Experience some Disney magic
A few tips for Disney On Ice! By Mandy Carter If your family is anything like ours, it’s all about finding experiences that will turn into lasting memories. If you have young kids, then a family date to watch Disney On Ice will do just that! Disney on Ice is a perfect way to experience some Disney magic without going to the parks. The skaters are very talented and bring the story to life on the ice. Disney on Ice tours all around the country each year and often stops here in SW Florida for a select amount of days. Mickey’s Search Party is coming to Hertz Arena next month (March 27-29) and my daughter cannot wait to see the characters back on the ice again. This show will take you on a quest with Mickey Mouse, Peter Pan, Ariel, and more. This is a brand-new adventure filled with world-class skating, high-flying acrobatics and unexpected stunts. Make the most of the next Disney on Ice show with these tips. 1. Stick to your budget by bringing along your own souvenirs. There will be tons of Disney toys, light up items and T-shirts for sale at a very high price. I rec-
ommend picking up a few things from the Dollar Store a few days beforehand, like Disney themed buttons and glow stick wands. The kids enjoy them and are not a bit concerned with passing by the souvenir booths. 2. This is Disney - so not only is it totally acceptable to dress the part-but it makes the night that much more fun. There is nothing better than being in an arena with hundreds of families just like ours, seeing everyone in their favorite Disney outfits, be it a princess dress or your favorite Disney T-shirt. It will make you feel as if you are part of the show. 3. Bring blankets or coats. It is cold in the arena, especially with the ice rink! Don’t let a freezing child ruin the experience. 4. Eat before you go. So, plan to grab your lunch or dinner before the show. This will not only save you money, but no one will say they are hungry halfway through the show. 5. Splurge for a souvenir snack. Disney does a great job combining souvenirs and snacks like slushies and popcorn. The cups that they come in are awesome and have the kids reminiscing well have the show has left town. 6. Don’t be late. Like everything Disney does, the show starts right on time! Keep in mind that traffic around the arena will be heavier than usual, parking and security will also take time. So plan accordingly. You will not want to miss the opening. For more information on the next show coming to Southwest Florida, visit www.disneyonice.com/mickeys-search-party. EDITOR’S NOTE: Hertz Arena has a new security policy about bags. Visit www.hertzarena.com for what you can and cannot bring.

The annual Edison Festival of Light runs Feb. 8 - 16 at various locations in Fort Myers. Feb. 8 includes Day of Discovery at the Lee County Public Education Center, Mutt Strutt (downtown noon - 4 pm), Food Trucks & Craft Beer (downtown noon - 7 pm). The Junior activities on Feb. 9 are all downtown. The Jr. Fun Run starts at noon at First and Lee streets, the junior parade starts at 2:30 p.m. and the Junior Court coronation and awards start at 4:30 pm. at the Davis Art Center. The Junior Parade starts at First and Heitman, turns right on Monroe, left on Second, left on Hendry, right on First and a left on Lee Street. Crafts on the River takes place Feb. 15 and 16 in the Second Street parking lot. The 5K Run is on Feb. 15 (at Campo Felice), and the car show is on Feb. 16. On Saturday, Feb. 15, people from all over the world will be lining the streets along US 41 and throughout the downtown River District to watch the biggest night parade in the Southeast. People have been watching the Edison Festival of Light Grand Parade for more than 80 years. Some have had the same family spot for decades and mark their spots well in advance. The grand parade starts at Fort Myers High School at 7 p.m. and heads downtown.
A few favorite viewing spots will change due to a new route to accommodate the construction for the newest downtown hotel. Some of those spots have already been marked off along Monroe Street. Marking your spot for the Edison Festival of Light Grand Parade? • DO NOT plan to sit on Monroe Street or Edwards Drive in front of Harborside Event Center. • Instead, mark your spot on Main Street or Hendry. • Or find a prime spot on US 41 between Lions Park and MLK. • Additional reserved seats can be purchased from non-profit groups along the parade route. You can just show up on parade day and your spot and chair will be waiting. For more about Edison Festival of Light, visit online at www.edisonfestival.org or call 239-334-2999.
Restored carousel now open at The Shell Factory The Shell Factory & Nature Park is the recipient of a generous donation, an antique carousel, courtesy of a local donor. The donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, has been a longtime visitor to the Shell Factory and is grateful the family-fun destination could accept the donation and keep the carousel close to home. Located at 16554 N. Cleveland Avenue in Fort Myers, the attraction is now open and operates seven days a week during normal business hours. Built in the 1920s, the full-size carousel was produced by the C.W. Parker Company. Encompassing a 36-foot diameter, the ride boasts two chariots and 20 painted horses and travels at three miles per hour. For the young and old alike, the three-anda-half-minute ride is accompanied by calliope music and gives riders the magical experience of taking a stroll down memory lane. The cost to ride the carousel is $1 per person. A true labor of love, all Shell Factory & Nature Park employees had a hand in helping to restore and repair the carousel prior to assembling it on the property. “We are truly blessed to be the recipient of this generous donation,” said Pam Cronin, owner of the Shell Factory. “My late husband and I attended the IAAPA show every year and we marveled at the spectacular 3-story carousel on display. This gift is a special sign that may just have come with help from above. We look forward to sharing the ride with our visitors and the local community.” The Shell Factory & Nature Park is located off US 41 in North Fort Myers. For more information, visit online at www.ShellFactory.com or call 239-995-2141.

