Plan a budget friendly trip to The Palm Beaches with the kids

By Mandy Carter

You may not think of Palm Beach as a destination for young children, but my preschooler and I found lots of fun, lowcost ways to stay not only entertained, but learn through the unique attractions that this beautiful Florida destination offers. First, save money on food by staying at Palm Beach Marriott Singer Island Beach Resort & Spa. It’s a beachfront, condominium style hotel with

spacious 2-3 bedroom accommodations offering living space, a full kitchen and laundry. Then spend a couple of hours throughout your trip enjoying the free attractions listed below.

Loggerhead Marinelife Center

Loggerhead Marinelife Center is an ocean conservation organization and sea turtle rehabilitation hospital located in Juno Beach. This area of Palm Beach is one of the most denselynested loggerhead turtle nesting beaches in the world. The Loggerhead Marinelife Center is free for all ages and provides an up-close interaction with threatened and endangered sea turtles. Gumbo Limbo Nature Center

Learn about the different South Florida marine habitats in the outdoor aquariums. Go for a walk down the boardwalk through a preserved Hardwood Hammock, explore the Ashley Trail and visit the Butterfly Garden, which is in full bloom during June.

Manatee Lagoon

Manatee Lagoon is an FPL Eco-Discovery Center, offering free admission for all visitors. The center provides engaging opportunities to learn about manatees and how we can protect Florida’s wildlife. Dynamic exhibits offer insight into South Florida’s coastal ecosystem. On cold days during the winter months, Manatee Lagoon is the ideal spot to view wild manatee herds

NEWS FROM OUR MAGAZINE PARTNERS Fort Myers earns Playful City USA designation for six straight years

Leaderhip Night at Gateway Charter

For the sixth consecutive year, the City of Fort Myers has earned designation as a Playful City USA. National non-profit KaBOOM honors cities and towns across the country for putting the needs of kids and families first so kids can learn, grow and develop important life skills. These communities are transforming ordinary places into playful spaces and using play as a solution to the challenges facing their residents. The 2017 Playful City USA recognition includes 258 communities from Richmond, Virginia to Richmond, California that make it as easy as possible for kids to play. In total, these communities feature more than 14,000 safe and engaging play spaces that serve more than four million kids. The State of Florida boasts the most Playful City USA communities; however Fort Myers is the only recipient in the Southwest Florida region. Fort Myers’ kids initiatives include the S.T.A.R.S. (Success Through Academic and Recreational Support) program, S.T.A.R.S. recreational summer camp, and the recreation’s department’s Junior NBA program, presented in collaboration with the Police Athletic League. The city also installed a new playground at Jefferson Park in 2016. Playful City USA honorees are taking bold action to ensure kids have great places to play – all with the ultimate goal of making play the easy choice for all kids, no matter where they live. In addition to the playground down the street, Playful City USA communities are turning grocery stores, vacant lots, crosswalks and sidewalks into opportunities for play. “We are thrilled to recognize Fort Myers for putting kids first,” said KaBOOM! CEO James Siegal. “The well-being of our communities starts with the well-being of our kids, and play is critical for them to thrive. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that all kids get the childhood they deserve filled with play.”

Gateway Charter School in Fort Myers hosted its first annual K-8 Leadership Night on May 18. Gateway Charter School is a Leader in Me school and they are working to Empower Lifelong Learners and Leaders. Students showcased what they have learned about leadership and have been working hard to become better leaders.

Every year thousands of kids receive free backpacks and school supplies while celebrating diversity in our community. Admission is free to this festival event, which has become the largest back-to-school outreach program in Lee County. In advance of the Big Backpack Event, community members are invited to participate in the Adopt-A-Student fundraiser. Each $10 donation provides a student with a new backpack and school supplies that include notebook paper, folders, crayons, glue, pencils and pens. For the past 17 years the Multicultural Centre of

Southwest Florida has been hosting this popular community outreach event that to date has provided new backpacks and school supplies to more than 35,000 students. The event lends a helping hand to students and families in need, while celebrating the diversity in Southwest Florida with live multicultural entertainment on the main stage including hip hop, Irish step dance, salsa and more. The first 2,000 or more children age 5-12 will receive free backpacks and school supplies or while supplies last. Children must be present with a parent or guardian to receive free supplies. Families will enjoy other event festivities such as face painting, inflatables, clowns and live entertainment. Is your child color blind? By Dr Heather Trapheagen "Color blindness,"or color vision deficiency, is the inability to distinguish certain shades of color. In severe cases, there is an inability to see colors at all, but very few people are completely color blind. Most people with color vision deficiency can see colors, but they have difficulty telling the difference between shades of reds and greens (most common) or blues and yellows (less common). Red-green color deficiency is the most common deficiency and is most commonly seen in males. About 8% of males are color blind,

compared to 0.5% of females. At this time, there is no treatment for color deficiency. It is helpful to know if your child is color blind, so that you can let the school and teachers know for certain learning activities. Certain occupations may also be difficult in the future for children diagnosed with a color deficiency. A simple test can be done during your child’s eye exam to determine color deficiency. Call Dr. Heather Trapheagen at 239-573-3937 if you would like to schedule your child’s yearly eye exam. Many insurances accepted.

