Plan ‘dates’ with your kids

By Mandy Carter Everyone wants to have a close relationship with your child, no matter their age. But like with any relationship, the strength of it can boil down to one thing: spending quality time with them. And what better way than to plan special “dates” with each of them. “Date” is an appropriate term, not just because it is February, but because of it’s true meaning. A date is dedicated time spent one-on-one trying to learn more about a person. It involves talking, asking questions, doing activities together … essentially a date is building a relationship. So, why not have a mom or dad date with our kids? It can be something as simple as a picnic at the park one afternoon to a fancy dinner out at a new restaurant. Mixing it up helps you learn more things about each other, provides new topics to talk about and allows you the opportunity to experience things together. The key to a successful date with your kid is to dedicate this time to them alone and to make them feel special. The individual, planned time forces you to slow down and cherish your child. My kids won’t remember if the car was washed or if my paperwork was caught up, but they will remember a “date” with mommy for donuts and milk after watching the sunrise on the beach. Since this is often referred to as the month of “love,” it seems like the best time to start incorporating kid dates. Kids do not need elaborately planned dates each time, they just need you!

So here are 10 date ideas to get you started: 1. Go out for breakfast before everyone else wakes up 2. Picnic at a new playground 3. Dress up and go out to dinner 4. Movies with popcorn and candy 5. Check out books from the library then go read them together at the park 6. Play mini-golf and get ice cream afterward 7. Go to a mother/daughter tea or mother/son dance. 8. Get manicures then milkshakes 9. Watch the sunset with sparkling grape juice and cheese 10. Spend the night watching new movies and eating snacks in bed

BabyTrivia

Test your knowledge When is the big day?

The most popular day for babies to make their entrance is Tuesday, followed by Monday. Sunday is the slowest day!

A boy, or a girl?

It is the father’s sperm that decides the sex of your baby. Baby + Smile = Gas? A baby is typically capable of their first non-gassy smile at only one month old. A baby can smile instinctively. For years, experts thought a baby smiled because she was just copying the actions of those around her, but even blind babies can smile.

Leftie or rightie?

It is determined at around 10 weeks after birth whether your baby is right-handed or left-handed.

Careful, the baby may know you're mad.

A recent study showed that 15-month-olds remembered that they saw an adult get angry, and even changed their behavior to avoid being the target of that person's anger. So think twice before yelling at your hubby in front of your baby!

Lukas

Oldest Mama-to-be

The age on record for the oldest woman to be pregnant on earth was 66 years.

Heaviest Newborn

The heaviest baby ever on record was 23 pounds 12 ounces.

Born with the Ability to Swim

Newborns naturally hold their breath when underwater, and even splash about with their arms and legs. If you take your baby to a swimming class you’ll see these innate talents in action!

Learning to Talk Begins in the Womb

Your baby could hear your voice and other sounds from about 23 weeks of pregnancy. So although she won't say her first word until she's about a year old, she's learning about language right from the start.

White Noise Magic

Your baby will be soothed and comforted by sounds that remind her of the rhythmic noises she heard in your womb (uterus). The sound of your heartbeat when you hold her close during skinto-skin may also help to calm her and regulate her breathing.

Instinctive Crawling

Alexander

Dakota

Scientists found that if a newborn is placed directly onto his mother's stomach right after birth, the baby will start to use his arms and legs to slowly crawl to his mother's breast to nurse.

SAY “I LOVEYOU” FOOD

Mini Heart Pies Ingredients:

pie crust for a double crust pie 1 cup jam Instructions: Roll out half the pie crust on a lightly floured surface and cut out 10 -12 hearts using a large heart-shaped cookie cutter. (about 5" x 4") Transfer each heart to a lightly greased baking sheet and spoon 1-1.5 tablespoons filling onto each heart. Roll out the other half of the pie crust on a lightly floured surface, and again cut out 10-12 more hearts. Place a second heart on top of each one with filling. Score the edges with a fork to seal. Place in a 375° oven for 15-30 minutes. The baking time will vary depending on your filling. You'll know they're done because the crust will be golden brown. If you take them out and the crust looks translucent, they're not done yet. Bake for another 5 minutes and check again. Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes. Serve warm. Pediatric burn service keeps 78 children close to home Before Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida started its burn service in October of 2017, children who sustained burns were taken to facilities in the Tampa or Miami area for treatment. For most families, the need to travel two hours away for treatment added additional burden to an already over stressful situation. “Golisano Children’s Hospital intends to keep kids and their families close to home for specialized medical care,” says Armando Llechu, chief administrator of the children’s hospital. “That’s our number one goal.” Consider that goal met, thus far. Since the program began, the Pediatric Emergency Department has treated 87 patients through December of 2018; 78 of those children may have had to travel outside of the region for treatment without this program. For children suffering from minor burns, Golisano Children’s Hospital offers burn service treatment. The burn service provides comprehensive care – in the emergency department, in the hospital or in the outpatient pediatric surgery office for continued follow-up. The team is trained to treat every burn seriously. “We know that visiting the hospital can be a scary experience, and some procedures can be painful and

traumatic,” says Alyssa Bostwick, RN, project facilitator for the burn service. “Our medical staff is trained to help calm fear, ease pain, and help your child and family through a stressful time. Our team will answer your questions every step of the way.”

Burn Prevention Safety Tips • Kids love to reach, so to prevent hot food or liquid spills, simply use the back burner of your stove and turn pot handles away from the edge. Keep hot foods away from the edge of your counters.

• Keep an eye on appliances such as irons, curling irons or hair dryers that can heat up quickly or stay warm after use. Unplug these items after you’re done.

• Don’t carry or hold a child while cooking on the stove. Instead, move a high chair in the kitchen within reach or sight before you start. Then talk to your children so they know what’s going on. It’s a great way to spend time together.

• To prevent accidental scalding, set your water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit or the manufacturer’s recommended setting. Check the water with your wrist or elbow before giving your baby a bath.

Autism screening for young

children Feb. 22 in Cape Coral

Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will be held on Feb. 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cape Christian Fellowship, 2110 Chiquita Blvd. S. Cape Coral. It is estimated that one in every 68 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder,

making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. A physician referral is not required. Appointments are not necessary, but parents are encouraged to call 239-343-6838 to schedule or obtain more information.
