traditions
Family How is it December already? It sneaks up on me every year. Even though I never feel prepared enough for December, Christmas is my favorite holiday. It is even more fun with kids. In December, we always make time to visit Santa at the mall even if only one of our three kids will take a picture with him. Our Elf on a Shelf, Pixie, returns every year. We always enjoy checking out our local drive-thru Christmas light display. Occasionally, we find time to bake sugar cookies for Santa. Most of the time, he gets storebought sugar cookies. The kids always get to decorate them. It’s all about the frosting anyway, right? I’m always looking for new traditions to incorporate during the Christmas season. Here are a few ideas I found on Pinterest: 1. A family Christmas Eve box This box may include items such as a pair of Christmas pajamas for each child, a Christmas movie and popcorn. Throw in a
pair of pajamas for yourself. This would make a cute Christmas picture! 2. A candy cane hunt My kids love Easter egg hunts, so I know this will be a yearly request from them. 3. Hot chocolate bar Who doesn’t love hot chocolate? Don’t forget the whipped cream, marshmallows and chocolate syrup. 4. Wrap up Christmas books Wrap up 24 Christmas books to read until Christmas. These can be books you already own, new ones, or check out from the library. Every night, or whenever it is convenient for your family, have your kids unwrap a Christmas book to read each day as a family. I would love to hear about your family traditions during the Christmas season. Share them on my blog at www.leefamilynews.net Happy holidays!

Stay on track with healthy habits for kids this holiday season The holiday season is meant to be fun, but the joy can take a painful, even deadly turn, if children attempt to use toys that are not age-appropriate or develop bad habits. “One of the biggest things to think about is your child’s age,” says Lee Physician Group pediatrician Pierre Loredo, M.D. “Packages have warning labels with an age range, but you also have to take into consideration children with special needs—children who are autistic might need something more sensory that helps develop social skills, or something calming.” Young children can be at risk for suffocation or strangulation from strings, straps and cords; or for burns from caps guns or other flammable items. “Parents don’t think about it, but objects with sharp points or edges, things that make loud sounds or projectiles are things have the potential to harm,” Dr. Loredo says. Dr. Loredo suggests toys that develop motor skills

for young children. “A tricycle or bicycle is a great gift, but get a helmet, too,” he says. “Avoid something like a pet because that’s a lot of responsibility and many children are not ready for that.” Older children can benefit from intellectual toys, including electronic games and tablets that include memory games and ways to enhance learning. “Monitor what your children watch Dr. Pierre Loredo and how they are engaged with other people,” Dr. Loredo cautions. “You always want to know what they are doing online and who is communicating with them.”
Extended holiday breaks are a chance for children to spend more time in recreational activities and eat foods that are only available for a limited time. “It’s fine to indulge, but within reason,” Dr. Loredo says. “Talk to your children about making choices.” Special foods should be consumed in moderation. “Talk to your kids about choices and what to eat in smaller portions,” he says. “Also, I know kids want to stay up later, and that happens, but be sure to get back on a routine bed schedule several days before schools start.” The payoff is children and teens who head into the New Year with a positive attitude, ready to go back to school. The possible consequence is illness. Viral infections increase during the holiday season. “Hand-washing is critical,” Dr. Loredo says. “I recommend using soap and water when possible. Antibacterial wipes or gels fight bacteria but they will not kill a virus.”

Annual eye exam is important By Dr. Heather Trapheagen All children should have a full eye exam (not just a screening) by an eye doctor prior to kindergarten. The earlier vision loss is detected, the earlier treatment can be started. If vision loss goes undetected, amblyopia (“lazy eye”) may develop. Amblyopia is a functional vision loss, usually occurring in one eye. Functional vision loss means that the eye is healthy, but the image is blurred in one eye, so the brain chooses to ignore the blurry eye. Sometimes, this may cause an eye to turn in or turn out.
Vision therapy, including patching or eye exercises, along with eyeglasses may be necessary to improve the vision and/or eye turn and prevent permanent vision loss. If you see an eye that turns in or out, squinting, or excessive blinking, it may be another indicator that your child has a vision issue. If you have any questions regarding your child’s eyes, Full Spectrum Family Vision Care will happily answer your concerns. Call to schedule an appointment with Dr. Heather Trapheagen at 573-EYES (3937). Most insurances are accepted.

The annual success of the Lee Heart Walk is due in a major part to the support of the Heart Walk’s committed local sponsors, including Platform Sponsor Lee Memorial Health System; Presenting Sponsor CenturyLink; and other numerous area sponsors, including Arthrex, Florida Gulf Coast University and Lex and Eileen Roulston. Media sponsors include: ABC-7, Carter-Pritchett, Media Vista. The Heart Walk is nationally sponsored by Subway. Moana
For centuries, the greatest sailors in the world masterfully navigated the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, 3,000 years ago, their voyages stopped for a millennium – and no one knows exactly why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who is inspired to leave the safety and security of her island on a daring journey to save her people. Inexplicably drawn to the ocean, Moana (voice of Auli i Cravalho) convinces the mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson) to join her mission, and he reluctantly helps her become a wayfinder like her ancestors who sailed before her. Together, they voyage across the open ocean on an action-packed adventure, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills her quest and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity. Facing the crumbling of his life's ambition, he takes one final chance to restore his fading jewel to its former glory by producing the world's greatest singing competition. Five contestants emerge: a mouse, a timid elephant, a pig, a gorilla and a punk-rock porcupine. Opens Dec. 21 - rated PG

Globetrotters at Germain Arena Feb. 24
As the Harlem Globetrotters prepare to bring their 2017 World Tour to the Germain Arena in Estero on Friday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m., the iconic team took a timeout for Guinness World Records Day. Only one year after setting seven official Guinness World Records titles, the Globetrotters broke a single-day total of nine records this year, including the longest basketball hook-shot. Tickets to the see the Globetrotters in Estero start at $25.50 and are officially on sale now at harlemglobetrotters.com or the Germain Arena box office. (Additional fees may apply). The records were broken at the AT&T Center, home of the San Antonio Spurs, during the 12th annual Guinness World Records Day, a global celebration of record breaking launched to celebrate the day the Guinness World Records book sold its 100 millionth copy. Since 2000, the Globetrotters now own 15 current Guinness World records. “We are the original trick shot artists, so it is great to reclaim our records and reestablish our dominance,” said Harlem Globetrotters star Big Easy Lofton. “We
have been training hard so to have a day where we push the limits and try some fun yet challenging shots, is pretty cool. I mean, how many people can say they’re a Guinness World Records title holder? We can’t wait to put smiles on people's faces as we demonstrate our skills and talents on the upcoming world tour.” Among the nine Guinness World Records titles which were set by the Globetrotters, four of them reclaimed records that were originally held by the team and then broken by Dude Perfect. The Globetrotters reclaimed the records of longest basketball hook shot, longest basketball shot blindfolded, most basketball 3pointers made by a pair in one minute, and longest blindfolded basketball hook shot.
