Organizing toys Marquita Tinsman with her daughters, Sadie, Ellie and Riley

It’s official … Christmas is over. It’s time for my Christmas décor to come down. I need to stop eating so many sugar cookies. More than anything, I need to find a place for the kids’ new toys. We will donate some of their old toys, but I still need to get creative in finding a place for their new toys. I was looking for some cheap hacks to help me organize my kids’ toy room. Here is what I found: ~ Label and decorate empty coffee canisters and diaper wipe

containers for storage • Plastic envelopes or stackable paper trays for puzzle storage. • Stuff bean bags with stuffed animals • Plastic over-the-door shoe organizer for Barbies or action figures • Plastic bar soap container for playing cards Well, there’s a start. This is what I will be doing this month! Happy New Year!

JANUARY 2017

Lee public school application process runs Jan. 23 - March 24 The Student Assignment Open Enrollment Period for the 2017-2018 school year will begin Jan. 23 and will run through Friday, March 24. The Open Enrollment Period is for: •Any student entering kindergarten, 6th or 9th Grade •Students who are new to the district •Currently enrolled students who would like to change schools for next school year On Thursday, Jan. 19, pre-printed applications will be mailed to parents of Pre-K students attending Lee County Public Schools who are eligible for kindergarten for 2017-18, as well as current fifth- and eighth-grade students who currently attend a Lee County Public School. The pre-printed applications will not be provided to new students in the district or students currently attending a charter school. If families received a pre-printed application, they are strongly encouraged to apply online via the district’s website. A unique personal identification number (PIN) is issued for each student authorized to participate in this manner. Children enrolled in a VPK program at a private daycare will not receive a pre-printed application and the parent/guardian will need to come to a Student Assignment office. Children enrolled in VPK programs operated by city or county government will not receive a pre-printed application and the parent/guardian will need to come to a Student Assignment office. If your child is enrolled in a Lee County Public School (excluding Charter Schools) and you did not receive your paper application in the mail, the parent/guardian will need to

come into a Student Assignment Office with a picture ID and proof of address. They are unable to provide a pin number for you over the phone. What is student assignment?

In the School District of Lee County, an open-enrollment system exists to meet the unique needs of our community. This means parents and caregivers have a choice related to what school their child(ren) attend. Student Assignment allows you to choose from a variety of schools within the “zone” where you live. This is different than the traditional practice of students assigned to a school without parental input. The Student Assignment Office accepts school registration applications year-round. However, during each school year the district holds one early application period for the parents/guardians of students entering kindergarten, grade six and grade nine. This application period is also intended for students who are new to the district, or for students who have changed zones or sub-zones and are no longer qualified to attend the same school. Participation in this application period by students in other grade levels is optional.

Kindergarten registration

Parents of children who will be five on or before Sept. 1 should apply for kindergarten for the 2017-2018 school year. Parents need to register their child even if they have an older child already in school – assignments are not automatic.

Million Mile Movement: A family activity

The new year brings hope of new beginnings, and a time when many resolve to change and improve our health, wellness and lifestyle. This year, make a family resolution to get moving – together. Healthy Lee is challenging our community to join the Million Mile Movement—to collectively log 1,000,000 miles in three months. The challenge, which runs Jan. 9 - March 31, might be just what we all need to set a healthy goal, and to find the support and motivation to keep and reach it – it’s a great way to spend time with the family in a healthy activity. The Million Mile Movement is a fun, inclusive way to empower all of us to move. Whether you walk, run, bike, swim or participate in other aerobic activities that energize your body and mind, every step counts—for yourself and our community. Here are the steps to take so your steps count:

Register to participate

The Million Mile Movement challenge is free and open to all Lee County residents—of all ages and fitness levels. Visit www.HealthyLee.com/news-events/Million-MileMovement to register as an individual or create a team with your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors along The Corridor. Participants will receive a weekly email newslet-

ter with health tips and motivation throughout the challenge. Registration is now open. (If you participated last year, your registration automatically renews. Please log in to update your profile.)

Set your goal

How many miles do you want to move during the challenge? Make sure your goal is realistic and attainable, so you stay motivated to reach it. If you choose to create a team, set your own individual goal, as well as the team’s goal.

Get moving and log your miles

Keep count of your efforts and then visit the easy-to-use website— www.HealthyLee.com/news-events/MillionMile-Movement —to track your healthy activities. This keeps you motivated to continue working toward your goal, and keeps you updated on our community’s progress toward 1,000,000 miles. The website also features a movement converter tool to convert a variety of healthy activities into miles, so incorporate different exercises to keep yourself interested, engaged and challenged. If you’re looking for different ways to get moving in Lee County, the event calendar on the Healthy Lee website features health and wellness events, activities and ideas. Come on, Lee County, let’s make move 1,000,000 miles in the next three months – we can do it!

Sing

Illumination has captivated audiences all over the world with the beloved hits Despicable Me, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, Despicable Me 2 and Minions, now the second-highest-grossing animated movie in history. Following the release of this summer’s comedy blockbuster The Secret Life of Pets, Illumination presents Sing this holiday season. Set in a world like ours but entirely inhabited by animals, Sing stars Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey), a dapper Koala who presides over a once-grand theater that has fallen on hard times. An eternal optimist, and a bit of a scoundrel, he loves his theater above all and will do anything to preserve it. Facing the crumbling of his life's ambition, he takes one final chance to restore his fading jewel to its former glory by producing the world's greatest singing competition. Five contestants emerge: a mouse, a timid elephant, a pig, a gorilla and a punk-rock porcupine. Now playing - rated PG

A Dogʼs Purpose

Based on the beloved bestselling novel by W. Bruce Cameron, A Dog’s Purpose, from director Lasse Hallström (The Cider House Rules, Dear John, The 100-Foot Journey), shares the soulful and surprising story of one devoted dog (voiced by Josh Gad) who finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he teaches to laugh and love. The family film told from the dog’s perspective also stars Britt Robertson, KJ Apa, John Ortiz, Juliet Rylance, Luke Kirby, Peggy Lipton, Pooch Hall and Dennis Quaid. A Dog’s Purpose is produced by Gavin Polone (Zombieland, TV’s Gilmore Girls). The film from Amblin Entertainment and Walden Media is executive produced by Alan Blomquist, Mark Sourian and Lauren Pfeiffer, and it will be distributed by Universal Pictures. The LEGO Batman Movie

In the irreverent spirit of fun that made The LEGO Movie a worldwide phenomenon, the self-described leading man of that ensemble – LEGO Batman – stars in his own big-screen adventure: The LEGO Batman Movie. But there are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker’s hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up.
