June 20 – July 29 Registration has started for the 2016 Summer Camp at Lee County Parks & Recreation. These camps draw thousands of youngsters throughout the region to programs, outings and activities at the department’s traditional camps, teen camps and specialty camps. Don’t procrastinate – each year, the spots at Wa-Ke Hatchee, Lakes Regional Park and Estero Recreation Center fill up well before the mercury throbs and the kids are out of school. Summer camp runs six weeks – from June 20 through July 29. If you plan to register for camp at one of the four major recreation centers, you need to obtain a facility membership first. This applies to Wa-Ke Hatchee, Estero, North Fort Myers or Veterans Park in Lehigh Acres. This year again, people who register at least two weeks before the first day of the session for which they sign up will receive an early registration discount. For example, the price of traditional camp would be $70 instead of $75. Outdoor specialty camps this year will cost $75 (except for Boca Grande, which is $100). Parents interested in swimming lessons can also register now. Those lessons and other summer aquatics programs are available at the county’s four year-round community pools located in Lehigh Acres, North Fort Myers, Pine Island and San Carlos Park. To register, visit your nearest community pool or online. www.LeeParks.org 239-533-7275

To make the legs, tail and ears, use a knife to slice off the crust portion. To make the legs and ears, use the bread crust from the bottom. Take the body portion, slice the buns half way through lengthwise and fill with the hot dog and lettuce. Assemble the head and ears, you can secure the parts using pasta sticks. Use pasta sticks to secure the ears, since this is to be placed on a table of eating, the head portion won't shift. Assemble the legs by placing them under the hot dog bun. Using a round cutter, cut out cheese for the eyes. Using a pair of scissors, cut out the eyes and eyebrows from Nori. Fold Nori in half before cutting, that way you will get a pair of the cut-outs. If needed, use some mayonnaise to "stick" the cut-outs onto the bread buns. Using a round cutter, cut out ham for the cheeks. I used half an olive for the nose. Attach them onto the bread buns using pasta sticks or you can also use mayonnaise to "stick" them on. Squeeze out ketchup and mustard on the hot tog before serving.

Line up 3 slices of french bread (best if the bread is not completely sliced through), spread mayonnaise between slices. Place spiked cheese & turkey between slices. Cut hot dog in small pieces for the feet, Roll a piece of ham up for the face. Slice black olives in half. Make small hole to thread point of the lunch meat through. Use small pieces of olive for eyes and mouth.

EKGs for young athletes may detect risk for sudden cardiac death Sports teach young athletes a variety of life lessons, including discipline, teamwork, goal-setting and time management, among other values. While participating in sports keeps children active and healthy, there are rare instances when a young athlete dies because of sudden cardiac death. Sudden cardiac death is the result of unexpected, unrecognized heart disease. “There are several conditions that can lead to these unfortunate deaths in young athletes,” explains Suying Lam, M.D., pediatric cardiologist. “A few examples include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy—a condition in which the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick; long QT syndrome—a heart rhythm disorder that can potentially cause fast, chaotic heartbeats; and Wolff-Parkinson-White—which is an extra electrical pathway in the heart that causes a rapid heartbeat. In many cases these heart conditions provide no

advance signs or symptoms.” Physical exams and reviews of family health history are important, but there also is a tool—an electrocardiogram (EKG)—that may detect a child’s risk for sudden cardiac death. “Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida is proud to offer free EKGs to middle and high school-aged athletes,” Dr. Lam says. “This cardiovascular screening initiative is intended to prospectively identify or raise suspicion of previously unrecognized underlying heart conditions known to cause sudden cardiac death in young people. This screening is not meant to replace routine sports physicals and clearance for these student athletes. Instead it provides an extra layer of prevention that all kids deserve.” Dr. Lam says the EKG is performed by placing 10 stickers and wires on the chest, arms and legs in order to evalu-

ate the electrical activity of the heart. “The test is painless and takes about 5 minutes,” she says. “Dr. Eric Eason, pediatric cardiologist, and I will review all of the EKGs and, if necessary, provide recommendations for further evaluations.” The free EKGs are available without an appointment, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday at these two locations: Outpatient Center at HealthPark Commons 16281 Bass Road, Fort Myers Outpatient Center at the Sanctuary 8960 Colonial Center Drive, Fort Myers Parents and/or legal guardians must be present and sign an acknowledgement and intake form.