Autism screening for young children June 9 in Fort Myers

Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will be held on June 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Family Health Center, 2256 Heitman St. (and Grand Avenue) in Fort Myers. It is estimated that one in every 68 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more

common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. The ASD screening is conducted by the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. A physician referral is not required. To schedule a screening, call 239343-6838.

Keep your kids safe this summer

Summer fun brings an abundance of sun and sea activities for the family. To ensure a safe and memorable summer, parents should learn ways to protect their children. Sally Kreuscher, a child advocate with Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, says preventable injuries are the number one killer of kids in the United States. “One of the first things related to safety that we see during the onset of summer is an uptick of water accidents and nonfatal drownings,” Sally says. “Too often at family functions we assume everyone around the pool is watching the kids. We recommend you designate someone as a ‘water watcher’—a person, preferably an adult, who accepts responsibility for watching the children.” Sally also is coordinator of Safe Kids Southwest Florida, a coalition of more than 80 health and safety agencies and experts. Led by Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, the cooperative implements community programs such as car-seat checkups, safety workshops and sports clinics. As for water safety, there’s more to it than just choosing someone as a ‘water watcher,’ Sally says. She’s referring to ‘learning your ABCs’, which are three simple steps parents and caregivers can take to reduce the risk of a drowning accident. The three steps are: adult supervision, barriers and CPR. To learn more about the ABCs of

water safety, visitors can go online and access the SafeKids’ website. Car safety is another important area of safety concern during the summer, says Brenda Hernandez, a child advocate with Golisano Children’s Hospital. Leaving a child alone in a car can lead to serious injury or death from heatstroke. Young children are particularly at risk because their bodies heat up three-to-five times faster than an adult’s. As with water accidents, these tragedies are mostly preventable. “Parents need to set-up a system where you have something on the passenger seat or something on your car key ring to remind you to check the car everywhere, especially the back seat, to make sure you haven’t left a child inside the car.” That’s just one tip among many that may save a child’s life or prevent an injury, Brenda says. Choosing the right car seat for your child is important too, she adds. When installed and used correctly, child safety seats can reduce fatal injury by as much as 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers. At Golisano Children’s Hospital, parents can schedule a car seat appointment with a bilingual child passenger safety technician to learn how to properly install child safety seats, and learn safety precautions, too. To learn more about how to protect your kids while they are on the move, at home and at play, visit Safekids.org.

New Fast Pass visitor IDs

Visitors to HealthPark Medical Center and Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida will encounter a change when they enter the hospitals starting in May. To enhance security, a Fast Pass identification system is being installed at the public entrances. Visitors will be required to show state issued I.D. or passport and will be issued a photo name badge to wear while in the hospitals. Fast Pass is an identification system that rapidly prints an adhesive photo badge. Lee Memorial Hospital and Gulf Coast Medical Center currently use the Fast Pass system, and similar systems are often used in school systems and by cruise lines. “We continually evaluate our security protocols to provide the safest environment possible for our patients and visitors,” says Steve Marz, director of security. The badges are each good for just one day.

Southwest Florida girls to compete in prestigious world dance championship

Watching 15 Fort Myers teens perform their high energy, logic-defying and award-winning dance routine is guaranteed to leave one both exhilarated and exhausted. Following nearly a year of rehearsals, the talented teens’ hard work has paid off as they leaped and twirled their way to win the coveted “golden ticket” in Orlando recently at the prestigious Starpower regional dance competition. By edging out dozens of teams from across the state with their precision, power and grace, they have earned a “once in a lifetime opportunity” to compete against teams from across the globe in the World Dance Championships to be held Aug. 4 in Meadowlands, N.J., and simulcast live. All students at Tracee’s Dance Impact in Fort Myers, the girls have mastered an original, highly emotional lyrical dance routine called Via Dolorosa. At times it is challenging to tell where one dancer ends and the next begins as the troupe effortlessly flows through movements together to relay a passionate expression of the sacrifices Jesus made for his followers. The dance challenges one to view the

story in a new and more meaningful light. “The vision for Via Dolorosa came to me one day as a saw the entire number in my mind and even knew which girl would play which part. As we continued rehearsing, the dance evolved into a comfortable, awe-inspiring routine that flows seamlessly and exhibits bold strength,” said choreographer Kristin Martorelli, a Cape Coral native who began dancing at age six and has taught at the studio for four years. For studio owner Tracee Brann, the opportunity to have a local troupe compete in a global competition is just one in a series of impressive accomplishments. She has taught dance in Southwest Florida since 1998, in Naples, Marco Island and Fort Myers, and has a well-deserved reputation for inspiring girls to be the best that they can be in all facets of life through her faith-based approach to artistic expression. The dancers are raising $15,000 to pay for travel and other expenses and have launched a campaign page for donations. Tracee’s Dance Impact is located in South Fort Myers.
