Snowcat Ridge

Christmas attractions in Florida you will love

By Mandy Carter It's that time of year again; Florida might not experience the winter wonderland that some northern states enjoy during the holiday season, but that doesn't mean the Sunshine State lacks Christmas spirit. From dazzling light displays to icy adventures, Florida offers a unique and unforgettable Christmas experience. Here are my family’s top four events that are worth the road trip. Snowcat Ridge If you've ever dreamed of snow tubing down a snowy hill in Florida, Snowcat Ridge in Dade City can make that dream come true. Florida's first and only snow park offers a unique opportunity to experience winter activities in a tropical state. The main attraction at Snowcat Ridge is the Arctic Igloo, a massive snow tubing hill with real snow. You can grab a snow tube and slide down the hill, enjoying the exhilarating rush of the cold breeze as you descend. In addition to snow tubing, Snowcat Ridge offers an Alpine Village with a Christmas market, where you can find a variety of holiday gifts, crafts, and delicious seasonal treats. They also have a snow play area for kids and a Christmas tree forest for the perfect holiday photo backdrop. snowcatridge.com ICE at Gaylord Palms For the most frigid attraction in Florida, take a drive to Gaylord Palms Resort in Orlando for ICE!, the award-winning display of millions of pounds of ice handcarved into amazing sculptures by artisans from China. This year, the theme is a fan 6 - December 2023

favorite: “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” The resort also offers indoor snow tubing, snowball toss, a Snoopy scavenger hunt, a Christmas Cirque show and more! christmasatgaylordpalms.marriott.com EXTRA SPOT TO VISIT: While you are in Orlando, drive 25 miles east to a town named "Christmas." The city has an old spirit. It is worth the drive to send out a letter from its famous post office with the postmark of yes, "Christmas, Florida." Miami Zoo Lights The Miami Zoo transforms into a magical winter wonderland during the holiday season with its annual "Zoo Lights" event. This attraction offers a delightful combination of wildlife and holiday-themed festivities. Stroll through the zoo's beautifully illuminated pathways, and you'll be greeted by thousands of twinkling lights and stunning animal-themed light displays. The

ambiance is festive and inviting. You can enjoy photos with Santa, hot cocoa, and festive treats. The event usually features a colorful holiday tree, live entertainment, and a variety of food options, making it a great way to get into the Christmas spirit while appreciating the beauty of the animal kingdom. zoomiami.org/upcomingevents/event/zoo-lights-miami-2023 Broadway Palm For those seeking a more traditional holiday experience combined with fine dining and entertainment, the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre right here in Fort Myers is the perfect choice. This theater has been a local favorite of ours for years and offers a variety of Broadway-style shows throughout the year. During the Christmas season, they host special holiday-themed productions that are sure to get you in the festive spirit. We have made it a tradition to go enjoy their holiday dinner show the week of Christmas. This year’s holiday performance is Elf: A Musical. broadwaypalm.com Consider exploring one of these festive attractions or one of the many others taking place throughout Florida this holiday season; most importantly, go create cherished memories with your loved ones.

The Charles Dickens holiday classic comes to life as a live 1940s radio broadcast, complete with vintage commercials for fruitcake (extra fancy), and the magic of live sound effects and musical underscoring. A handful of actors bring dozens of character to the stage, as the familiar story unfolds: Three ghosts take Ebenezer Scrooge on a thrilling journey to teach him the true meaning of Christmas. A charming take on a family favorite that will leave no one saying “Bah Humbug!” 239-495-8989

Finding the safest and best toys By Sara Jo Foley, APRN Pediatrics It’s that time of the year again when we begin to think about giving gifts to the loved ones in our lives, and for parents, grandparents, and other grown-ups who have kids in their lives they want to buy for the question “is it a safe toy?” can be a tricky one to decipher! Luckily, the American Academy of Pediatrics (Aap.org) has a few things to keep in mind to buy the perfect toy for your perfect little someone! • Look for warning labels-labels give important information about how to use the toy safely and correctly. Be sure an adult demonstrates proper use of the toy when there are warning labels. • Think BIG. Pick toys that are too big for your kiddo to put in their mouth to prevent choking hazards- especially for kids younger than three years of age. • The AAP recommends you avoid toys that shoot objects into the air. The risk of eye injuries (flashbacks to the timeless Christmas movie?) or choking on small parts is greater. 30 - December 2023

• Loud toys? How loud is too loud? There are some toys that could cause hearing loss due to the loudness of the toys operating system. • Choose soft and stuffed toys that are well made. Ensure there are no loose seams or limbs that may detach and become a choking hazard, avoid toys with bean or pellet-like innards that if spilled could become choking hazards • Plastic toys should be sturdy and without sharp edges • Again, read the label and be sure it says “non-toxic” • Hobby kits or chemistry sets should be reserved for kiddos 12 years of age and older due to the safety recommendations regarding mixing of chemicals and fire safety • Electric toys should be “UL approved” per the AAP, also reminder to keep an eye out for batteries- button batteries are especially harmful to young children if swallowed • Avoid crib toys that are soft or hang inside the crib. Remember, creating a safe sleep environment is crucial for decreasing the risk of SIDS. Soft blankets, toys or objects that dangle would decrease the safety of the sleep space. Enjoy your family time and be safe this holiday season!
