Million Mile Movement Healthy Lee challenges community to log one million miles Are you up to the challenge? Can the Southwest Florida community collectively log one million miles in less than six weeks? That’s what Healthy Lee— the community collaboration made up of local businesses, government, school, health, religious and community organizations committed to building a healthier SWFL – is asking as it gears up to launch another iteration of the Million Mile Movement. The Million Mile Movement, SWFL’s journey to better health, kicks off Dec. 14 right after the Lee County Digital Heart Walk ends on Dec. 12, and runs through Jan. 24. The competition is using a new app called “The Outbreak” which features family friendly zombies and is open to people and teams of all ages and fitness levels. Form a team and use the new app to work together to fight your way through family friendly zombie character mobs and reach the safe house…. before the horde reaches you! Registration is taking place from Nov. 16 – Dec. 5 and the six-week challenge starts Dec. 14. Employers and area organizations are encouraged to purchase their discounted licenses to sign up their teams (3 – 10 members) by going to www.HealthyLee.com. “Staying fit during the holidays can be a challenge, so we opted to move The Million Mile Movement to a time we can all benefit,” said Gary Griffin, Healthy Lee chair and president and CEO of B&I Contractors, Inc. “The event is also a great way to unite our community around the shared goal of better health and well-being. We encourage everyone in Lee County to participate.” 28 - December 2020

“Activity helps both our mental and physical health, which means it’s an essential part of living a healthy life. The event offers a friendly challenge to other area employers to participate as a great team building exercise since many are working remotely at this time,” said Larry Antonucci M.D., MBA, president and CEO of Lee Health. “The Million Mile Movement is a fun, innovative and inclusive way to empower all of us to be more active. We aim to help our community set healthy goals and motivate everyone to achieve them.” For more information or to register to participate, visit www.HealthyLee.com. The site also offers healthy lifestyle tips for families and children as well as businesses and includes recipes, wellness tools and a community event calendar for

healthy events happening in Lee County. During the challenge, the Outbreak mobile app will automatically sync with participants’ fitness tracking devices (Apple Watch, Fitbit, etc.) or cell phones to track steps. Participants can also enter their daily exercise in the app. The easy-touse website and mobile app allow participants to track their physical activity, such as biking, walking, swimming and running, to reach their personal and team goals. The site tracks steps and a mile is typically between 2,000 and 2,500 steps. All participants are encouraged to invite friends, family members, neighbors and co-workers to join in and track their progress. For more information on how to participate, visit www.HealthyLee.com. Keeping the holidays safe

As Floridians celebrate the holidays with family and friends, it’s important for residents and visitors to take precautions to keep everyone safe. The Florida Department of Health is actively planning for the distribution of a COVID-19 vaccine, making it more important than ever for Floridians to take precautions in their everyday life to mitigate the spread of the virus. This holiday season, the department offers these health and safety recommendations.

ings with people who do not live in their household. • Consider hosting an outdoor gathering rather than an indoor gathering. • Guests who have traveled from other areas or towns should distance themselves from people who are 65 or older and people of any age who have underlying health issues such as lung or heart disease. • Hosts entertaining at home should make sure frequently touched surfaces are cleaned and disinfected before and after gatherings.

Protecting yourself from COVID-19 during gatherings and celebrations

Holiday Travel

• All individuals should wash their hands or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer frequently. • If someone feels ill during the holiday season, get tested for COVID-19 and avoid going out in public or being around at-risk individuals. • Older adults or persons with certain medical conditions who are at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19, or live or work with someone at increased risk of severe illness, should avoid in-person gather-

Family News

• People who are sick should not travel—even if symptoms are mild, infection can spread to others. • Everyone traveling by car should wear seat belts and adults should check that infant and child car seats are properly installed. • If you are traveling from Florida to another state on a commercial flight, wear a mask and social distance as much as possible. Free autism screening for young children Dec. 11 in Fort Myers

Fire Prevention

• Fireplaces, space heaters, candles and food cooking on stoves or ovens should not be left unattended. • A clearance of 3 feet kept around heat sources—fireplaces, air vents, space heaters—is safer. • The manufacturers’ instructions for connecting Christmas light strands should be followed. • Christmas trees should be watered daily—dry pine needles are fire hazards.

Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening will be held on Dec. 11 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Pediatric Specialist Office, 15901 Bass Road, Suite 102, Fort Myers. The ASD screening is conducted by the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The screenings are administered by an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, who has extensive training and experience in typical child development and developmental disorders. A physician referral is not required. To schedule a screening, call 239-343-6838.

Winter Wonderland

Holiday House Dec. 9 - 20

Do you wanna find a snow man in Southwest Florida? Then be sure to not miss “Winter Wonderland,” the 64th Annual Holiday House, presented by the Fort Myers Woman’s Community Club. Dazzling decor in spectacular hues of turquoise, pale aqua, silver, and white, accented with sparkle, provide the backdrop in your search for the elusive snowman in each designer-inspired room. Every year since 1956, hundreds of members and volunteers of the Fort Myers Woman’s Community Club spend hours planning creative designs to transform the interior and exterior of the Langford-Kingston and Burroughs homes, including the lawns, gardens, and grounds, into magical displays of holiday design and décor. “Holiday House is a wonderful tradition our members take great delight in sharing with our community each year,” said Natalie Van Horn, 2020 Holiday House chair. “This year has been especially hard for so many in our community because of the ongoing pandemic, and we are hopeful ‘Winter Wonderland’ will fill our guests with sparkly and joyful holiday cheer.” Holiday House 2020 will open Wednesday, Dec. 9, offering self-guided tours through Sunday, Dec. 20. The hours are 5 to 9 p.m., with the last tour guests admitted at 8:30 p.m.

30 - December 2020

Admission is $5 for adults. Children under age 10 are free. Veterans and active military service members are admitted free with identification. Advance tickets are on sale now and may be purchased through the Fort Myers Woman’s Community Club website at www.fmwcc.net. Tickets may also be purchased at the door. The Fort Myers Woman’s Community Club will observe CDC guidance to safely present Holiday House 2020. Masks (covering both the nose and the mouth) are required for entry and touring the homes. Indoor tours are limited to firstfloor rooms only. Directional signage must be followed to ensure social distancing and one-way flow through each home. Hand sanitizer stations will be located throughout the tour. Regrettably, Santa must remain at the North Pole to stay safe before the big night. Opening hours and activities subject to change based on COVID-19 guidance. The Historic Langford-Kingston Home and Burroughs Home are located in downtown Fort Myers at the corner of First Street and Fowler Street. The club members will see you on the porch to extend a warm “Welcome to Holiday House”… a Fort Myers tradition since 1956, presented by the Fort Myers Woman’s Community Club. Visit www.fmwcc.net for tickets.
