Lee County, it only takes about 90 minutes to drive there, making it a perfect weekend getaway where you can enjoy a beautiful beach and enjoy some unique attractions. What to do: Tour The Ringling. This expansive attraction includes a number of places to visit and can easily take up to 4 hours to see it all. But the Circus Museum is the must see with kids! This unique museum experience allows families to discover the rich history, fun and fanfare of the American circus.
Explore Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium. Take a walk through this family friendly attraction and you will see sharks, seahorses, otters and more. Plus you will get an interactive experience at the touch tanks and daily feedings.
Walk the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. Need a break from the Florida sun then head to these gardens for a peaceful and shady walk through some inspiring gardens. The Children’s Garden offers a great space for imaginative play among nature. Where to stay: The Zota Beach Resort just opened in June and provides a gulf-front stay that feels secluded yet is near all of these attractions plus many more in Sarasota and Bradenton. The accommodations are spacious, both onsite restaurants offer kidfriendly options, the beach is great for even the youngest kids and there are beach games & toys available for the guests. Right now is the perfect time to book a family stay here because
they have a promotional code valid until Dec. 24. Just visit www.zotabeachresort.com, reserve a room and enter GRANDOPEN for 25% off posted rates. Mandy Carter is a Fort Myers mother of two. Getting back into the groove of school with a healthy and consistent routine
By Katie Lynch, Lee Health You have dealt with the mad dash to get your child ready to return to school. Now is the time to make sure your family is settling into a normal, healthy routine–a task that is often one of the most difficult transitions for both kids and parents between summer vacation and starting a new school year. If you have overlooked evaluating your child’s current health status, make an appointment. “Going back to school should coincide with checking in with your pediatrician for an annual well-child visit,” says Michelle Hoffman, M.D., a specialist in pediatric infectious diseases. “Updating vaccines is essential for all children, but especially those between the ages of 4-5 and 11-12.” You can visit www.flshotsusers.com (under the “Parents
40
AUGUST 2017
& Schools” tab) to find information about which shots are required for school/child care center entry and to participate in physical activities. It is also important to make sure your child is practicing healthy habits. “Teach them how to properly wash their hands or to use a gel-based hand sanitizer throughout the day to avoid getting sick and spreading germs,” Dr. Hoffman says. “Also, show them how they need to cover the mouth with an elbow or sleeve when coughing or sneezing. And remember, if your child has a fever, he or she should not return to school until 24 hours after they are fever free.” Talk to your child about how he or she is adjusting to a new grade and if he or she is worried or concerned about anything such as challenging school work, dealing with a bully, making friends, or getting along with a new teacher.
You can help your child succeed by making sure he or she:
• Goes to bed at a reasonable bedtime. The National Sleep Foundation recommends sleep for: • preschoolers (3-5 years old): 11 to 14 hours • school-aged children (6-13 years old): 9 to 11 hours • teenagers (14-17 years old): 8 to 10 hours of sleep • Eats a healthy breakfast every day for energy needed to excel in school. • Wears a backpack correctly (with the weight evenly distributed) and is carrying only the books he or she needs. To prevent injuries and strain, physicians recommend kids carry no more than 10-15 percent of their body weight. • Gets organized using a wall calendar or planner to record due dates, extracurricular activities and need-to-know information (phone numbers, locker combination, teachers’ names, class times, etc.).

Prepare your child for the new school year with an eye exam
By Dr. Heather Trapheagen Learning is all about vision: 80% of what a child learns in school is presented visually. Undiagnosed and untreated vision problems are holding back millions of school kids just when learning and healthy development are the most important. Two-thirds of children do not receive preventative vision care before starting school. A pediatric eye exam differs from an adult eye exam, and even if the child does not know his or her letters, the visual system can still be assessed. Most eye doctor offices have special charts which include pictures or symbols for the younger chil-
dren that cannot recognize their letters or numbers. Since many vision problems occur at a young age, it is very important that children have their eyes checked on a regular basis. Generally, comprehensive exams by an eye doctor should occur yearly. Many times, vision screenings are done at the pediatrician’s office or the schools, but these screenings do not check the entire visual system or the complete eye health. If you have any questions regarding your child’s eyes or vision, call to schedule an appointment with Dr. Heather Trapheagen at 573-EYES (3937). Many insurances are accepted.

Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

The Emoji Movie unlocks the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone. Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favorite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone’s user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression – except for Gene (T.J. Miller), an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions. Determined to become "normal" like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 (James Corden) and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak (Anna Faris). Together, they embark on an epic "app-venture" through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it’s deleted forever.
Surly Squirrel (Will Arnett) and the gang are back. We are once again in Oakton where the evil mayor has decided to bulldoze Liberty Park and build a dangerous amusement park in its place. Surly and his ragtag group of animal friends band together to save their home, defeat the mayor, and take back the park. Surly is a smart-aleck rodent who hasn’t quite gotten rid of his stubborn streak. When the nut shop blows up he wants nothing more than to go back to his former laid back lifestyle, except perhaps to prove Andie wrong. Whether it’s saving lives, solving problems or lending a helping hand, Andie is a constant source of support and a partner that Surly needs more often than he is willing to admit.Joining the voice of Will Arnett are actors Katherine Heigl as Andie, Maya Rudolph as Precious, Bobby Moynihan, Gabriel Iglesias, Jeff Dunham, Bobby Cannavale as Frankie, Isabela Moner, Sebastian Maniscalco, Peter Stormare, Jackie Chan as Mr. Feng.