Protect your child’s eyes from summer sun

By Dr. Heather Trapheagen Summertime is here. Children need sun protection from harmful ultra-violet (UV) rays just as much, if not more, than adults. Sunglasses, whether prescription or non-prescription, should have 100% UVA and UVB protection. Most eyeglass lenses for children are made with polycarbonate lenses which are naturally UV resistant. Transitions, lenses that darken in the sun and are clear indoors, are a great option for children and adults. Having Transition® lenses in your child’s eyeglasses gives him or her that extra protection and tint,

without the cost of an extra pair of sunglasses. Also, there is one less pair for your child to misplace. Please be sure to protect your child’s eye health with yearly exams and sun protection! Kids can also get extra protection in the sun by wearing a hat with a brim to block that harsh light. If you have any questions regarding your child’s eyes or vision, Full Spectrum Family Vision Care will happily answer your concerns. Call to schedule an appointment with Dr. Heather Trapheagen at 573-EYES (3937). Most insurances are accepted.

Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will be held on June 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Family Health Center, 2256 Heitman St., Fort Myers. Finding Dory

Now playing - rated PG

Opens June 17 - rated PG

In Disney’s Alice Through the Looking Glass, an all-new spectacular adventure featuring the unforgettable characters from Lewis Carroll’s beloved stories, Alice (Mia Wasikowska) returns to the whimsical world of Underland and travels back in time to save the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp). When Alice wakes up in Wonderland she must travel through a mysterious new world to retrieve a magical scepter that can stop the evil Lord of Time before he turns forward the clock and turns Wonderland into a barren, lifeless old world. With the help of some new friends, Alice must also uncover an evil plot to put the Queen of Hearts back on the throne.

Disney/Pixar's Finding Dory welcomes back to the big screen everyone's favorite forgetful blue tang Dory (voice of Ellen DeGeneres), who’s living happily in the reef with Nemo (voice of Hayden Rolence) and Marlin (voice of Albert Brooks). When Dory suddenly remembers that she has a family out there who may be looking for her, the trio takes off on a life-changing adventure across the ocean to California's prestigious Marine Life Institute, a rehabilitation center and aquarium. In an effort to find her mom (voice of Diane Keaton) and dad (voice of Eugene Levy), Dory enlists the help of three of the MLI’s most intriguing residents: Hank (voice of Ed O'Neill), a cantankerous octopus who frequently gives employees the slip; Bailey (voice of Ty Burrell), a beluga whale who is convinced his echolocation skills are on the fritz; and Destiny (voice of Kaitlin Olson), a nearsighted whale shark. Deftly navigating the complex inner workings of the MLI, Dory and her friends discover the magic within their flaws, friendships and family.

Calendar art contest winners announced

Keep Lee County Beautiful, Inc. has announced the winners in the 27th annual "Leave The Scene Clean" Calendar Art Contest. The contest drew thousands of entries from local students, representing public, private and home schools in Lee County. Submitted work was judged on artistic execution and originality as well as environmental theme, such as litter prevention, recycling, community cleanup and protecting the environment. The 12 first place selections, one from each grade 1 through 12, in addition to the cover winner, are featured in KLCB's full color 2017 "Leave The Scene Clean" calendar. Also selected were Honorable Mentions in each grade. KLCB will host an awards ceremony at the Broadway Palm Theatre this fall (the event is free and open to the public) at which time the artwork will be exhibited, the calendar will be released, and the winners will receive their awards. The cover winner and senior winner will each be presented with a $500 cash scholarship courtesy of Covanta Energy. Each calendar month contains a different student work of art. The back cover will feature an environmental message by North Fort Myers High School student Gabriela Castellanos, the 2017 cover winner. Other Lee County public school first place winners include Yasmin Calmo, Ryann Kearney, Gracie Groll, Abby Vick, Lauren McKirahan, Stephanie Dickey, Tricia Shamburger and Zailyk Diaz. These popular full color calendars can be had for a $3 donation each and are available through select Goodwill stores and participating Lee County Schools, who retain all proceeds collected with the funds being used to pay for environmental projects at the participating school. For more information about this and other KLCB educational programs call 334-3488.
