Voluntary Prekindergarten extended to some 5 year olds

Florida’s Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) law has been on the books for ten years. The program offers all Florida 4 year olds 540 hours per school year or 300 hours per summer of free high quality preschool. These programs smooth the way into the kindergarten years by making sure children have the best start possible as they begin to learn in a more formal setting. Traditionally, free VPK has been offered to children who turn 4 on or before Sept. 1 of any given year. But birth date can be a liability for some. “Some children born mid-year are very young 4-year-olds by the time Sept. 1 rolls around. They may not be ready for the VPK experience. That difference in maturity lev-

els has now been addressed with these changes to the VPK rules,” says Gayla Thompson, chief quality officer for the Early Learning Coalition of Southwest Florida. The change extends VPK eligibility for 4 year olds whose birthdays fall from Feb. 2 through Sept. 1 in a calendar year. Parents can opt to enroll their child during that year, or wait until the next—when their child is five. The new law takes effect July 1. Parents may register their 5-year-old child who meets the criteria for VPK through the Florida Office of Early Learning’s Family Portal at www.familyservices.floridaearlylearning.com beginning July 1.

Maranatha Dance has been serving the area for more than 25 years and the owners thank the community for its ongoing support. They are excited to announce that Maranatha Dance will be operating under a new name: Maranatha School of Dance and the Arts. In addition to the dance programs, Maranatha will now offer classes for fine art, theatre and music. They will also be offering a new art-based Mommy and Me class for ages 2-5. Maranatha is kicking off this new expansion with its Masterpiece Arts Camp (July 11-15) where children age 7 and up can experience elements of music, theatre and art rolled into one week. At Maranatha, they promise that you will

find passionate, caring, and qualified teachers who will nurture your child's developing skills in a Christ-centered environment. Save the date for their fall open houses on Aug. 4th (6 - 8 p.m.) and Aug. 6 (10 a.m. noon). Maranatha School of Dance and the Arts is located at 822 Del Prado Blvd #110, Cape Coral. Breastfeeding curtails risk of obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol and more Made up of the perfect combination of proteins, fats, vitamins and carbohydrates, breast milk is the healthiest choice for babies. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics encourages mothers to exclusively breastfeed for the first 6 months of life, and to continue breastfeeding until the child is at least 1 year of age. “There is a high prevalence of childhood obesity, and that is a public health challenge,” says Pierre Loredo, M.D., pediatrician. “Studies have found that breastfeeding curtails the risk of obesity, as well as other conditions associated with excess weight, including type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and hypertension.”

40

JULY 2016

Dr. Loredo adds that there isn’t magic found in breast milk. “It is just that there is only a certain amount of milk that a mom can produce every day,” he says. “With formula, there is a relatively infinite supply, so portion control is a big part of this.” The introduction of solid foods also impacts obesity. “The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends introducing solid food—which should include a variety of healthy foods, like fruits and vegetables and a variety of textures—around 6 months of age,” Dr. Loredo says. “Really, introducing solids between 4-6 months of age is ideal because the risk of food allergies decreases. But, introducing food before 4 months of

age increases the risk of obesity.” Dr. Loredo says it is important for mothers who cannot breastfeed, or for those mothers who cannot produce enough milk and must supplement with formula, to maintain regular appointments with the pediatrician to monitor the baby’s weight gain trajectory. Lee Memorial Health System offers breastfeeding classes and support groups. Both include the services of board certified lactation consultants. The BFG

The Secret Life of Pets

Ice Age - Collision Course

Opening July 1 - rated PG

Opening July 8 - rated PG

Opening July 22 - rated PG

Directed by Spielberg, Disney’s The BFG tells the imaginative story of a young girl and the Giant who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country. The BFG (Mark Rylance), while a giant himself, is a Big Friendly Giant and nothing like the other inhabitants of Giant Country. Standing 24-feet tall with enormous ears and a keen sense of smell, he is endearingly dim-witted and keeps to himself for the most part. Giants like Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement) on the other hand, are twice as big and at least twice as scary and have been known to eat humans, while the BFG prefers Snozzcumber and Frobscottle. Upon her arrival in Giant Country, Sophie, a precocious 10-year-old girl from London, is initially frightened of the mysterious giant who has brought her to his cave, but soon comes to realize that the BFG is actually quite gentle and charming, and, having never met a giant before, has many questions.

Max (Louis C.K.) is a spoiled terrier who enjoys a comfortable life in a New York building until his owner adopts Duke, a giant and unruly canine. During their walk outside, they encounter a group of ferocious alley cats and wind up in a truck that's bound for the pound. Luckily, a rebellious rabbit named Snowball swoops in to save the doggy duo from captivity. In exchange, Snowball demands that Max and Duke join his gang of abandoned pets on a mission against the humans who've done them wrong. Other stars include Eric Stonestreet, Kevin Hart, Jenny Slate, Ellie Kemper, Lake Bell, Dana Carvey, Hannibal Buress, Bobby Moynihan, Steve Coogan and Albert Brooks. The Secret Life of Pets is a comedy about the lives of our pets after we leave for work or school each day.

Scrat's epic pursuit of the elusive acorn catapults him into the universe where he accidentally sets off a series of cosmic events that transform and threaten the Ice Age World. To save themselves, Sid, Manny, Diego, and the rest of the herd must leave their home and embark on a quest full of comedy and adventure, traveling to exotic new lands and encountering a host of colorful new characters. Ice Age Collision Course stars Ray Romano, Denis Leary, John Leguizamo, Queen Latifah, Seann William Scott, Josh Peck, Simon Pegg, Keke Palmer, Wanda Sykes, and Jennifer Lopez. Also starring Stephanie Beatriz, Adam DeVine, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Max Greenfield, Jessie J, Nick Offerman, Melissa Rauch, Michael Strahan, Neil de Grasse Tyson.
