Discovery Cove By Mandy Carter Discovery Cove is a unique, all inclusive Orlando attraction with animal encounters in a relaxing tropical oasis. It looks and sounds fantastic, but with tickets starting at $150 per person for Florida residents, I have always wondered if the experience is worth the price tag. I recently had the chance to spend a day at Discovery Cove and answer the ever popular question.

Ticket Price

For me, yes it is worth the cost. However, if I were planning to take the kiddos I would wait until they are in their tweens. Let me explain, and you can decide if it would be worth it for your family.

The ticket prices range from $150 to $260 and require reservations. All admission provides access to all waterways, beaches, and the aviary as well as usage of towels, snorkel gear and watersuits. Plus, if you use Ebates, reserve your tickets online via their website for 3.5% back.

Food and Drinks Included

Discovery Cove is an allinclusive attraction, meaning food and drinks are included. Breakfast is served at Laguna Grill from opening to 10:30 a.m., followed by lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Also, throughout the day snacks like soft pretzels, yogurt, smoothies, crackers and chips are available at marketplaces throughout the park. Beverages, including bottled water, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages are also included. 6 - June 2018

Attractions and Animal Encounters

This truly is a tropical oasis in Central Florida. The lazy river flows past sandy beaches, through a rainforest, beneath cascading waterfalls, and through an underwater cave. You can walk through a beautiful land of birds and have them land on you for feedings. My favorite part was the Grand Reef where I swam and snorkeled with thousands of tropical fish through this stunning coral reef habitat for hours.

Bonus Theme Park Admission

A ticket purchase to Discovery Cove also gets you free admission and free parking at SeaWorld, Aquatica and Busch Gardens Tampa Bay for 14 consecutive days around the date of your reservation - that’s like getting all your money back plus more. If you are planning a trip to Sea World or Aquatica, then consider first making a reservation at Discovery Cove. You can build a great family vacation with animals, rides and water fun at these three parks in Orlando. For more information, visit online at www.discoverycove.com/orlando

Safe fun under the summer sun

Courtesy of Lee Health Summer in Southwest Florida means plenty of outdoor activities for children. More importantly, it means making sure your child is taking the correct health and safety precautions when riding a bike or playing in water

Swimming Most drowning incidents nationwide occur between Memorial Day and Labor Day, according to Jamie Hoover, child advocacy coordinator with Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. “Last year, Florida again led the nation in lives lost to drowning,” Ms. Hoover says. “Nationally, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for children from 1 to 4 years of age. These deaths are 100 percent preventable.”

Water Safety Tips

• Never leave a child unattended in a pool or spa and always watch children around any body of water. Designate a water watcher to supervise children in the pool or spa. • Learn how to swim and teach your child how to swim. • Learn how to perform CPR on children and adults. • Keep children away from pool drains, pipes, and other openings to avoid entrapments. 48 - June 2018

• Ensure any pool and spa you use has drain covers that meet federal safety standards.

Bike Properly fitted helmets can reduce the risk of head injuries by at least 45 percent—yet less than

half of children 14 and under usually wear a bike helmet. “When shopping for a child’s helmet, include your child in the process,” says Sally Kreuscher, Safe Kids coordinator with Golisano Children’s Hospital. “Children who pick out their helmet are more likely to wear it.”

Bike Safety Tips

• Always wear a safety-approved helmet and stop at all stop signs and stoplights. • Ride on the right side of the road, with the flow of traffic. • Use appropriate hand signals and make eye contact with drivers.

Sun As temperatures begin reaching well into the 90s, remember to apply sunscreen, limit your exposure to the sun, and protect your eyes with sunglasses.

Sun Protection Tips

• Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher • Wear clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to protect as much skin as possible • Seek shade when possible, and remember that the sun’s ultraviolet rays are strongest between 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Family News

SalusCare expands center for children’s behavorial services

SalusCare’s Center for Growth, a dedicated and comprehensive practice for the behavioral healthcare needs of children and families, will hold a grand opening event on May 31 at 2789 Ortiz Ave. in Fort Myers. The all-inclusive center will include two full-time child psychiatrists, outpatient therapy for children and families, children’s case management, the Community Action Team (CAT), and Therapeutic Behavioral OnSite Services (TBOS). A sliding-fee scale is offered, and most insurance plans are accepted. “SalusCare heard from our Southwest Florida community that children’s behavioral healthcare services needed to be expanded and consolidated into one family-friendly, supportive and comfortable environment,” said Stacey Cook-Hawk, president & CEO of SalusCare.

“Parents bringing children to SalusCare for services asked for a dedicated building housing all children’s behavioral healthcare services. SalusCare not only heard the community, but we have listened and acted upon their request by opening the Center for Growth.” Located in Building G on the Ortiz Campus, the new Center for Growth is in a re-purposed former adult residential facility. “SalusCare was fortunate to possess some restricted funding available for children’s services, so this became the seed money we needed to initiate this project,” said Todd Cordisco, vice president of public relations & development. “There are still items on our wish list and opportunities for donors to support this new comprehensive center for children and families.” For more information, visit www.saluscareflorida.org

Autism screening for young children in Fort Myers Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age.
