Are new family fun adventures
calling your name in 2024? By Mandy Carter A new year gets me thinking about new places to go and new experiences to give my kids. But with a busy family schedule I like to stay realistic and plan nearby adventures. While some experiences are best done as an adult, some places have unique advantages of experiencing as both a child and an adult and then if you are lucky you get to add the unique advantage of also seeing it through the eyes of a child (if you know you know). Here is my list of weekend adventures I would like to plan with my family this year. You will see a bit of a theme; I hope the list provides some inspiration for your family’s 2024 adventures. Wander among life-sized dinosaurs Pack a picnic and explore Dinosaur World - a family-friendly outdoor museum located in Central Florida that features over 150 life-size dinosaur sculptures designed and created by Christer Svensson. Play in space and feel what it’s like to blast off Spend a day at the John F. Kennedy Space Center- NASA's primary launch center of human spaceflight. Lonestar to headline Everglades
Seafood Festival in February The Florida Stone Crabbers Association (FLSCA) will present the 54th annual Everglades Seafood Festival Feb. 2 – 4 at 102 Copeland Ave. North (just outside Everglades City Hall). The musical headliner for the 2024 event will be Lonestar. Not every musician has the opportunity to revisit and even potentially improve upon their biggest hits. But on the forthcoming Ten to 1 record, the award-winning band Lonestar— Dean Sams (keyboards, acoustic guitar, background vocals), Michael Britt (lead guitarist, background vocals), Keech Rainwater (drums) and Drew Womack (lead vocals, guitar)—are taking a fresh look at all 10 of their chart-topping country songs. This streak started in 1996 with the band's second single, the rock-edged "No News," and continued with the following year's "Come Cryin' to Me" and “Everything’s Changed.” The band's quadruple-platinum 1999 album Lonely Grill spawned four No. 1 hits (including the beloved global smash"Amazed") and established Lonestar as music's preeminent pop-country band—a status they maintained through the 2000s and beyond. 20 - January 2024
Schedule at a glance
Following is a summary of the festival entertainment:
Friday, Feb. 2, 4 – 10 p.m.
4:30 p.m.— Opening Ceremony, National Anthem 5 p.m. — Ayden Holt 6:15 p.m. — Florida Straits 7:40 p.m. — Pickle Money 9 p.m. — Collaboration Band
Saturday, Feb. 3 10 a.m. – 10 p.m.
11:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. — Opening Ceremony, National Anthem 12 – 1 p.m. — Gator Nate 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. — Little Jack 3 – 4 p.m. — Rock Republic 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. — Drew Baldridge 6 – 7:15 p.m. — Tuesday’s Gone (Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute) 8 – 9:30 p.m. — Lonestar
Sunday, Feb. 4, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
10 – 10:10 a.m. — National Anthem 10:05 – 10:35 a.m. — Chokoloskee Church 11a.m. – 12 p.m. — Sam Lowe 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. — Marron Chaplin 2 – 3 p.m. — Jack Shealy Band 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. — Charlie Pace 5 – 6 p.m. — Whey Jennings
With these re-recordings, the band members were mindful of striking a balance between preserving the sonic elements fans were familiar with— and not repeating them. Fittingly, TEN to 1 record reflects the ways Lonestar's hits have evolved over the years during the band's rousing, highenergy concerts. Such talent has contributed to the band winning many of music’s top honors, including Academy of Country Music Awards for New Vocal Group in 1996, Single and Song of The Year in 2000, along with Humanitarian of The Year in 2002. They also won the Country Music Association's Vocal Group of the Year and International Artist Achievement award in 2001. All told, Lonestar has sold more than 10.5 million records since its formation. Lonestar will perform Saturday, Feb. 3. Friday’s festival admission is a canned food donation. Saturday and Sunday adult admission is a $10 minimum donation. The annual family event also includes carnival rides, an array of seafood, a variety of beverages and creative works by local artisans. Mr. Tootsee McGootsee
Mr. Tootsee McGootsee is a timeless tale set in a charming town. In this town lives Mr. Tootsee McGootsee, a gentleman known not just for his impeccable style and polished shoes, but also for a rather peculiar issue that often leaves the townsfolk frustrated and mad. With a name as unforgettable as his, Mr. Tootsee's little "problem" is something he'd rather keep under wraps. However, as he navigates the bustling streets and lively parks, he realizes that sometimes, a toot can't be kept silent. Through perfectly timed rhyme, Mr. Tootsee McGootsee discovers that there's a time and place for everything, even for a little toot. This tale is not only a celebration of self-acceptance but also a reminder that laughter is, indeed, the best medicine.

