Summer days at Lakes Park By Mandy Carter My kids love the train playground and splash pads at Lakes Park. After a recent evening of exploring the Children’s Garden, they have decided that this is our summer reading and picnic spot that must follow our weekly morning park playtime. Most locals have been to Lakes Park a number of times, but has your family taken the time to spend an entire day at this 300-acre piece of nature in south Fort Myers? With so many things to do at Lakes Park, here is how you can easily spend a full day enjoying the outdoors with the kids.

First, run off energy on the playgrounds

There are two playgrounds to enjoy; the train themed one being a favorite. However my son loves the climbing wall structure at the smaller playground. Kids are certain run out energy

Look for wildlife on the board walkway

Next, go cool off at the splash pad

Make sure to bring you swimsuits and towels, because the little ones will enjoy splashing around in the water. Make sure to

Grab some ice cream for dessert at the snack stand on you way to take a scenic walk through wildlife along the boardwalk. Everyone will have fun looking for turtles, birds and other wildlife- you may get lucky and see an alligator!

Explore the Children’s Garden

Take a bike ride

The archway at the entrance to the Children’s Garden is colorful and welcoming. A fence keeps the kids away from the parking lot traffic, so parents can feel safe to allow them to roam a little ahead on their own. Be sure to read the Storywalk along the pathway to get the kids engaged with interesting facts.. Before picking out one of the nice shady picnic tables, grab a book from the cute book bend.

There are a number of bike paths throughout the park, making it a perfect spot for a family ride. If you don’t feel like packing up everyone’s bike, no worries you can rent them at the park!

End the day with a train ride

Lakes Park is located at 7330 Gladiolus Drive in Fort Myers. For more info, call 239-533-7575 or visit www.leegov.com/parks

It’s fun to take a ride on a train, even more fun on a miniature train. You will create a memorable summer just by spending a few full days at the beautiful Lakes Park. I guarantee that you will see something different each time you go.

KID-APPROVED COOKIES

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cookies Ingredients: 1 large egg 1 cup light brown sugar 3/4 cup peanut butter creamy 1/2 cup butter unsalted 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1 3/4 cups flour all-purpose 3/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 cup Reese's Pieces 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions: Using a mixer, cream together the first 5 ingredients (through vanilla) on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Add the flour, baking soda, salt, and mix on low speed about 1 minute; do not over mix. Using a spatula or wooden spoon, add the Reese's Pieces, chocolate chips and blend. Using a cookie scoop, scoop dough and place on a large plate. Flatten mounds slightly with your palm, cover with plasticwrap, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before baking. Do not bake with warm dough because cookies will spread and bake thinner and flatter. Once the dough is chilled, preheat oven to 350 degrees. Note: if you chilled your dough overnight or longer, you will need to remove the dough from the fridge while the oven preheats. Place dough on cookie sheets lined with parchment paper, about 2 inches apart from one another. Bake for 8 to 9 minutes, rotating cookies halfway through. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing and transferring to a rack to finish cooling. www.certififieedpastryafificcionado.com

Virtual reality gives children a gateway to better healing Strap on that headset and grab a controller: The new virtual reality (VR) program at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida helps young patients find relief from pain and stress. Virtual reality can take users to worlds beyond their own, which is ideal for patients who have stayed awhile at the children’s hospital, says Shane Swartz, a patient technology specialist who spearheaded the development of the virtual reality program. Virtual reality typically uses headsets, motion controllers, and goggles to simulate new and exciting environments. Users can enjoy exploring lifelike objects and playing games that develop their focus and concentration. Shane, an avid gamer, built the mobile virtual reality cart from scratch using a PlayStation 4, PlayStation VR setup, and a medical grade mobile TV cart. “I built it to be mobile so I can visit patients who are unable to leave their hospital bed,” Shane says. “I can just wheel the setup right into their rooms.” Shane says the virtual reality program involves more than just patients playing games like Beat Saber and Fruit Ninja. “The technology also allows me to provide patients with experiences like flying through Paris or seeing the world through the eyes