Pre-BabyTrivia
Test your knowledge Longest pregnancy? The longest recorded pregnancy was 375 days! (Over 12 months) Oldest Mama-to-be The oldest recorded woman to have a baby was 66 years old. Conception chances? At age 30, a couple’s monthly chance of conception is around 20 percent. By age 40, the chance is around 5 percent each month. Best time to have a baby? In the United States, the highest percentage of infants are born between 8 a.m. and noon each day. Less than 3 percent of infants are born between midnight and 6:59 a.m. What’s up with my voice? Your voice can change during pregnancy. That’s because hormonal changes can cause your vocal folds to swell. It will most likely go back to normal after delivery or breastfeeding. What’s leaking? Moms-to-be can start producing breast milk just 14 weeks into their pregnancy. Are you my mommy? By the third trimester, a developing baby can recognize their mother’s voice from inside the womb. What just bit me? About 1 in every 2,000 babies are born with teeth.

Shape of your belly can predict the gender? The truth: Carrying low? Legend says you’re having a boy. If your belly is higher up, it’s a girl. Actually, stomach muscles stretch with subsequent pregnancies. So, if a woman’s belly is higher up, it probably just means she has strong abdominal muscles or it’s her first pregnancy.

BabyTrivia
Test your knowledge Boo! Babies can scare themselves. It doesn’t take much to startle a newborn: a loud noise, strong scent or bright light. Stinky Situation Babies first poop doesn't stink. The black, tar-like stuff called meconium is made up of mucus, fluid from the womb, and anything else they digested while inside mom. But it doesn't yet have the gut bacteria that make poop smelly. Baby + Smile = Gas? A baby is typically capable of their first non-gassy smile at only one month old. A baby can smile instinctively. For years, experts thought a baby smiled because she was just copying the actions of those around her, but even blind babies can smile. Leftie or rightie? Babies like to face right. This bias lasts for a few months, and it may help explain why more people are right-handed, too. Baby Tears Babies cry without tears, at first. Babies start crying around 2-3 weeks, but tears don't show up until they're about a month old. So scary! Sometimes infants stop breathing. Likely when they're sleeping, they may pause without a breath for 5 to 10 seconds -- just enough time to make a new mom or dad panic. Irregular breathing is normal. (But if your baby stops breathing for a longer time or turns blue, it’s a medical emergency.) Baby Breasts Newborns have breasts. They form because babies absorb estrogen from mom, and they'll usually go away within a few weeks. Yummy! Infant tonsils have taste buds. Although a baby has about the same number of taste sensors as kids and younger adults, they cover more areas, including the tonsils and the back of the throat. A newborn can taste sweet, bitter, and sour, but not salty (until around 5 months). www.webmd.com

Kids can get free flu shot at Florida Dept. of Health in Lee County The Florida Department of Health is strongly encouraging all unvaccinated residents to get their flu shot as soon as possible. Flu vaccination is the best way to prevent the flu and its potentially serious complications. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that, nationwide, for the 2019- 2020 season so far, there have been at least 6.4 million cases of influenza, more than 55,000 associated hospitalizations and approximately 2,900 related deaths. “With this year’s flu season in full swing, it is critical that adults and children get the flu vaccine to protect against infection and help prevent the spread of seasonal flu to others,” said Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez. “By getting a flu shot now, you will protect yourself, as well as your family and friends.” “Influenza is a contagious virus that can spread rapidly in our communities and cause severe illness resulting in hospitalization or death,” said Florida Surgeon General Dr. Scott Rivkees. “Getting vaccinated is the best way to avoid the flu; it reduces the spread of the virus and can also help make illnesses less severe for those who do still get sick.”
Get the Flu Shot
The vaccine is recommended for everyone six months and older, including

pregnant women. Individuals that are at most risk for getting severely ill from the flu are young children, pregnant women, people with certain chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, heart disease or lung disease, and people aged 65 years and older. It takes approximately two weeks after vaccination for your body to develop protection against the flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend getting a flu vaccine every year because flu viruses evolve quickly, and last year’s vaccine may not protect against the current year’s strain. Even if the vaccine does not fully protect against the flu, it may reduce the severity of symptoms and the risk of complications.
Where to Get the Flu Shot
Flu vaccines are offered at health care providers’ offices, clinics, county health departments, pharmacies, schools, college health centers and from many employers. Find flu vaccine in your area: VaccineFinder.org. Learn more online at FluFreeFlorida.com. The Florida Department of Health in Lee County provides flu shots to children and uninsured adults at no or low cost. Call (239) 461-6100 for an appointment to receive a flu shot. Family News

Florida Renaissance Festival Seven weekends of themed fun Feb. 8 - March 22
All lords and ladies are cordially invited to step back in time during seven weekends of adventure at the annual Florida Renaissance Festival. New themed weekends, new entertainment acts and more await those who look fondly upon years (ahem, centuries) past. All are invited to the grandiose event taking place Feb. 8 through March 22 at Deerfield Beach’s Quiet Waters Park. For the fifth year in a row, the timeless Florida Renaissance Festival will offer seven jam-packed themed weekends to ring in its 28th season. This year, the celebration kicks off with a return to the English Monarchy and Henry VIII is back! Prepare for a greeting by jesters, jugglers, and jousting knights upon entering the gates, and sweet melodies can be heard from every corner of the kingdom. It’s a full day of entertainment where the entire family can marvel at fan favorite acts and performances that include immersive and interactive, real audience-participation scenarios. Join in on the fun with human powered rides, artisan craft shops and enough food & drink for a royal family feast! One of the nation’s most beloved events, with over 100,000 annual attendees and more than two million people having participated over the festival’s tenure, the Florida Renaissance Festival has devoted 28 years to capturing the essence of the Renaissance through entertainment and living history. “We’re thrilled to introduce new

It’s a wonderful way to celebrate history and culture while learning something new at the same time. Rodriguez has helped the Florida Renaissance Festival set the standard for all festivals of this nature by going “beyond Renaissance.” Booking acts sprawling
