Spending a day at Golisano’s Children’s Museum of Naples By Mandy Carter If you have young kids and have not visited Golisano’s Children’s Museum of Naples (C’MON), then you need to plan a trip soon. My daughter has fallen in love with this interactive museum designed to make learning fun. The museum has so many sections from a grocery store to a restaurant for excellent pretend play. Other areas give you a fun lesson on weather and the seasons while other areas give the kids a chance to get creative with art or building. With all the activity stations, this can provide a full day of entertainment for the family. My daughter did not want to leave the grocery store because it made her feel like a grown up shopping with her cart then checking out. Visit before Jan. 14 and you will get to experience the traveling exhibit, The Children’s China, which is a wonderful
immersion into Chinese culture that adults and children alike will enjoy. And be sure to check out the large playground across the street with a unique dig site that will extend the day trip from learning to physical activity outdoors. This truly is the perfect day trip from Fort Myers for any mom with young kids.

Young survivor moves past cancer with confidence, physical therapy
By Clayton Luz, Lee Health On the first school day of this year, second grader Ian Tebo walked into class—on his own. “To this day, he’s the strongest person I know,” says Christy Tebo, Ian’s mother. “He makes me think the world isn’t a bad place, after all.” For the Tebo family, their world seemed a bad place when on Jan. 4, 2016, 5-year-old Ian was diagnosed with adamantinoma, a rare bone cancer of the right tibia. That previous summer, Ian had fractured his right leg while playing at day care. He spent six weeks in a cast. At the time, Christy sensed something wasn’t right with her son’s leg. “Call it mother’s intuition,” she says. “I wanted a second opinion about Ian’s leg. We were able to finally see a bone tumor specialist that December. That’s when we found out.” Ian underwent successful surgery for his cancer in February 2016. His leg in yet another cast, he recovered for five months before starting physical rehabilitation.

DECEMBER 2017
In March 2017, Ian began working with Christine Hofmann, PT, a pediatric physical therapist with Golisano Children’s Hospital. Ian progressed quickly with Christine, and within weeks was able to hold himself up while sitting on his right side. “He’s a real fighter,” Christine says. “Ian went right ahead into the exercises. His family is really great to work with, too. Ian did all the exercises. We made our sessions into fun routines.” Michael Tebo, Ian’s father, says his son’s progress is unmistakable. “He has so much more confidence,” he says. “He plays now, when he used to be scared to play with his friends. Now he comes in jumping around and excited to show the new skills he was previously scared to do.” “You can’t stop him if you tried,” Christy says. “We’ve enrolled him in swimming lessons, and this past summer he also started Tae Kwon Do. He passed his first belt test last July. There’s also soccer, basketball and football. He just loves to move.”

New Convenient Care opens on Metro Parkway Lee Health opened the doors of its fourth Convenient Care Nov. 20 in the Outpatient Center at 13340 Metro Parkway, near Gulf Coast Medical Center. The new urgent care center is located on the first floor of the Outpatient Center and will be open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week, except some major holidays. Convenient Care offers an alternative to the emergency department for treatment of nonlife-threatening injury or illness with the expertise of skilled physicians in a state-of-the-art clinic. The Convenient Care has 17 exam rooms, including three procedure rooms for laceration repair and abscesses. Convenient Care medical centers are ideal for sprains, strains, cuts, rashes, cold and flu, auto and work-related injuries, and school or sports physicals. Each site is equipped with x-ray capabilities for fractures and broken bones (not protruding through the skin). “Convenient Care is helpful for individuals who don’t have a primary care physician, and it’s a great alternative to using the emergency department for nonlife-threatening medical issues especially during season,” explains Kris Fay, chief administrative
officer of Lee Physician Group. “It gives the community immediate access to quality, hospital-affiliated health care provided by our trusted Lee Physician Group physicians and skilled nurses.” Convenient Care centers are located throughout Lee County and offer quality, walk-in medical care for adults and children in a cost-effective, comfortable environment. Convenient Care is appropriate when: you have a nonlife-threatening emergency, you're unable to get an appointment with your primary care doctor, or if you’re not established with a primary care physician. No appointment or referral is necessary, and most insurance is accepted. The new Outpatient Center is also home to Lee Physician Group (LPG) Cardiology and Infectious Disease offices, and outpatient cardiology testing services. A public open house will be held 3-6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30. An LPG Pulmonology practice is scheduled to open in early December. For more information, visit www.LeeHealth.org, or call 239481-4111.
By Dr. Heather Trapheagen A flexible spending arrangement (FSA) or flexible spending account as they are commonly called, allows an employee to set aside a portion of his or her earnings to pay for qualified family expenses as established in the plan. Eye exams, eyeglasses and contact lenses are approved medical expenses for a health FSA. Many plans, which may run during the calendar year (January-December), will not roll over into the next calendar year. They must be used or the funds will be lost. Be sure to know when your FSA account expires and be sure to use up any
remaining funds in your account. It's your money. Insurance benefits generally also have a similar schedule during the calendar year. You pay a monthly premium whether you use the plan or not. Be sure to take advantage of your benefits & keep your child’s eyes healthy with yearly exams, whether he or she has any vision issues or not. Full Spectrum Family Vision Care provides eye care for the entire family. Appointments can be made with Dr. Heather Trapheagen by calling 573-EYES (3937). Many insurances are accepted.

Makayla Uram, an eighth grade student from North Fort Myers Academy for the Arts, is the Lee County School District winner of the Art in the Capitol contest. Makayla was presented with an award for receiving this prestigious honor on Nov. 7 at NFMAA. Makayla’s winning piece of artwork will be given to our state legislator, Rep. Dane Eagle, and he will deliver the piece to the Capitol building to be placed on display in Tallahassee during the next legislative session, Jan. 9 through March 9, 2018. All school districts in Florida were mandated by House Bill 701 to hold an “Art in the Capitol” contest for students in grades 6 - 8. The Fine Arts
Department announced the contest to our public schools including charter, private and virtual schools. The artwork was judged by local art teachers.