of an eagle with a game called Eagle Flight,” he says. “If some patients are feeling more adventurous, I can place them underwater to swim with the dolphins or on the savannas of Africa to chase the gazelles. Usually, it’s only a matter of seconds before their faces light up and their hands reach out to touch the dolphins or pet the animals.” Shane specifically uses virtual reality games to make sure patients stay active at the request of their physical or occupational therapists. “If I can get them up and moving around while having fun, that’s a win/ win situation. Our goal within patient care is to incorporate therapeutic gaming and technology in to the hospital to help our patients.” Shane says patient technology experts like him communicate with clinical staff to generate success plans for patients. He works with the Child Life specialists at the hospital to identify patients who may benefit from the virtual reality program. He typically sees four to five patients each day, spending from a half hour to an hour with each. “I’m very blessed to be in this position I’m in, and also to be one of the early pioneers of a position that is destined to succeed by providing exceptional patient care, all just by having fun via technology,” Shane says. Keep it safe at the beach and around the water

In 2018, Florida set a tourism record for the eighth consecutive year drawing 126 million out-of-state visitors, and this year AAA ranks Orlando as the number one summer destination in the world! With Florida poised to break another tourism record and many residents looking forward to holiday weekends and vacations, the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) encourages everyone to maximize the health benefits and fun of days spent in and around Florida’s waters: play it safe and keep it healthy. Beach swimming, lake swimming and everywhere in-between

It’s obvious that swimming in open water is different than swimming in a pool but most people are not aware how vastly different swimming in open water is. Even the strongest swimmer can get in trouble swimming in open water. That’s why everyone— children, teens and adults—should never swim alone and always use the buddy system when swimming. Parents know to supervise their small children, but older children—this includes teens—need to be watched, too. Children ages 1–4 are more likely to drown in home 46 - June 2019

swimming pools and children ages 5–19 are more likely to drown in natural bodies of water. Someone watching from the shore who is aware of where swimmers are at all times is an important layer of protection. Other measures can add layers of protection: • Attention to safety signs and flags can help swimmers avoid dangerous conditions and currents like rip tide—weather.gov/forecast delivers beach forecasts and current statements by zip code. • Open cuts or wounds should not be immersed in water; if there’s bacteria in the water, they can enter the body through a cut or wound. Water should not be swallowed as well. • A cut or wound that happens when swimming, wading or boating should be washed with clean, running water and soap, and covered with a clean, dry waterproof bandage. Keep immunizations up to date

The Florida Department of Health in Lee County is reminding parents to make sure their children’s immunizations are up to date. All students are required to receive the Tdap booster before entering 7th grade. Children may receive the Tdap booster as early as age 11. Avoid the back to school rush and contact your healthcare provider today to

schedule an appointment before the next school year starts. The department, nationally accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board, works to protect, promote and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county and community efforts. Autism screening for young children scheduled for June 14

Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will be held on Friday, June 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Family Health Center, 2256 Heitman St., Fort Myers. It is estimated that one in every 68 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making

Family News

it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. A physician referral is not required. Appointments are not necessary, but parents are encouraged to call 239-343-6838 to schedule or obtain more information.

Cirque du Soleil’s Corteo coming July 17 - 21 Corteo, the latest and most enchanting Cirque du Soleil’s arena production is now touring in North America. The show will visit Estero at the Hertz Arena from July 17 to 21 for a limited run of seven performances. This unique production, directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca, first premiered in Montreal under the Big Top in April 2005. Since then, the show has been a great success and has amazed 8 million people in 19 countries on four continents. Corteo, which means cortege in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth. The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly

caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music turns lyrical and playful carrying Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality. The concept and disposition of the stage bring the audience in a theatrical atmosphere like never seen before in Cirque du Soleil arena shows. The set curtains, inspired by the Eiffel Tower, and the central curtains, which were hand painted, give a grandiose feel to the stage. This sets the tone for the poetry of Corteo. The cast of Corteo includes 52 acrobats, musicians, singers and actors from all around the world. Tickets for Corteo are available now online. For more info, visit www.cirquedusoleil.com/corteo.
