SW Florida staycation with the kids on Captiva Island By Mandy Carter
No need to travel out of Southwest Florida to have a great family getaway. Just take a drive to the tip of Captiva island to the South Seas Island Resort. The resort sits on a 330-acre wildlife preserve, occupying the last two and a half miles of the island. It is the ideal place to get away from the daily hustle of everyday life and make some family memories. When I asked my 4 year old daughter, Kara, her favorite part of the getaway, she gave these three things:
Scout About:
Pick up a ScoutAbout map from the front desk, bring your camera and take an scavenger hunt adventure around the island. This creative map gives you 15 “Points of Discovery,” from dolphins to sunsets. When you collect all 15 wristbands, you can become an official ScoutAbout member, and earn a spot on the ScoutAbout Wall of Fame. Some of the best memories are those made when you give your child the opportunity to explore nature.
Camp Skullywags
Camp Skullywags is so much more than just a way to keep the kids entertained for an hour or so. This activity programs give kids ages 3-11 a chance for under sea explorations, mad science experiments, whacky sports and more.
The Food
Captiva has some great local dining. However, there are a number of restaurants at the hotel, so if you don’t want to leave the property once you arrive there is no need. Kara loved the food from breakfast at Harbourside Bar and Grill to snacks at Crooked Snook Tiki bar, she filled up on some island food. And her absolute favorite was eating pizza at Scoops & Slices because she got to pick out a bag a candy for dessert.
8 - July 2018
And though my daughter didn’t mention it, she had a blast at the hotel pools! Which I must say topped my list of favorite things at the resort because it gave me a chance to soak up the island life while she played! It truly is a fun SWFL staycation that even the little ones enjoy!

A is for Applebee’s
One way that Applebee’s and Doherty Enterprises, the local franchisee in Lee County, supports education in the community yearround is through its “A is for Applebee's” program, which was created for teachers, libraries and scout leaders to use as an incenfor children to succeed and be rewarded. The program gives program for kids tive children an incentive to go the “extra mile,” and examples include doing well on a test, helping a classmate, reading more books, field day giveaways, making the Honor Roll – or to provide a small reward to give them for any reason at all. By obtaining the certificate from Applebee’s, children gain a sense of accomplishment. The incentive reward, a free ice cream sundae, can be given to kids age 18 and under. For more information about the “A for Applebee’s” Program, visit www.dohertyinc.com/youth-connection * Correction to incentive program published in June’s Lee County Family News magazine

Is your child snoring?
Obstructive sleep apnea happens to children, too By Clay Luz, Lee Health Until earlier this year, 7-year-old Katie Cala Martinez snored when she slept. In the morning, she’d awake feeling tired, leading to concentration problems at school. “She’d also choke on her food while eating,” recalls Katie’s mother, Yusimi Martinez- Ayala. “Although Katie was tired from not sleeping at night, she was hyperactive during the day. She tossed a lot in bed when she slept.” Sleep specialist Tracy Carbone, M.D., says snoring is not a condition restricted to adults. “If your child snores, it could be a sign he or she suffers from obstructive sleep apnea,” Dr. Carbone says.” Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can also affect babies and infants, she adds. Obstructive sleep apnea is a breathing disorder in which a person repeatedly starts and stops breathing during sleep. “It happens when the muscles relax during sleep, causing soft tissue in the back of the nose and throat to collapse inward and block the upper airway,” Dr. Carbone explains. When Yusimi brought Katie to Dr. Carbone for evaluation, Katie’s symptoms suggested obstructive sleep apnea. Dr. Carbone ordered a comprehensive diagnostic test that consisted of an overnight sleep study at the Pediatric 48 - July 2018
Katie Cala Martinez had her sleep apnea successfully treated at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. Yusimi Martinez-Ayala says her daughter, 7, sleeps soundly now.
Sleep Center at HealthPark, adjacent to the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. During a sleep study, technicians attach small sensors to the child’s body using a mild adhesive or tape. A computer reads the sensors and then provides information about the child’s sleep quality and habits. The studies are painless and risk-free. The study confirmed Dr. Carbone’s suspicion. Katie had obstructive sleep apnea due to adenoids and tonsils leading to blockages of Katie’s upper airway during sleep. She was referred to an ear, nose, and throat specialist to discuss surgery. Last March, Katie underwent an adenotonsillectomy (an operation to remove the adenoids and tonsils) at Golisano Children’s Hospital. “Katie sleeps like a baby now,” Yusimi says. “And she can concentrate more in school because she’s finally getting the sleep she needs.” Dr. Carbone urges parents to monitor their child’s sleep habits. Lack of optimal quality sleep affects mental health, academic performance, peer and parent relations, immune system function, and overall health, she says. “Children who get enough sleep have a lower chance of being overweight, get better grades, and have an overall better quality of life,” Dr. Carbone says.
