Candytopia: It’s scrumdidilyumptious By Mandy Carter If you have ever dreamed of nibbling your way through the Candyland board game or finding a Golden Ticket from Willy Wonka, then you will want to take a drive to experience Candytopia, where your taste buds and your imagination will soar!

This unique museum gives people of all ages a chance to explore a world of sugary bliss, with over a dozen carefully curated and crafted rooms all revolving around candy! There are photo spots throughout the museum where you can scan the Sugar Rush app and have some fun photos taken and sent to your phone (like the one of me in all the marshmallows)! And don't worry, you don't just have to look at it. You can touch everything as you explore the rooms but you will also have a chance to taste some of the sweets of Candytopia with nine sample stations scattered throughout the experience including chocolate truffles, taffy, bags of gummy bears and more!

6 - January 2020

This Kids Tag Art design from a Trafalgar Elementary School fifth grader named Alison was one of nearly 100 Award of Distinction winners last year.

Kids Tag Art encourages creativity, benefits schools

Embracing and celebrating creativity is the backdrop of the Lee County Tax Collector’s Kids Tag Art program, which is recognizing 104 fifth-grade students in the School District of Lee County for their imaginative designs that will appear on specialty license plates. The program, now in its fifth year, is a partnership between the Tax Collector’s office and the Foundation for Lee County Public Schools. The program encouraged the fifth-grade students to create artwork based on the theme “Fun in the Sun.” Approximately 3,900 designs were submitted, judged and the top two from the 52 participating Lee County elementary schools are recognized with an “Award of Distinction.” Their winning designs can be displayed on front end plates and will soon be available for public purchase at leetc.com with 100% of proceeds

going to each of the schools. In the meantime, the public can get their hands on this exciting collection of art as past Award of Distinction designs are available for purchase at each of the Lee County Tax Collector’s offices in Cape Coral, Fort Myers, South Fort Myers, Bonita Springs and Lehigh Acres. The cost is $20 and payable by check made out to The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools, Inc. The Tax Collector’s Office also sells sponsorships for the program, raising even more money that goes to help elementary school teachers pay for art supplies. Last year’s program raised $34,400 to support arts in the schools. Sponsorships are available by calling 239-533-6060. Call Beverly Burke of The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools Inc. at 239337-0433 for program information.

Jan. 7 program at Wa-Ke-Hatchee Rec Center Circumnavigating Florida with the Grandchildren

A Lee County program called Circumnavigating Florida with the Grandchildren will be the second talk in a series of free Calusa Blueway-related programs set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7 at the Wa-Ke Hatchee Recreation Center, 16760 Bass Road, Fort Myers. Lynette Brown and her grandchildren paddled around Florida on the 1,515 mile Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail. They will share photos and stories about their adventures.

“In an age where many children are fixated on their phones and video games, it will be awesome to hear about this family’s epic adventures out on the water,” Calusa Blueway coordinator Mike Hammond said. “I’m also looking forward to tips on taking my own children out for longer paddles.” For more information and directions to the program, contact Wa-Ke Hatchee Recreation Center at 239432-2154. Trail information is at www.calusablueway.com or www.leeparks.org/blueway.

SCHOOL ASSIGNMENT

Lee County student open enrollment for 2020-21 school year Jan. 13 to Feb. 28

The Student Assignment Open Enrollment Period for the 2020 - 2021 school year in Lee County will begin Jan. 13 and will run through Feb. 28.

Pre-printed applications

Student Enrollment staggers the mailing of pre-printed applications. Applications will be mailed on: • Jan. 10 to incoming 9th graders attending a District school (excluding students enrolled in a charter school) • Jan. 16 to incoming 6th graders attending a District school (excluding students enrolled in a charter school or District K-8 School) • Jan. 24 to incoming Kindergarten students currently attending a District PreK school (excluding students enrolled in a VPK at a daycare or private center) Children enrolled in a VPK program at a private daycare will not receive a preprinted application and the parent/guardian will need to come to a student assignment office. Children enrolled in VPK programs operated by city or county government will not receive a pre-printed application and the parent/guardian will need to come to a Student Assignment office. If your child is enrolled in a Lee County Public School (excluding charter

schools) and you did not receive your paper application in the mail, the parent/guardian will need to come into the Student Enrollment Office in Fort Myerswith a picture ID and proof of address. They are unable to provide a pin number for you over the phone.

What is student assignment?

