READING ROCKS!
NEWS FROM OUR MAGAZINE PARTNERS
Teen battle of the bands contest is open for entries
Teen bands of all genres can enter the Reading Rocks! Teen Battle of the Bands until Feb. 15. The top three bands will perform live March 18 at the Southwest Florida Reading Festival. All bands are encouraged to visit www.ReadFest.org/BandBattle to read the rules, upload an audio or video recording to YouTube and complete the entry form by Feb. 15. The contest is open to bands of two or more individuals who are residents of Lee, Charlotte, Collier or Hendry counties and are between the ages of 13- to 19-years-old on the date of entry. Proof of age is required. The elimination round will be judged by a combination of judge’s panel (60%) and online voting (40%). Online voting will be open from Feb. 17 to March 1. The final battle will be live at the Reading Festival. The judges will determine the first- and second-place winners and the Popular Choice Award will be determined by crowd source voting at the close of the battle.
The first-place prize includes an eight-hour studio recording session at Sonic Recording Studios, a professional photo from Laura Michele Photos and a feature article in Gulf Coast Times. The battle and festival are presented by the Lee County Library System and are intended to encourage involvement in reading and the arts among middle and high school students. “The local teen talent is always astounding. We are again very excited about the Battle and the live performance opportunity this contest offers the teens in Southwest Florida,” festival coordinator Margie Byers said. For more information, or to enter a band go to www.ReadFest.org/BandBattle. Complete author information, schedules of festival activities, partner events, directions to the event and more, are available in the festival app available free at the App Store or Google Play, www.readfest.org or by calling 239-4794636.

Baby

In the United States, more babies are born on Wednesday than on other days of the week. Sunday is the slowest day.
In the United States, more babies are born in late summer and early fall than in other times of the year. February tends to be the month when the least babies are born. Utah has the highest birth rate in the U.S., at about 21 babies per 1,000 people. Vermont has the lowest birth rate, with slightly more than 10 babies born per 1,000 people.
It is estimated that new parents in the U.S. will spend on average $7,000 the first year on a new baby’s diapers, formula, and day care. This does not include medical costs.

Angelfish swim program launches for kids with disabilities By Kate Lynch, Lee Health Spending time in a pool can develop a child’s range of motion, strength and endurance, and is even more important for children with disabilities. According to the National Autism Association, drowning is among the leading causes of death for children with autism. The Angelfish swim lesson program, offered by the Wellness Center - Cape Coral, is not just for children with autism, but is designed specifically for children with any type of challenge. In Angelfish swim lessons, children ages 3 years and older learn life-saving skills and rules around water such as asking for permission before entering a pool. They also are taught how to swim to the side and float on their backs when they are too tired to swim. All instructors are certified through Starfish Aquatics Institute and certified to teach children with disabilities. “We have a toolbox of strategies that specifically target the needs of each child, individually,” says exercise specialist Emily Withington. “The program has three major goals: to teach children how to swim to boost their physical activity levels, for them to develop self-confidence and ultimately, to teach life-saving skills. “The process of learning how to swim helps with balance, coordination and the development of motor skills. As children learn to float and move through the water, they isolate muscle

groups and learn how to coordinate different motions in order to swim.” The Angelfish program works with families and caregivers to decide what type of lesson will be best for their child. “I love what I do because there is nothing more rewarding than seeing the, ‘I did it!’ look light up a child’s face when they have mastered a skill they can use for years to come,” Withington says. Scheduled group lessons: • Monday - Saturday; mainly in the afternoon • 30 minute sessions • Lessons are Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday (8 lessons total) • Saturday, early afternoon lessons are also available for 4 weeks (4 lessons total) Scheduled private lessons: • For children needing more one-on-one instruction • 8 lessons total with 30 minute sessions • Lesson schedule is based on the availability of instructors; Monday - Saturday To enroll your child for private or group swim lessons, visit the front desk of the Wellness Center - Cape Coral, or call Philly McMurrain at 239-849-6669.

Contact lenses may be an option for children
By Heather Trapheagen Contact lenses, if cared for properly, may be a safe option for correcting children’s vision. At times, wearing eyeglasses for certain recreational activities, such as playing sports, may be difficult. Contact lenses may be a convenient alternative. Full-time & parttime wear has been made less complicated by single-use lenses. Single-use lenses are the healthiest contact lens type for all ages, but especially for younger patients to ensure a lifetime of safe wear. Appropriate age for contact lens wear is something a parent should discuss with the
FAMILY NEWS
doctor. If a child is mature enough to handle and care for contact lenses, and is responsible enough to remove and clean the lenses, as directed, wearing contact lenses may be a great option (along with a back-up pair of eyeglasses). Contact lens examinations generally have higher fees, for new and established wearers, due to extra testing, training, and corneal health evaluation. If you would like to see if your child would be a full-time or part-time candidate for contact lenses, call to schedule an appointment with Dr. Heather Trapheagen at 573EYES (3937). Many insurances are accepted.
