These are a few of

my favorite things

... to do with the kids in December in SW Florida By Mandy Carter “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go…” Which means I am in the holiday spirit. This is a great time of year to do some fun things with the kids every weekend and even some weeknights because Southwest Florida is packed with unique activities. With so many options, I do have a few that are my favorite, which make my must do in December every year. Many of these take place over a number of days or weekends, so look them up and work them in to you busy schedule for some guaranteed holiday fun! Visit Santa’s Wonderland at Bass Pro Shops In addition to the free photos with Santa kids can enjoy free crafts, games and test out some of the neat toys sold in the store. This is a fun way to spend a few hours and get you in the holiday spirit! I recommend going on a weekday to avoid heavy lines. Visit www.basspro.com more all the details. Ride the Holiday Express Train at night around Lakes Park This fifteen minute train ride on a 1/8 scale miniature train is exceptionally fun during this time of year as you ride through the lit tunnel and holiday decor. This year the holiday express is running Dec 14 - 30. Visit www.rrmsf.org for exact times and cost. Watch a holiday show at Broadway Palm My kids are a big fan of the Broadway Palm Children’s Theatre and their holiday performances never disappoint. Get dressed up and head to the show! This year it is Elf The Musical and The Nutcracker. Get tickets at www.broadwaypalm.com

6 - December 2018

Visit Lights in the Gardens at Naples Botanical Gardens Thousands of lights illuminate the Garden in a unique experience with a night of music and food. Tickets are required from www.naplesgarden.org Unforgettable fun at home From cookie decorating, gingerbread house building, to ornament crafts and an indoor ‘snowball” fight there are so many ways you can get kids engaged and entertained with holiday activities at home. Use this month as a memorable way to end the year with fun moments that will be remembered for years ahead!

Tips for holiday home safety • Check decorative lights for broken or missing bulbs, and frayed wires. • Turn off lights on a tree before leaving your home or going to bed. • Dispose of your tree in a timely fashion after the holidays, as it can easily dry out and pose a fire risk.

While you’re wrapping gifts, trimming the tree, baking cookies, or lighting candles, don’t forget an important holiday task: ensuring your family’s safety. Here are some tips to keep everyone safe, healthy and happy over the holidays:

Décor Tips

• Use non-breakable tree ornaments tied with ribbon instead of metal hooks, which are choking hazards for small children. • Poinsettia, holly, and mistletoe plants can be toxic, depending on the amount ingested by a child. Put plants away from the reach of toddlers. Collect fallen leaves and needles. Use netting with mistletoe and holly plants to prevent children from ingesting their fallen berries. • String decorative lights toward the upper reaches of your holiday tree, away from the curious hands of little ones. The bulbs can burn tiny fingers and loose ones pose a choking hazard. • For outdoor lighting, choose extension cords rated for outside use. Also, don’t overload outlets.

Gift-Giving Tips

• Check the safety label to determine if the gift is age-appropriate for its recipient. • For infants, toddlers, and all children who still mouth objects, avoid toys with small parts which could pose a choking hazard. • Even if a small child is considered advanced for his or her age, he or she should not receive a gift meant for an older, more mature child. • When opening gifts, collect all packaging pieces to eliminate choking hazards. • Never burn colored gift wrap in your fireplace. Some metals found in certain ink pigments can release toxic fumes.

Fire Awareness

• Never decorate a tree with candles. • Keep candles where only adults can reach them. • Extinguish candles before going to bed or leaving the room. Consider replacing candles with electric and battery operated versions. • Your tree should be fresh with green needles. Avoid ones with brown needles, easily bendable branches, and sap-sticky trunks. • To prevent your tree from tipping over, securely fasten it inside a broad stand. • Water your tree every other day to keep it from drying out and becoming a fire hazard. • Artificial trees should be rated fire-retardant and non-allergenic by a recognized testing laboratory.

Avoiding Common Mishaps

• To prevent children from burning themselves on hot holiday food and liquids, place items on a counter top out of their reach. Never use an open oven door to hold a hot dish. • Keep alcoholic beverages away from the reaches of children, and promptly toss empty bottles or cans into the garbage. Courtesy of Lee Health

Kids’ Minds Matter is new children’s mental and behavioral health solution Lee Health and Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida announced a new $10 million campaign to support Kids’ Minds Matter, the region’s new strategic solution for bringing improved access to care for families and providing a framework to connect community partners. “Kids’ Minds Matter has already funded new diagnostic and treatment protocols that will roll out in the community in the coming months, providing much-needed early intervention services for young people dealing with anxiety, depression and trauma,” said Skip Leonard, chief foundation officer at the Lee Health Foundation. “We are so pleased to announce Kids’ Minds Matter as the new face of pediatric mental and behavioral health in the Southwest Florida region where an estimated 46,000 46 - December 2018

local children struggle with these invisible illnesses. The dollars raised and the new partnerships formed through Kids’ Minds Matter ultimately will help these families access the level of care they need.”

With an emphasis on delivering the “right care at the right place and time,” Kids’ Minds Matter is developing the Golisano Center of Excellence for Pediatric Mental Health and a four-tiered model of care that clinically aligns the community, inpatient and outpatient care. Kids’ Minds Matter was founded in 2016 by Susan Goldy and Scott Spiezle, whose daughter struggled with depression and thoughts of suicide at an early age. After consulting a pediatric mental health specialist, they began to understand the issues and helped their daughter seek treatment. Seeing their daughter overcome those issues and progress into adulthood, the couple sought ways to enhance diagnosis and treatment in Southwest Florida. Autism screening for young children to be held Dec. 7

Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will be held on Dec. 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Miromar Outlets, 10801 Corkscrew Road, Estero. It is estimated that one in every 68 children is diagnosed with some form

of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. A physician referral is not required. To schedule a screening, call 239-343-6838.

Movies on the big screen The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

The Grinch

All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key – a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key—which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve Clara’s key and hopefully return harmony to the unstable world. Starring Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Disney’s new holiday feature film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston, and inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale.

Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch lends his voice to the infamous Grinch, who lives a solitary life inside a cave on Mt. Crumpet with only his loyal dog, Max, for company. With a cave rigged with inventions and contraptions for his day-to-day needs, the Grinch only sees his neighbors in Whoville when he runs out of food. Each year at Christmas they disrupt his tranquil solitude with their increasingly bigger, brighter and louder celebrations. When the Whos declare they are going to make Christmas three times bigger this year, the Grinch realizes there is only one way for him to gain some peace and quiet: he must steal Christmas. To do so, he decides he will pose as Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, even going so far as to trap a lackadaisical misfit reindeer to pull his sleigh.