The importance of vaccines for infants in today’s world By Dr. Nathan Landefeld Physicians’ Primary Care of Southwest Florida The latest scare tactic from the antivax movement is that infants today are getting "too many shots, too soon." I agree that it certainly does feel like a lot when I start listing the diseases we can protect your baby from with vaccines. They get 21 vaccines against 14 different diseases over the first two years of life! But, the unit of measurement used to measure "stress" on our immune system is not how many shots received. And, it's not even how many 42 - January 2024
diseases you are protecting against. The thing we need to count is an antigen. What is an antigen? An antigen is a molecule that your immune system can recognize, and to which it can make an immune response. If you are asking how much an immune system is "seeing," you would count the number of antigens to which you are exposed. When I was an infant, we had only four TV stations, and my pediatrician could use vaccines to protect me against just seven different diseases. The vaccines I received from birth to age two in 1971 and 1972 contained over 3,000 different antigens. (Vaccines were a bit crude and "sloppy" in the old days.) Today, we routinely use vaccines to protect our patients from 14 different childhood diseases in the first two years of life. So how many more antigens are they being exposed to today? Surprise.
It's not more, it's fewer. That's right, a baby today is exposed to just 320 antigens over the first two years of vaccines. This is because scientists have been able to make much more elegant, streamlined vaccines than 50 years ago. So the "too much, too soon" for our babies argument does not stand up to scientific scrutiny. We are protecting children against twice as many diseases, while exposing their immune systems to one-tenth the antigen. And, whether it was 1971 or 2023, the antigen exposure from vaccines is a drop in the ocean compared to the tens of thousands of antigens our immune system processes from everyday living. Nathan Landefeld, M.D., FAAP, is a board-certified pediatrician with Physicians’ Primary Care of Southwest Florida) with offices throughout Lee County. www.ppcswfl.com Family News

Play Hooky — Just Once!
Let’s be honest, evenings and the weekends are the only time you get to spend with your kids. A typical week can be filled with appointments, sports, dance, birthday parties and more. Just once, take a break and sneak away. No guilt, just fun! It’s OK! A “hooky” day just might be what you need to decompress from life’s craziness. Whether you just stay home in your pajamas, go see a movie or head to Disney, breaking the rules “together” can be so much fun!
Volunteer as a Family
Looking for an activity your whole family will enjoy? Volunteering may just be the answer. One of the best ways to show children how exciting and fun it is to help others is through volunteering. The rewards are endless. Start out by making a list of various ways that you want to help others throughout the year, and then construct a plan to make it happen. From participating in charity walks, fostering a pet, toy or food drives - there are so many wonderful possibilities to help make this world a better place.
Get Outside More
We know you are busy, but the benefits of outdoors and physical activity are endless! Whether it be walking, boating, biking or just exploring, the goal is to keep moving - outside. A great practice when embarking on your daily adventure is to track your progress by logging in and logging out. Try to increase your outside goals and then reward accordingly. Kids love to play games...make it a competition. Just like a video game let’s “level up!” It is time to get motivated as a family!
Nail Down a Fire Emergency Plan
Have a plan and practice - OFTEN. Communication is key. Teach your children when, how, and who to contact during an emergency. Make sure you know how every family member in your household (including your pets!) would stay safe in case of a fire. For instance, pick a meeting spot a safe distance away from your home and know possible escape routes based on different fire location scenarios. (kitchen, second floor, etc.) Does your child know how to bang out a screen or simply open a window? Also, it may be great that you own a fire extinguisher but has every family member actually used one? During an emergency is not the best time to learn new skill sets. The objective is to practice, not to frighten...the more it becomes a family routine the less frightening it will become for everyone. 46 - January 2024
Make Gratitude Your Attitude
It’s about choice. More importantly - the right choice. Despite the negative things that are happening in the world today, it is essential that we create a conscious mindset to embrace a thankful heart. Cultivating gratitude may take time and intention due to life’s challenges and setbacks but embracing compassion, kindness, forgiveness and empathy is like life changing medicine for the soul. Let us all find ways to be grateful every day so we may experience more joy and fulfillment in our individual lives. Watch out... it just may be contagious!
Family Game Night
If you feed them, they will come! Food always makes it easier to spend time together as a family! So why not add another awesome element to the evening - games! Having a regular family game night can be a great tradition to help strengthen the family unit. Now for the tough part, you must convince your kids that they will have a good time without being glued to their electronics. Not an easy task! Simple rule...put the devices down or no food. Let’s escape from the stresses of life and engage as a family unit Plus, with the right game ot two, it can be actually quite entertaining.
Start a Family Side Business
Starting a business can bring family members closer and allow you to create something together as a unit. How many times have your heard “How can I get a job without experience?” It is never too early to build your child’s resume. A family business can create wonderful income and opportunities, along with building a special legacy for our children. Whether it be online flipping, pet care, art or a digital storefront, a family business is a terrific way to make money and spend time together.
Get Unplugged
It is time to get back to basics! Turning off all devices is a clear way of saying to each other that they are a top priority. All the distractions of this world can wait. These days, we spend so much time with a screen in front of us for work and play that we have forgotten how to walk away. When was the last time you and your family spent a day unplugged? Ditch the gadgets and put into place a list of alternative activities. Cook together! Talk together! Just have fun together! As a family, it is time to hit the pause button... and look up! Family News
