Show your kids some love with a weekend trip to South Beach By Mandy Carter Valentine’s Day isn’t just for adults. Share some time with your kids doing something fun, different and memorable- like a couple of days in South Beach feeling spoiled (the kid way)! When I think of South Beach, a getaway with my kids does not instantly come to mind. However, a recent weekend trip to this popular East Coast spot changed my mind.
HOTEL: Staying at Hotel Victor was key to making this a successful kid-focused trip because you will not need your car again until you check out. The rooms are large, comfy and modern. The pool is perfect for kids because it is small, shallow and heated. For another level of the kids feeling spoiled, you have complimentary access to the pool cabanas! If your kids are older, take advantage of the free bike rentals to ride along the coast. Find out more at www.hotelvictorsouthbeach.com BEACH: South Beach is beautiful with wide space to run and play,
gorgeous turquoise water and the colorful lifeguard stations will bring an extra smile to the kids faces. Hotel Victor is located in a wonderful beachfront spot with a playground directly across the street.
FOOD: The Sugar Factory restaurant is located inside Hotel Victor and may become their new favorite restaurant (maybe yours too). This sugar focused restaurant will leave you in awe once the elaborate milkshakes and unique drinks arrive at your table. I decided to make the meal extra memorable by ordering the dessert first! My daughter enjoyed a classic ice cream sandwich that was everything but classic- it was literally larger than her head! My son ordered the Make a Wish milkshake made with vanilla ice cream, white birthday cake, sprinkles, whip cream and completed with a lit candle. Though the menu is heavily focused on deserts and sugary drinks, there is a large amount of inventive food choices. We tried a variety of the appetizers and loved the fried mac and cheese pops. Check out their menu at www.sugarfactory.com ATTRACTION: If it happens to be rainy one afternoon, and you want to stay busy, then take a drive to the Miami Children’s Museum, only 3.5 miles away. This museum is a fantastic way to spend a few hours indoors and is unlike anything here in Southwest Florida.

Pioneer Park Days March 1 - 3 in Hardee County Inside the small town of Zolfo Springs, from March 1 through March 3, a grand event occurs, the 50th annual Pioneer Park Days. Pioneer Park Days is one of the largest, and is the oldest antique tractor, steam engine and farm equipment shows in the Southeast. Some of the highlights include over 200 exhibits of tractors, hit and miss steam engines and farm equipment. Pioneer Park Days is an event that teaches the young how their great grandparents lived and many times brings a flicker of remembrance to the old pioneers who made Hardee County great. Artifact collections of the 1800s + eras can be seen at the Cracker Trail Museum. It includes a wide range of pioneer household goods, farming implements, photographs, articles about Florida Cowboys & Indians, and additional historical documents. Around the museum a Pioneer village was erected by generous donators to display a 1914 Baldwin Locomotive Engine #3 (also known as the Loping Gopher), C.A. Bryant Blacksmith Shop, and the Hart Cabin with pieces of furniture inside built by Mr. Hart, plus more. Each day at 2 p.m. the antique tractors host a tractor parade around the outside perimeter of the park. Plenty of old time demonstrations will be on hand at Pioneer Village during Pioneer Park Days. A sampling of demonstrations: George Altman & his whip making, rag rugs, weaving, pine needle baskets, walking sticks by Michael Lord, rustic wood working, Cantu bees observation hives, old time toy making, Paynes Creek State Park participation and more. Rick Smith of "A Land Remembered" will have two multimedia shows on Saturday at

KID-APPROVED FUN FOOD
Say “I Love You” with Sweets Marbled Graham Cracker Toffee Bark Ingredients: 10 full-size honey graham crackers, or enough to cover pan 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter 1 cup light brown sugar, packed 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste 2 cups white chocolate chips or white melting chocolate Red or pink food coloring Toothpick
Instructions: •Preheat oven to 350F. •Line a 9×13-inch pan parchment paper. •Place graham crackers in pan in a single, flat layer so pan is completely covered. Set aside. In a medium, saucepan add the butter, brown sugar, salt, and heat over medium-high heat to melt. Stir constantly until butter has melted. •After butter has melted, allow mixture to boil for about 4 1/2 to 5 minutes at a medium-fast boil. Stir constantly. As you approach the 4 minute mark, mixture should seem thickened with the consistency of medium-thick caramel sauce. •Evenly pour mixture over graham crackers. Bake for about 7 minutes, or until there’s bubbling around the edges. While baking, melt white chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl, removing from microwave and stirring every 30 seconds until melted. •Remove pan from oven at the 7-minute mark. Pour melted chocolate evenly over the caramel-covered grahams. If needed, use a spatula to smooth it into an even, smooth layer of melted chocolate. •Drop one drop of food coloring at a time, every few inches apart, on your melted chocolate layer, and using a toothpick, swirl the food coloring drop to create a “marbled” effect. •Allow to cool for about 3 to 4 hours, or until chocolate has set and dessert is sliceable. Cut into squares once chocolate has completely hardened. https://glitterinc.com 24 - February 2018