In the School District of Lee County, an open-enrollment system exists to meet the unique needs of our community. This means parents and caregivers have a choice related to what school their child(ren) attend. Student Assignment allows you to choose from a variety of schools within the “zone” where you live. This is different than the traditional practice of students assigned to a school without parental input. The Student Enrollment Office accepts school registration applications yearround. However, during each school year the district holds one early application period for the parents/guardians of students entering kindergarten, grade six and grade nine. This application period is also intended for students who are new to the district, or for students who have changed zones or sub-zones and are no longer qualified to attend the same school. Participation in this application period by students in other grade levels is optional.

Start new year healthy and stress free Courtesy of Lee Health Stress swarms us throughout the day. Did you grip and twist your steering wheel in traffic this morning? Dab your sweaty brow before the meeting? Did you notice your leg bouncing up and down as the afternoon wore on? Are your co-workers are commenting about how hard you are banging the keyboard? Do you feel irritable and ready to snap at someone? The reactions that stress ignites are so ingrained in our daily routines that you may not even notice them anymore. But it all adds up at the end of the day, and it all affects your health. Here are three quick things you can do during a busy work day to help feel better and breathe easier:

Stay mindful

Set an alarm on your phone to remind yourself to take stock of how you feel. Constant stress reactions don’t have to be just another part of your routine like a trip to the water cooler. When the alarm goes off, take five minutes to refocus and slow down. Think about your feet on the floor, recognize muscle tension in your shoulders, and unfurrow your brow. Just being aware of what your body is telling you can make you instantly feel better.

Just breathe

People may say this all the time – but, really, just try it. Stop what you are doing right now and take a deep breath. You don’t even have to get up from your chair — that email can wait for 30 seconds. Put your hand on your stomach and take it all in. Feel the rise your abdomen. Then let it go. You might be surprised at how much better you feel and how you might relax and settle

38 - January 2020

a little better into your chair. “You really want to focus on your breathing, taking four breaths in, maybe holding your breath for seven seconds, and then letting that breath out for eight strong seconds. You always want to make sure the exhale is longer and it just brings you to a place in your body that’s relaxing and you’re not so overwhelmed with the day to day stresses,” says Sarah Mitchell, a health and wellness coordinator with Lee Health.

Distract yourself

Get up and walk around for just five minutes. Visit the breakroom. Walk through the parking lot. Visit your buddy in the next office and ask him about his day. Plug

in your earphones and try an audiobook or your favorite music. Stand up straight wherever your walk, pull your shoulders back, and breathe. It all hits the reset button and helps you refocus. For the long term, exercise, nutrition, and sleep all play a vital role in keeping you stress free, according to Sarah Mitchell, a health and wellness coordinator with Lee Health. During the day be sure to minimize your sugar intake and drink plenty of water. “Diet plays a really big part because you can be reaching for things that are going to bring you up instantly to feel good to forget about the stress,” Mitchell says. Pilot program at two elementary schools

Lee Health, Lee County Schools collaborating to

combat mental health

The Lee County School Board has unanimously approved a proposal to integrate mental health navigators into two Lee County schools. Through a collaboration with Lee Health, this pilot program will help children and families at Ray V. Pottorf and Colonial elementary schools who are struggling with mental and behavioral health issues. The salaries for the two navigators are funded by Lee Health’s Kids’ Minds Matter initiative and Suncoast Credit Union. The goal of the program is to intervene as early as possible to help students receive the care they need as their young minds are rapidly developing. Students suffering with mental and behavioral health conditions often struggle to find the resources they need, not only for the lack of availability, but due to difficulties getting connected with the right doctors, therapists and counselors. A mental health navigator bridges that gap, and helps families find the right treatments, programs and support to address their children’s mental health needs. “I want to thank our partners, the School District of Lee County and Suncoast Credit Union for helping us

bring this important program to fruition. When we first asked the school district how we could help, they told us mental health navigators were the single most important thing they needed,” said Dr. Paul Simeone, vice president medical director of behavioral and mental health at Lee Health. To become a mental health navigator in the program, someone must have extensive experience working with a family member of their own who has suffered from mental or behavioral health conditions. This gives them hands-on experience in navigating the resources available and the personal knowledge of the empathy and patience required to care for someone with mental health disorders. “We are pleased to work with Lee Health to help fund this program that will greatly benefit Lee County’s students,” said Cindy Helton, executive director of the Suncoast Credit Union Foundation. “More and more children are struggling with their mental health in today’s fast-paced world, and we are honored to help them access the support they need to enjoy a brighter tomorrow.”

Free autism screening for young children Jan. 24 Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will be held on Jan. 24 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Healthy Life Center at Coconut Point, 23450 Via Coconut Point, Estero. It is estimated that one in every 59 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Family News

Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. The ASD screening is conducted by the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The screenings are administered by an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, who has extensive training and experience in typical child development and developmental disorders. A physician referral is not required. To schedule a screening, call 239-343-6838. January 2020 - 39
