Parenting resolutions for 2019 Six goals for creating a
better year for your family By Mandy Carter It’s that time of year again. A time where we all reflect on what we did and didn’t do last year and what we want to do this year. While planning your resolutions for the year, make sure to include a list for just the parent-side of things. Here are my “mom goals” for 2019. I hope to create a year full of meaningful moments, relaxing nights and authentic family time. I hope you will join me in creating a road map of balance and happiness for our families. 1. Save on the little things so you can do the big things. Removing some small frequent purchases like coffee and slushies will add up; then use that money to make a big family purchase that everyone will enjoy for a long time. 2. Go on a tech diet. Smartphone and tablet use has gotten out of control and not just for the kids. Gradually reducing the time everyone spends on a device will not only help everyone’s eyes, it allows more time for creative play and is sure to bring us closer. 3. Be in the picture...literally. Most parents have tons of photos of their kids having fun, but mom and dad are often missing from those frozen memories. Make a point to get in those pictures (even if it means you become a selfie taking mom) so that when your kids look back at them in the future, they will remember that you were there. 4. Reinstate the family dinner. Get in the habit of eating together as a family with nothing allowed at the table but food and conversation. 5. Be positive. Positivity is contagious, so be sure to be a shining example. Remove all negative words, like “I feel fat.” Show your kids how to find positive solutions to even the most negative situation. And always remind them of the things we always have to be happy for.
Be in the picture 6. Boost your kids’ self esteem. Between a critical, media focused society, absent parents and bullies at school, many kids seem to have such low self-esteem. While it is impossible to control what happens at school or what they see and read in the media, we have control over the most important place of influence: their home. Create an atmosphere of safety, praise, support, affection and happiness. In 2019, my overall goal of these parenting resolutions is to make my children feel important and loved - this will create the happiest of new years.

Lee County student open enrollment for 2019-20 school year Jan. 14 to March 1 The Student Assignment Open Enrollment Period for the 2019 - 2020 school year in Lee County will begin Jan. 14 and will run through March 1.
Pre-printed applications
Student Enrollment staggers the mailing of pre-printed applications. Applications will be mailed on: • Jan. 11 to incoming 9th graders attending a District school (excluding students enrolled in a Charter school) • Jan. 18 to incoming 6th graders attending a District school (excluding students enrolled in a Charter school or District K-8 School) • Jan. 25 to incoming Kindergarten students currently attending a District Pre-K school (excluding students enrolled in a VPK at a daycare or private center) Children enrolled in a VPK program at a private daycare will not receive a pre-printed application and the parent/guardian will need to come to a student assignment office. Children enrolled in VPK programs operated by city or county government will not receive a pre-printed application and the parent/guardian will need to come to a Student Assignment office. If your child is enrolled in a Lee County Public School (excluding charter 12 - January 2019
schools) and you did not receive your paper application in the mail, the parent/guardian will need to come into a Student Assignment Office with a picture ID and proof of address. They are unable to provide a pin number for you over the phone.
What is student assignment?
In the School District of Lee County, an open-enrollment system exists to meet the unique needs of our community. This means parents and caregivers have a choice related to what school their child(ren) attend. Student Assignment allows you to choose from a variety of schools within the “zone” where you live. This is different than the traditional practice of students assigned to a school without parental input. The Student Assignment Office accepts school registration applications year-round. However, during each school year the district holds one early application period for the parents/guardians of students entering kindergarten, grade six and grade nine. This application period is also intended for students who are new to the district, or for students who have changed zones or subzones and are no longer qualified to attend the same school. Participation in this application period by students in other grade levels is optional. Family News

Teeth Fairies: A Baby Teeth Tradition From about 5 to 12 years of age, the average child loses 20 baby teeth. The new book and its accompanying doll set aim to help children and parents through the tooth-losing process, a whimsical and fun idea Bencosme used with her own children. Similar to the beloved Elf on the Shelf, this is how the experience works: When your child gets a loose tooth, a fairy will arrive in the home. Kids can name the fairy and find her at home every morning when she returns from "Tooth Fairyland." The best part for parents? No more worrying about waking your sleeping child. The fairy will then leave your child a surprise and return every time the child gets a loose tooth.
