Take a botanical adventure

By Mandy Carter Heading out on a trip to the botanical gardens can be a fun and exciting way for a family to spend a day, but you need to do some planning to ensure it is a success. Some parents try to wing it, and inevitably spend the day thinking about “I wish” moments that would have made the day easier. The botanical gardens are meant to be enjoyed, so take the time to consider some things ahead of time. Here are my top two tips to help you get the most out of your trip.

Here is my list of our favorite gardens in Florida, so you can start crafting your own family garden getaways:

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

811 S Palm Ave., Sarasota 941- 366-5731 selby.org

Bok Tower Gardens

1151 Tower Blvd., Lake Wales 863-676-1408 Boktowergardens.org

Create excitement about the plants

Naples Botanical Garden

4820 Bayshore Drive, Naples 239-643-7275 naplesgarden.org

You can create excitement by sharing some of the facts about plants. A good example of this would be their defense systems. For example, some plants have thorns to protect them while others excrete toxic chemicals. It’s a good idea to research the plants you will be seeing so that you have some details to share with your children. Kids are naturally fascinated by things like this.

Morikami Museum & Japanese Gardens

4000 Morikami Park Road, Delray Beach 561-495-0233 morikami.org

Find the children’s garden first

Most botanical gardens have areas just for kids; locate this area first. These areas allow the children to enjoy a hands on experience so that they can better enjoy the gardens. This experience is also a learning one, so parents are as satisfied as children are by it. The important thing is to have fun at the botanical gardens with your kids. You may be able to create a lifelong learner when it comes to plant life. You may even be able to show your indoor-loving child that there are wonders to see if he or she is only willing to step outside the front door.

Patients connected, saved by blood Although Randy Ramos and Lillian Ramos have identical last names, they are not related by blood — but they are connected by it. Randy, 8, and Lillian, 7, were diagnosed with the same form of leukemia in 2017: acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), also called lymphoblastic or lymphoid, a type that accounts for most childhood leukemias. The other two main types of leukemia in children are acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). As part of their leukemia treatments, the children receive blood transfusions at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. “Leukemia is a type of blood cancer that begins in the bone marrow,” says pediatric hematology-oncology specialist Craig MacArthur, M.D., who treats both Randy and Lillian. “When a child has leukemia, the bone marrow produces white blood cells that don’t mature correctly. These immature cells reproduce themselves and crowd out the normal healthy cells. When this happens, a child experiences the symptoms of leukemia.” Almost all patients with leukemia require a blood transfusion during their treatment. Susie Nystrom, director of Lee Health Blood Center, says the blood centers require about 2,000 units of blood a month. “Blood has a relatively short shelf life of about 42 days, so we need to replenish it often,” she says. “Our blood is safe. We screen for the Zika virus, as well as infectious diseases. Donating is safe and it’s a good way to help the community.” After Randy’s diagnosis, his mother, Jezabel Carida Lima brought him to Golisano Children’s Hospital four times a week for his blood transfusions. Now in remission, Randy goes once every two weeks or when his blood Lillian Ramos, 7, was diagnosed in 2017 count is low. with acute lymphocytic leukemia.

46 - July 2019

“We are very grateful to the blood center, the doctors, and the nurses at Golisano Children’s Hospital,” Jezabel says. “They made us feel very welcome.” She says Randy has two more years of chemotherapy treatment, which she administers as a liquid to him once a week at their Cape Coral home. Like Randy, Lillian is currently in remission. Her mother, Amanda Gardner, administers Lillian’s Randy Ramos, 8, is “doing pretty good,” says Jezabel chemotherapy treatment as Carida Lima, who photographed her son at San Carlos a pill once a week at their Bay, Bunche Beach Preserve. Fort Myers home. “It has been a challenge,” says Amanda. “The doctors and nurses at Golisano Children’s Hospital have made it much easier. Everyone has made us feel like a family. Dr. MacArthur is someone you can tell loves his job. It’s been an amazing journey.” Lillian started a Facebook page detailing her health care journey. To follow along, visit www.facebook.com/lillysleukemiajourney Donors may give blood if they meet the following criteria: • Weigh at least 115 pounds • Age 17 or older, 16 with parental consent • Are healthy and feel well • First-time donors must have positive identification photo The Lee Health Blood Centers supply blood to Cape Coral Hospital, Gulf Coast Medical Center, HealthPark Medical Center, Lee Memorial Hospital, Golisano Children’s Hospital, the Rehabilitation Hospital, the Regional Cancer Center, and Lee Health Coconut Point. Summer heat poses danger to kids in cars The summer season is in full swing across Southwest Florida, which means the sun is shining and temperatures are on the rise. This extra sunlight and heat can make cars left outside into death traps in just a few minutes. Temperatures inside a vehicle can soar to 175 degrees under Florida’s blistering sun and a child can experience a debilitating heatstroke or worse within minutes of being left in a vehicle. Heatstroke occurs when the body isn’t able to cool itself rapidly enough. A child’s body heats up three to five times faster than adult’s, making them more vulnerable to heatstroke. Major organs begin to shut down when a child’s internal temperature reaches 104 degrees and when that temperature reaches 107 degrees, the child can die. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, 2018 was the deadliest year on record for hot car deaths among children in the United States with 58. There have been 13 deaths so far in 2019. “These kinds of tragedies are 100 percent preventable,” said

Sally Kreuscher, Safe Kids coordinator at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. “Simple steps and reminders can go a long way toward keeping children safe, whether you’re a parent, caregiver or concerned bystander, you can help save lives.” Kreuscher recommends some simple steps to prevent a tragedy: • Never leave your child alone in a car, even for a minute. • Create reminders by putting something in the back of your car next to your child, such as a purse, briefcase or cell phone that you need at your destination. This is particularly important if you’re not following your normal routine. • Keep your car locked when you’re not in it so kids don’t find their way in on their own. • Call 911 if you see a child alone in a car. Emergency personnel are trained to respond to these situations and your call could save a life.

Autism screening for young children July 26 Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will be held on Friday, July 26 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the IMAG History & Science Center, 2000 Cranford Ave., Fort Myers. It is estimated that one in every 68 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making

it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. A physician referral is not required. Appointments are not necessary, but parents are encouraged to call 239-3436838 to schedule or obtain more information.