Join the CFABS Teen Players for Footloose. When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn't prepared for are the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, determined to exercise the control over the town's youth that he cannot command in his own home. When the reverend's rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren's reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. 239-495-8989

Technology helps steady gait of young boy with cerebral palsy By Clayton Luz, Lee Health
Five-year-old Sam Sherman wears a battery-powered orthotic aide on his right calf as he exercises with physical therapist Melissa Murphy. 48 - Febrnuary 2018
Five-year-old Sam Sherman has a history of tripping and falling when walking, even in his orthotics or leg braces. But when Sam, who lives with cerebral palsy, swaps out his braces for an electronic device worn around his right calf, he’s able to walk—even run—without tripping and falling. Sam was born 2 ½ months prematurely at a hospital in New York state. “We were told Sam would never walk, run or jump,” Rochelle Sherman recalls about her son’s prognosis. She brought Sam home to Florida eight weeks later, and started him with physical therapy at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. “Sam was 6 months old,” she says. “We’ve been coming to the children’s hospital every week since.” As Sam progressed in his rehabilitation, he developed foot drop, a common symptom of cerebral palsy. Caused by weakness or paralysis of the muscles that lift the foot, foot drop contributed to Sam’s frequent trips and falls. When Rochelle Sherman saw a commercial about an orthotic device that helped people diagnosed with foot drop improve their balance, stability, and gait, she asked Sam’s physical therapist, Melissa Murphy, PT, to inquire about it. “Hanger Inc. and the Freedom to Walk Foundation reached out to us with a unique opportunity,” Murphy says. Hanger Inc., a provider of orthotic and prosthetic services and devices, and Tampa-based Freedom to Walk Foundation offered to evaluate Sam for the orthotic aide. Powered by a single “AA” battery, the device sends electric impulses to the affected foot allowing the foot and leg to lift and follow through as they would with a natural, unimpaired gait. “Sam had a successful trial with the device, which improved his walk with a more functional and normalized gait pattern,” Murphy says. Most insurers won’t pay for the FDAapproved device, which costs $5,000. But at a gala event in October, the Freedom to Walk Foundation presented Sam and his mother with a free one. Family News
Go Red for Women Feb. 2 The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement invites you to unite in the fight against the No. 1 killer of women – cardiovascular diseases – by participating in National Wear Red Day on Friday, Feb. 2. Join the local National Wear Red Day effort by: • Wearing red on Friday, Feb. 2 – National Wear Red Day. • Turning social media profiles/pages red, and by taking selfies of families, friends and pets wearing red. Tag with the #GoRedSWFL hashtag. • Coordinating offices, buildings and other public spaces to “Go Red” by lighting with red bulbs/filters.
• Sharing the American Heart Association/Go Red For Women materials with friends, family members and colleagues. Cardiovascular diseases, which include stroke, claim the life of a woman about every 80 seconds. But about 80 percent of cardiovascular diseases may be prevented. And there is good news: heart disease and stroke may be prevented by understanding family healthy history, knowing your numbers and making simple lifestyle changes. For more information on National Wear Red Day and the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign, visit www.GoRedForWomen.org.
Autism screening for young children Feb. 9 in Cape Coral Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will be held on Feb. 8 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wellness Center of Cape Coral at 609 SE 13th Court. more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. The ASD screening is conducted by the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. A physician referral is not required. To schedule a screening, call 239343-6838.

Historic Visions exhibit at Naples Depot Museum The Naples Depot Museum presents Historic Visions by the Naples Art Association’s Thursday Outdoor Painters. Historic Visions will be on display Feb. 1 through March 31. A free opening reception, sponsored by the Friends of the Collier County Museums, will be held Feb. 1 from 5 – 7 p.m. What began as a small endeavor to provide a tiny fishing village with a cultural base blossomed into today’s flourishing Naples Art Association. In 1954, George Rogers placed an ad in the Collier County News inviting artists to a get-together at the Naples Woman’s Club. Lasting friendships were formed when these community leaders gathered Family News
together to discuss art and painting. Elsie Dorey Upham, George Rogers, and Grace Lake formed the Naples Art Association in 1956. By 1984, the Thursday Outdoor Painters had spread out across Collier County to preserve history with their paintings. Historic Visions continues this tradition by forever capturing various historic buildings, sites, and landscapes throughout Collier County and Naples in paint.
